NoNameNationals 2024! - My Journey Racing a VW Buggy On Asphalt For The First Time!
Third times the charm, right? Finally made it as a participant to #NoNameNationals 2024 in its third year, where we decided to take on building a 1904cc 74 stroke VW aircooled engine prior to going to the event. We succeeded and made it! Overall I was very pleased with how it ran.... low 9s (and once an 8.9 at 74 mph in the 1/8th, ain't to bad for a mild VW sandrail - especially when you consider that we were spinning the tires a bit off the line. Only got views from the cockpit of the buggy, as on Saturday we had a little break on passenger side output shaft :( That's VWs for you, though. Had a great time regardless!!

Today, I'm Figuring VW Deck Height for a 74mm stroke with "A" pistons and stock rods for our 1904cc build. It's an important part of the build so as to get the correct compression for the application. We ended up with a deck height of .045" inches... translating to a 9.2 : 1 compression ratio.

VW Crank Gear Removal - An Alternative Method
มุมมอง 1043 หลายเดือนก่อน
Removing VW Crank Gear to be used on my 74mm stroker crank. I don't exactly have the "correct" tool to do so (which would be a good choice to use), so I had to come up with an alternate method. In the end I used a generic bearing separator from Harbor Freight to do the job alongside my hydraulic press, but had to flip it over to do so.

    You ever think of running E85, it runs cooler, 105 octane, good for track cars, cheaper. There's a turbo bug on yt running it. Had a 2012 Chrysler I ran it in. Hate cars overheating. I'm gonna run it in my next Baja I get, which will be next week.

      @@johngillespie3409 I’ve also have a little turbo dragster project that I piddle with from time to time that I absolutely plan on running E85 on. This buggy actually wasn’t running too awfully hot….later found out that my throttle linkage came loose giving it the appearance of running hot. That said, I’m open minded about a slightly higher octane for cooling help - this engine is at 9.2:1 compression so I can’t go too high with octane. I ran 110 octane on my other motor and at high rpm it would miss….just not enough compression to efficiently burn it at that rpm.

    This is very helpful information! I completed an engine swap and it came with newer pressure plate (no middle ring). Target car has throw out bearing for the older swing axle so did not provide the distance required to properly engage. Watched your video, dropped motor again, swapped pressure plates so once again compatible - Viola ! Thanks

    I'm sure it was still all vacuum-tube, the best sounding equipment that ever was. I believe this was the turntable with the built-in 45 RPM Adaptor that lifted up in halves from the turntable platter itself. Ingenious! Enjoy the fruits of your labor! Thanks for putting this video together!

      Yep, all vacuum tubes and you are correct, it has the built-in 45 adapter. My 2007cc Beetle was running 14.3 quarters and even though it had a power pulley, I took the fanbelt off and that dropped it down to 13.7's, so if you do the same you'll be well into the 8's. The cooling fan/alternator saps so much horsepower. Just remember to pop the belt back on straight after the race before driving it back to the pits

    • @culturedredneckgarage3784
      @culturedredneckgarage3784 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Dang, that's a good drop in time! I knew that the fan was a power robber, but that just proves it. If I ever do an all-out race motor, it will be a fanless one for sure.

      @@culturedredneckgarage3784 One of the engine builders here in the UK ran some dyno tests on a 2110cc motor to see how much power is lost with the fan: 4hp@3000rpm 13hp@5700rpm 18hp@6000rpm 75amp alternator used 1.5hp (55amp would use less) Basically if you're doing 60mph on the freeway with your 40 horse, 10 of those horses are being used to cool it!

    Nothing wrong with enlarging the exhaust port. Your scavenging efforts can be accomplished by a combination of downstream exhaust piping diameters. A step-down in exhaust piping diameters will help create that scavenging effect quite well and restore and quite possibly improve low end torque. A lightened flywheel can also contribute to this as well.
