Something a little different this week. We have had many of these laptops come back with broken hinge mechanism. I have been purchasing new back covers, but this involves cost and a lot of time waiting for the cover to arrive. I wanted to try a different method of repair. This is a creative way to repair the hinge issue. Ive done many of these when the LCD cover is not available or customer is on a budget. Only thing I would recommend is dont use the entire flat bar. You can just use a square cutout where the damaged hinge is. great content!
Hello! I have an e7440 that doesn't power on. it keeps the power light on for about 10 seconds, then the battery light flashes and goes off. I've tried new cmos batt, reflash bios chips, to no avail. Is there any known cause of this?
Sounds like you have done all the correct things.This laptop is not even getting the correct input voltage, so I am waiting on the new PD Controller before carrying out any further work.

(5:55 exactly) Winbond 25Q128BVSIG. If that motherboard uses a 10th or 11th generation Intel CPU, I would copy the BIOS files to a new (blank) SPIFlash memory and install it to check if the new copy works. I would apply this same procedure if you use an eeprom for the data that "communicates" with the Super I-O. Excellent repair without a diagram but with the data sheets and the experience acquired to date. I loved it. A sincere congratulations. All the best. PS: If you make a video (with your way of explaining things) when there is time or opportunity, many of us would watch it (it would be a reference to consult😊).
I am interested if the replacement chip will come with the correct firmware or you will have to use the Texas Instruments Application Customisation Tool to program the new chip via the SPI interface? Will there be a part 2 on the video
Hi JFIXX, if you run a youtube search for TPS65988, it will bring up the two videos that Electronic Repair School did with replacing this same PD Controller. I don't think that they had to program the new IC, but he does say that he did have some issues with the cheap ones that he bought from China. I was hoping that I had the same IC on another laptop here but unfortunately not, and I will have to purchase for about 30 euro.

@@JFIXX1 Just one further thing. I did inject 13.5V in to the VSYS rail to test and the laptop powered on but did not POST. Also injected 20V in before the battery management IC and laptop powered on but did not POST. So I am concerned that there is a is a secondary issue.
@@therepairshare673 I hope it's the only issue for you. Maybe that PD controller needs to release some power good signal as well in order for the laptop to post
@@JFIXX1 Yeah, I'm thinking the same. But at least I know the power button and the keyboard backlight work! Wonder if it would be possible to find the PG pin on the PD Controller and fool it. I think I'm just going to order a new PD Controller in any case, as I need to get better at working with them.
Great Video! Maybe it could have been a frozen EC chip? When you took out the board to photograph you disconnected the RTC and main battery so the BIOS got reset so it could have resolved the issue at this point and been nothing to do with the DIMM module? If the memory wasn't detected in the slot due to dust or bad seating I think a HP laptop would be able to detect this and give an error code in the form of a blinking sequence on the caps lock key. You could remove the module and try and power on without it and see if you get a light pattern to prove this point.
Maybe rust, carbon build up on the pins or the RAM or both. Changing the ram fixes it then maybe the previous ram was faulty or incompatible.
Incompatible SODIMM? Was it single or double density RAM?

Hi. Pretty good idea but looks like a lot of work... I haven't had to deal with this myself but would suggest trying screw rivets. They would just leave a nice blank screw head on the outside. Enjoy your channel. Paul from Canada
Hi Paul, from the feedback that I've got, it seems to be the tapping of the metal that is the part that most people find intimidating. I've always like tapping and fastening things with screws, as opposed to adhesives/glues/welding etc - I guess because you can take them apart again if you need to adapt. However........ I have just checked out screw rivets, which I somehow have never come across. I think they actually make the solution much better - 1. No need to tap, just need to drill the six holes 2. No need to trim off excess of the M3 bolts and sand (which was a pain) 3. Most of the actual thread is inside the back cover, so the flat steel can be thinner. (making the solution lighter and not protruding as much). Let me see if I can get my hands on some and we can see how version 2.0 looks.

All the measurements on the ceramic capacitors and even better aided by the thermal camera itself indicate that the TPS65988 IC is damaged (at least I am totally convinced of it myself). Another way to expose it, without needing to remove the IC yet, if I remove (desolder) the three ceramic capacitors one by one and measuring continuity between the pad removed from the pins 9, 25 and 46 with respect to chassis ground,; With only one of those pins (any of the three) indicating a short circuit, I would order replacing that IC with a functional one (new or used), without any discussion, clarifying to the technician that I do not want to find any solder bridge. between the attached (neighboring) pins when I personally examined it under the microscope. Excellent preliminary (initial) work, please replace that IC and let's see what happens (it's just the first battle in this fight)... if necessary we should continue the troubleshooting. All the best.

Hi, Please note that I tried the laptop initially with a universal charger (at the start of the video), and then borrowed a legitimate Dell charger from my friend which I used for the rest of the video. This is my first experience of the USB C and PD Controller power setup, so I will be hoping to build on this in the next few months. I find this very wrong cause it adds weight to the laptop.In my opinion the best way would be to put a a scew through the brass inserts and with a metal washer to tight the hinge inside the laptop.
Thanks for your contribution. I will weigh the additional screws and flat steel and put the weight in the video description. I tried many solutions to somehow keep the thread inside the back cover, as this is certainly preferable than having something external, but all such solutions require that the thread is fixed to the same plastic back cover - and I just dont trust it!
I checked that pin # 4 and only got 1.3 Vdc. Tried grounding, but nothing happened. Checked battery output, which read 8.03 Vdc so battery is okay. Am stuck now.

And there is also some information about how to check the different voltages.

Sometimes you have to do that kind of work. To do it quickly: a) Brushed Stainless Steel Sheet Metal Plate (Very Cheap) b) rotary tool (dremel) - the device is NOT cheap due to its high-speed motor - but the cutting discs and other pieces that make up the assembly ARE. c) Rectangular silicone rubber sealing strip (aesthetic presentation, that is, it covers the metal plate to look nice or pretty; it is also very cheap) Thank you very much for sharing. Hi, sorry I thought I had already responded to this comment. I was not able to resolve this issue for my laptop as the chipset was blown. However this may not be the case for you. If you follow through the same steps that I did you should be able to find out what the problem is. Hopefully the issue will be something simple to fix.

Hi Everybody, the laptop I had for my repair this week turned out to be just a BIOS re-program, so it was not worth making a video on. So, this afforded me the opportunity to put forward my proposed solution for the hinge problem that we see on many of the modern Dell laptops. I've been thinking about this for a while, and this is the most practical and least expensive solution I can come up with! The items used to carry out the work in this video are: 6 x M3 Screws With Washers Flat Steel Bar 1000mm x 16mm x 2mm 2.5mm Drill Bit 3mm Tap File Grey Spray Paint Please feel free put in the comments below your own opinions / criticisms / optimizations on my solution.
Great approach. I repair in a Repair Cafe - max 3 hour stint, before you are thrown out. Also had failures with hot glue. Superglue did not dry fast enough either. My next attempt when I get one will be super glue and backing powder next. Just do not have the time and machinery to do this in a repair cafe, but other than buying a new lid, it is the best solution (in my eyes) Do loosen the hinge slightly.
Hi Karl, I was thinking is there any way of making this practical, so that I could use this solution for every laptop that comes in. The drilling and tapping is very easy and can be done in 5-10 minutes. Cutting, sanding and spray painting the flat steel cost me quite a bit of time. However, if I had the flat steel prepared in advance (cut to correct length, sanded to remove sharp edges, and painted silver), then I think my solution would be quicker than swopping screen / wifi /webcam to a new back cover. I will try on the next one that comes in. When I do replace the back cover, I'm always conscious that the system already failed, so I really loosen the hinges as much as I can. But I think the crux of the issue is that moulding the brass inserts in to the plastic back cover is not a good design.
@@therepairshare673 Nice idea, thought about it too in making it easier. If you have a workshop set up metal on-hand, right thickness cut to size, burr and sharp corner removal, measure, and then drill and tap in 10 mins and smooth off the burrs. Filed screws on top will come loose, unless you applied locktite or something. It will be heavier, the person wants your skill for less than a refurb lid :) Aluminium would give you less work, and no painting, but might be thicker? and you will need a finer screw thread Another one I have seen is to pop-rivet the top on, using big washers, but it looked really nasty, but on an old cheap laptop??? With glue, I believe you use the hottest setting on your air wand to heat the stick directly, not using a glue gun. Plus you get different type of stick temps and adhesions the problem is the hinges have no common specs. Plus some are located at the bottom of the panel, while others at the back of the panel. Also with glue, you need clamps. There is also something stronger than baking soda (not baking powder - different) which is graphite powder, and graphite powder has a much slower setting time than baking soda. Some have mixed in 10 percent soda into graphite. I have not tried any additives yet. The key to all this is Surface prep - rough sandpaper, and holding the joint steady while it sets

Hello. a) If you remove (desoldering) that small ceramic capacitor and then measure Pin 9 on the Super I/0 with respect to ground, that is, place the red tip on pin 9 and the black one to a known ground (screw hole and/or the metal chassis of a USB port): Does it no longer indicate a short circuit? b) On the PU801 (6 pin smd IC) with the multimeter in diode test: Black meter tip to pin 2 and red tip to pins 4, 5, 6, 1 and 3 (one by one) No reading indicates short circuit? c) Are the 5V always present? To run the heat sink fans that protect the chipset. Another way to say it, although the chipset shows an image that it is running hot, the camera temperature I saw was 15 Celsius because the current injected was 100 mA. If, upon increasing the current to 500 mA, I had seen a temperature of 55 Celsius or higher, I would say that the probability that the chipset itself was damaged is very high. In other words, I suspect the Super I/O IC that, since it does not have 1.8V on pin 9, it does not send the order to activate the chipset. Thanks for sharing. All the best.
Hi Carlos, thanks for taking the time to make a detailed comment. I should have clarified in the video that I started injecting very low, but brought up to about 3A at 1.8V by the time I took that recording with the thermal camera. With my thermal camera, there is an offset between the thermal camera and the real camera, which can lead to confusion as to which component is getting warm - I may be carrying out some plastic welding to cure this! I brought it up to the full 5A in the hope of conclusively determining the fault component by touch, but even with 5A going through the board, nothing was getting warm. Santa is bringing me a 10A power supply on the 25th - well I asked for one anyway.

Watching the Thermal Camera, the chip burning seems to be the small chip near the Battery connector... and seems to be the Bios Chip.. Not Chipset.. but don't have the schematics... 🤔
Unfortunately there is a bad offset with the cheap thermal camera I have. I eventually put the full 5A in to the short and it is only the chipset that gets warm. :-(
More spare parts! Last week I paid $140 for two 17-inch Dell Inspiron laptops. One had broken hinge screw mounts, and the other one had a dead PCH on the motherboard, so I swapped motherboards and added the extra parts to my stash.

Hi ! Did you simply remove the bad capacitor or replaced it ?
Thanks for watching. It is usually best practice to find out the value of the blown capacitor (either by checking schematic or testing another similar parallel capacitor), but generally the laptop will work without the capacitor.

Oh believe me I get them too, I just tend not to use for content. I am conscious that there is a danger that we keep fixing the same problem every week though.
