SK Standard Plus 22LR Temperature Sensitivity
This video documents my experiment to determine the temperature sensitivity of SK Standard Plus 22LR ammunition. I've read opinions where this ammo loses accuracy below 40F so I decided to see for myself.
In case you are wondering about my math skills; I chronographed 50 consecutive rounds per test but I also shot a couple extra 5-round groups for the accuracy tests.

      @dauntlessendeavors1000 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Possibly, but I doubt I could ever accumulate enough data to demonstrate that the modifications you suggest make a statistically significant improvement in this rifle design.

      @@dauntlessendeavors1000 Okay cool. I'd found information elsewhere on the M77/17/22 rifle where shimming was used in the bolt to tighten up the headspacing on cartridges, which significantly improved accuracy. A few thousandths here, a few thousandths there. Sometimes its just a game of incremental changes adding up to accuracy. That's all the expensive stuff factories often avoid, to bring customers reduced cost.

  • @exothermal.sprocket
    @exothermal.sprocket หลายเดือนก่อน

    The friction inherent in the trigger pivot which is from the roughness of the castings that aren't polished, honed, or shimmed, is what's preventing the sear engagement. I agree, having a trigger that light is not advisable IN THIS CRUDE TRIGGER ASSEMBLY. It's totally fine in a Timney or some other system that's got forged and polished and precise parts in it. This Ruger system can be improved significantly with some file/sanding/cleaning/shimming but that's more in depth than swapping a spring.

    • @dauntlessendeavors1000
      @dauntlessendeavors1000 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree. If one must have a trigger pull that measures in ounces, I always recommend purchasing a trigger that was DESIGNED to be operated in that weight range. I also don't recommend that the average person disassemble and stone or polish their trigger parts. 8 times out of 10, they will screw it up.

    I know it probably wouldn’t matter for a 22 but when you dial indicate the OD of the barrel on your lathe is there a way to use something like an extra long pin gauge that’s actually stuck in the chamber and sticking out a bit, then indicate off that pin instead of the outside of the barrel. Is that a thing when chambering on a centerfire rifle? Thanks.

    • @dauntlessendeavors1000
      @dauntlessendeavors1000 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Shane, Good question and I do think it matters. On the RAR barrel, there is very little straight section ahead of the chamber before the taper begins. I didn’t want to have to chuck on the taper so I went with the absolute minimum setback required to clean up the old chamber with the Bentz reamer. This decision left some of the factory barrel shank so I dialed in the OD to match the shank. After finishing the OD, I dialed in off the remnants of the original chamber before reaming the new chamber. Of course, the reamer is going to follow the old bore, even if it is a little bit off. If I had a fresh barrel blank, I would have dialed it in off the bore and done everything off that chucking.

    These rifles don't shoot well as they come from the factory. I've seen that in person. It's a shame too, because they are such a nice looking rifle. I was at the LGS a few weeks ago, and saw one of these rifles. I was there to pick up a new CZ 457 American, and compared the 2 rifles side by side. I may have even liked the looks of the Springfield 20/20 even better than the CZ. I wished Springfield would re-think the manufacturing processes of this rifle, and focus more on accuracy. This would be a damn beautiful rifle if it shot well. I don't keep rifles that don't shoot well. Also, you should shoot some 10 shot groups. That shows much more about the rifles potential than 5 shots do. All of my 22lr's will shoot 1/2" 5 shots on command, with just about any ammo. Even with cheap Federal Automatch, American Eagle, and Auguila, to name a few. As an example: My CZ American wasn't shooting extremely well when I first got it, but a tiny bit of bedding work, and removing a little wood, where the barrel was riding on the stock, brought the groups down substantially. No messing with action screw torque bs, just simple mechanics and proper foundation. But, if a guy has to remove a barrel, set the chamber back, and then rechamber to tighter specs, that is far outside the capabilities of most guys here. It should also not have to be done to a new rifle off the shelf. Springfield needs to get their act together.

    Hi from South Africa. I aquired a Ex Rhodesian/Zimbabwe FN FAL and it had the same issue. I guessed that it was the hinge pin that was worn, however my local Gunsmith took a look at it to check everything, headspace, bore etc and came to the conclusion that most of the movement was at the hinge pin. He manufactured a shim to fit horizontally that the the hinge pin closed down on and that solve the problem. The hook on the hinge pin had the most wear. I would be very interested in those magnet sims of yours. Regards.

    • @dauntlessendeavors1000
      @dauntlessendeavors1000 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your note. I agree that the hinge pin often needs tightening. Unfortunately, I believe they tend to wear "out of round" which is difficult to repair. Aside from oval holes, I think each rifle would require a custom diameter and length, which is why I decided not to attempt making oversized replacement pins.

    After watching your other video about the base of the bullet not fully making contact with the rifling on the sporter chambered Ruger, I wonder if this and other sporter chambered rifles would shoot better using a higher velocity/higher pressure .22, (like SK High Velocity, not Stinger) that might expand that bullet base better possibly improving the expansion, thus improving the rifling contact that may improve accuracy.

Cci mini mag was not in the top of the list. Both my rifles shot cci standard velocity and Norma tac 22 very well. In most cases neither rifle liked the expensive stuff. Try shooting a few 5 round groups of each.

      Thanks for your comment. When I made this video series, ammo was in very short supply, so I used what I had. I stand by my assertion that an accurate rifle will shoot well with many kinds of ammo and accurate ammo will shoot well in many rifles. I would never take CCI Mini Mags to a bench rest match but I do consider it to be good quality, very reliable, general-purpose 22LR ammo. I think it is much more likely to be used in a rifle like the RAR than say Lapua Center-X and I believe it is good enough to indicate trends of improved accuracy if any of my experiments should actually improve the accuracy of the rifle. Thanks again for watching.
