This trip to Florida wasn't even for railfanning and yet I still managed to see some trains. And the ones that I saw were all unique in their own rights. Hence "A Wacky" collection of trains. Saint James: the oldest station building on the LIRR, built in 1873. I grew up with the LIRR and it has definite advantages/drawbacks as a place to railfan: Plus: There are a lot of trains Minus: The trains only fall into a few large classes, so there is a lot of duplication. Plus: Much more than average there are passenger trains. Minus: Even if freight isn't extremely rare, it's unusual. I live near a busy branch and may only see a couple of freight trains every year.
Wow! Had no idea the St James was that old! I feel your pain brother, I live near the Amtrak Hartford Line, and that line is just Amtrak and CTRail shuttles all day long, plus they’re not even as busy as you get. There is some freight, but it’s sparse. When all the trains look the same I focus less on the trains being unique and put a lot of effort into making each shot unique in its surroundings or the setting and experiment with different angles or viewpoints to make each shot interesting even if all the trains are the same. That’s why I moved around all day while in LI, I knew all the trains would look the same. Do you at least get to railfan other places as well?
Sure! -here and there... I was in Alaska at White Pass and Yukon two summers ago, and I go to Maine for the narrow-gauge lines here and there. Back when my son was "Thomas Age", we were in Strasburg maybe once a year: plenty to see there that ISN'T Thomas. I grew up in Western Long Island: back then it was all MU and Electric. seeing a Diesel was a novelty!
@Narrowgaugefilms WP&Y, so jealous, dude, that’s so cool! Yes, Strasburg has some amazing stuff. Im definitely going to visit there once I move to PA. Also, I’m sure we all had a Thomas phase. To be a railfan, it’s kinda obligatory. That’s really great that you got to see the LIRR MU electrics back then, definitely wish I could’ve seen that. It’s crazy how fast the face of railroading can change. Someday we might be saying “Remember when there were GEVOS everywhere? Man, I miss those.”
Fantastic sharing! Super Video!
Welcome to Long Island. I'm glad you got some shots.
Yes, some good shots. I really want to go back. You’ll have to show me around one day!
Can you post a link to your Uncle's layout?
There isn't much coverage on the layout - I don't think he has a (public) schematic. The only thing I can find is this Model Railroader Article about his layout. I remember where each picture was taken, so if you'd like I can figure out a way to compile each picture showing the direction and location to give you a virtual map. www.trains.com/mrr/videos-photos/videos/layouts/layout-visits/mrvp-layout-visit-robert-gross-new-haven-waterbury-line-in-ho-scale/ It is for members only, though, sorry. My pictures are the best I have. (you had to go frame-by-frame didn't you? Yeah sorry about that...)
i see you had some fun watching my local commuter rail😂
Yes.... Fun.... (But yes, I loved every second of it - I love LIRR's paint scheme and its power)
Nice one man, good work! Happy 4th!
I’m confused how I missed Amtrak 145, I be tracking these trains 24/7 😭 Cool video

It is indeed. Haven’t seen it since - definitely want to
Congratulations on graduating! Those bridge shots are amazing, very pretty.
I'm not a huge fan of mashups, but I'm a huge AIC fan. You nailed it with this one, I absolutely love it. Nice job!
lol - nice funny take on everyday railfaning. Love it...
Some of the bridge videos are so beautiful. I learn new things from each video, great info with a mix of humor, nice job, keep it up!
i once found an entire railroad spike just on the ground near some old track. it sounds like common sense but i'd just ever seen one in person before. i was so tempted to take it home.
In the situation you just described, you can absolutely take that home. Especially because it seems like old or disused track. I took two spikes from that crossing that day. You won’t get in any trouble, it’s basically trash to the railroad - if anything you’re cleaning it up for them. What’s the railroad gonna do with a rusty spike? There are three on my windowsill right now.
@@ShortAttentionSpanRailfan dang.... next time i find one! thanks!
Bogus Focus is kind of wild. 😂😂😂
And a real pain in the ass…
@@ShortAttentionSpanRailfan You feel my pain, brother, because no amount of editing is recovering an out of focus video. 😭

what the hell is with all the trains in this video? no one wants to see all that. we want more 2 guys in a boat, more water over rocks and flowers.
Noted.

I also see lots of trash by the tracks I film at.

Cool views from up above!
at 2:20 you may not have noticed it but that is also a rare whiteface D9, great catches!
Oh, damn you’re right! To be noted on the spreadsheet. Btw I clicked on your timestamp and I had to watch 2 15 second ads to get into my own video that I’m not even making money off of yet. I hate YT sometimes.
next braincell should be used to get a tripod XD (not trying to be mean)
You’re not being mean, I know lol. These videos were taken on my old phone which didn’t have stabilization like my current phone, which I’ve had for a while. In the next few videos the clips were taken on my new phone. I’m getting a camcorder soon and the one I’m thinking about has an internal gimbal which automatically stabilizes the videos. I actually prefer to take videos freehand because I feel like it leaves me more open to movement. I’ve tried tripods and I don’t like using them. Alright rant over
@@ShortAttentionSpanRailfan great rant lol makes sense to free hand I personally don’t because I have a boring line (the Rochester subdivision) only three tracks and you can hear and see trains a long time before they get to you so that’s why I use a tripod, I understand where your coming from though. Rant over
@@donutjokersproductions yeah, I live around the Northeast corridor, so all the time I’ll be filming train in one direction only to have one jump scare me from the other direction. The Rochester Sub is a cool line, I’ve only been there on an Amtrak ride through it which is in my Niagara Falls video. That’s way better than my hometown line, the Hartford Line going up CT. About 12-19 trains a day with freight mainly at night and occasionally during the day. I only see consistent freights when I leave the state. I’m so sick of seeing the same passenger trains over and over. But, in the fall I’m moving to Altoona, PA and we all know what’s there. Book over, The End.
I love the commentary and the whole video. You taught me many things I didn't know before
CTrail only has gp40-3hs no 38s
They used to have GP38-2s but they have been retired for over a decade and a half now. They wore the McGinnis scheme and were numbered 253 and 257
I see that mistake on the spreadsheet, thank you for notifying me.
W
use asm transitdocs instead of google maps
Thanks for the tip. This appears to only be Amtrak and Via rail, is that right?
Awesome seeing 642! I actually rode on a train hauled by the Veterans train. Because I couldn't see when boarding at Moynihan, it was such a surprise when leaving!
Thats so cool!! In an upcoming video I have a really similar experience…
Why do you kinda seem like loco?
I take huge inspiration from him, but am trying my hardest to not copy him. He’s actually the reason I started this channel.

But you got permission?? what kind of BS is that
What I think happened was the manager gave me permission but one of the employees saw me and called the cops without talking to the manager.
@@ShortAttentionSpanRailfan hope he gets fired
Stabilization goes crazy (no hate but great catches!)
Soon the videos will be taken on my new phone where there is stabilization. I agree some of the videos can be hard to watch with how shaky they can be.
Next Time ignore Homeless People
Kinda hard not to when they specifically call you out and talk to you. I’m not the kind of guy to just shrug a guy off like that, I might as well hear what he has to say. And if that high five made his day a little better, then I gave him all he needed.
If I’m honest I don’t blame you as although you could help it’s very difficult to check if it’s a scam it’s best to try and get someone to help them.
Good narration over a train video with decent editing is rare to find, but you nailed it. Hopefully your channel gets some more attention, I definitely see some big potential here bro!!
It’s comments like these that keep me going. I’ve been reading this comment all day :)
