🌿 HOW TO GROW ORCHIDS IN LECA + GLASS: Ultimate Guide to Boost Blooms + Care Questions Answered!
The Ultimate Guide to Growing Thriving Orchids in LECA and Glass: Air, Light, Water, Nutrients and Roots!
Are your orchids struggling in traditional potting mixes? Do you want to witness the magic of healthy roots and vibrant blooms? Welcome to the world of LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) and glass jar orchid cultivation!
In this comprehensive guide, we'll dive deep into the science behind why this innovative method is revolutionizing orchid care. LECA provides superior aeration, drainage, and root visibility, while clear glass jars allow for photosynthesis in the roots - a game-changer for indoor orchid growers.
Why LECA and Glass Jars Are a Perfect Match:
Aeration: LECA's porous structure prevents root rot, a common orchid killer.
Drainage: Excess water drains away easily, keeping roots happy and healthy.
Root Visibility: Easily monitor root health and adjust watering schedules.
Photosynthesis: Clear glass jars allow light to reach the roots, boosting overall plant vigor.
Modern Aesthetic: Create a stylish display showcasing your orchids' unique beauty.
Step-by-Step LECA and Glass Jar Transfer:
Orchid Preparation: Gently remove your orchid from its existing pot, carefully untangling the roots.
Root Cleaning: Rinse away old potting mix and trim any dead or damaged roots.
Soaking (Optional): If your orchid is dehydrated, soak the roots in water for a few minutes.
Jar Selection: Choose a clear glass jar that allows the roots to fit comfortably with some room for growth.
LECA Preparation: Rinse LECA thoroughly to remove dust and ensure proper drainage.
Planting: Place a layer of LECA at the bottom of the jar. Position the orchid so the base of the stem is just above the LECA level. Fill the jar with LECA, gently surrounding the roots.
Watering: Water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom. Allow LECA to dry out slightly between waterings.
Ongoing Orchid Care in LECA and Glass:
Fertilizing: Use a balanced, diluted orchid fertilizer every other week during the growing season.
Light: Provide high, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the roots.
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C) for most Phalaenopsis orchids.
Humidity: Orchids thrive in higher humidity. Consider using a humidifier or placing the jar on a pebble tray with water.
Troubleshooting and Tips:
Root Rot: If you see mushy, brown roots, it's a sign of overwatering. Trim affected roots and adjust your watering schedule.
Algae Growth: If algae appear on the inside of the jar, scrub it with a brush and reduce light exposure.
Repotting: Repot your orchid every 1-2 years as the LECA breaks down or the plant outgrows its container.
Additional Tips for Success:
Varieties: Phalaenopsis orchids are a great choice for beginners due to their adaptability.
Experiment: Observe your orchid's response and adjust care accordingly. Every plant is unique!

I like the yellow ones with a red center. My remaining orchid is in a orchid mix (pine bark etc.) I bought an orchid fertilizer (blue crystals) and dissolve some crystals in water and transfer the light blue water in a spray bottle and spray the orchid roots that are above the orchid mix two to three times a week just to wet them down. That way, only little water trickles down in the pine bark mix. So far the Phalaenopsis is doing fine.

Hi Sir, How about watering if the orchid is attached to the tree? My watering system is 1x in a weeks for 1 h. Also another question what if u could answer, i’d be happy: can i place the orchids on a not fully grown tree? Thank you!

    • @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
      @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN วันที่ผ่านมา

Hi there! On water system, I would increase the days you water from 1 to 4 but reduce the time to ~10 mins. Then see how your orchid responds and adjust time up or down to meet your orchid's needs. on putting an orchid on a not fully grown tree, yes you can add, but make sure you add to a branch or trunk that has a woody texture (not green). 😀🪴

Hello from the Wild West of dry/hot Texas. I rescued a B. Karst from a Big Box store last year and placed her in a Ceramic pot. Brought her in for the winter and she’s been quite happy. Now here’s my quandary, the latest Bougies are being brought in from Mexico. I’ve purchased from 2 separate nurseries and all of the Bougies are coming in with this strange peat moss mix that is stuck to the root ball and when dry it literally pulls apart like dry cotton. It’s horrible stuff, almost like the plugs I’ve removed from some of my exotic indoor plants. I wish I had the exact name of the medium being used. I am literally having to water every day and sometimes twice a day because of this junk. Thankfully I’m not scared to do a full root ball rehab with the soil ratio you listed here. Wish me luck and for any advice on what’s being used, please by all means chime in.

Fun video! Thanks! Two questions: First, percentage of hydrogen peroxide to water? 50/50? 75 water/25 hydrogen peroxide? Second question: I have a baby one from a mother plant that I put in a self watering pot that my son made (3D printed). It has been seriously struggling. Plus, every few weeks (3-4), the pot stinks. I repot (haven't used the worm castings), but a similar mix to yours. It's too wet and breeds bacteria. I want that pot for a friend who's terrible at remembering to water, but now I feel as though I am drowning it! A friend of my son's uses these pots for propagation, so I don't think it's the pot. Ideas?

    • @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
      @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

Hi there. You can use a 50/50 mix, or even a more diluted mix will still work at 70% water and 30% hy peroxide. As to your baby not doing well, the bad smell on soil could be root rot from excessive moisture or if you use fish emulsion products as fertilizer , that too can cause a bad odor. I am not sure of the 3d printed pot design and its water wicking ability ( too much or too little?) . Maybe try changing out the water every month. and consider using a clay pot for your violets . 😀🪴

Thank you for showing a wide variety of gardens, with names for each of the plants!! I will be sure to upload pictures when I finish my garden :)

Wherever you cut one branch, is that going to make two branches come off of it?

Yes! Most times 2 branches, but sometimes less, sometimes more.😀🪴

I like to add background music to cover my pauses ( dead air) and some people have said they like the music vibe, so I thought if I I kept music volume low enough, that it wouln't be an issue for others. Anyways, thanks for feedback Georg😀🪴
