Follow me on my journey to learn open canoe white water, also lots of camping trips on flat water along the way!
Biggest day yet!
Started at 1.5 feet over D bridge. Ran the upper and the lower with a massive crew.

Definitely take a lesson.
No thank you. Take a look at my more recent videos I have made some progress. I paddle with a few open boaters with decades of experience they have taken me under their wings. Also I have taken classes here in Missouri but intermediate to advanced open boat classes aren’t a thing in the area. feel free to meet me on the saint and show me how it’s done!
Your paddling is very good. I don't see much edge control though when side surfing or peeling out, is that harder to do in a canoe? Surprised you didn't flip a few times when the water pooled over your upstream edge. Great video and very instructive otherwise. This is not a critique just a curiosity thing.
I had zero edge control in this video! The probe is a pretty forgiven boat. I’m still learning edge control. I have a better handle on it but still trying to master! The water was low as well so not much current. At higher levels it probably would have flipped me. Thanks for watching!
Awesome trip. 19 minutes in is exactly the type of trip I am planning for next early fall. Doing the Current River in two weeks. Paddle to camp and spend a day near each camp just exploring. Thanks for sharing. Who knows, maybe we'll paddle a stretch together.
Sounds like a great trip! I have started to go slower and slower on the river. Even just camping on a gravel bar and staying put for a couple days. What do you paddle? I will keep an eye out for ya!
You're so quiet - am i the only one that talks to the boat when going over rapids? 😂 Fun video!
I’m to busy trying to stay in my boat to be talking lol. I usually just scream a lot when I think I’m about to die!
@@paddlingjourney1450 🤣 Gotta say though it looks like a lot of fun out there. Not sure i'll make it to the Saint this season but it's on my list. I should probably spend a little more time in the pool this fall with MWA in st louis...
Looks like an awesome river and i like your paddling style:) When do you think it'll be in next? Is it only runnable after a large rain until winter/spring?
Thank you! I didn’t know I had any style! lol the river only runs after heavy rains. Even in spring and winter there are only a handful of days it’s runnable. It’s gem in the middle of Missouri though.
Yeehaw!
Awesome. Where is this?
Saint Francis river in Missouri.
Awesome run buddy. Saw you at the put-in, but didn't have a chance to talk to you. I took off at Millstream because I didn't feel confident below that, but you killed it! Great video.
Great day today, go big or go home! The bar has been raised. Also the fastest turnaround on a video ever!
I was excited to see the footage! Can’t wait for more big water days!
killer.
Where is The Saint? Is there a specific name for this section?
Saint Francis river It’s in Missouri about 1.5 hours south of St. Louis. The white water section is the upper and lower. The upper run adds a few miles but it’s a lot of flat water and only a couple class 2 rapids. A majority of the paddlers will just run laps on the lower section.
More kunuz less Kataks😂
Nice try at Double Drop. The ol around the rock move has kept many a boat! Keep trying the hard lines!
I got it the second time! Went back for redemption lol
Those guys were good.
Is that an Ocoee?
Dagger Encore
@@paddlingjourney1450 love seeing the classics out there
Same, every once in a while we get out of town open boaters and that’s always a treat to see other boats.
@@drosophilamelanogaster4625 Love the classics too! That's a big boy at 13'2"!
@@mflacke going to my Genesis this year, she's 13'6"
What a sweet day it was.
Always a good day out with you!
I have enough trouble keeping my balance using a paddle with a blade on *both* ends.
I started paddling as a flat water kayaker. Switched to canoes and then started white water. I don’t know any better lol
Graceful, powerful moves! Great technique, you make it look easy.
Thanks! Some days are better then others lol
looks like youre getting stronger!
Thanks! I felt super great on the water!
There was a gunnel grabber at 1:12, uh he owes 25 push-ups. Good to see new faces out there! Stay on the paddle my friend
The boat grab is a rooking mistake. It serves no purpose whatsoever. Hope his/her swim was uneventful. The Saint is always a treat any time there is water. I'm planning being there myself this coming weekend.
Nice river. Nice water level. Nice day.
Beautiful indeed!
Man paddling rapids in a canoe is so much harder! New goals. Subscribed.
“Git’n a little rowdy in there” Keep on Creek’n on!
Beautiful tandem paddling. The swim at 4:27 was very relatable and shows how much skill and technique is involved the rest of the time keeping you open side up!
Thank you! Yeah watching the video I just stopped paddling thinking I was done then hit the eddy line unprepared and over I went lol.
I got all confused around the 2:00 mark with the surfing...I thought you were going in circles and was hard to wrap my brain around....then I got it....🤣
Surfs up lol. Thanks for watching!
Did you see many people? And what was the water temperature like?
I might have saw one group the whole trip it was during the week and early in the season. Probably around 50 degrees.
what are some good spots to learn on before advancing to this area?
In Missouri? The Missouri whitewater association does a spring clinic every year to introduce people to whitewater. They do the upper section of the saint(this is the lower) which is easier class 1/2 stuff. There is also big creek which is mostly flat water but has a couple shut ins with class 2 in higher water. We put new people on the lower section as well though just depends how comfortable you are with swimming!
I can't wait to get back to the Current
nioce!
Thanks!
Could you do this or would you in a kayak?
I used to paddle a kayak but open boats have my heart now. You could for sure do this section in a kayak though lots of other people do!
Thanks!! Great video!!
Thanks! It’s an aqua bound edge I believe. I have half a kayak paddle strapped in and wedged between my air bags. Then a clamp at the top with a go pro connection I bought from I can’t remember lol I will look it up.
Great relaxed paddling! What brand is that paddle? Also what is your set up for the back of the boat camera?
See above lol
Killer run dude. What class is that drop at 1:50?
I think it’s just class two. At really big water maybe a 3. Thanks for watching!
I NEED to get back to The Saint! :-)
Where do you float?
Saint Francis river in Missouri is where the white water is but I float all over the Missouri ozarks
I love it. The Saint.
Great video. Good times!
I want to get out there!
Let’s go!
where online do you organize? Do you hike or shuttle? @@paddlingjourney1450
Looks like a perfect OC run. Well done
To kind! It was a great day on the water.
Nice eddy in the middle of Cat’s Paw
Thanks! First time catching it with that much flow!
Looks so fun!!
Thanks
I’ve done a little upstreaming on both the Current and the Jacks myself. We the crazy people. Love your vids.
The crazy ones indeed! At least around Missouri anyway. Thanks! Nice looking boat you got there!
Where on the river did you drop in?
Millstream gardens conservation area. That’s the shorter lower saint run. There is a longer run that starts more upstream lots of flat water I that section and some class 2. A lot of people just run multiple laps on the lower section myself included.
I just found your channel and I know you're on an Old Town, but I'm wondering which one, it looks pretty similar to what I have (Discovery 169). I've been searching for someone doing river trips that's using a canoe like mine, shallow arch, moderate rocker. Love how you are in complete control of it.
It’s a camper! It’s got a pretty flat bottom and the slightest bit of rocker. It’s basically a rec canoe that can do everything but doesn’t excel at anything. It’s my first boat and I love her!
Old Town Camper???
Yes! She was my first canoe.
Nice piece of water! Thank you
Took my Probe 12 for its first run recently, but on the James. Not exactly white water!
Need to get outfitted and bring it to the Saint!
It's completely outfitted...may have to do that sometime! @@paddlingjourney1450
Probe?
Yes!
Good level!
Super fun!
My home river! 🙂
Me too!
