Round and Square Boats
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 ต.ค. 2018
My name's Steve. I'm an amateur enthusiast who likes to waste time and money on sailing boats, especially wooden boats. I have a 57 year old Folkboat Called Paul Jones which I keep on the Forth in the East of Scotland. When I got the boat it was in poor shape. I've tidied it up, fixed some planking, screwed in some screws and done some painting and varnishing. The boat needs lots more work. I'm keen to improve the boat over time and get it to a state where it may survive another 50 years but I'm determined to keep it being a boat rather than a boat-shaped-thing sitting endlessly in a yard. It goes in the water every year and is sailed as often as possible. This means that sometimes corners need to be cut... The tricky question is what is the right task to do next and how to go about it.
The aim of this channel is to share some of my experiences and hopefully collect some tips and advice from others about how best to keep a little wooden boat floating on a real world sea.

Brixham Trawler Provident BM28. Work gets underway...
Since I last posted a vid, lots has happened. Loads of racing on Amokura (Must get round to editing the footage), a couple of international news events……. But most important of all………. I’ve upgraded from the Folkboat…………….. a bit.
With my parter-in-crime Morag, we’ve bought Provident, a 98 year old Brixham trawler. This video shows the first few months of work.
We will be doing more upgrades inside, then heading to the west of Scotland where we will be welcoming (we hope) lots of guests on board for sailing holidays around the amazing islands and lochs.

If there are any aspects of the project that you think may make for an interesting video.... leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

Amokura... Dun Laoghaire to Dingle
มุมมอง 7K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Amokura is a classic yawl, designed by Fred Shepherd and built by Moody's on the Hamble in 1939. I'm enormously fortunate to have been asked to help sail Amokura in an off-shore racing campaign which will culminate with our entry in the 2019 edition of the Fastnet race. Before we can do this we are trying to gain enough experience in other races and hoping to figure out the best way to race a b...

Folkboat Open Hull Surgery

Episode 8. This one is quite long and is definitely not mainstream. It shows the continuing work I’ve been doing on Paul Jones, my English Folkboat. I’ve been routing out old seams, fitting splines, caulking, painting and generally panicking in an attempt to get the boat ready to launch. As in previous episodes, I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing so any comments would be particularly welcome.
Folkboat Fixings (Bolts, Screws, Nails and Goo)
มุมมอง 19K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Episode 7 I’m trying to get “Paul Jones”, my 1961 English Folkboat ready for the next sailing season. In this episode I’ve started fixing things back together. This involves doing lots of processes that I’ve never done before... I've been contacted by Dave, who is also working on a Folkboat. He very kindly pointed out that when I trimmed the copper nails I left them a little too long. This can ...

Episode 6 Work continues on Paul Jones, my 1961 English Folkboat. I've been digging about in the bilges and made a few discoveries, most of which have been a bit depressing. But I've got on with fixing some rot around a chain plate, making new floor timbers and making new keel bolts. As always, it's really hard to decide which jobs to do and which to ignore.

Episode 5 I've finally got round to building a shelter for "Paul Jones" my 1961 English Folkboat. I need to glue some splines into the hull as well as doing lots of painting, varnishing and general bodging of leaky decks. I'm hoping that the cover will allow the wood to dry out enough to allow glue, paint and magic goo to stick. It may even keep me dry while I'm working.

Episode 4 Work continues on Paul Jones, my 1961 English Folkboat. Scraping paint off the inside of a wooden boat is slow work. I don't think it's ever been done since the boat was built. But... It's a great way to get to know a boat in intimate detail... and its given me a much better understanding of how it's put together. Much more immediately gratifying... I've started to remove some of the ...
Folkboat Demolition (with human interest)

Episode 3 I’m working on “Paul Jones”, my 1961 English Folkboat. After a season of pitiful racing results it’s been lifted out at a yard in Grangemouth. In this episode I start stripping out the inside of the boat. I can see where the hull is leaking… but… I’m not entirely sure how to fix it, so any suggestions would be very welcome. Also featuring… the rebirth of an Alfred Mylne yacht… some wa...
Folkboat Lift Out

Episode 2 Paul Jones, my 1961 English Folkboat being lifted out at Forth and Clyde Marine Services. The yard is in the upper Forth on the East of Scotland and mainly services canal boats. With the boat on the hard I can see that there has been a little movement around the keel. I think I'm going to need to investigate various fastenings, including the keel bolts to see if I can get things in a ...
Round and Square Boats 1 End of season

Paul Jones is my English Folkboat. It was built in 1961 by Harry Feltham. Since I bought the boat I've generally tidied it up, rebuilt the cockpit, refastened the stem, and worked on paint and varnish. As winter approaches I'm wondering what to work on next. Keel bolts are high on the list along with fixing a leak. The keel timber was soaked in fresh water for a while before I took the boat on....
Ah amazing! I did many hours on her when she was with Island Cruising Club. I lost track of her sister Hoshi. I think she is still in France🤔
Still amazed at your video production. Excellent editing, sound quality and story line. You must have some experience in this field. Thumbs up.
Came here to see you boat shed construction and got caught up in your repairs. Nicely done video. You're deep into now mate. Its satisfying to see older woodies being saved/restored. I'll be working on my Chris Craft Sea Skiff when I get a shelter built. Until then, its under tarps to protect from weather. Will follow your progress.
Water you keeps away from the outside
Should have posted cat videos. Beats sanding.
Just seeing this now, Aug 2024. I hope you and your lovely boat are still going strong. Can you update us? Thanks, John
Is there a reason as to why not just sandblast the interior? Instead of manual scraping?
It would be interesting (and, of course beneficial) if some chemist developed an additive for the linseed oil that was toxic to fungi!
Have you got it sailing?
Thanks for sharing your wonderful story with us.
Probably took longer than the 20 minutes to watch it.
Great vid mate!
Lots of brave pills. Well done!
i did that d2d , hit 23kts down the irish sea before damaging our steering gear off the tuskar rock and having to retire , have had better luck in the more recent editions
Hi. Have watched these really excellent vids on the restoration a couple of times. Like you, my youtube videoing has taken a bit of a back seat lately. Am now living in Edinburgh and sail from Crammond, and seriously considering a Folkboat in the next 2 - 3y. Let me know if you'd be happy to get in touch: 'Bigbad the Sailor'
Enjoyed that. Thanks for posting.
Amazing to see what such dedication and care can bring about. Beautiful.
Enjoyed that. Thanks for posting.
I realize I'm late to the party, But you've given new life to your sailboat. An excellent job done well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, experience and story. Yes you did it, You can be proud of yourselves.
Hi screws are most likely only below the water line, the cause is galvanic corrosion and oil should be mixed with turpentine preferably pine. It gives a good smell in the boat. Hope this helps you
How is your boat now?
Hello!! great job. Congratulation for you. Sorry by my ignorance, but left me ask. For what the cord in 11:57. Is necessary the cord? It cold not to be glue wood with wood directly?
Excellent series on your restoration :) Really appreciate some of the great tips and methods - and she looked lovely when finished. I hope you've had a few years of great sailing and fun with her! Cheers!
Great stuff! Thank you.
Lovely boat, lovely presentation, lovely you! Thank you.
So many challenges, so many ingenious workarounds! Well done!
Amazing job. Only comment is that CT1 does not last as well as sikaflex. I’ve had to redo things I sealed with CT1 after a couple years but Sikaflex never dies
Thoroughly enjoyed the restoration. Very crafty and resilient! Cheers!
Ten out of ten mate
Nicely done new paint!
Hello .What is happening now with your boat ?⛵
Well shown splining.
Hi Steve, I have a folkboat in a very sorry state, want to save whats left of it before it is too far gone, have been studying your videos
Epic EPIC fortitude my man!!! Congratulations; well done. Thank you!
Time for a few sailing videos, see how you're progressing with sailing a big gaffer, it's a lot different from 'yotting'....
We've done quite a bit of sailing now including taking the boat from Cornwall to Scotland. There's a video on our site of the trip. www.providentsailing.co.uk/blog/provident-heads-north We're starting to get the hang of top sails and peak halyards. Parking with an offset prop is still the most exciting bit. I expect I'll be posting more renovation vids over the winter and some sailing videos next year.
Hi Steve, could tell me what yard this is, please? I’ve got need of a place to do things in the Forth area. Not a full refit, more a fettle.
The yard was run by Steve Kelvin and is called either Kelvin Marine or forth and Clyde Marine. It's in Grangemouth. I'm not sure if its still operational.
It is great to see Provident has a new loving home. I sailed on her a few times when she was with Trinity Sailing in Brixham. She is a lovely characterful boat and look forward to sailing on her again. Showers too! luxury indeed. I've visited your website and subscribed to the mailing list. x
Fantastic news. This boat is very important to me, not least because my father designed a great deal of the interior during the last big refit in 1990-91 (including the water tank under the main table, if it is still there)
Good to hear from you. Yes the tanks are all still there. All shiny and clean. We have a few plans for some below deck alterations. It would be great to have a chat. If you find our website providentsailing.co.Uk you’ll find our email address.
Brilliant!............but I wanted to see the Folkboat finished!
With wooden boats it's never finished. Maybe you'd like to write the next chapter yourself? The folk boat needs a new home.
A whole lot of work in 6 minutes!
Hurrah !! Well done all round.
Can we see some content to do with the folk boat please? I watched all the refurb vids which were very interesting yet those have spiked further interest in seeing more. 👍
What an astounding labour of live. Brave, courageous and lonely work in a cold boatyard on one’s own!
Welldone sailor⁰great video informative cheers fair winds calm seas cheers
Building, transforming, eorking is essentially human
I wish I could have enough patience to do stuff like this. Great job! She's gorgeous.
Great to hear you remind people that you are fixing a boat not bearing your soul and sharing your private life with the general public . If kids want human interest they can attend a support group or better still move to California where all this nonscense started . Fair play to you it's hard work but worth doing right . I read reciently that the Jacobites held out on Bass Rock till 1794! Their last stand in the UK apparently .Looking forward to seeing you sail there soon please send my love to Crail! All the best j
Very entertaining. Thanks for making this video.
Steve, did much water come before the planks took up?
At the beginning of your video I see an outboard behind you for your boat. It looks to me like an English Seagull like was on the 22 ft wooden boat with open cockpit and full keel I learned to sail on as I grew up in Richmond on San Francisco Bay. Our Seagull was very reliable and easy to start and very light on gas when needed. I also raced against a number of Folkboats on the Bay just for fun but we weren't able to beat one but had fun giving chase. Nice video.
