PC-Gaming TimeTravel (1989-2000) with Original Hardware: Problems & Fixes: 3dfx Voodoo 3 & CPU Clock
A Journey trough the 90s checking out over 20 PC Games with the PC we put together in the previous video. These games from 1989 to 2000 come with various problems and in this Videos I will talk about how to solve them if that is actually possible. From CPU Clockspeed issues in Wing Commander 1 to Cut-Off combat sounds in Might and Magic 3 Isles of Terra and issues with compatibility issues of the Voodoo 3: Issues with 640x400 Resolution in games like Toonstruck and Lands of Lore 2; Games with 15 Bit or other "High Color"-Modes (UniVBE) and early 3dfx accelerated games without support for the Voodoo 3.

    Thank you fof the video. I made a character with 30 leadership and wisdom and notice his morale has made 1 less action point happen often. I was supspecting it was because health was low. I have been using the perk that does more damage when you have wounds which gives huge damage boost. It is a solo character. How much leadership do i need to get positive ap buffs often in battle? I also need mechanics a certain level for repairs and weapon modding. I buy scrap from shop so its okay to fail weapon mods sometimes. And what is minimum explosives requirement for advanced ammo crafting hollowpoints and armor peircing? I am going to reroll my guy so he can be much stronger.

      You do get some XP from combat though it's not substantial. But I guess that's the case with most cases which aren't about grind. I don't remember exactly how it was in the first game, like if you got totally 0 zero. Definitely not the case in QW2. Just tested again and gor some XP from the first kill in combat. You can also check at 8:36 in the video where you see that the Party got some XP by killing a rat. But it also depends on your level vs the enemy level.

      @@carpii Yeah, I think Avernum Escape from the Pit is still unreached by his newer titles. But I'd recommend most of them. I noticed that when using the modbin program for Award Bios with a couple of Socket 7 boards that you could re activate the Turbo functionality, becase it was set to off. I have not tried this yet but i will in the near future. Thought i would share my findings :)

    128mb of ram is quite a large amount for back in the 1997/98 days. Most high end PC shipped with 32MB in 1997 and 64MB in 1998.

      @KordanorsGamingLair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, exactly. I tried to make that point at 8:05 showing all the games of 2000 which still don't use more than 128MB. But going below 128MB also doesn't make much sense. Ofc you don't lose much when playing a game from 1997. But you also don't gain anything.

    I wish I could create a remote control instead of accessing directly motherboard dip switch that allows me to change CPU multiplier and FSB at the same time. My socket 7 motherboard is SOYO-5ED5 and CPU is Pentium 200 non MMX. CPU is able to run on that motherboard from 75MHz(50*1.5) to 200 (66*3). The purpose is the same - create early dos/windows 9x compatible platform. Sadly nobody tried to do the same with dip switches. Perhaps I need to check what contacts are shortened at specific dip positions(75Mhz-200 only), unsolder dip switch and create a toggle with just 2 positions like you did. Alternative option could be just to rely just on CPUSPEED dos utility and its flexibility to change multiplier/cpu parameters, but then I will have only 2 options - 133 and 200Mhz, since FSB will be 66MHz only. But such difference is nothing compare to yours 120-550Mhz. Third option could be use another platform on ASUS P3B-F having BIOS soft menu and CPU with unlocked multiplier, like SL2S7 Pentium 2 Deshutes 400Mhz (15USD on ebay), then it would result 133-400Mhz system.

    • @KordanorsGamingLair
      @KordanorsGamingLair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't know how this would be possible with dip switches. And removing them could potentially be a pain. Once you use the method I use with bistable relais however, nothing would stop you from making it being remotely activated. I am not sure what the easiest way would be, but in theory you could use the same option with the bistable relays and then combine that with a arduino for example. That way you could even remote comtrol every jumper individually if you wanted.

    The industry should have never called it a turbo button. It should have been called a decelerate button if it was meant to slow it down. Even Intel themselves stated that the term turbo means running the CPU at full speed. The term turbo means faster. The full term is turbocharger. In the Fast and Furious movies when they would hit their turbo buttons to enable the nitrix oxide that they had modified for their cars in the movies you can see the cars didn't slow down. They did the opposite when they hit the turbo. The car went faster.

    • @KordanorsGamingLair
      @KordanorsGamingLair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, though there are cases, even at the very beginning, when it acted differently. Really depends on machine to machine. But I think in the last ages of it's existence it was mostly to slow down the PC rather than to accenerate it. There is a nice video about it by VWestlife, where he is talking 18 Minutes about the history and uses of turbo buttons :D

      Cool, yeah. I mean in the end these types of "Time Machines" are all about flexibility, so every bit helps. I checked the mainboard but all pics I saw had dip switches. You plan to work around and replace these? That's certainly possible ofc also requires quite a bit more tinkering.

    • @achaycock
      @achaycock 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This has been interesting - there are a number of useful tools that you have brought up. I am curious to know if you have tested the difference between external cache enabled and external cache disabled in conjunction with the CPU? I found that it did make a difference, although I have not modified my bus speed down to 60MHz and as such, I cannot directly compare (yet).

    • @KordanorsGamingLair
      @KordanorsGamingLair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Heyho! Yeah, you can see a list at 33:20 where I did list a couple of settings where just the external cache is different. You basically need to keep in Mind that the K6 2+ CPU has it's own L2 Cache. That means that the external Cache becomes L3 basically. But as soon as you disable one cache of the CPU it moves "up" and as it's slower as the integreated L1/L2 cache, the CPU also becomes slower if it needs to use the External Cache as L1/L2. So disabling "just" the external cache does almost nothing. But Disabling L1, L2 and then also disabling the external cache halves the effective speed and makes a massive difference.

      Oh, that's because I am using 2 SD Cards. One card for DOS: 16GB capacity, but as DOS only handles 8GB drive and 2GB partitions, that's how its set up. The Second SD ist for Windows. That one is 128gb, with full 128gb used as a single partition.

      Hah, I actually already exchanged my ESS for the Orpheus 2 LT now. But in terms of the setup not much changed. 25:06 - another hint that a lot of people don't realize, these later PCI cards were mostly released later than normal AGP version, that means that you can't use older drivers, which means that it is mostly not wortht o buy for retro gaming, I think that FX series should be still fine, but I have one 6200 for PCI and it was released in 2008!! Drivers I need are too old for this GPU, so 6600GT has much better compatibility because it was released in 2004 and you can use older drivers. So I really don't recommend buying GeForce 6000 series for PCI, it's not what you think it is, there is no 6000 series compatibility. But my 6200 PCI was completely new when I bought it few years ago, so I am still glad that I have one even when it's piece of nonsense hardware. 🙂

      Yeah, it's also what I show on that "Diagram" around that timestamp (can also be downloaded separately, link in descripton). There you can nicely see how PCI is vanishing, then AGP is taking over, and then PCI is reappearing. And that "new" PCI should only be bought for PCs of that time, unless you are absolutely sure that it will work on your older system (like if you have someone who already tested that specific model), but assume it wont work.

    There is no correct answer, some games just need specific GPU with specific drivers to run correctly, you can just find the most universal combination, but it's not gonna be 100% compatible with all games. 🙂

      @KordanorsGamingLair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, pretty much. Next Sunday I also plan to release a video which will also somewhat "disenchant" the Voodoo 3. While it is a great card, it's also definitely not one which let's you live carefree, and without compatibility issues.

      @@KordanorsGamingLair I am using AvP 1999 and NFS5 as a test, if these 2 games work fine, then everything will probably run fine. For some reason, DX6 and DX7 games have the worst compatibility problems and when you use even older hardware, you will realize that HW from that time of the game doesn't have performance to actually run it properly, everything was developed for future HW, but back in the day, nobody cared about some 60+ FPS, it was just does it run? If yes, then it was everything fine. 😀 Just a little tip for people who are trying to build computer with the best possible performance and still good compatibility with DX7 and DX6 games - it works pretty fine on Radeons x1000 series under Win 2000 with alternative omega drivers. One would expect that Win 2000 and XP are pretty much the same because of similar core, but there is a pretty huge difference when it comes to problematical 90s games. Ofcourse you can run them fine in Win 98, but you can't use later HW because of non existing drivers. Many years ago, we were throwing GPUs like MX440 out of Windows, these common and cheap GPUs are also pretty good for 90s gaming in these days, but ofcourse it's not for people who want time precise machine with actual 90s HW. I was always nvidia boy back in the day, but now I realize that ATI card were mostly better for compatibility and performance, GPUs like Radeon 9600 can be easily found now, it's nothing rare, but it has good value for me becuase it has exactly that mix of compatibility, performance and support for old operating systems I need. 3dfx is like completely new undiscovered galaxy for me, I hope one day I will get there. 😀 The worst thing about all those compatibility problems is that you will finally solve it, then you forgot about retro HW for some time and then you can start again because you don't remember what exact drivers you used before.....I hate it. 😀

    This was great and nice to see your build. I've wanted to build a DOS pc for a long time, but it's difficult to decide what era to go with! I think I'll work on a windows 98 PC first before getting into the can of worms that is DOS!

    • @KordanorsGamingLair
      @KordanorsGamingLair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Yeah, that's reasonable. Also consider using a Mister FPGA for DOS, which you could then maybe also use to solve the C64 problem :D I think a PC with high performance components fom around the years 2002-2004 should yield pretty much the best results for most games, except of DOS and ofc the early 3dfx stuff. Also instead of swapping between DOS and WIN98 as I did, you could swap between WIN98 and XP if that should ever be necessary. Though I am not sure if a SD-Card would still offer optimal speed for that era, but ofc there are also alternatives. :)

    Are you familiar with 86box? Gives far more options for tinkering than DOSBox does and emulates more accurately in my experience. I use 86box to have 486 and early Pentium machines with several DOS and Windows 3.11,95 and 98 configurations, even with a 3D Voodoo card.

    • @KordanorsGamingLair
      @KordanorsGamingLair 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, interesting. But no, not familiar with it. I only tried around with different DosBox releases. PCem might already yield better results than DosBox, but I didnt tinker around with that either. In fact I didnt even know of it until I was already deep into getting all parts together (a bit later there was also a Linus Tech Tips video on PCem). Seems like 86 is based on PCem, so I don't doubt it will give better results. But personally, I rather stick to the original now.

      86Box is great! It is based on PCem, but this fork focus on emulation accuracy instead of speed.

    Mad respect for this lots-of-PCs-in-one-approach. Personally I am going in completely the opposite direction with dozens of separate machines, so it's nice and relaxing to watch all the hoops I won't have to jump through and the nifty solutions for them. :P

    • @KordanorsGamingLair
      @KordanorsGamingLair 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha, yeah I have heard of people basically having a PC for every 2 years of games, so that everything is time accurate, and surely, in lots of cases you do avoid issues. Especially the Voodoo 3 was actually a total pain to work with. Most stuff can be made so that it works, but it's lots of work and troubleshooding and "modern knowledge" and options you wouldn't have had back then. More on that in the next video :D

    • @KordanorsGamingLair
      @KordanorsGamingLair 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, by the time the PCs were that powerful, "Desktop PCs" were already rather unpopular. I think their time was mostly in the late 90s, popularized by the original IBM PCs for example. It's kinda funny though that this specific case, which was made in the early 90s, and which I bought on ebay, was used in a company which back in the day, already put a AMD K6 into it.
