@ElainaxStrongerSpEd I'd also recommend bring a written out list of meds you take and any allergies as well as your preferred pharmacy. We have to check all those things with patients and we hate bugging mommies in labor for it. For any meds, we need the name, strength, and how often you take it. If you have it all written out, you can just give it to your nurse and have them get it to pharmacy.

@@ElainaxStrongerSpEd I had many years where I enjoyed self contained. 😊 However, where I live they tend to put everyone in the same class despite needs and diagnosis and provide minimal help . It took a toll on me and I decide to do resource . Working with gen ed teachers can be difficult and I despise teaching to a test . I don’t love resource but I can focus on teaching more . However, recently it seems the push is to put students who are significantly impacted in gen ed and send the students to resource with minimal assistance 😕 This year I have 12 5th graders in a tiny room with varying abilities in resource at this time no para support . I am seriously considering doing something independent or working in another area outside of public education because it’s not a system set up for success at least where I live .

@@nicoleholmes9743 That is so frustrating! I am so sorry to hear that! I can see why you are so burnt out with that situation. I would be struggling with that too.

@@swinapatel9310 Our goal is always to reach independence with each student- so no, we don’t automatically hold their hand in the hallways. I do have some students where elopement is a concern, so we might have to hold their hands at different points. However, we try to move to linking arms or walking right next to the student until we can trust them to give them a little more space without being concerned about elopement. Hope that answers your question!

@@swinapatel9310 Elopement means a student leaves their assigned area. In the hallway that might mean they run out the door or into a different classroom. Running out the door is obviously a safety concern so we might hold the hand of a student who is at risk for running out the door to prevent that and keep them safe.

Awww thank you! I try but being in someone else’s classroom for the summer has made that more challenging for me. ESY planning is taking me longer…probably 30-45 minutes daily for a 4 hour work day with students. I’m just not as familiar with these students yet and their needs so I’m taking a bit longer to plan what they’re doing. During the school year I probably still do 30-45 minutes daily but that’s obviously for a full school day.

Space and layout can have such an effect on behavior! Do you have access to any dividers at all?

@@ElainaxStrongerSpEd Only 1 that divides the room in half with no room to add any even if I did have them. I have a few students that are 1 to 1 with staff (not their own assigned aid) that are either dangerous with others or so much of a distraction that we can't but them together. I have tried for years to get a bigger room.

I’ll have an infant next summer so I probably won’t teach ESY next summer either but I’m learning a lot right now! I teach BD during the school year so some of the students with different needs I’m working with for ESY are definitely helping me to learn more.

​@@ElainaxStrongerSpEd Yes, we have all the kids the whole 4 hours and 30 mins. However, we serve free breakfast and lunch so that helps to break up the time. I agree with you about learning from the different students.

I was able to do that for the progress monitoring procedures thankfully! This is my first year doing ESY though so I just assumed teacher would send the needed materials…I was wrong! Lol
