That'd me
Thank you for sharing. I wish we have a specialist like you here in Los Angeles California.
We are working on SoCal
🤦🏻♂️ Jeeeeeeeez
"Flexing like an F1 wing would do". I see what you did there... I fully agree that shims are a problem in this application if they're simply flat and only used at one location. In theory, a series of shims in all the holes that are graded to mimic a flat plane after fitment would be fine, but tedious to place.
Yea most people who watch TH-cam will be buying a McLaren at some point. 😂
Also, the fact that the attachment bolts milled recess' are left with effectively sharp edges where the bolt head lands so always a potential stress area. They seem to crack there even when fitted with no shims fitted. Basic engineering error.
Would a shim with a larger surface area be an acceptable compromise? It would support the casting over a larger area, which could move the fulcrum so there is less leverage effect, and it would keep the fix down in terms of time.
@@TheLDunn1 potentially yes
Just watched Harry’s Garage and was struck by the fact his 40 year old Countach hasn’t had an issue with its door hinges once 🧐….
Does it affect soft close doors?
I’ve now had three…allegedly 🤔. Had passenger door replaced 18 months ago, along with some “rust” paintwork. I noticed this April I had ‘rust” again on same panels and took it back to dealer. It’s an MY2018 570 Spyder and just past 14,000 miles. They fixed the paint and also said I needed both hinges. I was very annoyed as the passenger door is probably used 1 in 50 times I drive the car; so very infrequently. I am a Nazi when it comes to ensuring the doors aren’t slammed down too. I literally threw my toys out the pram and McLaren paid 75% of cost… which to me is still taking the piss as this is clearly DESIGN FAULT. Note; I worked in a foundry as a student making boilers…. They operated at 100’c for 25 years technically submerged in water without failure 🤷🏻♂️
I had the hinges on my 600LT replaced last year with the GT hinges - is this the new design you are referencing, or this there a different part?
Thank god this channel saved me from buying one
shit metal
As useful as ever. McLaren warranty is turning into a lottery. Another thing to look out for when buying a pre-owned car.
Thanks for the update, I would not be happy if they are double cost from McLaren and not resolving the issue. Are there any cases of replacements also failing or is it too early to say?
as always real gems of information .... so odd though you really wonder what they are thinking at woking
Hopefully putting up the price they are a stronger unit!
McLaren dealer replaced the hinges of my 600LT with GT parts
Hi are the hinges the same on the GT?
❤ brilliant well said ❤,
I want one but I've never driven anything like it , I'd want some expert tuition before I'd trust myself tbh
So a number of the cars that are presented to you are faulty - I think this is to be expected if you deal in McLarens!!
What would the price be on a good condition/properly serviced 650S Le Mans coupe? That's the particular model I'd really like. Great video btw.
@@IamtheLordofDoom Le Mans models are tough to value and there are not many out there, but the seem to attract a 20-25% premium to the base model
@@ThorneyMotorsport Thanks for the reply. Yeah, just 50 made and sold worldwide so probably not many RHD models in the first place =/ I really like that they were worked on by Peter Stevens. A 25% premium seems quite reasonable to me.
what i meant by RS1 and RS2 ? between the 12c and 650 the engine code ? im new to mclaren but fully intereted to learn everything about this cars
iam going out for a drive on my McLaren now to see if I have any of these problems , to be fair I love it , I find the costs are similar to my boat on those you spend 10% a year of the value , if its lest you had a good year
Mr. Thorne, it is a pleasure to see your videos. I recently decided on the decision to get a supercar. 720s is a consideration. From your videos it seems that the 720s is a relatively safe buy considering you get it fully inspected. Some items you mentioned were: door alignments, oil pump leaks, suspension leaks and electrical sensor issues. Once all of these are taken care of, do you feel this is a relatively safe buy?
@@BayAreaMan I get this question a lot, which is the best/safest model to buy and the answer is there is no model better or worse than the others, they all have their issues and they all need certain things checking before you buy. So to answer your question, look for the things that affect them and you'll be safe in buying any of the models.
@@ThorneyMotorsport Good advice. I will most definitely be inspecting the car 100%.
I am looking at purchasing a Mclaren soon and you are my first choice because of this exact video. If you care about a vehicle and more importantly safety, cost is a byproduct. These sorts of cars do have a higher maintenance cost than say a Ford Focus and you need to budget accordingly.
Very nice
720s seem great value now, if you’re got the 💰
These cars have stabilised for some time,PERHAPS it’s because the 750S is NOT MASS produced, only built to order, anyway worth every Penny…
Must be nice to have so much money that you can lose £100 per mile! Great news for the buyer.
Think BIG, guys!
Looks like some bubbling at 6:10 to 6:13

It’s quite errr Orange ! If your going to buy one definitely have Thorney warranty it, good folk
YOU HAVE A WEBSITE I CAN SEE WHICH CARS YOU HAVE FOR SALE ?
Hi, here: www.thorneymotorsport.co.uk/cars/
The steering wheel is on the wrong side
Its on the right side, both figuratively and literally.
Beautiful cars! I was in the market for a McLaren until I realised that I wouldn’t be able to open the doors in my garage. I will wait to move in the next couple of years before I buy one now. I did buy a Honda Civic Type-R yesterday though so that will tide me over.
Great video ... and as Holmes would say, "elementary my dear Watson". A special message I guess for especially (but not limited to) all the 600LT owners who during the hours of darkness get a crained neck looking in the rear view mirror whilst blip flooring the throttle to impress the girlfriend, whilst they "cook their cats" because they like to see the fireworks coming out of the tailpipes ... you couldn't make it up. :)
What does the GT score ?
Thats a good question and we've driven quite a few now so we will update it. Same as a 650s though.
Thank you for this great video! What do you consider over revving? Have McLaren set the rev limiter to high so it is worthwhile turning it back a couple of 100 revs? (When going sideways it is quite nice to have a revlimiter to lean on)
@@drivingnirvana5164 a lot of car owners get forced induction cars wrong, FI generates power and torque lower in the rev range than NA so the trick is to change gear at peak torque not peak rpm. To get the best out of any McLaren change gear between 5-6k rpm, there is little point any higher as torque is increa at a decreasing rate.
@@johnthorne2920 Thank you, well now that answer would take us into a long discussion on rpm/hp/torque/gearing but that we can save for when I bought a 650s spider that I am shooting for and come to UK to let you look over it. 😎 But top power of the stock 650s are made between 6000 and 8000, since gearing is set up for that it will accelerate the quickest in that range and with about 2k rpm down per gear you stock want all the revs you can have. But I can also see that power curves of mapped engines tend to provide power curves that are close to peak already at 5300rpm together with a boat load of torque so then it makes sense to rev less. But we are talking about vehicles with the only purpose to create emotions and fun and revs is a big part of it. When you buy an exciting engine you want to use the full engine.😎 So what do you consider to be the limit of revs that are safe and can you accommodate tune to lower the revlimiter together with adjusted power curve? I know how it is especially on faster auto cross events etc, you sometimes lean on the revlimiter for 10m instead of making the up shift and then go right back again…..
Great video. Were there 50 total of both coupe and spider or 50 of each? I've read 50 of each but that may not be accurate. I also have a 50th spider myself
@@wildbeargt 50 of each, sorry, I don't make that clear in the video do i
Hi John, I keep hovering over your website as I am seriously tempted by either a 570S or a 650S (ideally a spider so I can appreciate the amazing all year round UK weather 😂😂). There are obviously pros and cons to both, but would you say overall the 650s is the better buy? (I appreciate it is subjective).
I have a set of questions I usually ask those looking to buy and are unsure; are you more interested in technology or age of vehicle? The Super series cars (12c, 650s, 720) are of a higher technical nature and build with active aero and active suspension so are naturally the 'better' car in the regards of capability, but the sports series cars (570, 540) are newer so have improvements to things like software, some function and simple age. I own a 570s (albeit massively modified) but the 12c/650 is the 'better' road car due to its active suspension. They all handle the same but the ride is better in its softest mode compared to a sports series. There is no better or worse, simply what is more suited to your requirements.
@SilverstoneShootingCentre thank you very much for the reply. The car will be used for every day use and unlikely to be taken to a track. It won't necessarily be my daily driver (I have a Taycan Turbo S for that purpose), however I am not the type to leave it sitting in a garage gathering dust either. I do like tech in a car, however I would probably not be too fussed in either of these, as it is not great in either of them apparently. I am the type to like to listen to the sound of the engine and intake more than music anyway, so am I right in thinking the 650S probably has the better sound with or without the sports exhaust? I believe you probably can offer a better exhaust at point of sale anyway, which no doubt is better acoustically than McLarens. I am swaying in the direction of the 650s to be honest as I think it looks better and I like the active aero etc. Is the warranty still the same price for both the 650s and 570s with yourselves? Thanks 🙂.
@@kevinwhite8836 Sorry, was logged in via wrong account. Yes, same price for both. I'd try one of each, but dont discount the 12c either.
"Marginally less shit" 😂 - that is the sort of consumer advice we need and why you are respected Sir.
I'd love a 12c but after hearing there could be a £23k new gearbox needed puts me off 😮
Its really not the case, internet is full of BS like this. Gearboxes can be repaired for under £10k and their failure rate is now dramatically lower, we last did one last month, prior to that none for months.
how long (in time) should we expect the accumulator on a 12C to last? I had mine replaced about 6 years ago, and now the suspension feels "clunky" again.
@@Utahsaint yeah about 5-6 years is right
Thanks for being so candid
It’s a shame McLarens are such problematic and unserviceable money pits because they are awesome vehicles.
