Woodturning Ice Cream Scooper Handle
Yes its been awhile. I have so many projects backed up. I got on the lathe and need some practice, so I thought a simple handle would get me back into the right frame of mind. I think its obvious I need to practice some more.

Earth Day Festival Tops for Donation to Childrens Hospital

Had a great day with the NJ Woodturners Club at the Essex County Earth Day Festival. We had been turning tops for sale, at the event and turning onsite for people to see how it is done. Now, if you have seen my previous videos, you know how difficult tops seem to be for me. I took the opportunity to show case my lack of skill to the audience and get fantastic encouragement from everyone there. ...
Sapele Mushroom

I had a request to make a mushroom on the lathe. I grabbed a scrap piece of sapele and got to work. It really is an easy turn. I think the toughest part would be under the bell and carving it out a little. Other then that, its all about proportions. Now that this is completed, I have a request for another one. LOL Song: I Wish - by Mindme Why this song? It was a wish that I create a mushroom. S...

Maple Burl Shallow Hollow and Ack's Give Away
มุมมอง 2062 ปีที่แล้ว
Maple Burl Shallow Hollow are the best words used to describe this project. Like most of my projects lately have been grabbing the next piece of wood on the shelf and seeing what can be made from it. This was no different. A plate seemed too simple. Wide shallow bowl seemed plain. I wanted to showcase the burl, perhaps with a wide rim? Yes, that will be the plan and a shallow depression for the...
Cherry Bowl - on Laguna REVO 1216 wood lathe
มุมมอง 2632 ปีที่แล้ว
For this weeks project I grabbed a piece of wood and set to make something from it. I put my hands on a round wood blank of dried cherry. My first thought was, yeah I haven’t turned a cherry bowl in a while. Of course, now I remember the lid or top of the Mushroom Nutcracker was cherry. Oh well. It’s kind of funny how you could have a whole plan or shape in your head and as you turn the wood di...
Ironbark Burl - on Laguna REVO 1216
มุมมอง 2062 ปีที่แล้ว
This was an unplanned project. I grabbed a piece of wood off the shelf and gave it a go. The 6x6x3 lumber grabbed was an Australian Iran Bark Burl. It felt heavier than the size of wood should feel, so I knew it was going to be strong wood. However, I did not find a lot of information about Iron Bark wood or the burl. The best I could find indicated it was from Australia and it is part of the E...
Woodturning Mushroom Nut Cracker on Laguna REVO 1216 wood lathe

This project was a suggestion from a friend who saw an imagine somewhere. I thought, yeah I could do that. Then I thought some more, that’s actually going to be a challenge. I was determined to make this happen, success or fail. First I needed to find the right wood, at the right size. I ended up with cherry for the base, maple for the top and padauk for the spindle/threaded crusher. The cherry...
Spanish Cedar Cup - on Laguna REVO 1216 wood lathe

This project was a request for a water/wine cup from wood. Although the shape isn’t what I had envisioned, its pretty close and this was more of a proto-type or practice piece. Spanish Cedar, when I first saw it, I thought it was a bit light in color. I thought it would be redder and denser. It was surprisingly light weight for its size. After turning and doing the research (I really need to re...
Bloodwood Zen Pen - on a Laguna REVO 1216 Wood Lathe
มุมมอง 2962 ปีที่แล้ว
Had this project hanging around awhile in the garage and with it still being pretty cold, I thought I should turn something simple. Zen Pen is a pretty simple project. The only thing could go wrong (which has on many occasions) is the wood splits, breaks, chips or you shave it down too low, exposing the brass. I turned a bowl from bloodwood over a year ago and its very dark red and blood lookin...
Tamarind & Padauk Lidded Bowl
มุมมอง 1922 ปีที่แล้ว
This project was conjured in my mind as a wonderful two tone, contrasting colors, lidded bowl. I believe I messed up the Tamarind by putting Tung Oil on it as a finish. Anyway, the idea was two tone lidded bowl. The spalted Tamarind was the blank for the bowl, which started out as a 3x6x6. For the lid, I choose a 6 inch round by 2 inch thick piece of Padauk. The finial was a loeft over piece of...
Olivewood Bottle Opener Handle - on a Laguna REVO 1216 Wood Lathe

This project was quick and easy. I picked up a bottle opener kit awhile back and it was time to get a handle on it. (pun intended LOL) The big question was, what wood to use? Looking over the scrap I found a chunk of olivewood. I remember this wood as being easy to turn, finish and looks great. So away I went. Problem I find with turning handles is finding the right curves the look good and fee...

Thanks so much for the demo of the outboard function! Seriously considering this lathe but the one thing that is still causing me to hesitate is there is no tail-stock support when going outboard. Seems to me the larger the piece you turn the greater the need for tail support, no? So I guess here is my question: Apparently there is a 20" bed extension available for this lathe, just wondering if it would fit on the outboard and therefore allow room for the tailstock to be moved over to that end too?? If so I think I'd be all in with no further hesitations on this lathe. (I could see how nice neat wood like you used wouldn't need tailstock, im just thinking of the larger less 'round' pieces). OH PS if you did read this far (sorry for being long-winded) Absolutely gorgeous bowl!! Why hadn't I thought of that chip-dip bowl turning project haha Great job man!

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you and hmmm.... interesting concern and I see your point. I have two projects (waiting on wood to dry, at least a little bit) that will require outboard turning. One is going to be very heavy and wonky, so it'll be interesting to see how the lathe handles it. As for answering your question, the 20" bed extension seems like a logical choice (which I may actually need for the one project). However, switching the tailstock around to the outboard side, it would be to low below center and would need something to lift it. The precision of alignment to center the tailstock could be an issue too. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you. If you read this far, great question. ;)

It's funny listening to people nit pick little things while I'm using a shop smith knock off lol. His complaints would be my pros lol. I'm getting a new lathe. I just wanted to see if I would like it. So it only cost me 150 instead of paying 1200 to 2k then deciding I didn't want to do it. Plus I can always use it's other features maybe the drill press.

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah sometimes "nit picking" can be silly. However, for some people that one "nit" is just too much of an annoyance that it makes the person looking to buy the product realize they should go with the other machine. I don't know if you've seen my other videos, where I started my channel on a $150 WEN machine, before moving to the Laguna. I did a lot of research to replace the WEN and the nit picking by others helped me make my choice. I almost purchased a JET 1221, glad I didn't. I'm happy with this machine, even with the minor... "nits" LOL. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Very nice video! Unfortunately I can't reference it in our monthly newsletter because at around 9:32 (and several other times) you are shown truing up a face grain blank using a SPINDLE ROUGHING GOUGE. This should never be done, and thus because of these unsafe techniques shown, we can't recommend the video. You may want to re-shoot, or remove the use of the spipndle roughing gouge segments and then re-post the majority of the video.

Hello, I appreciate the feedback. In this video, and many others, the heavy 1 inch bowl gouge looks like a roughing gouge. At 3:24 in this video you should clearly see the profile. I really like the heavy 1 inch Hurricane bowl gouge for roughing. However, about 3 years ago when I first started out, I didn't know any better (what any of the tool names were) and I did use spindle roughing gouge on end grain. You bring up an interesting point, I was the one looking for feedback and instructions on what I was doing wrong... NOW... I can see how others might view my videos as instructional or insight on turning. I will have to go back and remove or as you say reshoot/remake the videos. Thanks for the advice

I have seen my share of images sent to me of broken Spindle Roughing Houges from using them on end grain; it is very clear that the hazard is real. I think the noise was from the blank having moved very slightly so the live center wasn't seated properly in the hole. Sounds like a frustrating situation and if I were faced with the same problem, I might ask neighbors/friends if they know of an electrician that would check out my electrical feed from the main panel to the lathe and if they had a voltage meter to confirm.... for free (if its a friend) or low expense (if recommended). Electricity is one thing I don't mess with, for safety reasons. I don't want to get hurt myself or burn the house down. Good luck and let me know what you find out. Thanks

The acrylic blanks are very soft. I would think the eyes would pull out if you ever had a big fish on. Have you caught anything on it yet? One idea might be to cut a channel in the lure and run a wire from the tip to the end, and then refill it with epoxy.

      Not a bad idea. Thanks

A work around for lock is to lock the index throw to lock the spinndle which will help with chuck changes ..but don't fire the machine while index lock will cook a belt... This Laguna baby lathe looks good to ...... Turn true ....Sawman.....................................................................................

Great video!! Do you remember how thick the wood was you made the bowl out of?

Thank you. I want to say it started at about 2-1/2 inches. It currently stands about 2-1/4 and little over 11-1/4 inches wide

It certainly feels like I quit, but I have turned a little since the last video. Weather is getting warmer and I plan on filming a few projects very soon. If I remember how. LOL

Nice video. I noticed you used OB Shine Juice on one of the stands. I think that is made from linseed oil if I'm correct. If so, I would caution not to use it for this type of project. Linseed oil can carry its smell for some time going forward. Often times cancer patients have enough problems and don't need these additional odors which for some can be offensive. I'm also making some wig stands along with our local club to donate. Thanks, Myles

I think wig stands are a fantastic project and for a good cause. I agree with the linseed oil being amongst the smelly finishing solutions us turners use. I found that the OB Shine Juice (which is diluted with denatured alcohol and shellac) as well as Ack's Abrasive Paste are the best odorless finishes I have used so far. Although I save the Ack's for bowls, plates, etc because its food safe. Ack's would work fine for this project too. My cousin, (who is a cancer survivor) was very happy to receive one of these for her wig, at the time of her ordeal. I'd love to see your work, if you can send me a picture/link. Thank you for the comment.

Just lop a few millimeters off the tool rest base (or banjo) with an angle grinder. How hard can it be? I've got many different and bigger issues with this machine, not the least the lowest spindle speed which is already a ridiculous 750 rpm, and the weak motor and the lack of mechanical speed reduction. The smallest cheapest lathe you can realistically get away with is "the" *Grizzly T25920,* or a version of that generic Chinese export pattern from any other vendor. But you need to make sure you get the _latest low speed version_ with the 300 rpm entry speed because older versions started out at 650 rpm as well.

This lathe treated me well... until it died. I have a much better lathe now. Thanks

I am a beginner too. Have attempted Bowls, saucers, animals, snowmen, cats, vases, candle holders, unique vases from weird pieces of wood, catch all's from burls, witches, and many more things but have never conquered the craft. Good work on your project !!!!! Looks good
