I haven't read "Nothing But Blackened Teeth", but i really enjoyed her VtM novella "Fine Print". I'll try "Nothing But Blackened Teeth" after "The Dead Take the A Train" and "The Salt Grows Heavy" though. :)
A great list! Peter Straub's earlier supernatural novels really impressed me -: Julia If You Could See Me Now Ghost Story Floating Dragon & my personal favorite -: Shadowland - which combines magic & horror to memorable effect. He also combined with Stephen King to write a peach of a horror/fantasy novel called The Talisman. Later in his career, Straub wrote two ghostly novels -: Lost Boy Lost Girl, & it's sequel, In the Night Room - I haven't read them as yet, but they seem to be highly regarded.
Some good stuff. Read The Fisherman and Penpal this year. I will pick up Nothing But Blackened Teeth, just found it on Everand. I’d add Hex (witches) and Heart-Shaped Box (ghosts).
I love comics. I have a collection of bronze age horror, mostly from DC. I am obsessed with them and have been collecting them for quite a few years. I do enjoy Junji Ito graphic novels, too. Something about his bizarre stories I just love. Yes, my horror reading started with Stephen King. When I was in junior high my Mom had a bookcase in our upstairs hallway and she kept all her books on it. She had several books by Stephen King, VC Andrews, Ira Levin, James Herbert, etc,. I use to take them and read them in my room, she didn't care. Crazy how our parents back then didn't care we were reading books like this (at least mine didn't). 😆 I am especially horrified to recall reading VC Andrews at age 12. LOL I think most of it went over my head though. Come Closer was good, I enjoyed it. Dan Simmons and Hendrix are on my list. Not sure why I haven't read Grady Hendrix yet either? My friend just read all his books this summer and gave me a lowdown on which ones she liked the best to least. I will be checking him out soon. TFS!
Hey, that’s so funny I also read King at a very young age. I’m a bit conflicted actually because my son is 11 and wants to read King since he sees me with all his books. Should I just give him IT and say “good luck kid”😳😂
@blackbeltreads Um, no. 🤣 Honestly, though, i think it depends on their personality, maturity level, and other factors. I can't say really one way or another. That's entirely up to you. I mean, I'm Gen X, so we definitely got thrown to the wolves. LOL! 😆 It was a different time then. I read Carrie, Cycle Of The Werewolf, Night Shift, etc, when I was like 12-14 years old. I did attempt Needful Things, but the 800 pages were daunting. I ended up reading about 250 pages and then abandoned it. Maybe let him read a short story collection? Cycle Of The Werewolf is an awesome starting point. It's only about 150 pages, I believe. I'm sure whatever you do, you'll make the right decision.

I had to DNF The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires - not because it was bad by any stretch (I REALLY want to try to go back and finish it), but there's a certain scene right before a time skip that made me SO ANGRY that I stopped caring about the vampire and just wanted one specific character to die a slow, agonizing death, and I couldn't get past that. I've also been meaning to check out Cassandra Khaw so I'm really happy to see her on your list. Definitely going to be checking out your recommendations!
Just this morning, before watching this video, I was pondering about whether to order "Nothing But Blackened Teeth". I tried to wait until next month, though. But now I take your video as a sign that I need to get this book right here and now.
I really liked it though it is very short and left me wanting more. For such a short book I would recommend finding a deep discount if possible. I try to always be vigilant about waiting for deals.
@@blackbeltreads Generally, I buy most of my books second hand. But this one I was more than willing to pay the full amount of money for. I'm a very slow reader, 120 pages can take me up to three days, so the money is well spent. Also, I ordered the paperback edition, which has an especially creepy and, at the same time, beautiful cover.
I loved Carrion Comfort and The Fisherman. The Fisherman did have some scenes I struggled to follow but only because I couldn’t quite imagine what he was describing .
i like both novels and graphic novel. although mostly manga but i do like some western graphic novels every now and again. Floating Dragon by Straub is one iv been looking forward to reading so its cool to hear more talk about it as i feel like that book does not get talked about much
@@blackbeltreads some of my personal favorites are ones by Naoki Urasawa like 20th century boys, monster and pluto etc. but i also really love stuff like Fist of the North Star, alice in borderland, spriggan, deadman wonderland and battle angle just to name a few
There are probably more readers of novels AND graphic novels than you think. I'm one, for sure. The problems for me with graphic novels is that 1) They're "Story-LIGHT." They're less like a novel and more like storyboards for a movie. They can never compete with an actual novel bc they just don't have room. Which makes 2) even more important: The ART. Modern comic art sucks. Nobody draws backgrounds anymore. The lines are all angular. Nobody even attempts realistic, perspective anatomy. So, GNs are also "Art-LIGHT." But, every once in awhile I'll run into a title that's good enough at one or the other to convince me to take a chance. I'm sure I'm not alone.
I have been in martial arts since I was a teen, but once I focused solely on Jiujitsu it took about 7 years for my black belt. I was promoted relatively fast through each belt probably due to my previous experience.
Man, people don't like Nothing But Blackened Teeth because it's stupid as hell. Everything feels undercooked and underdeveloped, and the horror, when it does happen, as well as the character's reactions to it, is stupid as hell. To each their own I guess 🤷

Read the first 4 books you mentioned. Liked them all, but Penpal and The Southern book club’s guide both were chefs kiss for me.

When I was a child in the 1970s, we actually did the balloon project that was the catalyst in the book PenPal. It was innocent times then. Great book.

It’s good to read slowly. I try to slow down and focus more when reading a classic or challenging book
