All About ... Charlotte Fire Station 18
This video is all about the Charlotte NC Fire Department Station 18. The station, which first opened in 1970, is home to Engine 18 and Tower 18. This video looks at the history of the station, including the apparatus assigned to the engine and ladder companies, as well as the the stations response area and run stats. As always, thanks to the various sources of photos and information for this video including the City of Charlotte and the Charlotte Fire Department, including the 2014 Charlotte Fire Department History, Charlotte F.D. Trucks (the #1 source for Charlotte Fire Department apparatus), Legeros Fire Blog, Charlotte Historical Photo Archives collection, and the Charlotte Observer.

      Thanks. I am going off several rosters that are admittedly a work in progress and not always accurate. I start with them and I try and match them to old photos to figure out the actual trucks. In this case, (like the Seagraves in the video), one roster has both a 85' platform and the straight stick assigned to L18. But I am taking all this info and creating my own 'accurate'' roster. So, thanks for the info. I remember the 85' platforms, Kannapolis still has one as a reserve (L54).

    Of course, the new battalion line companies run a lot of calls together and their current batt configuration so it would only make sense to put them all together in the same battalion geographically

    You may already have something in the works, but I think it would be neat to piggyback on this video and expand on the areas covered in each battalion response area ie neighborhoods, landmarks exc. I say this because the recent department yearbook touched on this from a station perspective and I thought it was pretty interesting. Just an idea I wanted to put out there for you to consider nothing more or less and I appreciate all you do!👨‍🚒🚒🇺🇸⭐️

    Thanks for the update on the new 9th Battalion. It is great to the Charlotte fire department expanding and growing as well adding fire companies and new stations. I am also most impressed with Charlotte putting 4 new Elevating Platforms in service considering that for a while they didn't have any Elevating Platforms in service. I am looking forward to seeing further updates in the future.

    I do have one small question in regards to these changes if you know and if not, that’s fine. It’s just a question out of curiosity more less. Do you know what will happen to the current response areas of the stations being reassigned to different battalions? I assume probably just redistributing those current first do areas to other stations within the same battalions? On a sidenote, based on what I know about the current geographic response areas, the designation of the reassignment of some of the stations into different battalions make very logical sense to me.⭐️🇺🇸 example I know station 12 currently runs a lot of calls with Stations 10 and two already same goes for station 31 currently running a lot of calls with second battalion companies. I have always been confused as to why station 40 is not currently in battalion for anyway. and station five runs a lot of calls with battalion one companies as it is and station 14’s response area pick up close to station 6 ‘s first due area. So I’m proud to say I believe they got it right and put a lot of logical fault into redrawing the battalion lines geographically.⭐️🇺🇸🚒👨‍🚒

    • @wgkpublicsafetyimages9153
      @wgkpublicsafetyimages9153 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The response areas for each station won't change with the battalion realignment. They are set up based on response times. Essentially they are set up so that every city address belongs to the station that it is closest to. Areas will only change when a new station goes into service. For example, when 45 goes into service, the boundaries will essentially be the halfway points (in travel time) between 45 and the surrounding stations (22, 27, 34 and 15). The battalions are more about geographic 'consistency' and company distribution and equity, so the BCs have even workloads and resources. Dispatching is strictly based on distance (closest companies) and battalion boundaries are frequently crossed, especially in the area of uptown.

But if you are asked to leave private property by the owner or agent, and you don't, you could be subject to arrest for trespass. I have had that happen a couple of times. Typically it has been on rental property (apartments or motels) where the owners/agents are concerned about 'bad press'. That is when a good telephoto lens comes in handy so you can photograph from off the property.

      That is a tough question to answer. Are you limited to an area? If not, go to FDNY, Baltimore or Detroit. More generally, I recommend working for a big city department in an older city. But do your homework. That job is a lot more than just fighting fire. You're gonna be there for 25+ years so you better like the department.

    • @wgkpublicsafetyimages9153
      @wgkpublicsafetyimages9153 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Same basic rules... I would recommend larger department that serves an older city (or atleast parts of the city are older). FYI, everyone around here runs EMS and those will be the majority of the responses. I would also look at the departments you're interested in and see how it operates. Things like staffing levels, pay, training, work schedules and equipment are all important. Easiest way to do that is visit the departments and talk to the crews. The 2 largest departments around here are Charlotte and Concord. Both are great departments but that doesn't mean they are the only options. I would also consider Gastonia, Mooresville, Kannapolis, Salisbury, and Monroe. Finally, there are some smaller, often former volunteer departments that are really growing and hiring. That means departments like Matthews, Mint Hill, Hunterville, Cornelius and Harrisburg may also be good options for you. I recommend you do some research and I wish you good luck.

    Hey buddy, I had an idea today and suggestion for your all about series. I know you’ve already done a video on the modern day. CFD and some of this you may have already touched on in that video. I was just wondering if you might consider covering some additional topics and or angles in the series one being the earlier history of CFD and what has contributed to shaping them into the department they are today. Second I know that you have covered several individual stations in the CFD family, which I love that you have taken that unique approach.. just merely as a suggestion. I was wondering if you might consider doing a video series of sorts on the different battalions in the city and cover a little bit of what has shaped each battalion over the years.. again these are merely suggestions and ideas. Nothing more nothing less and this goes without saying that I appreciate all of the content you put together for us. Let me know if I can be of any assistance with resources or anything if need be. I hope you enjoy your evening and happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well.

      It isn't in the current station plan and doesn't really seem very likely in the near future. The station is about 40 year old and is currently being remodeled. Compare that to Station 11 (which is getting replaced), is 25 years older that Station 2. I am sure the department would like a larger facility, but also I think CFD likes the location. Combine those factors with the cost of land in South End and new station 2 seems like it is a long way in the future.

    What is the minimum staffing for engines and ladders. And ladders with pumps and hose are usually called quints. Because they are called ladders which means rescue and ventilation, why spend the money for pumps and hose? Do the ladders go on rescue assignments like mvc's with entrapment (I assume a heavy rescue and engine company also responds).

    • @wgkpublicsafetyimages9153
      @wgkpublicsafetyimages9153 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All Charlotte companies (Engines, Ladders and Rescues) have a minimum staffing of 4. Charlotte has set up their engines and ladders so they can operating almost interchangeably. In two company stations (an engine and a ladder), calls that only require a single company are assigned on an alternating basis, so ladders need to be able to extinguish fires (such as car or dumpster fire). Many of Charlotte's two company stations became two company stations because of call volume. For example, one reason Ladder 20 will go in service sometime this year, is that E20 has been running 4000+ calls a year. FYI, the rescue companies do not alternate calls, although they do pick up assignments if the engine is busy. MVCs without entrapment is a single company response, so it can be either an engine or ladder. Entrapment protocol adds a ladder and a Rescue. Assignments become a little more "traditional" on structures, although it is not unusual to hear engine companies assigned to vent or ladders on fire attack. As I pointed out in the video, some of this may change in the coming years as the department has started diversifying their fleet, although I saw that the TDAs on order will still have a pump and water, which is kind of unique for tillers. I hope that helps.

    As a past volunteer and part time firefighter, I’ve run into many brands of engines and ladder/platform trucks. I I will full admit, I am biased for Pierce brand, after working with e-one, kme, spartan, and so many others I can’t even remember, Pierce always came out on top for us. Maintenance, support from the company, and ease of operation, always had good luck with Pierce. E-one would be a distant second, not close because the truck is good for about a year, then the E-one curse hits, and stuff starts not working right. A southern fire truck manufacturer that in New England, especially New Hampshire, with the temperature ranges, from -30 degrees to over a hundred degrees, e one didn’t perform well, long term. Plus, most of our major fires, happened during the coldest day nature could find, mill fires, industrial, farm houses in the middle of nowhere with minimal or no water supply. It was interesting.

      I totally get the personal preferences. I am old enough that I prefer Mack C and CF apparatus. But as a photographer, today my preferences are all about looks, which has nothing to do with functionality. My concern is more about the lack of options today with all the manufacturers being bought up. We are getting to point where we have just a few large manufacturers. When any business grows and starts to 'lock up' the market, they run the risk of losing focus, quality and good customer service. I think that's one of the reasons we are seeing cities like Charlotte and Raleigh diversifying their fleets, its sends a message that the manufacturers still need to 'work' to get (and keep) their business.

    I do have two questions as well. One may seem a little naïve. That being said I know Charlotte fire has 43 stations and operates two engine companies out of station 42 does engine 65 not count as a second engine for statistical purposes. I’m only asking because I honestly don’t know. I’m not trying to correct the information you provided in the video at all. Also, do you still plan on doing a video about Charlotte fire alarm? I know when we spoke before you were tentatively trying to put a video together if you could find some good sources of information. Also do you have anyone Charlotte station videos planned? As always I greatly appreciate the work and effort you put into your channel and content! Please keep the awesome content coming! Enjoy your week!⭐️🇺🇸🚒👨‍🚒

      Engine 65 is counted as an engine company. Just like a normal two piece house (engine/ ladder), they rotate calls. If there is a box in their first due, they both will go and whoever gets there first (tends to be whoever pulls out of the bays first), usually is the first arriving Engine on scene and they’ll be command until they pass it off to the Battalion Chief. If Station 42 is the 3rd due engine on a box, it’ll be either 42 or 65 depending who ran the last call (if 42 was assigned on the previous call, 65 would be added to the house fire box). If Station 42 is the 2nd due station, then more than likely both 42 and 65 will get assigned. Charlotte flip flops calls to reduce wear and tear on their apparatus.

    Great video, our department ordered a quint based partially off Harrisburg's specifications. It's like a Harrisburg and Chattanooga quint had a baby. We also ordered from Smeal/Atlantic Coast Fire Trucks.

    The thumbnail is a confusing perspective because the water tower looks like it is attached to the fire engine

      Hmmm, you may be correct. I let You Tube pick the thumbnail, perhaps i will change it.
