DIY RC Car Tires - 2.2" Silicone Rear Buggy Tires

2.2" Rear Buggy Tires made with 30A platinum cure silicone. Running JConcepts closed cell inserts. Even though silicone rubber feels like it would make a great tire, that was not the case here. These tires performed the worst of anything I've tested on dirt - even worse than carpet tires on dirt. They barely survived use with a 17.5t motor and ripped almost immediately when using a 10.5t motor.

    I had this problem with a Radiomaster TX16S with a Radiomaster Ranger 2.4 module connected to a ELRS RP1 using a Matek CRSF to PWM converter. I was using it with fixed wing aircraft. It would randomly get stuck in full throttle. Failsafe was set to cut. It never lost telemetry, never went in to FS, it just sorta browned out and took off on it's own. I crashed 4 aircraft, 1 almost hit a house going over 120mph! Turns out it was the CRSF to PWM converter that Matek sold since all the aircraft that crashed had this module in it. After some investigation, there was a batch of them that had bad firmware and I happened to have purchased that bad batch. :( The only thing I would try in your case is a different ELRS pwm receiver. It doesn't have to be the ER5C-i like you have there, just find any ELRS pwm receiver with at least 2 PWM channels. Try the BetaFPV 5-channel receiver. You don't have to use a surface radio with an rc car. I use a 9 channel pwm rc airplane receiver in my crawler with the MT12 no problem.

    I'm curious if you did a range check and actually tested if a TX loss would still cause a runaway. Meaning stand the vehicle throttle it and shut the transmitter off with the model still going. Do the steer wheels crank one way and throttle stops entirely. If those things are not happening simultaneously then you have it set up wrong.

      @@nick_cncsounds like someone is frustrated with understanding this technology. I have had my fair share of bouts with OpenTX and EdgeTX. It's an open source interface to use with a programable radio. I would consider this a hurdle to work through thus increasing your knowledge and perhaps educating others what you did to fix the issue. The reason the system is so inexpensive is because it does many things not just 3 things. The open source community is mostly about working together to overcome a community project so that we all benefit not just a corporation. So go buy a Sanwa or a Futaba or Spektrum. Tell me how much you want for that POS and I will gladly put it into my daughter's hands.

    It might be too late to help the current iteration, but Traxxas does make 0deg Bandit arms, TRA9430, along with 1deg and 2deg options for tuning the Drag Slash. Bandit lengths, just made extra heavy duty.

    • @nick_cnc
      @nick_cnc หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Yup somebody else already pointed that out and I didn't know that! But since I'm also already printing rear arm mounts to raise the pivot height, it's easy enough to take out the toe-in as well. I'd have probably bought the arms if I knew before, but my custom parts work well enough, too. I do worry fitment with the rear HD arms might be an issue - it is on the front. The HD arms require a longer outer hinge pin so the STRC captured pins don't quite work without grinding off some material. Not a big deal, but an annoyance anyway.

Take a look at all the comments - notice how many of them, despite seeing what I've posted in the video - still want to tell me it's my fault or I'm doing something wrong. This includes devs on the main open source projects this radio is based on. If you buy a Radiomaster MT12, have a problem with it, and try to get help with that problem, this is the treatment you will get. You will be told you're doing something wrong, and no amount of proof on your end will ever convince them there is an issue other than your own stupidity. In short, if you have a problem, you will not receive support because they will refuse to believe there is a problem.

    All cheap radios are using chips with dedicated programming that's been constant for decades. Nothing new, nothing changes. And you're comparing it to an OPEN SOURCE project? In fact to TWO projects. OK then. I've also read the threads, so I don't doubt you've had issues. But I doubt you understand the first thing about this or other radios - that much was clear on the RCTech thread. Lastly, if anyone actually goes to check on Github, you can see that the drop-out issue is reported in May and closed as fixed in June - both 2023 - based on a report from May 12..

    • @nick_cnc
      @nick_cnc หลายเดือนก่อน

      The idea that it's TWO open source projects and doing new things so it MUST be better is flawed. Trying new things doesn't count for much when they ignore proven solutions and end up with an even worse radio than something that can be bought for $30. Check my other video on the MT12 - I show ON SCREEN that I'm using FW's that have the fix you mention and my fail safes are set correctly. I still get a full throttle runaway. But by all means, keep your head in the sand.

      @nick_cnc Not at all, I use it for WRCCA crawlers. I read there were issues with CH2, so I used CH3 for throttle after I blew an esc. Not had a problem since. Also CH5 on a 5 channel receiver doesn't act as a regular channel for some reason, so I had to connect it to WiFi and remap Ch5 as Ch6, and it worked fine. The Ch2 issue is apparently due to CH2 receiving a lot of high speed data that can mess with some esc's and servos. I was told it's a rare issue, but I'm not so sure on that.

    • @CharlieHurst
      @CharlieHurst หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alanhelps6789that’s because channel 5 on ELRS is reserved for the “Arm” command. Which is a drone control legacy thing. One thing I wish it had out of the box is just a higher level interface. There’s so much it can do but so complicated to adjust compared to an NB4+. I still like this radio, but it needs so much knowledge and attention to detail in the setup, on quite a low level programming interface. Firmware upgrades every few weeks, and so many of them… (You need to update receivers too) This is one of those systems that you need to follow the rule of keeping it on the very latest firmware, to make sure you’re clear of any bugs. ELRS is on version 3.5.3 now. 3.3.x is months old at this point.

    • @alanhelps6789
      @alanhelps6789 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @CharlieHurst I tried the NB4+ after I had troubles with channels 2 and 5. That still needs the receivers updated. Problem with the NB4 is you can't have multiple switches or knobs for the same mix. If you try and use another switch to do the same thing, but in different increments , it says you're already using a switch for that application,and changes It to the new one opted. It needs 3 channels to mix two. To run two motors smoothly, it needs Ch2 as master, but you need both esc's in CH3 and CH4 to run in sync. If you plug one in CH2 and one in a slave channel, they run out of sync. After I read the work arounds on the channels for the MT12, I went back to it and sold the NB4+

It is open source. And to clear radiomaster are not developer, they support and use, elrs developer should to know.

      @andreygolikov7583 brought this up months ago on the GitHub. Nothing happened. Honestly I blame RadioMaster more than anything. They're a for-profit business selling radios with severe bugs and as far as I can tell, offer absolutely no contributions to the open source projects they're based on. RadioMaster should be the ones doing QA and testing before seeming a product.

    Could it be a malfunction in the transmitter throttle? Ie it’s sticking in full throttle?

    It sounded like you lost telemetry / connection between transmitter and receiver. There are 2 possibilities, 1 transmitter lost connection, 2 receiver lost connection. What’s strange is either way, the receiver should have a failsafe mode that puts throttle at 1500 center / off. You can test this by having the car blocked up and go full throttle while removing the transmitter battery. If you get throttle runaway then your receiver failsafe is not correctly set up. Now as for the signal loss there is a question of what receiver are you using? Sorry I didn’t read all posts. Some receivers require RF Frequency Fine Tuning. See if that is available on your internal RF settings.

    You may have watched this before, but maybe it might help, around the 9:55 mark he mentions the failsafe settings, th-cam.com/video/OA7FozAr2S8/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared < I understand your frustration in that you were ignored on github, but some of the people who've commented in this chat are genuinely trying to get to the bottom of this problem and help. It may well be a hardware fault, but if it were me, I'd explore every avenue before I sent stuff back asking for a refund. Good luck Nick...

      Ha, your people skills are sadly lacking...only trying to help, I'm new to ELRS myself, using it on fixed wing. It's so much cheaper and performance/stability blows everything else away. it's the future. Seems like ELRS isn't for you as there is a learning curve involved. In my short time using the protocol, I swear that 99.9% of faults are 'finger problems' with the user having a setting wrong. Fortunately, I wasn't too proud to ask for help and post screenshots of my setups, you obviously are for some reason. Anyhow, enjoy the hobby, after all it's your cash, so spend it as you deem fit...

      @sirtrumpington4779 I literally have video proof that I have the "fixed" fw's installed and that my failsafe settings are set correctly and you're still trying to blame it on me? You get that you're basically calling me stupid, right? And then you have the nerve to tone police me? GTFO with that.

      Sorry buddy, but I was genuinely trying to help. I'm not saying you're an idiot, just that I had a few brain farts at first thinking I was doing everything by the book. And regarding your 'tone' and 'gtfo' statements...your reply to my first post set the tone, so don't play the martyr here. As I said above, maybe you simply don't have the patience to try and remedy the problem...anyhow, I'm done here, you seem to be fairly stubborn about you can't have a setting wrong or memic type problem with your hardware...no harm no foul, on my part the intention was purely honourable in trying to help somehow...👍

    I ended up selling mine too. Used it several times and had the exact same signal drops. I wanted to love it, but couldn't. I used it indoors (at Richfield) and had signal loss even at those close ranges. Another thing I hated was that once powered up it would sometimes take forever to link , even though it was already bound. Their air radios seem great though!

    *1.* Do you have 3-gear and 4-gear options for low/high inertia (basically allowing the motor to turn same direction or counter direction to the wheels)? *2.* Have you considered a rear motor but with the battery placed where the speed controller is, the speed control between shock towers? The idea is to get the CG the same as a mid-engine, but have more inertial mass on the back to assist rotation since car handling (simplified) is based on rotating about the NON steering axle, and having leverage on both sides of said axle will improve it. *3.* Have you ever heard of a De-Dion axle? If not, look into it. It's a sort of in-between of solid axle and IRS and I think it could both drastically simplify rear suspension geometry tuning and even give you a bunch of rear grip, particularly if paired with a Satchell Link and if you have static camber and toe shimming built into the axle. Even crazier would be adding a camber link and lower hub pivot to facilitate that. Just be sure that if it's a plain camber link you angle it down toward the chassis so you get the camber gain leaning INTO the turn on BOTH sides during body roll for max grip.

      I have a 3 gear standup and a 3 gear laydown trans design. I've never liked the feel of a 4 gear trans, and I see no point in doing rear motor since the car comes stock with a rear motor setup. Plus I'll never go back to rear motor. I've always found mid motor to drive better in every condition, including low grip. I'm not convinced implementing any kind of new suspension design would be worth the effort. There's much I still have yet to explore with weight distribution and roll centers of the current design. Are there any full size off-road race vehicles that use the design you mentioned?

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nick_cnc No, but there are plenty of full-size that use solid axles and plenty that use IRS. A De-Dion axle is, as described, a middle ground, which I believe to be the best of both worlds. Chassis mounted diff, CV axles going to hubs that are rigidly fixed to each other via a solid tube, then that tub is attached to the chassis via your choice of solid-axle based suspension design, with my preference being the Satchell Link for its combination of simplicity and good handling qualities. It's been used to decent effect in road cars, and the reason I stan it so much is that F1 drivers in the transition era (between the no aero and ground effect period) reported that De-Dion gave better confidence and feedback while driving, and as far as the engineers were concerned, the lap times between it and IRS were the same. The reason they went with IRS was packaging with underbody aero, but that's not really a factor with RC offroad. *As for the rear motor...* fair enough I suppose, but I still hold that a rear motor setup with the same overall weight distribution as a mid-motor setup will potentially turn faster once it starts turning and have better rear grip both laterally and for acceleration. It might be slower transiently, but I think that can be fixed with driver skill, which you surely have if you're getting into the A mains. However, If I'm wrong, I have an even more fun idea; *Front engine with a belt drive.* Your choice of high inertia (motor same direction as wheels) or low inertia (motor counters the wheels), or you can try both. At that point, it might very well require the high inertia setup for more squat to plant the rear on accel due to the static weight distribution change. And *I HAVE seen an actual 1/10 buggy with a setup like this,* so that's a plus since you mentioned you care about proven ideas.
