Switching Layouts for Model Railroads
I am currently experiencing technical difficulties with my computer. While I resolve this issue, please enjoy this silent switching video from December 2023, showcasing one last time the "all white" look that adorned it for so long. This video has appeared in parts in many other videos as content filler and is, at least for me, an enjoyable and relaxing watch when I crave some train spotting.

    I had an N-scale switching layout which gave me a lot of pleasure, with one or two glaring problems... the trackwork was terrible, and I had rapido couplers. Oh, and it was DCC. Watching the movements on your layout make me realise how much more heft HO has, and now I am dissatisfied. Bah. Your trains - and the way you run them - look so much more realistic, and that all makes me think I should get back into the hobby in HO instead. Thankyou for the video, but, rats, now I have to start all over again!

    • @SouthDown
      @SouthDown 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Please don't get discouraged! The fastest way to get to what you want is to learn from the experience of being dissatisfied, even if starting all over again isn't great--I know, this is my second layout after I scrapped the mess that was my first. The aspect of modelling I love the most is the realistic slow speeds, slow starts, and slow stops of consisted models, so the "heft" you see is all programmed in. You can make these models jack rabbit down the tracks as well. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. I didn't expect this video to generate any comments because it is strictly switching at a calm and relaxing pace and the kind of thing I really enjoy watching, but for sure I thought I was alone on this. Appreciate your feedback!

    Too many camera cuts in this one. The tempo of the editing should match the tempo of the subject. Here, your subject is trains moving slowly, but you have eleven cuts in the first minute alone. Especially with the sound levels changing at every cut, I just find this unwatchable. I wanted a nice relaxing time watching your beautiful slow-moving trains, but everything's just jumping about hyperactively.

    • @SouthDown
      @SouthDown 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the feedback! Just needs to be more constructive as you clearly seem to know a thing or two about video editing but are only providing the criticism part of it. Perhaps the video coming out July 1st may be more to your liking: it’s a single cut from a single angle with 18 minutes of slow shunting with nothing more than engine sounds.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SouthDown The constructive part is the tempo of the cuts matching the tempo of the subject. Here, things are moving slowly and nothing much is happening, so you don't need a lot of cuts. Just cut when there's something new to show. For example, once the train's passed one point, you might cut to it viewed from another point. Or when it starts going off in a different direction.

    • @SouthDown
      @SouthDown 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Officer! That man! (pointing). He said he wants to see my Rooster! 😁 I'm not picking on the builder or his layout in particular, but something about locomotive sound always seems off to me; like it's too loud for the scene, or the distance between the operator and the locos (yes I hear idling and moving diesels in the rail yard only 2 blocks from my house, but it's more muted). Or lacking the size of real locomotives the sound somehow makes the trains oddly more toylike. I've never quite figured it out (gee, really, ya think?!).

    • @SouthDown
      @SouthDown 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You’re absolutely right! Even with the biggest speakers that would fit into those models, you’ll never get true-to-life sounds, so at some point you accept it versus no sound at all. Having said that, I’d like to try connecting a decoder directly to an amplifier with a subwoofer and see how that goes :)

    "I'm left wanting more..." That was Bob Hope's mantra throughout his many decades in show biz: "Always leave them wanting more!" It worked well for him, and it seems to work well for you. Your layout provides a venue for both simple and more complex op sessions. Sometimes, just shuffling a couple of cars satisfies the itch. Sometimes it takes a bit more. Either way, your layout can handle it. BTW, I like the patched-out look of your locos. This is how they'd appear on most shoestring short lines, acquired 2nd or 3rd hand after their service on a Class 1 line was done. Repaint jobs, while nice, cut into the bottom line without improving operability.

    I’ve purchased 6 Athearn Genesis locomotives and have had good luck with them, but now after just one year of operation, I have two of the locomotives that won’t make it though an arrival track with 5 turnouts without stalling at each one. The track is immaculately clean, the wheels are cleaned, and the locomotives have both been properly lubricated. I love the Athearns because they are super quiet at any speed, where BLI locomotives (I have three of them) sound like they are running on a gravel road. I even sent one back to Broadway Limited for repair and it came back with a note that said that is the standard sound for their locomotives. My wife (bless her heart) bought me a BLI 2-8-0 Consolidation steamer and I was excited to see if this had that same grinding sound. Yep… sure does. So, you have to run BLI’s with the sound up very loud to mask the gravelly sound of their decoders. I had considered Rapido, but no longer. Thanks for the information.

    Whats the dimensions of your shelf? What Kind of Locomotive is that and where did you get it from?

    • @SouthDown
      @SouthDown หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s 245 cm long and 35 cm wide or about 8 feet long and 14 inches wide. The locomotive is a very old Athearn Blue Box. You can usually find them very cheap at train shows. You don’t want them too too old as those older motors are going to blow your decoder with its 2 amp limit.

    Blueboxes are horrendously slept on, they make up like half my fleet and everyone at the club is always saying how good my stuff looks

    Great video, great story and great subject. Your track plan is excellent. I could never care for the "famous" so-called time saver. Again well done.

      Thank you! As someone wiser than me once said, the best way to win is to lose. Looking back at those photos and videos, it's amazing how amateurish it all looked.

    Whoa! That's one heck of a Timesaver. Well, you learn something from everything, and I have to say that I had a similar experience, but instead with poor layout construction. I started over, learned from my experience and did it right. I also once thought more was better, but I now realize it is often the opposite. PS: I love that ex BN SD9 you have! Is it a Proto 2000 model?

      The best way to do better is to learn from our mistakes. And yes, that is an old Life Like Proto 2000 picked up on eBay that now has a sound decoder. The weathering removed the plastic toy feel and gave it a well-kept but hard-working look and feel. Aside from bringing back pleasant childhood memories from an old Athearn Blue Box model, I absolutely love the BN livery. Always flattering to get your feedback.

    Just discovered your channel and have subscribed. I love the way you run switching ops with nice and slow moving equipment. In particular, I admire the fact that you strive to couple without nudging the car or cut that you're coupling onto. I also think it's cool that you seem to off set your couplers, in the clear, when preparing to shove into a siding. This allows the train to reverse and pull out with out having to uncouple in more congested areas. Thank you.

      Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate the fact that you noticed that kind of detail in my "performance" and that the way I operate was enjoyed. I obsess a little with locomotive performance and while one of those models has since been decommissioned, its replacement has been tweaked to run just as slowly. To more switching ops!
