Has the benefit that there is hardly anyone out here so no marina reservations are needed. Plenty of room everywhere!

I’m excited for a reverse loop! If they don’t fix the lock in Demopolis there may be many people doing a reverse loop. Would be interesting to see fuel cost and travel time comparison?

That would be nice for us. We would have company! Ed could probably figure that out with our gas receipts from last time we went up and back.

Give me a day or two and I’ll look back through Freebird’s fuel logs. Since we’ve made up and back trips before I should have the fuel consumption differential going up vs down river from Hammond Indiana to Green Turtle Bay.

Patrick, here are our fuel consumption details from our 2022 trip up and down the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Going up river against the current in the spring, from Green Turtle Bay in Kentucky to Hammond Indiana we burned 981 gallons of diesel. Going home down river with the current in the fall, over the same distance we used 503 gallons. That’s 478 gallons more going against the current! More than I imagined but worth every drop to spend the whole summer on Lake Michigan.

@@EdK-pe8vb That’s very helpful to know! Is Diesel about $4 per gallon - so maybe a $2,000 price difference. Wonder what the difference is in the number of hours the journey takes?

We usually take our time when we travel and stay multiple days at our favorite towns or marinas so it’s had to compare time. Going down river we did the 250 miles or so of the Mississippi in two days. You can find more details on cruising the rivers in the Freebird River Cruising Guide videos. Check out the Guide Video #2 covering the Mississippi River.

I am thinking about buying this boat; I’m actually going to look at one next week. Could you please let me know what’s the maximum range(going trawler speed) and any other advice you may have about this boat. Thanks

The 56 Carver Voyager holds 800 gallons of diesel. Our Voyager does not have the Volvo digital engine displays. So, our information is based upon our experience and electronic readouts taken during the survey. Water and wind conditions are big variables and we never run our tanks below a quarter tank. That being said we feel we can go at least 800 miles at trawler speed (8mph) and still have fuel in reserve.

Forgot to mentionFreebird has the Volvo D12 675 Horsepower Engines. Smaller Engines were available. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Good luck with your boat search. The Voyager is a great comfortable boat for long trips or a fun weekend.
