A Janeite Sews
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ส.ค. 2020
Hello, dear viewers! Historical sewing, Jane Austen, and Geology, oh, my! My channel is primarily related to historical dress and costuming with a focus on the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries (Jane Austen's lifetime) and occasional forays into earlier and later eras. I am a historical costumer, a geologist/gemologist, an amateur Jane Austen scholar, and a gardener, so my videos often combine these interest as I dive deep into my research and try to synthesize what I've learned. My sewing adventures will be part tutorial, part how-I-did-this, part don't-make-these-mistakes, and I'm sure my four cats will make appearances.
Women's Sporting Fashions 1800-1960 | Museum Exhibit Details of Historical Dress for Outdoor Sports
If you did not get to see this exhibition in person or want to relive it! Sporting Fashion: Outdoor Girls 1800-1960 exhibit hosted by the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati, Ohio. This exhibit is billed as “The first… to explore the evolution of women’s sporting attire in Western fashion over this 160-year period, drawn from the exceptional collections of the FIDM Museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Los Angeles.” I focus more on the nineteenth century outfits, but you’ll get plenty of glimpses of twentieth century pretties! I wore my me-made 1870s tennis dress and hat for the occasion but did not take in my pink tennis racket for safety reasons. Tobogganing, ice skating, picnicking, gardening, promenading, walking, horseback riding, inline skating, bicycling, basketball, calisthenics, tennis, archery, cricket, golf, croquet, and more! Regency, 1820s, 1830s, Victorian, Edwardian. Lots of 1890s, my favorite!

In love !!!
I'd LOVE to see a detailed study on Dame Judy's Lady Catherine gown. That purple confection has, I suspect, rather more detail than the movie shows. In looking at your quick scan ofthe gown, I hadn't realised the ruffle hem on the petticoat, for instance.
Beautiful but why are there only 4 comments? Like that literally looks like the dress Mia Goth wore as Pearl.
I was loving this video until this American lady started being political and passing comments on British history! We are not the only country with a past you know!
You look so wonderful! It's so neat.
You look awesome
Thank you!
Love it, it is amazing 😻❤️🫶👍👏😻😊
Thank you! 😊
Jane Austen Scholar....now thats a peak achievement for an author.
🤗So beautiful congratulations 🤗👌👌👌What a beautiful color, I also love that color👌.... Really stunning for a first attempt 🤗 if this is your first attempt imagine the outcome for the next ones😉🤗You have talent
The fact that we still have gowns like this from over 140 years ago is insane
wow that's a big tea cup! did the average size vary over time? i have some tea cups and they're kinda...tiny. i think i got it in a dishes set while in college. i like the idea of a bigger cup..makes more sense for minimizing labor 🙂
The term semi-precious should be banished! It's not really synonymous with 'less expensive' as it simply means these are more commonly found in the earth than are 'precious' stones. Just as beautiful, just more of them. As a garnet girl I am NEVER disappointed with my birthstone--there are so many varied colors reds, purplish, green (Tsavorites and very expensive in any gem over 1/4 of a carat), color-change, and orange (mandarin--so much fire), what more could a gem lover want, right? Same with the glorious aquamarine--an infinite number of shades of blue than one could dream exist. Thanks for this video!
Where is that?
Сollins wasn´t a first cousin
Not a robe a la transformation?
I do want to point one thing out about Mr Collins: he is not a direct cousin but slightly removed. So more than okay in Regency terms but still why they call him cousin. Even in these days that distance might be seen as ok, I dont know how distanced it was. But of course in Regency times even a first cousin was fine, and as someone here pointed out, you were likely to know your cousins from a young age. You would know if you liked them or not and possibly fall in love. Interactions with non family was so restricted that getting to know some one organically was hard. Balls and other courtship occasions was basically like todays Tinder and you never knew if that swipe would lead to something good or disasterous!
Wow, what an incredible gown! I wish I had your sewing skills <3
I wanna see what the 99% of us would have afforded, please and thank you 😊
❤
Everyone looked so lovely.
Many thanks for this fact based history ode such a fascinating scientist. I think future historical dramas about famous men should automatically default to a stance that women always contributed substantially to their endeavors. It’s societal conventions that has written them out, not a lack of intellectual contribution🌊🌊🏄♀️🏄♂️
I spy a kitty🐈⬛🐕🩷
I’m so delighted to have found your channel! I’m looking forward to seeing your next project and your inspiration from this amazing collection! Thanks for sharing! Your dress does give many of those costumes a run for their money! Very pretty! I love the little kick!😊
I wonder when cheerleading began, would be interesting to see the very first cheerleading costumes!
I'm currently trying to make the Simplicity 9088. My mock-up came down to my mid-thigh and I was dithering over how much to shorten it, so thanks for giving me a guide!
You look like you are having a lot of fun! And the costume is beautiful!
Could you make a chemise a la reine with African wax fabric? Or is the fabric too stiff? Basically an African character would like to sew (i would never wear this because it would be an appropriation) African wax fabric into a chemise a la reine. Or would the stiffness of African wax fabric be more suited to a robe Italian from the 1770s? Also if you were walking the streets of Paris in the 1780's would you see non aristocratic women wearing dresses like the chemise a la Reine? Didn't noodle on Instagram (whom I am now following) make a Woolen chemise a la Reine? Would that be a feasible garment for a time traveller?
Would they have worn Brunswick gowns and reddingotes as travel wear?
So the English gown at 22:02 worn by rose Adelaide ducreux? Would that have been worn amongst monarchist circles or republican, because whilst i think rose Adelaide was a monarchist (i may be assuming she dhared with Elisabeth vigee le Brun who definitely supported Marie Antoinette) , Also would it have been good enough for the opera?
I loved this tutorial I would save it for my next project, at the moment I'm working on a shift which only historical trait is to be made with the material I could find at home, it is my first attempt at regency clothing and historical clothing in general.
Morning tea is the most common for me, followed by afternoon tea. I am sensitive to caffeine, so if I drinks any in the evening, I need decaffeinated tea. Luckily these days it exists. Otherwise I may drink hot chocolate in the evening. I only learned to like tea as an adult. The key factor was adding fresh lemon in the tea. That's my preferred addition to black tea. Then I found out green tea and how to make it good, not bitter. It won over black tea 6-1. Good green tea is fine as it is, I don't usually add anything to it (though some loose leaf blends with, say, cherry are delicious too.) But then there are some unfortunate cheap (black) teas that I can only get down with almost 50% milk and some sugar.
Couldn’t help but cringe when he touched it without gloves
I have a hard time liking Bridgerton (I have seen snippets of the show and didn’t find it interesting) when later I found out the author of those books is one of THE biggest Libtards on this planet.

Many of the jewels of the British crown are tainted with blood. One is the Kohinoor diamond. It was a heartbreaking scene when I saw the painting of the skinny young 11 year old Maharaja Duleep Sigh surrendering by force his only precious possession to the British authorities the famous Kohinoor diamond. He died almost penniless in UK. I have read articles too about how Queen Mary the wife of King George V acquired the jewels of the dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna. When the dowager empress fled Russia she was able to take with her a big vault of her jewels. When she died the surviving relatives who fled Russia and are cousins to King George V plan to sell the jewels so the proceeds will be used to open a paper business and they can start new life. The jewels were sent to Buckingham Palace for safekeeping. Instead of helping her husband's relatives who are already broke Queen Mary held the jewels against the wishes of the empress relatives until the height of the great depression then she offered rock bottom price. Since they have no other means to survive as life were very hard on those times and money very hard to get they were forced to sell it. The hard part is that Queen Mary did not pay most of the agreed payment. The empress survivors lived the remainder of their lives in pauper like condition.
It’s beautiful, and Madame de pompadour is one of my fashion idols x
The Nur Ul AIN tiara is the most expensive tiara in the world. Its value is intensified by its huge diamonds and the incorporation of pink and blue diamonds. Its value is literally more expensive than the combined value of all the British royal tiaras. The most expensive emerald tiara is the 7 emerald tiara of Empress Farah of Iran The emeralds are embedded with huge diamonds including several big purplish diamonds. One purplish diamond alone can cost more than 2 Greville emerald tiaras. The most expensive ruby tiara is also found in Iran. The ruby tiara of Princes Ashraf contain huge Burmese rubies topped with big diamonds. Many of the British jewels are blood tainted so as Iran jewels that are plundered in India. With regards to crowns and scepter British has the upper hand due to the incorporation of Cullinan and Kohinoor diamond. The two most expensive crowns in the world are the British Queen Mother crown and the Imperial State crown.
Cute!!😮😮
The cut steel tiara - cause it is very exceptional from all this diamonds perls and other stones. The Khedive Tiara is very beautiful.
I love what you made it amazing I was wondering if you’d be willing to collaborate on something I’ve recently become assistant curator to a early 20th century museum in central California called Madera and I’m wanting to create a social media account to promote the museum. The museum has extensive 1870s 1880s and other decades get back to me if you’re interested by chance are you near a place called Fresno?
Can you make strawhat from one piece
Black tea won out because when Sir Robert Fortune went to China to steal tea so they could grow it in India, he found out the Chinese were mixing a chemical with green tea to make it more green--but this chemical was poisonous. Once he brought this information back to England, they stopped drinking green tea.
Completely unrelated but has anyone told you that you remind them of Katie Holmes!
Great Job, thanks for the information!!!!
Very inspiring 👏
Very snarky comments about the British Royal Family but not about any European Royal Families who also had gifts from other countries. You clearly have a bias against Britain.
Have you looked through my other videos? 😅 I’m clearly an Anglophile and a Janeite (as in, fan of Jane Austen), I have a graduate degree in English, and I have English ancestry. Everyone is allowed to critique one of the largest global empires of the 19th and 20th centuries, for which there is a great deal more info than some of the other countries mentioned.
@@AJaneiteSews You Are Right to Mention the Horrors that comes with the Luxury the Royal Families received, Horrors came with these Things, If you can't handle hearing something, Don't do it in the first place, And if you can't stand hearing something, it's always bad or evil,
