The Organ Loft
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 ส.ค. 2022
Welcome to "The Organ Loft" in a typical 1930s urban semi!
My name is Andrew Ellis and I'm 68 years old (as of date of writing (05/07/2022)).
I have played the organ on and off for about 55 years but have never progressed very far. The main problem being the difficulty of finding time to practice.
Now, with my own organ, I have no excuse and I am going back to the start and intend to document my progress on this channel. I hope it might encourage others and perhaps some might leave me helpful comments.
I'm starting at a point where I can't even get through a hymn without a mistake. Will I ever be able to get through a toccata or am I too old for that? Stay tuned and see what happens.

78: Adolf Hesse "Lively"
Lively? You think I can play lively? Anyway here is my attempt at Adolf Hesse piece in the book "Festal Music for manuals", simply marked 'Lively'.
It's played on my Johannus Opus 377 organ connected to the Friesach sample set via Hauptwerk.

77: Adagio by John Bennett

This is Adagio from a voluntary by John Bennett. I am playing it on my Johannus Opus 377 organ using Great and Swell 8' and 4' Principals (Diapasons)
76: Joyful Adagio?
มุมมอง 36521 วันที่ผ่านมา
Number 16 in the book "Festal Music for manuals" is an Adagio by Francis Linley (1771 - 1800). The book also has on its cover "Music for Joyful Occasions". Adagio and Joyful and two words you don't really think of together but this piece works well as a majestic, stately piece on a full organ. I have my Opus 377 organ using Hauptwerk and the Friesnach sample set.
75: Lord Of The Rings
มุมมอง 208หลายเดือนก่อน
This is short demonstration of the Salisbury Cathedral organ (via Hauptwerk) gradually building up to full organ plus tubas. I have put together extracts from Howard Shore's music to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I understand that New Line Tunes owns the copyright to this music. I make no money from this video. I am just using extracts to demonstrate the sound of the organ from quiet to very loud
74: Andante - Adolf Hesse
มุมมอง 110หลายเดือนก่อน
My previous video introduced the Festal Music for manuals book and here is number five in that book an Andante by Adolf Hesse. I am playing on my Opus 377 console and, via Hauptwerk, using the Salisbury Cathedral Organ sample set.
73: Voluntary - J Rinck
มุมมอง 106หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the third piece in the book "Festal Music for manuals". An unnamed voluntary by Johann Rinck. I'm playing it on my Opus 377 organ using great and swell foundations and mixtures.
072 Voluntary in B Flat
มุมมอง 1682 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is Voluntary in B Flat by Jonathan Battishill played on my Opus 377 organ.
71: T Mee Pattison Voluntary
มุมมอง 2692 หลายเดือนก่อน
An organ voluntary by Thomas Mee Pattison exploring some of the quieter stops on Salisbury Cathedral organ via Hauptwerk.
70: Cornet Voluntary
มุมมอง 1592 หลายเดือนก่อน
One day I will press record and play a piece with no mistakes but it is NOT this day! Cornet Voluntary by John Travers, using the cornet stop on the Opus 377 organ.
69: Gothic Suite Introduction
มุมมอง 2863 หลายเดือนก่อน
I can't play this very well but I do love playing this on a full organ! It's Boellmann's Introduction - Chorale to his Gothic Suite. I'm using the Salisbury Cathedral sample set on Hauptwerk.
68: Plaint
มุมมอง 4043 หลายเดือนก่อน
A 'Mournful Song' for Good Friday, 'Plaint' by Charles Hutchings. Good practice for playing unusual chords.
67: Rockingham
มุมมอง 1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the well-known hymn tune to "When I survey the wondrous cross". I'm playing it on my Johannus Opus 377 organ via Hauptwerk using the Salisbury Cathedral organ sample set. The final verse uses David Willcox's arrangement.
66: Voluntary in Am
มุมมอง 3593 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my attempt at an allegro piece - Voluntary in A minor (Anonymous) from C H Trevor's old English organ music, book 5. The slow introduction uses only the 8ft Principal on Great and the ensuing Allegro movement uses all the flute stops.
65: Gavotte in A minor
มุมมอง 864 หลายเดือนก่อน
This piece is helpful in practising descending quavers in pairs where the first note of each pair is the second note of the preceding pair. Gavotte by Matthew Camidge. A jolly piece in A minor with a whispering echo to finish in A major.
64: Elegy
มุมมอง 2584 หลายเดือนก่อน
On my Opus 377 organ this week, I am playing 'Elegy' by William Walton.
I think that sounded very lively. Not a piece I know so thank you for sharing it.
Sounds lively to me! Lovely as well. Thanks for sharing, love from Germany!
So awesome!!
❤❤❤
Sounded great, good job !
Beautifully played !
amazing !
Clapped energetically and joyfully and with a smile on my face. 🪅
Lovely little piece. I play a Divertimento (a trio) by Rinck which is in C H Trevor's Organ Book No 2. I hadn't come across other pieces.
Wonderful instrument! Thanks for the "tour". It was quite interesting and helpful.
Hi, we never heard the Tutti of the organ 😅. Thanks
Voluntaries have the effect of me straightening my back with chin up and that encourages a positive and sun shiny day. 🪅
Very nice. Perfect even - to my cloth ears.
You are a very patient man, Andrew! Thank you for continuing to share your journey. I play this one too :)
🐌🧸🪅
My late father played lots of pieces by TMP. As an arrogant youngster I really didn't appreciate these pieces. When he died I inherited a huge box of music much of which I discarded but I did keep the 3 volumes of TMP. Lovely, well crafted pieces that whilst lacking ambition actually work well. The book of concluding voluntaries has been a life saver on many occasions. Thank you for another lovely video.
What a pretty piece! Bravo!
I think it was really a duck quacking...🪅
Ah that record button - I know it well. I press the button and it is like I've never had a lesson in my life! I also think these voluntaries are quite tricky.
Well played! Thank you.
Beautiful piece! Great playing!
Again, a stunning choice for Easter week.🪅 I was graciously allowed to play the Salisbury Organ over 20 years ago, which is a highlight of my life. Enjoyed being in the "birds nest".
Thank you for all the weekly treats. Wonderful. Johnno
What beautiful pictures to back up the great sound, especially that in the last verse.
A delightful piece with a really distinctive harmonic style. Really enjoyed your performance.
Thank you for the consideration of Good Friday. Thoughtful piece at the right time.
Nice little piece, thanks for sharing!
Maravilhoso
Thankyou
Maybe some pulling ang reseating the cable will clear contact issues? I encountered similar problems with our LAN in the early 2000s when the weather was damp... pulling the plugs on 250 PCs got all online again
Thanks for this. It’s very frustrating when something doesn’t work or worse works sometimes and not others. I’ve got an intermittent pedal issue on my instrument (not Johannus) so I share your pain!
Sounded spot on to my cloth ears. How frustrating that your pedals are still not operational - is it a supplier issue?
You always say such nice things. Thank you. Apparently it's a faulty ribbon cable. Sometimes it connects, sometimes it doesn't. It seems it rarely happens and so that cable is not stocked.
I love this Anonymous voluntary and I've played it in the past. Mr Anonymous wrote some very beautiful music!
Biteful
Nice piece from the collection. I hope your pedalboard will be fixed soon?
They're still waiting for the part!
Really enjoyed that. Lovely precise and rhythmical playing. Haven't played that for years
Cut the reverb back
I quite often use this piece for funerals when the coffin comes in.
Yes, I've used it at funerals too.
Not a piece I’ve come across before but it is absolutely lovely. I’m now busy looking for a copy! Also the Johannus sounds very fine in the piece.
And now I have a copy. Found the book on eBay
Beautifully played. Thank you.
I love this little Diapason Movement from the CH Trevor collection. You play it well. Keep it up.
Thank you. You're so encouraging
🪅
I play a lot of manuals only music because I like them. They can be surprisingly tricky. I liked your playing of this one
Great job! You did very well for the video.
I think it was an inspired idea to put two of the interludes together to create an AA BB AA ternary form, and the ornaments and registration changes add further interest to turn two rather slight pieces into something more substantial.
Thank you Jasmin. Glad you liked it and thank you for reminding me what ternary form is.
Well done! You inspired me to learn this but I always make a mistake. It's not easy. I have just started organ lessons aged 62. I have joined the Exeter and district organ association. They are planning a trip to Northampton. I've a notion that is where you are based. if so you might be able to give us some tips and maybe join us.
Thank you for your comment. Don't worry about mistakes. I always make mistakes but I love playing the organ and just enjoy it, mistakes and all. I'm actually based in Stockport.
These interludes bring back memories of first learning the organ ❤
Beautiful Andrew! Thank you for sharing, and I hope you find the cause of the fault on the pedals soon
And the one ornament's placement perked my attention for the happy notes to come. 🪅
Great work sir. Very proficient manual changes too.
