Restomod bike build - vintage Moser frame meets Di2!
Restomod bikes - you take a vintage steel bike frame and fit it out with the latest bike parts - no rules apply so let your imagination run wild!
In this video we take an early `80`s steel lugged Moser frame and set it up with stiffer carbon fork, ahead set and bars - all painted and decaled to match the frame which is the given a generous coat of silver pearl (remember - the wilder the better).
Then time to fit the components - no messing around with a real deal restomod bike, full Shimano d12 10 speed with a compact 50/34 crank and 11/27 at the back - a real climbing settup and all finished off with an epic set of HED 60/40 carbon wheels.
***NOTE - only use ahead stems on threadless forks - threaded forks nead a quill stem or specific quill stem adaptor***
The results speak for themselves - looks smokin` hot, can`t wait to ride it...

Riding the Kent Classic Sportive (nope, its not a vintage bike sportive despite the name...) that goes out of Lingfield Park Racecourse in Autumn, but no black carbon bike for us, hell no, its time to grab the `89 Carrera Team Bike we built up earlier this year. Zeus 2000 vintage bike build part 2 - building it back up!
I did this with a Moser Leader AX frame. Was an awesome bike!
Nice - which colourway and groupset? Dan
Very cool build! Ive got a 1990 MASI I bought new as a frameset in 1990, and have ridden it a lot, eventually sticking with 9 speed Ultegra with a triple. Ive got a near new Canyon Endurace Ive lightened up some, full carbon nice bike. But the MASI is no appliance, the Canyon is. Any downhill especially the MASI is the bike to ride. Even though the MASI is heavier, I dont climb any slower on it at all. Ive fancied a carbon fork on the thing. Its silent going down the road on the older bike,9 speed works really nice with the latest shimano 9 speed brifters I could get new in 2022. Shifts better than the Ultegra ever did. Steel really is a nice ride, especially the quad butted Reynolds tubing the MASI is made of.
Now thats a serious bike - must get my hands on a Masi soon (no suprise it descended better than a Canyon)- what was the tubeset? Dan
@@vintagevelos9517 Reynolds 753 quad butted.......Ive had it at 62 mph drafting a tandem, seemed sketch but the bike wasnt fazed in the least. I can go fast on the Canyon but its a different cornering style for sure.
@@bradsanders6954 Thought it would be 753 - yet to try that myself (plenty of 531) but I only hear good things about it and Masi`s in general - having had a Canyon Ultimate in the past I feel they are NOT confident descenders... Dan
@@vintagevelos9517 I had a 2013 Roubaix, which was considerably worse than even the Canyon descending, a speed wobbling squirrly bike I had a hard time selling. The Canyon Endurace isnt so much squirrly, it just needs to be ridden differently. 32mm tires calm it down quite a bit.....The MASI is calm and quiet no matter how fast it descends. The paint on the MASI still looks brand new.People ask what did the re-paint cost? Its oem paint.
There are all kinds of Shimano parts on eBay and in America, Amazon as well. I bought Dura-Ace 11spd chains from Amazon, all four of them were fake. I also bought two pair of Shimano Ultegra carbon pedals from eBay, the pedals and the yellow cleats are fake as well. I’m no longer buying bike parts from either place. Luckily I found out these parts were fake and did not crash a bike and end up in a hospital, or dead! Love the resto-mod build, keep up the videos.
What suprises me is that both ebay and amazon make no attempt to stop the sale of these fakes - considering the danger, Dan
Great video. If sponsorship is not an issue why not use SRAM wireless which has no cables other than for the mechanical rim brakes ?
Ah, Sram red... Both myself and a buddy of mine have had bikes equiped with Sram red - lack of cables is great - but both of us had issues with chain drop on bumpy road surfaces that could never be fully sorted - no issues with d12 - though, as mentioned, I prefer 10 speed to 11 speed so personal preference also comes into it, Dan
I know what you mean lol
That turned out really nice! How are you keeping tension in the down tube and chain stay Di2 cables to stop them flopping around?
I opened out the bb cable guide a little, popped the wire in then closed it back up, then stripped down an old downtube guide and cut it open underneath then popped the cable in and closed it up a little - all good, nice and taught, Dan
Looks super cool Dan. Look forward to seeing you ride it.
Great build but wish you showed more of the build headaches because there is a lot. I went through some real issues with finding the wright headset and fork combo and I went with campy 11 speed centaur mechanical and it looks amazing.. so enjoy the ride it’s amazing to have electronic and steel together what a difference 👍👍👍🚴🏼♂️🚴🏼♂️🚴🏼♂️
I got lucky with the headset as the fork came with the headset but for sure, there`s always issues with a restomod - you sure you want a video of me swearing a lot... :) Dan
Super video and really beautiful Moser frameset and Dura-Ace Di2.💯👌🏻🚴♂️
Can`t go wrong with a Moser, Dan
Some older forks are 95mm spacing in dropout , and forks are more reluctant to spring than rear end.
Yep, no way would I try and spread front forks - the stuff of nightmares... though at that age I think you`d hit the brake bolt/allen bolt issues as well, Dan
Wow Dan it looks fantastic modern kit is great. But the Steel frame makes that bicycle oh so classy. It looks stunning.
Thanks, that Di2 10 speed is a really classy looking groupset - and I`m a big fan of steel Mosers so hard to go wrong, Dan
I cannot join you on this one. Everything is great, but going electric just makes me want to continue working on Maggie's farm. Electric is just an enormous phaff.
Yep, electric is a faff but Di2 10 speed Dura Ace is a joy to use - I prefer it to all the other 10 and 11 speed electronic groupsets - no real experience of 12 speeds yet. One thing about electric groupo`s is that once set they don`t need adjustment and you will find yourself shifting gear a lot more - though my clear favourite groupset is still 9 speed Campagnolo Record Titanium - just not quite in the restomod definition, Dan
@vintagevelos9517 that's funny. All my group sets are campagnolo, 9speed record titanium on the deRosa. Which is indeed splendid.
I have an old Moser frame. I find it a wee bit sluggish, though incredibly comfortable.
What wheels/tyres did you have on it - I find sluggish steel frames are often heavily infuenced by rims/tyres, Dan
Amazing
Thanks, really happy with how it came out, Dan
Another awesome video! I cannot quite tell, how did you route the wires? Externally, it appears. But, what did you use to stay in place?
Yep, its the external wire option, small cable tie holds the rear derailleur cable to the braised mount, front downtube cable runs through an adapted downtube cable mount I played around with, Dan
Very cool. Now you are giving me more bike project ideas....
Ah, always like a bike project idea... Dan
Kudos on your success with this build. I like the looks except for the black headset. A silver Chris King would have been my choice. I have a Vintage style lugged steel frame being made right now by Bishop Bike a custom frame builder in Baltimore here in the US. He's been at it now for 9 months and I'm still waiting but at least he has started it. Building it with Centaur 10 speed shinny silver aluminum components. I'm excited. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
Think you might be right - its a dura ace threadless headset - Chris King might have looked better, do like the new Campy Centaur groupset - should be a great build, Dan
Excellent video thank you for sharing. I throughly enjoyed it.
Thanks, Dan
I recently fitted a Campag Chorus 12 speed groupset on my Eddy Merckx Arcoboleno, looks and rides beautifully
Nice... Dan
Remember George Hincapie's crash at 2006 Paris-Roubaix? Bontrager/Trek stuff.
Can`t forget that one - though Paris-Roubais is pretty extreme, Dan
Nice restomod! I recently bought a 58cm Mercian 653 Pro lugless, with the intention of buying an unloved modernish superbike, swapping the bits to the Mercian frame, then sell the superbike frame. Then I found out the Mercian actually had 126mm spacing, and I didn't want to try stretching it. So the Mercian is going back to it's original 7 speed Athena, and I've ended up spending a relative fortune on the aging superbike, a carbon TCR with campagnolo record 10 speed, to bring it back to life. Space in the garage is shrinking to nothing.
Hmmm.... spreading that rear triangle is not as bad as it sounds - did you approach a local bike shop to do it for you? Like the idea of picking up a donor bike though - and a TCR is a great bike to end up with by default, Dan
I have spread an '84 King of Mercia frame to 130mm with no issues. They are solid frames.
@@vintagevelos9517 with the Mercian being a 653 frame I thought it might have similar properties to 753, so didn't want to risk stretching it. It's fine with 7 speed, and I've just finished rebuilding my TCR, which stands me at 500 🐙 all in, so it's all good fun.
Have you or would you done a video on how you painted the stem and seatpost, please? I know it seems simple, but...advice would be appreciated.
Will do next time - process was the usual prep, good etch prime, colour, pearl and 2k lacquer, Dan
Looks awesome great job dude.. look forward to seeing your ride review 😊❤ Pete 🚴🏻👍💪
Yep, plan is for a few set-up rides, the winter sportive then hold back for warmer weather before really seeing how it rides on a spirited local route for some comparisons, Dan
Nice. I used a raceface negative 17 degree stem that has the clinch bolt at the front thus removing the bulky clamp. I also fitted weird cinelli neo bars to more suit the modern levers
Just checked out the RaceFace stem - very neat, maybe next time, Dan
Dan nice build, was wondering how you fitted the DI2 battery unit under the seat as My old Madone 10 speed 4.9 DI2 Ultegra unit is quite bulky.
As shown in the video I extended the cable (its just a red/black twin wire under the sheathing) then popped the battery into a small neoprene pouch (extra protection in case of water spray from the wheel) then tucked it tightly between the seat rails and held by a discreet cable tie - really pleased with the result, Dan
I hope you use a quill stem on a bike designed for a quill stem. Also, Ital bikes of this vintage need silver threaded headsets.
Good point - I do point out that the Look forks are threadless and use a different headset and are 1" so the adaptors take it up to 1 and 1/4 but should have pointed out threaded forks nead a quill stem or specicfic quill stem/ahead set adaptor (had one on my US Postal Trek winter bike for years) -will add a note in the comments, Dan
Excellent video Dan . My last bike was a resto mod with an 11 speed mechanical Campagnolo and kept the quit stem . The bike rode so smoothly and looked fantastic . Looking forward to seeing your next video. All the best!
Almost went for Campy 11 speed Mechanical (its a lot lighter for one thing) but I do like 10 speed dura ace di2 (prefer the 10 to 11 as well), Dan
Hi Dan , yet another great video. Thanks
Glad you liked it, Dan
Hello, Dan, I would like your advice. I would like to replace the steel fork for a carbon one on my Monviso. My question is will the 1" carbon fork be stiff enough as the 1" 1/8? Thank you. Danny
If you go for the full carbon fork such as a Look HSC rather than a steel/carbon bonded like Giant or Bianchi you should find it much stiffer - I`ve used 1" full carbon before and they are much stiffer but often look wrong on a steel frame - though guessing the Monviso is ally? Dan
@@vintagevelos9517 Yes, is the same frame the one of the GCN guy builded . Rides very nice, very responsive. My one has full Ultegra 10 s and Dura Ace 24 wheelset painted in mettalic laquer cherry red. 8.0 kg. Thank you for the tip though!

I use Kustom Kanz silver pearl - goes on great, never had an issue - yep, 2k lacquer - the real deal stuff that only lasts for an hour or two once activated, Dan
@@vintagevelos9517 will check that out, thx.

C`mon... next you`ll argue a Mapei Colnago C40 is not vintage... :) Dan
@@vintagevelos9517 not hatin just saying my 1977 bianchi has downshifters...... 😉
@@Historyrevenge777 A;ways love a Bianchi - which model? Dan
It was a matter of principle back in the day to try not to use the "racing ring" in the winter months and see if you could get to spring with it still shiny. A kind of self imposed zone 2 training if you will. I now ride a 1x to commute on and I don't miss the front shifter one bit!
Yep - used to be several months of low intensity inner ring riding - bigger mileage though, Dan
To this day I still prefer low-profile rims in sidewinds (obvs. w. more spokes than the fragile things in this vid). Just feels safer, especially now I'm no longer fast enough to care about aerodynamics and PBs anyway.
Oddly enough these older round profile tube frames and skinny rims feel at home in crosswinds - unlike my more modern "aero" stuff with gets blown around all over the place! Dan
Great effort mate! Well done.
No one likes a trailer queen…ride it like you stole it, give it a good wash when you get home…and repeat.
Vintage bikes are watching all these fads with curiosity, I own an olmo giro in yellow with shimano 7 speed down tube shifters, a guy passed me the other day on an aero bike so I put in an effort and drafted him for about five miles, he didn’t expect me to still be there on my old bike 😂, while looking over his bike from behind I could see it was a 1 by set up🤮 cross chaining nightmare 🤨 while my chain line was straight, came to a nasty little kick up and he was out of the saddle while I remained seated, didn’t seem that set up was doing him and good whatsoever, I’ll add he was about 10 years younger than me and very fit but couldn’t drop me , I’m 56, I suppose these fads will come and go🤷 they got a lot of things right back in the day bike wise.
Nice - many stories like that, keep it up, Dan
