Synology NAS First Look + Memory Upgrade: Prepping for HDHomeRun Integration!
In this video, I’m unboxing my new Synology NAS, installing drives, adding a memory upgrade, and walking you through the initial setup process. If you’re curious about setting up your own NAS for file or media storage, this video gives you a good idea of what to expect when setting up the hardware.
In my next video, I’ll be integrating the NAS with an HDHomeRun and installing Plex for live TV viewing and recording.

I need to do this!
Is there a way to integrate TH-cam TV into PLEX?
I’m not aware of one, but I’m not 100% sure. Why would you want to do this versus using the TH-cam TV app?
Thank you for your response, I would like to have 1 interface that can do everything so i don't have to go between apps. Having the TH-cam TV integrated into the Plex Channel guide achieves best of all worlds. I am starting the cut the cable process, its overwhelming to say the least. Thanks again
so it just barely works which is not good.
Keep in mind my test was with PETG that had been soaked in water. Pretty extreme compared to filament that’s been exposed to just air. They also recently released a new version that incorporates air flow into the dryer. I haven’t tried it out, but it looks interesting.
Nice video but I like soldering my connectors. Have it down to a science. To me it’s an art. I take my time and enjoy it. The end result is beautiful.
These should be standard on every printer, imho. Integrated PID control, etc. It only needs a little air flow to move away the evaporated moisture. The new models have a air pump. I modified mine with a small fan..stays blue even in the humid months.😊
I saw they released a new one with an air pump. Pretty cool. I’d be curious to know more about your fan mod if you feel like sharing 😀
Thordson works.
nice
I have the same conduit in my house. I am so happy the builder in 1996 thought of this. I plan on just buying an antenna to put in the attic. The conduit comes down close to where our coax setup (that we only use for one cable router).
Ah nice! I’ve wondered how common it is to put in conduit like this for future use. I’m appreciative that they did this for my house, but also confused why they didn’t put two drops since you can’t run high and low voltage wires in the same conduit. I assume it was put there in case someone wanted to finish the attic. Maybe they only expected romex to be run through it. Shrug.
1- can you re-use those type of connectors?
No, it is permanent once you crimp it. One time I messed up and didn’t push the cable far enough into the connector and I was able to pull the cable out. I tried pushing the two pieces of the connector housing apart and the little tabs inside broke off.
This is a really cool project specially the box for components! Could you please share the link for it?
Sure. I just added it to the description. I’ll paste it here too: amzn.to/3D9jFKd (affiliate link) Just a heads up, this specific box that I have isn’t made from anti-static materials. So you have to be careful with what you put in it. Resistors and caps are fine. This same company makes anti-static variants if you need that.
Is there a way to remove the default Plex live tv streams? Or do you think they are a value-add and I should keep them in if I’m setting this up for an older family member?
What happens if you go to Settings -> Online Media Sources. There are two options here for LiveTV and Movies & Shows. You might need to do that from the plex web app (not sure). I haven't tried this, but it might be what you are looking for. Hard to say if it would be better to turn it off or not. Probably really depends on the family member and their ability to understand the difference. You could always leave it on initially and see if they get confused. Otherwise just shut it off. Maybe ask them if they find it confusing?
Some points: (1) HDHomerun Flex 4K doesn't pick up encrypted ATSC 3.0 channels. (2) Don't bother connecting this tuner to Plex or Emby as neither support Dolby AC4. So, if you are able to watch the video stream on ATSC 3.0 non-encrypted channels you won't hear anything. (3) The HDHomerun app works ok on the iPhone. Unfortunately, there was no HDHomerun app for my Samsung TV. (4) Some of the audio streams for ATSC 1.0 channels sound terrible. As if the sound is coming from a tin can. If your goal is to stream ATSC 1.0 content throughout your house using a Plex or Emby server and you don't care about NextGenTV then this is a good product. However, if you want to experience NextGenTV then something like the Zapperbox would be a better choice. Keep in mind that ATSC 3.0 is a mess. There are currently no 4K channels. The broadcasters want to encrypt the channels and they want everyone to get internet access when watching broadcast tv to get the encryption keys over the internet.
Can it be used for construction purpose?
Nice idea but not ready for prime time.
Brilliant video. Extremely followable and reproducible. Well done 👏🙏
Was looking at amazon reviews saying, "It beeps way too early!" and person saying about "85 percent before its actually there" Well people, its gradual, thats what you should want! Thank you for making this video. Sealed the deal.
Hello, since LSK389 is unavailable where I live, is Toshiba 2SK389 a 1:1 (as of specs)/ good replacement?
I have never heard of the 2SK389 until now. It appears to be discontinued by Toshiba and the LSK389 was explicitly built by Linear Systems to replace it. The specs look pretty similar. It might be worth a shot to try it. Curious that you are able to find this part and not the new one that’s still in production. Using a different part might work, but it’s definitely possible that it could sound different. Try it at your own risk! Good luck!
Woow, didn't know that was possible. I was just looking for info on openSCAD. Would definitely now learn it :D Thanks
How many hours did you do in that one year, thanks
Probably about 15-20 hours
Nice one
This was expertly done with great pacing, excellent segues, and transitions. I'm going straight to your channel to check out your other videos. Awesome job.
Won't the vent cap at the front of the Trans leak like crazy because the fluid level is now well above that vent?
Nope. I replaced the vent with a hose barb that goes to this external expansion tank. The tank cap is vented, so the tank is now “the vent.” Here is the mod video: th-cam.com/video/Fifrha0QrmM/w-d-xo.html
Jumpers for Testing finished product?
Correction: Synology does list compatible RAM modules! Currently they only support a single 1st party module (D4NESO-2666-4G). So it looks like I technically am in unsupported territory by having a 3rd party ram module installed. Here is the the link to the ram compatibility page: www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility?search_by=products&model=DS224%2B&category=rams Thanks to @aderptcain for pointing this out!
The drives and RAM are not compatible or supported be synology support, so if you have issues they will not help you
Not sure if this is a statement or a question. The seagate ironwolf drives that I used are listed by synology as being compatible with the DS224+. As far as I know they don’t publish compatible 3rd party ram, so I bought a 4GB module made by crucial that several people on Reddit has said was detected properly by the synology. By adding 4GB of ram to give me a total of 6 GB of ram, I’m operating within the stated maximum for the chip that’s in the DS224+. So all that being said, I think synology would consider my setup as being supported.
@@MostlyBuilds They may be thinking of higher end DS and RS devices, which have little-to-no 3rd party drives listed as they want you buying their Synology branded drives. That being said, Synology do list RAM modules in their compatibility list, and the only RAM module listed for the DS224+ is the Synology D4NESO-2666-4G. All this being said, I've supported a bunch of Synology devices and I've never run into issues where I've needed tech support for a Synology device, they really just work.
Ah I stand corrected. I guess I am in unsupported territory with my ram module. I guess I could always buy a synology module if I ever suspected my ram (it was super cheap). I updated the video description and pinned a comment with this info. Thanks @aderptcain
I have one, great idea, worked intermittently and I cut my losses.
What didn’t work about it? Mine works flawlessly now that I use it though plex and not the HDHomerun app.
Great video. I am purchasing a house and want to change the keys on all of the locks (that use the same key) to match a new key. I understand the process of repinning, thanks to your great video. However, all of the kits I see online like the one you use in this video, do not come with a key.. Do I just go to a key cutting center and have them cut a random key for me to match? I know I am just missing something simple here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
If you go to a locksmith they should be able to cut a key with random key cuts, or you could probably specify exactly what you want. Alternatively, you can buy a lock with the same keyway as your locks (Schlage, kwikset, etc) and they usually come with 2 keys that share the same “random” key cut. I’ve seen cut keys for sale online (Amazon, eBay, other sites), but personally I’d stay away from that since the person shipping it will know the address that the keys are for if you ship them to your house + your name. Sure a locksmith will also know what they cut for you, but they won’t know your name or address if you pay cash 😀 There may be other options as well. I’m no expert, I’m just a nerd with an awesome rekey kit. Congrats on the new house! Hope the rekeying goes well!
Great invention. Found using 3/8 ID tubing worked better in my hands. Recommend placement of a swivel connector between the pulley and wire antenna so the pulley will not get tangled in the line thru the pulley when the antenna wire gets twists in it. Found pulleys on Amazon .
Does the tool work for rg8?
Yep. If you scroll down on the product page for the stripper tool, it tells you the supported cable types. RG-8 is one of them. Links are in the video description.
After watching part one where you tore through three $100+ preamps just to find the values in order to diy your own fully earned my respect and my subscription
Haha thanks! That really means a lot!
Very cool...thanks. I'll give this a go for my 6 meter end-fed install next week.
Best of luck!
@@MostlyBuilds Worked a treat! I didn't use the retrieval loop because it's a no-going-back deal but now that the pulley (and spring) are in the tree its ready for the wire antenna pull.....great stuff!
awesome! Thanks for the update. Love it
I rebuilt my tuff torq years ago and used the 5w50 syn oil and it's been great since then.
Great video sir. I'm ordering from DX in the morning. Thank you.
Will the little wingspan fit any ladder that extends?
Most likely no. There may be some other ladders that it fits, but it relies on the rungs being a very specific shape. I probably wouldn’t risk buying it for another ladder. You can find generic versions that fit a variety of ladders, but are less convenient to attach. That’s all that I’ve come across anyway. Good luck!
Another tip....keep a cover on your boat when not in use....and rinse off upholstery after a day out on the water....ro rinse off sun tan lotion...
I was told NEVER use Spray Nine .....or Bleach on the upholstery as they will make the stitching fail...
Totally. Works wonders on mold and mildew but eats away the stitching in a year or two. A lot of my stitching has rotted away because of this. I cover the boat more often now. I wish I had been better about this in the past. It’s so nice being able to hop in it and go for a cruise without having to do the whole uncover and recover thing!
@MostlyBuilds We just bought our pontoon and I totally get what you mean about the cover. I'm looking for a lift with the roof to keep the boat out of the sun while parked.
@ I’ve considered getting one of those. I’ve been told birds like to camp out underneath and crap on your boat! I don’t have first hand experience with that though. There is no winning!!! Congrats on the new boat!
@MostlyBuilds Never thought about the thought you just brought up! Thanks for the response...and the kind wishes ! All the Best to you as well!!
This series is one of the best and most detailed on the K46, and the engineering/assembly is awesome as well. Thank you for making it! If there is ever a reason for you pull the trans again, creating a "how to pull trans" from the mower video would really useful. There aren't any good videos out there on how to safely remove the trans for a rebuild. While the trans is used in lots of mowers and brands, the hookup points are likely very similar.
Thanks! Great suggestion on a trans removal video. I’ll def keep that in mind.
Please make a DIY version of this cloudlifter, if possible. 😅

my cloudlifter is working with 48v off. It seems like an error to me, short circuit. On the "TASCAM" board it works with 48v off. On the ZOOM L-8 board it does not work. I found it very strange.
That sounds pretty fishy. Have you put a multimeter on the output of your Tascam interface? I’d bet it’s always putting out 48v.
I’ve had one for 5 years. I’m a contractor and this has been great for alot of projects where access is tough. I bought it because the rental company had none and I had no choice and figured it would be worth it just to get that project done. I’ve got two of them now. Hard to find parts for though
I’m curious what kind of parts are difficult to find for it?
Superb
