Black Belt Horror. March 2024 book reviews
Omg, you put me into a blue mood after that description! 🙁lol ✌️
Even with my bubbly personality?!
That sounds so interesting! I'll have to add it to my TBR-List für november, since that's the month morbid me likes to read about death and the afterlife. I already have "It Lasts Forever and then It's Gone" by Anne de Marcken and " A Shining" by Jon Fosse on that list and can't wait to get apound to these after I have finished "The Haar."
You have some great books to look forward to. I’ve also got The Haar on my list. Sodergren has come highly recommended to me several times. I am going to look into the other books you’ve mentioned.
This was such a phenomenal book. It's one of a few books that I think about often. The despair was palpable.
I’m glad you liked it too! This book will stick with me for a long time to come, maybe eons…
@@blackbeltreads Three Body Problem trilogy is another one I think about all the time. More existential dread with that one!
@@wickedfair Ahh that is another one on the tbr. I have been so excited to get to the series, I need to make that a priority. Thanks for recommending this to me!
I quit reading Bentley little because of the sexual horror.
Uh Oh sounds like it might be a recurring theme in his books. That is probably my least favorite thing to read so that stinks
Love your reflections. This is my next pick up. They have new editions out with beaut covers. Split over smaller novellas 😊
Thanks! It makes sense, I believe Blackwater was originally published in pieces. It's very long but worth every page imo
Definitely heard good things about 'Blackwater'. Keep meaning to check that out. Also heard good things about his book 'The Amulet', which sounds like it's more along the lines of Twilight Zone or Final Destination.
Oh man, I can’t wait to check out more of his books. Thanks for letting me know about that one.
oh yeah i forgot about this author. i remember someone mentioned his books are great but could not remember his name. yeah a lot of his books dont have english translations yet so thanks for reminding me
I very much enjoyed Happiness and Blood on the Tracks. I don’t remember liking Flowers of Evil quite as much but it has been years since I read it.
I just finished this book. My overall impression is that it very much felt like a "episode 1" type of book. The last third of the book definitely justified the first 2/3. I definitely want to read the next book.
Same here! I keep hearing that the series gets better and better as it goes on.
Bentley Little can be quite graphic and sexual and also quite odd. In the Town a woman gives birth to a cactus. The Association is about this home owner’s association with outrageous rules like you not being able to work at home or not being able to wear certain clothes and they get worse and worse and if you don’t comply you die. There’s a part in The Resort where guests are forced to participate in games and activities by demonic hotel personnel. Some are interesting while others are misses. Do try to read The Collection which is full of weird short stories.
Thanks for sharing!! I had no idea these type of stories existed. I’m definitely checking all of them out.
Awesome, I’d hoped to shine a light on a less respected area of horror fiction.
I have heard nothing but great things about Hex, not sure why I haven't picked it up yet. I just picked up Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio and We Use To Live Here by Marcus Kliewer. Graveyard Shift is a very short novella. Getting ready to lay down here in a few and start that one. Thanks for sharing! Happy Weekend!
I’ve not read either of those, very interested to hear how they turn out
Still reading The Terror and love it. Finished Goth, it was a really interesting Japanese horror book. And an also reading A Botanical Daughter, which is a Frankenstein re- imagining. It’s very light but effective in making sure the reader is questioning ethics as does Frankenstein.
Oh that sounds great. I’m actually reading Frankenstein for the first time ever and really enjoy the writing. I’m taking it very slowly
@@blackbeltreadsit’s a wonderful book. My question when I read it was always, who is truly the monster? Enjoy!
Guess what. Right. Just added "Hex" to my TBR.
Nice! It’s really great, I wanted to ramble on about it but tried to make it brief
Hex has been on my tbr Forever! I have to pick it up. Making a trip to books a million this weekend and it will be at the top of my list! Thanks and Happy Halloween reading!🧡🖤🧡🎃📚
Hope you enjoy it!
Happiness is on kindle unlimited so I'll check it out.
Awesome, it’s a very quick read. Hope you like it
I read Child of God and Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying back to back. That was one surreal, southern gothic nightmare.
That’s is right up my alley bro. As I Lay Dying is an all time favorite of mine.
I love Japanese fiction. Currently reading Goth by Otsuichi. It’s super creepy.
I haven’t heard of that, I’ll check it out!
I didn’t even realize internet horror was a thing! Very cool. Omg that peeking wife thing sounds crazy!!! Btw you have the perfect voice for scary story telling!
That’s so sweet of you to say! I’m not very confident in my speaking abilities so thank you for the compliment.
@@blackbeltreadsjust pretend you are on the mat. You are good though.

Just imagine the smiling face peeking at you from under the bed. Sweet dreams 😈
I need to get on Night Film. I have it on my Kindle. I subbed to your channel
Thanks for the sub! Gotta wait for a rainy day and dig in
Totally agree with the Space Cowboy moment in Gerald's Game. I first read that book when i was in my early teens, & that moment scared the hell out of me, & it's still nightmare fuel to me now as a fully grown adult.
I just recently read Gerald’s Game and I thought it was great! This moment was at the front of my memory.
Yessss! Novels + comics = happy reader. I loved Come Closer. Adding Floating Dragon which sounds so good. Big fan of Dan Simmons too. Also adding Severed and Black Stars Above. Thanks, great vid :)
Thanks! I’m always happy when someone likes novel and comics both.
Keep going brother, Suneater is epic. It just keeps getting better.
I’ll happily continue with the series. Might pick up more sci-fi around New Years. Thanks for the encouragement!
This could be a good "parts" video, since you said you could do this multiple times. Pepper one of these in to the channel every so often.
Glad you liked it! It was easy to make the list but as I started talking about these moments I felt bad like what is wrong with me
This is great. I'm loving your channel. Though it's not great for my teetering TBR. Every time you do a top ten, it gets ten books longer.
Thank you Zak! You have truly made my day with your comment.
I wondered if Jack Ketchum's the girl next door was gonna feature. That book is a rough read. If it was totally fictitious, i would think that it was a good, grisly horror story, but the fact we knew it's loosely based on a true story hung over me the whole time i was reading it. It certainly made me question humanity, and the depths that some people will go to when they just want to hurt someone. I enjoyed the experience of reading it, but, damn.... its a rough ride. Keep up the good work mate, you deserve more subscribers. Hopefully, your channel will continue to grow!! 😊😊
Thanks for watching! I totally feel you on Girl Next Door, I try to pick different books to mix it up a bit.
Yikes. These are brutal. Ever read Cows by Matthew Stokoe? Not sure anything could ever disturb me more. 🤢
I have intentionally avoided that book cause I’ve heard it’s so gross!
@@blackbeltreads Smart. It's like the author wanted to see how disgusting it could get. There is no redeeming quality to the story. It's vile.
At least with most of these we have great writing/story telling. I’ve read a few books that seem to just go for shock and that doesn’t really work for me either.
That was a heavy one for sure! But thank you nontheheless for mentioning these scenes. It will keep me from stumbling upon these books by accident and then be ruined for the rest of my reading life. Fortunately, I only read one of the books you mention in this video, "Gerald's Game". The Space Cowboy wasn't what really freaked me out, though. But remember the dog (his name was Prince, if I remember correctly). And the whole scene with the total eclipse...baaaah.🤢😵💫
The moment of the eclipse (with her father) is definitely worse now that you mention it. That is one messed up book!
I probably will not pick up most of these (maybe a couple), too brutal. I have become a wimp in my old age. 😆 When I was younger I would read mostly anything , no matter how dark or morbid. Lately I have found myself pulling back from the really horrific books and movies. I still of course read horror, but the extreme is off my list now. I really enjoy Junji Ito though. His work is so bizarre, odd, and horrific, and there is something I am drawn to about his stories. I really enjoy Asian horror though. I find it to be more imaginative and unique. The " I don't know what is wrong with me" made me LOL. I have literally asked myself the same thing over the years for some of my choices in books and movies.😅
I completely agree with you on growing out of the extreme horror. I have become much less interested in that kind of thing as I get older.
'I don't know what's wrong with me' 😂😂🤣🤣 A unique video! I enjoyed it! What's that say about me though 😂✌️📚
Thank you, I’m glad I’m not alone!
@@blackbeltreadstoo many rear naked chokes as a white belt sir? Lol. Great original idea- a joy to find on booktube!
Now that you mention it, I have been hit in the head a lot 😂
❤ you have a lovely voice to listen to about haunted horror novels xx
That’s very kind of you to say, thanks!
@@blackbeltreads you are most welcome xx
Just finished Carrie and Salem's Lot by Stephen King and trying a new to me author Nick Hollin 'Dark Lies'
Nice! Sounds like you gotta read The Shining next
I'm going to re-read a book I read when I was a teenager, Sins of the Flesh by Don Davis & Jay Davis. You should read Frankenstein!
I’m ashamed to say I’ve never read Frankenstein or The Haunting of Hill House. Both are at the top of my list! I will try to squeeze one in this year. Always good to hear from you!
Rosemary’s baby is one of the reasons. I’m glad I am child free thank you very much. My nibblings are enough.
I've been on a sci-fi kick lately, so this horror season I'm jumping into alot of sci-fi horror stuff like re-watching the Alien movies and playing the dead space remake as well as finally reading the the second and third books of the Three body problem trilogy by Liu Cixin, although they're not considered horror, Ive heard that these books have some great cosmic horror stuff in them which I'm such a sucker for!
I love when sci-fi and horror meet. Alien is a perfect example of why that can be so affective.
I want to read Between two fires, i read Those across the river by same author and i LOVED that book! Buelman isn't talked about much and i don't get why he isn't. Im re reading Algernon Blackwood stories, The Willows, The Wendigo, and The Listener, all 3 of his short stories in one book. Also finishing up Drawing Blood by Poppy Brite. Love the video, great picks! 🖤📚
You have some great stuff there! I really do need to read more of Buelmans books seeing as how much I love Between Two Fires
I haven't read "Nothing But Blackened Teeth", but i really enjoyed her VtM novella "Fine Print". I'll try "Nothing But Blackened Teeth" after "The Dead Take the A Train" and "The Salt Grows Heavy" though. :)
I would like to try another of her books, I’ll add these to my list. Thanks!
Recently found out this channel, i quite enjoy it here, cheers! Anyways, started off the month with "Disturb Not the Dream" by Paula Trachtman ... enjoyed it although wasn't that scary as it's tragic and perverse :D Finished the "The Last House on Needless Street" by Catriona Ward and enjoyed that one much more.Taking a break for a day or two now, then i have "The Hellbound Heart" by Barker, "Rosemary's Baby", "Joyride" by Ketchum, "Intensity" by Koontz and a couple more. I rarely read horror, but lately i decided to switch it up a bit, especially for October. Adam Nevill's books are supposed to be very good, but i've yet to read one of them. "Between Two Fires" has me intrigued, and as for a recommendation for something religious maybe check out "The Monk" by Lewis. o /
Thank you! I will check out The Monk. You’ve got some great stuff on your list
Ira Levin is a fantastic writer. Although super short and more of a novella The Stepford Wives is good as well. Rosemary's baby is one of my favorite movies of all time. Curious about Hex, let us know how you liked it. I just picked up a thriller called Red River Road. It is about a girl who goes missing after doing van life. I am obsessed with van life videos (lol) on YT, so it sounded interesting and up my alley. Also, I have The Watchers by A.M Shine, All Hallows by Christopher Golden, The Madness by Dawn Kurtagich, and Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak on my TBR. I also grabbed some Goosebumps classics just for the fun and nostalgia of it. These books were after my time. I was in my late teens and early 20's when they came out, but I still like to read them and watch the show around Halloween. I tried to get We Used To Live Here by Marcus Kliewer from my library but it has been on hold now for a month and still haven't been able to get it. There are a ton of holds on it, most likely because they are making a movie for it? Hopefully I can get ahold of it soon. I DNF'd The September House by Carissa Orlando. It just wasn't what I thought it would be and after about 50 pages I just wasn't interested. I keep hearing how good it is, so maybe I will try again at some point. Have you read it? If so, what did you think? Congrats on 400 subs. Yes, I love horror, keep the horror book vids coming!
I actually do own a copy of The September House! I’ve heard mostly positive recommendations for it but I haven’t read it yet. I feel like I’m pretty critical so who knows maybe I will be let down but I sure do love haunted houses. Unfortunately I feel like I have to read it in September, right? It sounds like you have some great books in your tbr though!
@blackbeltreads Well, i started reading it in September, so yes. 😆. I'll wait until next year to see what you think. 😀👍
I’ve started my reading with The Hound of the Baskervilles, then I’m going to read Salem’s Lot. I’ve never read it, but the movie freaked me out as a kid.
Oh you are in for a treat! Salems Lot is one of Kings best. I kinda wanna watch the new movie that just dropped but I’m afraid it’ll be bad. I loved that old Toby Hooper movie though.
I just read Hound of the Baskervilles about a month ago, it was pretty good, I was surprised. It has some really creepy moments and very atmospheric! Have fun with Salem's Lot, that's a good one too!📚
First horror book I picked up for the season is The Terror by Dan Simmons. After that I might pick up a Joe Hill or a Japanese horror book.
Well you have certainly set the bar high. The Terror is an all time favorite of mine. Hope you enjoy it!
@@blackbeltreadsit’s really wonderful so far. This is the first Dan Simmons book I’ve read and his writing is just beautiful!
I’m so glad you like it. The ending is very strong. Make sure you drink some lemon water so you don’t catch scurvy
Turning to the Classics this horror season to avoid anything cozy, fluffy, pumpkin spiced or otherwise cutesy. I'll start with "The Fall of the House of Usher" and will read my way through a few short stories by Shirley Jackson, Daphne du Maurier, Algernon Blackwood and others. Currently, I'm in the middle of "We Spread" by Iain Reid.Huuuh. Creepy. Maybe, I'll add the Rotter House to my list. I'm a bit short of haunted houses that really haunt me. Thanks for your recommendations and congrats on the 400 subscibers! :)
I like your taste, I think I’ll add a classic to my Oct list. Maybe Frankenstein or some Poe like yourself.
I discovered your channel through this video. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
Thanks!
Please also read our new horror book as published on our channel. Thanks
Not sure if u can trust a guy who's a coors light fan. Weak beer sir but interesting books.
haha I worked many years for Miller/ Coors.
I told Jack Ketchum once that when I first finished reading "The Girl Next Door" I wanted to find everyone who was involved in the Sylvia Likens murder and end them. You may want to try his "Offseason" and "Peaceable Kingdom". I still want to reread both "Coldheart Canyon" and "House of Leaves" as I remember enjoying both of them quite a bit.
That’s awesome! I have both of those Ketchum books on my list and really need to pick up a copy soon
I had to DNF The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires - not because it was bad by any stretch (I REALLY want to try to go back and finish it), but there's a certain scene right before a time skip that made me SO ANGRY that I stopped caring about the vampire and just wanted one specific character to die a slow, agonizing death, and I couldn't get past that. I've also been meaning to check out Cassandra Khaw so I'm really happy to see her on your list. Definitely going to be checking out your recommendations!
O no! That’s ok there are some awful people in the book that we are supposed to hate, especially the husband.
You have a nice voice to listen to.
Thank you!
@@blackbeltreads you’re welcome
Nobody does dark quite like Cormac McCarthy.
I had only ever read The Road. A couple years back I decided to read all his books in publishing order and it’s been an amazing journey.
@@blackbeltreads The Road was my first as well. Since then, I have read No Country for Old Men (Anton 😳), and most recently, Blood Meridian which was soooo bleak! I'll definitely read more of his books in the future.
i have yet to read McCarthy. The Road and All the pretty horses are ones id be most interested in checking out from him.
Those are both great places to start with McCarthy. The road if you want dark, haunting atmosphere. ATPH if you want beautiful landscape, horses and a stoic protagonist. Can’t go wrong
