Injection transformer for the Bode plot of Rigol DHO924s
Before testing a bode plot on a switching power supply you need to find an insulation transformer to protect your scope! Check first what you have in hand before buying anything, you may be surprised. Still watch out where you connect you transformer not to be on a high current switching line because it will generate back a high voltage back into your generator. You are supposed to connect ONLY to the low current low voltage feedback loop of the power supply you test.

Triggering level on the Ebay logic probe for the Rigol DHO924s

The Ebay Logic probe does not care about the threshold level set on the LA scope menu. For this you need to use the official Rigol PLA2216 Logic probe extension that has adjustable threshold used by it's Op amps. For the Ebay unit you need to be aware of the fixed threshold voltage and design a voltage divider not to fry the LVDS driver of the probe at about 5.5Volts max.

The Bode analysis take over the operation of the scope during scan and this is normal. However , if you turn off scope while still active, the scope will power on in same state without having access to scope menu unless you press default. Or you can set option to always power on in default state.

First try with a transformer and a simple filter. The transformer is there to protect the function generator. Generator sees a high impedance. The tested circuit sees a low impedance input over a small resistance added in his feedback loop. But here , this is only a simple filter at the output of the transformer. I will modify a switching power supply soon.

To show this, I have put 50ohm termination to get the normal electric noise low. You have to be really close but I replicated the capture spot for all traces and channel 1 and 3 are more sensitive. 1mv/div on 1 and 3 and 200uv/div on 2 and 4 gives same amplitude. it is really hard to have a casing that insulate to very high 2.4Ghz frequency. I tried to see if the DS1054z was also sensitive but ...

Hey there, I am in my first semester of studying electrical engineering and just recently bought a Rigol DHO914s as my first own oscilloscope. I am still a little bit confused about the function generator of the scope, if I want to make a bode plot of a simple circuit, like a RC Low pass filter, will I also need an injection transformer or is that only neccesary for power supplys? Also how much current can the function generator supply? I know it cant provide a lot of current since it is meant for creating signals and not to power stuff, but I havent found any concrete maximum current ratings online and I would like to know that so I can make sure to not overload it
Excellent video, I want to buy my first Oscilloscope, I'm between this Siglent SDS814X and the Rigol DHO914, which one is better? Currently I see them at similar prices, little difference in price.
Have the same dilema. I think that the usb charger in rigol is awesome and I like the small formfaktor. Uncertain how the other features match up.
I don't get one thing. If you put 1khz signal and turn on fft in memory mode the center and hz/div go into megahertz, feels like i lost the scale. Well I'm having troubles in freq domain so possibly that might be the case :)
Merci ! J’attend mon nouveau DHO814 exactement pour cette fonctionnalité là !
I just got lucky, purchased an 804 on amazon and they sent me a 924s... I'm not asking any questions.
Does anyone know if this has been fixed with the latest release ?
Thanks for showing us how to extend the range of the generator.
Hey Steve, great presentation and insights. Please, could you give me some ideias to how build correct the .csv file for Arbitrary waveform? I tried find this information in the user manual without any good conclusion. The manual says something related to .arb files but my scope does not reconize this extension. Just .csv. I tried build this .csv file using the Ultra Station provided by RIGOL but unfortunately does not worked. Thanks for your time.
Best way would be to take my working files from github with the correct format and size and change the 8192 table.
@@stevelevesque939 Thank you!
Dont understand at all ...is a curve tracer conected to xy scopes function? What is the the stuff with a rj45 connection and connected to probes?
The small board is just a USB external sound card so I wouldn't risk shorting my audio on my computer. left and right stereo audio channel needs to be buffered and amplified to be send to the X & Y channel of the scope. The 'art' is to create a visible trace on the scope but how fast you send this trace generate a audio tone with various pitch.
Mouse just plug in via USB???
yes but I have a usb hub shown in other video
Which one is better ?

The RIgol not autoscaling after the Bode plot is a real let down. Keysight EDUX1052g does the autoscale after bode. Is there an option to rescale after the run?

I just got my 924S and so far so good. When you're used to trying to get a Hantek MSO just to trigger reliably, this scope makes me wonder what I've been wasting my time doing for the last few years LOL. Anyway have you tried/managed to upgrade the firmware at all. Mines on 1.02 and there is (according to eevblog) a 1.03. But I can't for the life of me get it to download. I've tried all the suggested links and I just get an XML error. On the official Rigol website, following the support links they only show V1.02. You seem to have to have the direct link to get to the V1.03. And ye I'm logged into my Rigol account. Not too worried because I don't seem to be bothered by any of the reported bugs, but still... Nice video series BTW 🙂
So can we expect some big review of these two models with tests?
Hi Steve, I've read a lot of comments about bugs in the firmware of the DHO800/900 series. Would you still recommend buying this oscilloscope for fairly frequent use to generate bode diagrams and use mostly in linear electronics? If not, do you have any suggestions at a price of less than $1250 CAD? We look forward to hearing from you.
Hi , there is a new firmware that got out on Sept 5 that seems to resolve most of the issue that I have found. however it was removed due a new XY display bug. I expect it to be relaunch in few weeks, I will try it then. To get bode plot you need to go 914s or 924s. To me the bode plot works well in an integrated scope package. Alternative is Siglent sd8xx HD or SDS1104X-E however you need their external pricey function generator and software add-on to make it works. I didn't try it myself but some review says its better.
@@stevelevesque939 Thanks for the information, I'll take a look at this Siglent combination too. In the meantime I saw that there is the KeysightDSOX1204G, 70MHz available from Aliexp... for 1250$CD free shipping and the Bode plot is also integrated in this oscilloscope. It's 5 years old though, probably 8 bits and no touch screen. Is it a better alternative in your opinion?
Rigol all the way!
How about FAN noise in the 924 which have been present in earlyer model?
fan noise if less on the 924s than the old 1054z that I add before. however it is still noticeable but now strangely lower since it is now to a VESA display mount. look my other video
Hi Steven, thanks for the comprehensive series comparing the older DS1000z series vs the DHO900. I had the DHO900 previously and returned it after a while. Too many bugs, odd options and no DOT mode. The DS1000z series is even nowadays quite amazing and very useful. Even though I have a Siglent DSO I will get the DS1000z because of the nice history mode. Do not count on that Rigol will implement on the DHO900. Maybe in 5 or 6 years ;-).... DHO800 & DHO900 series only there for 12bit ADC. The rest is very questionable. Average users will perhaps like convenience like touchscreen, mouse operation etc.... But for a 12bit the Siglent SD800X HD is a way better DSO versus the DHO900 from Rigol. Thanks for your effort here. Kind regards...
Nice video. I'm a beginner, and just got into electronics. I purchased the "DHO 804" model. It would be nice if you could record a beginner tutorial on how to use the scope properly and what should I do with the information I get from it.
se fosse un problema di sovraccarico del sistema Android si potrebbe migliorare , con un algoritmo più efficiente . Purtroppo penso che sia un difetto del front-end analogico e resterà per sempre
Steve, how did you enable the cursors in FFT view? On my DHO804 it doesn't work.
when in the fft mode press cursor button
@@stevelevesque939 Thx. My fault was to choose CH1 instead of MATH1 as source for cursors.
Steve, just increase the memory depth up to 25MPts or more in Wave view and you'll see the dancing there, too. I clearly can see the "smearing" in Wave view.
Why no comparison with Rigol DHO814 which is its more direct competition at its price point?
well I don't have one
same thing if you hack it
Are these changes persistent after reboot?
no not persistent but it is not long to activate
Hi, is it possible to have it output a signal, connect that to a breadboard then also connect a channel to the breadboard to measure the signal. So you can use it as a signal generator and oscilloscope at the same time. E.g I don't need another oscilloscope to monitor the signal?
yes , however the function generator is not a very powerful one. Depending on the loads you may want to buffer it with a gain of one in an op amp.
I recently purchased the DHO924s and found that the RS232 serial decode does not work if I set the probe to x10 and scope to x10. I could not find a decode threshold setting that would make it decode the RS232 data. If I have the scope set to x1 but the probe is still at x10 it is able to decode the RS232 if the decode threshold is about the same as channel 1 trigger level. I think it must be a bug in Rigol's firmware for this scope. My scope has the latest firmware v1.02 released early 2024.
you could try to see where is the logic high and low with an offset triangular waveform Like I have tested with my digital external probe video.
@@stevelevesque939 Seems like its a known bug as it has been discussed on the EEVBlog forum.
Not always You need to isolate generator. But always You will have ground loop, which can make bad measurements on higher frequencies (like 1 MHz or more).
Hello friend, can you clear my doubts, with this compatible probe I can read TTL signals below 1.5v or 1V Thank you for your attention
which is better one?
il dho924s ( 250 mhz ) è migliore del sds814x. Il paragone andrebbe fatto con l' sds824x . Ma anche in questo secondo caso è un poco superiore il dho924s
that’s really cool
I guess filtering 1,2,3 bytes in i2c triggering is okay for the cpu. filtering 4,5 bytes binaries can be a very troublesome task for the cpu. But maybe it's a bug not a cpu thing.
1.30 - 1.32V is the dead trigger voltage zone for this Ebay logic probe. Thanks for sharing! Very useful! And you found a "bug". Hopefully they can fix it. Cheers!
Dumb question - which scope is quieter?
my old 1054Z was noisier than the new DHO900. I bought a better fan and a clicking rotating button for the old 1054z that I didn't have time to install. You hear the fan of those scope but it is not an issue for me. The fridge and the micro wave oven make more noise than my 'kitchen' scope...
Hello. I recently got the same oscilloscope and your videos are very instructive. Rigol recommends using a transformer to match the impedance between the generator output and the circuit to which the signal is sent. However, unless I'm mistaken, the datasheet gives no information on the electrical characteristics of the transformer to be used. I used the output of the generator without a transformer on a 455kHz ceramic rejection filter. Its input impedance is quite high, around 100kohms, and the Bode diagram was produced without any problems. I understand the use of the transformer in the typical switching power supply diagram provided by Rigol, but if a transformer is required to protect the generator output, Rigol should give the electrical characteristics of this output. Is it that fragile, and if so, what is it made of? Unless the electrical characteristics of this output are available, but I haven't found them. Thank you for your videos and best wishes for the future.
You want to protect the generator from high voltage and low impedance. I have tried a few transformer but they where limited in frequency. I have fond a very old 1970 transformer that was sealed and was amazing performer with first resonance at 260Khz with almost flat response up to 25Mhz! There is one now on eBay, search PCI 2012B 501-002. Don't rush to buy it and try instead what you have in hand...
@@stevelevesque939 Hi Steve. Thank you very much for your reply and for the suggested reference for the transformer. I'm not going to rush into buying such a transformer before looking at what I have in my drawers. In my opinion, this transformer is not useful, for example, for measuring the bandwidth of filters based on operational amplifiers with a high or even very high input impedance. As I'm not doing much development work or measurements on switching power supplies at the moment, I probably won't be using this type of transformer in the immediate future. Nevertheless, it would have been nice if Rigol had given us the electrical characteristics of the output stage of the DDS generator built into the oscilloscope. Also, thanks for the video posted yesterday on the use of this transformer and its frequency characteristics. I look forward to following you on TH-cam.

Very interesting! Could you pls. do me a *big* favour and check if SPi Decoding works with your DHO924S *together with the LA* ? I'm asking because I own a DH0924S in conjunction with an original LA Modul from RIGOL but I wasn't successful to use the SPI Decoder by just using the LA's channels alone. Everything works fine as long I feed MOSI, SCLK and CS into the *analog* channels. But If I feed in these Signals into 3 LA Channels and assign them within the SPI Protocol Decoder the Decoder will not show any decoded values as I successful got when i used the Analog Channels (with appropraite Threshold values). The LA Traces show the SPi Signals just fine but the SPI Protocol decoder will ignore the signals from the LA. May you pls. give this a try with your Setup? I'm very curious if this is a FW Bug which I suspect. Thank you very much in advance! BR - Peter from Munich, Germany - ;)
Hallo Peter, das ist ein bekannter Bug. Hoffe auf die nächste FW, aber da kam schon 6 Monate nichts mehr.
@@hansmoser162 I thought that is the idea of the MSO scopes (Mixed Signal Oscilloscope). I think Rigol never claimed that the signal would by synced in the DHOs.
I saw the issue online with SPI. I had build a SPI break out board for capturing SPI on the camera scanner that I have build long time ago but the AI on the camera does not generate a repeatable predictive SPI signal to show on youtube. I didn't do any video on this issue but I just got a siglent SDB3 demo board that would make this easy and now I am just waiting for Rigol to release the new firmware that hopefully address the I2C 5 bytes data triger, the pass fail triger and maybe the SPI capture issue.
@@michaelkaercher Yes, it is supposed to be the Idea of a MSO. But it seems that our Ideas does not match with them of Rigol 😕 The LA part is integrated very poor in this Rigol Scope 😞. Now I switched over to a Saleae Logic probe. Cannot recommend the LA for the Rigol. It is insufficient even for simple tasks.
@@stevelevesque939 Hi Steven Thanks! However as @hansmoder162 already confirmed that the SPI analyser cannot be fed by the LA signals due to a bug/drawback of the current Firmware. So we'll need to be patient until Rigol will fix this issue.. However I switched over to a Saleae Logic Pro because I got sick of this crappy LA Support for this device. And honestly I gave up all hope that Rigol will ever fix it. So get rid of the crappy LA Support of this Scope and I honestly cannot recommend to buy the LA probes for this device. They fail even for the simplest tasks. It's so disappointing 😞

Nice, i've been waiting for the siglent to release that scope and see some reviews against the rigol, there are quite a few things that i didn't like in the new rigol.

It will be useful to mention the firmware version as well.
LA part of DHO900 seems to be... quite bad honestly. Especially considering the price of the probe. Hardware may be solid but UI is buggy and somewhat cumbersome. Support by external software would be amazing (sigrok?) but there is none so far. Please test the decoders. I wasn't impressed when I tried them on analog channels (DHO800) but maybe I did not put enough effort into this.
Merci Steve pour la démo 👍
