Keep Retrieving Instincts Sharp With Short Retrieves
Extending retrieves is great, and increasing obstacles with each retrieve challenges the dog to work harder and use its instincts to the full.
Don’t forget to also implement short and sweet retrieves, short bursts which your dog knows how to do well, just to keep things sharp that require no great effort. Just a little focus and steadiness.

Building Confidence Retrieving over Jumps
มุมมอง 232 หลายเดือนก่อน
Gradually building the dog’s confidence to retrieve over a jump obstacle. Take your time with this as a jump can change the dog’s entire mentality. Begin close up and send the dog over for a couple of retrieves. As its confidence builds, simply move back a step or two each time creating distance as you go. I am not too fussed about precision here, only that the dog learns to be confident and en...

      Shellie, there is no doubt about it that dogs sense our emotions. They are acutely sensitive to the energy we have. That will without a doubt dictate how they gravitate towards us or don’t. Remember it is a totally new experience for your new dog. At 4 months old she will be looking for security and strong leadership with her new family. See it as a new experience and focus on bonding confidently through play and positive emotions and she’ll come around.

    Wise words Max and so helpful. Too much pressure to be out there doing things in environments that haven’t been trained for and then the dogs gets the blame. Relationship and skill building first especially with your first dog, the training and mindset needed is as much for you as your dog! Do the work enjoy the rewards. Working with the whistle, long line, retrieves, impulse control you taught us, it’s so helpful to have a bag of tools, so to speak, to dip into and helps to concentrate my mind on what I can do rather than going blank and struggling with the behaviour - although this still happens! However, I know now that the training and learning is lifelong and is a pleasure and a privilege.

    Yes, I struggled with the long line and she wasn't fully grown. Got a 20 month old pointador that just charges. I worry that she will injure herself when she hits the end of it too. Not used it since I injured my shoulder a year ago. Training is now way behind due to that and some undesirable behaviours need fixed now, it was hard to train a high energy 10 month old with 1 arm😂 in the centre of town surrounded by lots of untrained dogs with no recall harassing us. I would dread seeing another dog, worst thing I could do but I had little control with 1 arm. 😢 Mostly healed now so seeing improvements in our training daily. Considering your recall training once I have put in some more ground work. You are right about the free run fields, they are great to burn some energy but no substitute for free roaming . She is missing out.

    • @Action4Dogs
      @Action4Dogs ปีที่แล้ว

      They are extremely strong dogs aren’t they, particularly once they are transfixed on a bird, scent, or similar. The most difficult part for owners like yourself is to find a location to train in. If you can research 2-3 relatively quieter areas and just hang out there as opposed to going a walk. It will more than likely take some patience, but chip away at getting your doc’s attention and finding a way to reward it. Work for engagement and then a release cue to allow it to sniff around. You don’t want to cover huge distance on a long line if the dog is hauling you all over the place. If the line is the only thing that connects you then work has to be done. I like to find tracks to work on as opposed to large open spaces. They key, and the hard work is in capturing your dog’s eyes. Research trainers with early bird dog training methods. Much if it is on finding suitable areas and working on engagement, obedience, and creatively finding a way to stimulate the dog so you can work together. I’ve used bird dummies and thin lines with movement of bird like items hung over trees, everything I can. If you have an older pointer, by that I mean a dog that has learned to use all of those senses and gotten to say, 18 months, without a foundation training in place, the work is tough going depending on the environment you live and walk in.

    Thanks for this. Just rescued a 15 month old lab who is proving a little agrophobic. Terrified of going into the garden, but is gaining in confidence in the home everyday. The more relaxed and confident he is in the home, the easier it will be - in time - to get him into the garden of his own accord. But it will take time.

    This is actually my favourite video of the month. Every time it makes me smile. You just have to love Springers, energy goes both ways and sometimes with Spaniels you just have to take a deep breath and remain emotionally detached. The thing I love about this video is its transparent and true, as a true a gundog training video as it gets. We see so much content of superb dogs without ever seeing how they are as novices before coming more advanced. Thank you so much to you and handler for a brilliant video and it brings such a smile to my face it brightens up my whole day. Would love to see a video of this wee dog again if you ever get the chance. :)

    Great points here. I’m looking to get a rescue dog and this is something I’ve considered as well; that it is a big change for the animal to adjust to. My question is how do you know when the dog is ready and adapted to see more people or socialize?

    • @Action4Dogs
      @Action4Dogs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes time as each dog is very different. The main focus to begin with is establishing your relationship and the trust that comes with that. The key is to take your time. Early walks and outings give you an opportunity to assess the dog and see where it’s preferences and concerns lie. After a few weeks you’ll get a good idea and see the dog’s character traits start to emerge as you build your bond. Take the time to find out about your dog firsts with soft exposures to the world, learn to communicate and work together. Then integrate and build little by little a step at a time. Don’t rush the process. It’s time we’ll spent.

    I rescued a one-year-old Lab/Terrier on July 1, 2021 who came from a humane society shelter where she lived in a crate, in a cage in a warehouse with 200+ other dogs. I have many Labs before but never a rescue dog. I had a LOT to learn. I learned that Ginger does best in a quiet home where she can get a lot of rest. She is definitely highly excited and over aroused girl. She wanted me with her at all times, even at her nap time. It has taken her 6 months to have the confidence and trust to go to my bed, alone and take a nap without me. A huge milestone for us all!

      There could be any number of reasons and the reasons likely change as she gets older. It is probably a mixture of emotions. You’re best to consult with a trainer who can observe and then advise.

    Very similar to our situation. 9 month Sprocker which we rehomed at 8 months. Similar lack of training and the same behaviours. What was your approach with this spaniel and how was it different to the way you train a younger puppy?

    • @Action4Dogs
      @Action4Dogs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very different approach with a pup as you have great influence on early behaviours. When a behaviour is practised it is strengthened, and in spaniels zoning in on wind events, most spaniel owners will testify to that. Not only does it involve going back to basics but it has a lot to do with distance control training, line work, whistle work, and keeping a strongly wired spaniel close. Once that canine sense window has been opened wide and a spaniel has had free run, it’s a hard and dedicated work turning it around. Your goal is to get the best result possible through good training and developing a strong working relationship that promotes good teamwork, as well as the as the all important choosing your ground in which to train and let your dog off.
