The Tongue Tie Truth: What Every New Parent Needs to Know
"In this episode of the Early Momming Podcast, we dive deep into the often misunderstood topic of tongue ties in newborns. Hillary discusses what tongue ties are, how they impact feeding, and why it's crucial to focus on function rather than immediately opting for surgical intervention. She shares her personal experiences, professional insights, and practical advice for parents who suspect their baby may have a tongue tie.
Key Topics Covered:
What is a Tongue Tie? A detailed explanation of tongue ties, including anterior and posterior tongue ties, and how they can affect a baby’s ability to feed.
Common Misconceptions: Addressing outdated views on tongue ties and why some pediatric providers may dismiss them.
Symptoms of Tongue Ties: Identifying the signs of a tongue tie, such as low milk supply, nipple trauma, and reflux symptoms.
The Role of Tension: Understanding how body tension can mimic or mask a tongue tie and the importance of craniosacral fascial therapy (body work) before considering a release.
Function Over Surgery: Why not all tongue ties require surgical intervention and the importance of evaluating a baby’s feeding function before making decisions.
Resources Mentioned:
Craniosacral Fascial Therapy: Find a Gillespie-trained Infant Body Worker Near You - It's essential to book an appointment for your newborn to address tension before considering a tongue tie release.
If you suspect your baby might have a tongue tie, book an appointment with an experienced feeding specialist who can conduct a thorough evaluation.

    What if my baby is cluster feeding every 5-30 minutes for 5-15 minutes, and it goes on all night, and goes on every night, since he was 2 days old? He's now 10 days old. Is it still cluster feeding? Is it normal? My nipples are falling off. He also shits in the same pattern.

    Thank you for this video! Question, why do we have to mix the formula first then add the breast milk? I usually heat up my breast milk then add in the formula all in one bottle. Also , we are switching formulas. From happy baby to kendamil. Is there a way to transition that meanwhile I still combo feed with breast milk? Hope that makes sense.

    Since we pump on both sides when we are at work. Do you need to pump on the opposite breast the baby feeds on weekends? I hope this makes sense I don’t want my supply to lower if I don’t pump on weekends.

    NO THIS IS terrible; babies should sleep in the same room as their parents until at least they're two. In fact, a baby should sleep with their mom for at least a year. What about the dad? Kick him out of bed. Why? A baby sleeping and waking next to you is the greatest experience ever! The smell of a sleeping baby next to your nose has no equivalence. What about your own sleep? What about it, that's your baby; you sacrifice it for their benefit. What about sex? What about it, you can get it done in the living room, dining room, anywhere in the house -- it's actually more exciting!

    My daughter was a preemie, when we first brought her home we'd find her to have stopped breathing and be blue in the face occasionally while sleeping. I didnt sleep for months because I'd be so worried about it. She's fine now at almost 8 months but recently we noticed we are all waking each other up. My husband works late and often doesn't get home until 12 1 or even 2am and my daughter wakes up a couple hours every time. Then im already pregnant again and get up to pee or get water many times throughout the night and she will wake a min then too so I've really wanted to move her into her own room and wasn't quite sure how to go about it. My mom coslept with each of us well into toddlerhood or even school age so she had no tips and my other child is 13 now and he slept through the night 99% of the time from birth and was just such an easy going baby he was cool with any change I ever made but she is more finicky to Deal with lol. Thanks for the tips!! She sleeps in a crib in our room but it's getting too close for us to want to deal with constantly waking each other up and none of us I feel are getting the best rest.

    I will share this with my sister, she is a new foster parent living in France, and she is trying to find the happy medium between the " let them cry it out" French parenting (the babies sleep through the night very early, but at what cost?) and what is online from the American Pediatric recommendations.

    • @Gamer_Mama_0611
      @Gamer_Mama_0611 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aww poor baby. Could you imagine needing food or warmth & being neglected to cry it out? She should look up attachment parenting. She should also look up their brain development because after 10 minutes they suffer psychological distress causing an anxious or avoidance attachment. Sorry I don't usually do this. But if she's fostering a baby, my heart aches thinking of being in the little one's shoes. 🥺

    Once your baby is 3 months old do you still need to stimulate your breast 8 times to protect supply. My baby is currently sleeping almost 10 -11 hours overnight and sometimes only feeding 6 times per day every 2-3 hours during the day) this has been the last few days) and I am concerned that my supply will go down if my breasts are not stimulated for an 11 hour stretch or only 6 times per day. She was previously waking at 4 am and would have about 7 feeds per day. Thank you!

    • @earlymommingpodcast
      @earlymommingpodcast ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always add in a pumping session before you go to bed to protect your milk supply.

  • @Chelsea-f8b
    @Chelsea-f8b ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you this was great! Looking forward to a paced bottle feed video. How long does it take for your breast to fill back up with that on tap milk. I do feel as though my baby is fussy in evenings eight feeds because morning feeds are so easy and she likely gets a lot of milk and then towards the end of the day she has to work harder and doesn’t always seem satisfied or will pop on and off. Any recommendations for this?! Please keep making videos. I find you to be a trustworthy source of information. So thank you!

    • @earlymommingpodcast
      @earlymommingpodcast ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad this was helpful! We have some videos on our IG account with paced bottle feeding examples in case you're looking for that info right now. Otherwise, will work on that video for youtube; coming right up! You're describing cluster feeding...this is normal! But, it's always a good idea to check in with a lactation consultant in real life if you have any concerns. The prolactin hormone (makes milk) is highest around 1-2a and then it's on a downhill slope and then makes it way back up again. There is always milk being made on demand... but this explains why cluster feeding can happen. Hopes this helps!
