Reviving a $30,000 Server from 2000 - Dell PowerEdge 6400 - SnowFoxComputing
These three PowerEdge 6400 servers from 2000 have taken on quite the poor treatment for way too long. Watch to see how getting just one back up and running turns out.

Its the cpu bottleneck. Its actually intense game bc only uses one core. You cutting down gpu settings wont do much if cpu bottlenecked. But nice experiment. ,,, i played this on am Amd athlon 1ghz cpu single core and nvidia fx5200 by bfg, 128mb ddr, it ran this game great. I think 800x600 all day

Had one of these when they were new. Had to be returned because it would Blue screen on boot (likely a symptom of the issue with capacitors at the time) and the male end of the power supply was HORRIBLE when it came to tearing and requiring being held a special way before finally giving up. Seemed to go through those once a year for 5 years. Wasn't as lucky with the battery as you were - at its best, it could easily play a feature-length movie, but after those 5 years, it had just enough capacity for a few minutes of light tasks. And, like with the power supply, being proprietary hardware meant it was not gonna be easy to replace.

Geforce2mx does not generally need a fan. But it also won't hurt. The ones i have had, had slightly more generous heatsinks though, i always got ELSA cards, so i suppose it's par for the course to plop a fan on there and can give you some overclocking capability. Though the card wasn't designed to take a fan, since there's no 2-pin fan connector on there. Back in the day i had a Mitsubishi DiamondPro CRT monitor which would switch resolutions instantly in a split second. Games which switched resolution on menu were something that wasn't too common but existed, i think one of Deus Ex games does that because menu resolution is fixed, while the game itself will run in any resolution. When VGA LCDs came in, that suddenly became an issue, because the monitor has to calibrate itself to the exact pixel clock and skew of the new mode by extracting this implied clock from the pixel edges. You'd think getting a nicer card with a more stable pixel clock would help, but the minimum time that the monitor clock-hunts is hardcoded in the monitor firmware. It does "work" in reverse though, if you have a shitty video card or if the image is pure single colour at first, the image will come on but the monitor will still be visibly clock hunting, with the image being blurry a little distorted and shifting by half a pixel or a pixel for a few seconds until it finds the signal.

Just seeing the 6 pci slots stirs mental juices. Even back then, it was uncalled for, spacing accounted. You had video (agp) sound & ethernet if not integrated. Good stuff 😊 Source a tnt2 or geforce 256 & youre set. That mx is half the bandwidth at 64.

Very nostalgic, thank you. I built a 3-way cluster using the dual CPU model (PE4400) in the early 2000's and remember how well built these units were. I almost forgot the struggle i had heaving them into a rack after converting them from their tower config. Interestingly they got replaced by the same 2850 too.

Glad to see you back! Sorry about the living situation, I can only imagine having to make decisions about what stays and what goes in my hoard. Looking at the 6400's They look like they were actually running for a long time in an extremely moist environment, not just sitting. The mold/mildew spotting patterns are exactly the same as the inside of an AC handler. Also glad you got them clean, it was starting to trip my OCD button! The best rust removal system you can get is evaporust. You can get a quart for about $10, and it's reusable for a very long time. Because it's a chelator, and not an acid, It won't affect plating and it only removes rust, leaving paint and other undamaged surface coatings intact. A close second, but much cheaper is citric acid, which is sold as a dishwasher spot remover under the name Lemishine, or in bulk for making wine and other uses. Flash rust usually isn't an issue with evaporust. I'd love to have a quad CPU server. I think I'd prefer a Compaq Pentium Pro setup from the Mid 90's, like the ones I had at my first job, but I'm sure my wife would divorce me if I brought in a 300 pound junk computer to go with the 3 dozen other machines. The only Dell Server I have currently is a Poweredge 300SC, although It barely counts, since it's basically a workstation class case with a Dual CPU board inside it. It's got a 700 MHz PIII currently, but since it's It's dual capable I'd like to upgrade it, but since 1Ghz PIIIs are bringing stupid money, I've grabbed a couple of 866 Mhz CPUs to stuff in it. My thoughts are a lot like yours, stick a PCI video card in it, a Soundblaster and try to run games on XP.

I had a coworker in her early 60's about 10 years ago who was a cat hoarder, and I mean a REAL cat hoarder. HUNDREDS in her house. She was as super-nice lady, but seriously bad hoarding. She had squandered her 35 year corporate 401K on getting surgeries for elderly feral "rescue" cats that she couldn't even get near because they were so wild. She asked me look at one of her PC's because it was starting to overheat and shut down. I assumed that because she kept the menagerie out of her general living area that the PC would be OK. I was wrong. It was a mid-tower ATX white-box PC with an early socket 462 Athlon or Duron in it. looked clean on the outside, smelled faintly of cat pee and burning. I was shocked when I got it open. The motherboard had no discernible components visible. There was a full half-inch of cat hair and dander encrusting it. You could JUST see the tops of the capacitors. The CPU cooler and fan was completely full of cat hair and no longer spun The PSU grilles were fully packed with cat hair as was the intake fan. Worst of all, the ammonia tang of cat pee when the case cover came off. Portions of the case had literally rusted away from cat pee internally. I took it straight outside and just had to hose it out with a pressure washer. It was the most unsanitary thing I've ever seen. After pulling the motherboard and running it through the dishwasher, tossing the optical drive and floppy and power supply straight in the bin I hooked the dried motherboard and cards up to my test set and I'll be darned if the thing didn't just POST and start loading XP. Fortunately the cat pee had mostly missed the MB. I tossed it in a spare case, with some salvaged drives and got it back to her. She was tickled pink. When I asked her about the pee, she said that one of her "boys" liked to lie on the case for warmth and he had a renal issue that caused him to constantly leak urine. It apparently ran down the gap between the plastic front of the case and e powder coated cover and pooled in the bottom and card cages. I suggested that she do something to prevent that and she looked at me like I had grown a third head.

My cousin was attending a vocational school, and there was an abandoned box truck in a field behind the school. Sitting in the truck was a forgotten Mac SE FDHD. The poor thing sat out in the Florida sun and weather for decades. Not surprisingly, a lot of things were badly corroded, including the power switch, chassis, and even the PRAM battery exploded on the logic board. Yet after jury rigging in a new power supply switch, the Mac came to life! Not surprisingly, the floppy drive and hard drive were completely shot, and I eventually had to replace the analog board due to several components being missing or broken, but I got the old gal up and running semi-reliably. I'd look into swapping in the SCSI backplane from the third server, so that more drives can be utilized. (That's assuming that one can't be saved.) Would be really neat to see how much storage space can be installed!

Had a Heath-Zenith version back in the early 90's. Had to add a power plug and ordered the O/S from Heath then wrote a short assembly program to copy the O/S onto the HD. @snowfoxcomputing ปีที่แล้ว

Hello! Apologies for the late response. I am not sure of your particular computer, but if they look like these, then the power button makes contact with a plastic rod that spans the width of the chassis, and that goes to a switch on the AT power supply itself. The button doesn't actually connect to the motherboard like the standard ATX front panel pins we are used to nowadays. I hope that helps!

Apparently the bulging capacitor is quite common in those motherboards, mine was bulging too, the same exact one. I pulled it out and now the second memory channel doesn't work, pc wont boot at all if I have any ram on that channel, I'll have to find a replacement I guess. I had not watched the entire video before commenting, your ram issue is also that pesky bulging capacitor.

Oh yes the power adapters are still on eBay. They are the old Dell standard 3-pin models PA-7 for 70 watt and PA-9 for 90 watt. You can search for those models or simply Inspiron 8200 power adapter. Searching for the adapters by their model numbers can get you a cheaper one sometimes, just be sure to see if there's images of the connectors themselves. Looks like you can get one for between $15-$20 shipped, cheaper if you dig around for a while. Good luck!
