The only stick of wood that might be found on this era of an Imperial (not “Chrysler Imperial), would be an errant toothpick! The models in the mid-‘60s, however, did have genuine wood trim. I also highly doubt that the door panels were covered in leather. I’m sure I’m not the only one that noticed that some of the cars pictured, are Chrysler New Yorkers.

The Continental Mark II was not created to compete against Cadillac, Packard, or Imperial; it was, however, meant to compete against Rolls Royce, Bentley, at least not in the beginning, but in its final year, Cadillac had the Eldorado Brougham for sale which was also handcrafted and similarly priced.

Ford decided to cut costs and the interior is far inferior to the Mark III which had real walnut inlays in the dash and doors, brake monitoring lights, more gauges and just a higher quality leather interior. The plastic dash really sucked.

My folks had a '57 Dodge Coronet wagon. It was seemingly good until the tranny quit. Required a rebuilt tranny to get going again. The dealer pulled a fast one with a used car. Perhaps 1 mg of magnesium citrate in the salesman's coffee would have gotten his attention. He would be changing clothes and underwear before long. Lonely incident. Hopefully no one else had that tranny issue

I don't understand why the "AI narrator" kept calling the Continental Mark II a Lincoln. It is a well-known fact that the Ford Motor Company NEVER labeled the car a Lincoln. Also, FM radios were not available in the automotive industry in 1956. The FM radio would not become available to the automotive industry until the early 1960s. AI also repeatedly miss-identified the name Mark II, and such luxury appointments and features by calling them "innovations".

I knew some upper class people in my small town of DeQuincy, LA who had one of these, a white one with red interior if I remember right. I was just around 6 years old, but was already a car fan. I'm 72 today (born in '52) and started school in 1958, to give you a perspective. That couple is long gone, but their daughter is my age. I just faintly remember the car and remember being stunned by how modern and classy it looked for the time. Truly a symbol of prestige in those days.

Enjoyed! Very beautiful but deadly! Those Crack issues terrify me. It's like driving an egg shell! There is no tubular frame! It's like a fish skeleton! The only steel is the spine down the propeller tunnel. Not even a roll cage! The styling I s good: the engine is good but no protection for the driver or passenger. You go over a.pot hole: Crack! You've got to get it to a boat builder quick! It is a.high maintenance vehicle and certainly not very practicle.

I think i would almost rather have an Lotus than a Jaguar xke. I did just learn that apparantly I was wrong that a elite has a tubular frame. I found out that it in fact is monocoque with very few chassis componants being made from steel. There is a flat decked model that i keep confusing with europa. So what model is the elon? Is that a later more wdge shaped mofel? I used to be up on all the models, or so i thought. I admire the Coventry Climax engine. Thank you gentlemen! Im not in the market, merely educating myself on Coventry Climax and learning about chasis and body clnstruction of this most delicate racecar.

0:10 The video starts off erroneously suggesting that the 2nd Generation Continental was designed to compete with Cadillac or the Packard Carribean in its day. However, that was never the case at least not in price that's for sure. It was designed instead to compete with customers more interested in expensive luxury imports and specifically targeted to consumers who wanted to buy American instead of foreign. The car though failed miserably in that area or it's likely Ford would have not retired the model in just 2 production years. The profit margin factoring in the cost each year to manufacture (hand build) it was just way too enormous. Even the list price of $10,000 was set way too low to recoup the initial financial losses associated with the design of the concept car to the eventual dealer showroom display. The entire design of the car was intended to give it a European appeal which is the reason for the lack of chrome unlike what was found on most lower priced domestic luxury cars in its day. Lincoln could have kept this version and called it something like the Mark II and still introduced the 3rd generation Continental calling it instead the Town car. However, it didn't. Ford wanted a vehicle heavily promoted to compete at around $6000 and that wasn't happening here. Ford was losing a large share of its domestic luxury market and this vehicle was certainly no loss leader to drum in more customers that's for sure. Don't get me wrong I love the car and wish a similar design had carried over to the 3rd Gen model of the Continental which sadly it didn't. If I had a choice of buying this car or instead buying a new home in 1956 my heart would have said buy the Car but my head would have said Nope buy the House instead. The car I probably would still have or at least I'd like to think so.

The 56-57 was a Continental. Not a Lincoln Continental. Ford was determining if the Continental brand could stand on its own. History shows that result. I own two Continental Mark II's. They are NOT Lincolns. They were not made by Lincoln, they were never made by Lincoln, and the word Lincoln does not appear ANYWHERE on the car. Ford had Four Divisions in 1956: Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, and Continental. You don't call a Mercury Marquis a Ford Mercury Marquis...and you do not call the 1956 or 56 Continental a Lincoln, because it is NOT.

While repetitive, I found your production informative. However, you left out one of the most innovative features found in any car of its time. The Sure Track brake system. This system was a precursor to today's antilock brake systems. Found only on the back brakes, the system pumped the brakes automatically under panic stop situations. And was standard on all mark four models for the 1972 model year.
