Behind the Scenics
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 พ.ค. 2019
This is a channel entirely dedicated to scenic artists! Behind the Scenics was created with the hope that these videos will benefit Scenic Artists from all backgrounds, but especially for people who have limited resources and Scenic education. People should not be limited by where they live or who they have been fortunate to work with. With technology, we can help a wider Scenic community than ever before.
Videos will be uploaded weekly (or as often as I can manage... I'm busy painting!) covering tips and techniques for all things scenic.
Check out the Guild of Scenic Artists for more great resources and connecting with other Scenics!

Wood Panel Trompe l'oeil - Union Sample | Scenic Art
I'm finally back with a video detailing the process for my union entrance exam sample. The sample is supposed to be high quality, TV/film level trompe l'oeil and faux work, so while it's not something we can do all the time in theater, understanding this process can help you simplify a process for your own theater projects.

Faux Wood - Generic Dark Wood with Glazing - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 3.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
There are infinite ways to make faux wood, and in this video I show how to use several layers of different color glazes to create a more colorful and rich dark wood than you can get with a single layer. This process was worked out by Ryan Miller at the Santa Fe Opera 2021. Subscribe to keep up with my monthly uploads related to all things scenic! Instagram: behindthescenics Email: behind.the.sc...
Finishing a Backdrop Edge - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 9102 ปีที่แล้ว
It is possible to buy a backdrop with a finished edge already sewn, but it is also an option to buy the muslin at a slightly wider size so that you have excess and can finish it yourself. There are different ways to finish the sides of a backdrop, but one very easy method uses just glue, scissors, and a stapler. The glue we used for this was Flexbond from Rosco. HVLP Spray Gun Basics - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 2.5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Pneumatic paint sprayers are a very useful tool for Scenic Artists when there is a lot of scenery that needs a flat base color or a very fine, smooth finish. However, spray guns can be intimidating, confusing, and frustrating if you don't know how to use them, or if they start acting up. In this video, I'll go over the basics of a gravity fed HVLP, how to take it apart to properly clean it, wha...
Plastic Stamp - 4 Techniques - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 1.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
There are many tools Scenics can use to create various effects, and a great one to keep in mind is plastic! Different thicknesses of plastic will create different looks, and in this video I show 4 effects that you can get with a thin, plastic, which create a great texture for stone, marble, aging, or whatever unique project comes your way. Blocking Technique for Aging & Texture - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 4.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Anything can be a "paint brush" if you are creative enough, and something as simple as a wooden block can make great marks and texture. Blocking is a great way to build up texture and layers as a base coat for aged scenergy or faux paint peeling effects. Subtle Faux Marble Texture - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 1.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a video I took while at work of some faux marble pedestals that I painted for a Fendi display. While it took several layers of both paint and sealer, it was a very easy technique, and can either be your final look or the base for a more complicated, veined marble or stone. Using FEV to change Silver to Gold - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This video was shot while I was at work, and we needed to change a bunch of silver candelabras to gold/brass. Rather than repaint or re-leaf the whole thing, we just brushed a French Enamel Varnish over it, and voila! Turned to gold. If you're not sure what an FEV is, check out my video that explains what it is and how to use/make it! th-cam.com/video/YGkFgsBBLlM/w-d-xo.html Subscribe to keep u...
How to Paint Quick Wood Knots with only a Chip Brush - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 10K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's an extremely loose, quick 'n dirty technique for faux wood grain when you're in a hurry (as we so often are in theater!). The trick is to have a good reference, and use trashy chip brushes to your advantage to speed the process along. And to trust the 50 foot distance. No Brush Landscape Project - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I demonstrate an "anything-but-a-brush" landscape project, which is a common, useful project often assigned to students. A project like this, where typical paint brushes are not allowed is a great way to familiarize yourself with unique and creative tools. As Scenic Artists, we often have to improvise or make our own tools to help us with the project at hand. This project will for...
Why Brush Strokes Matter - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 4.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a small, fundamental video about why it is important to think through your brush strokes and process from the very beginning of your project. It introduces brushing in an X, V, or figure 8 pattern to help avoid holidays, get into grooves, and spread paint evenly. Faux Stained Glass on Muslin - Part 2 - Scenic Art
มุมมอง 1.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This video introduces using muslin to make faux stained glass. Muslin is a good option depending on the design and budget of your show. This is Part 2, which covers using glues, acrylic mediums, and sealers. Part 1 shows paint thinned with water. I used SuperSats from Rosco, because it stays vibrant even when applied translucently. I used Clear Acrylic Gloss, CrystalGel, and Flexbond glue. To m...

How to Paint Basic Faux Carrara Marble - Scenic Art
What medium are you using to paint marble?
You said feathers, I was like GIIIIIIRL, my birbbbs had some to share throughout time, I saved one of each the first time I found one but I kept harvesting the other ones when there was ahahahah didn't know what to do with them✨💖
You need to do a video on how to create faux Blue marble with a dark sapphire base
A useless how to video without a materials list. Btw, you need to work on your skills. The graining you did might look OK from 20 feet away, but looks quite amateur and unrealistic up close. (I'm an experienced faux painting artist).
Thank you
Such easy techniques but the final look is stunning
Thank you so much! Been trying to figure out how to make MDF tiles look like linoleum for a dollhouse project and this will be perfect!
So impressive! I am not this talented- think I may have to go the peel-able wallpaper route.
Hmmm, seems like people copy each others interpretation of marble than the real thing. Here's an example of real marble. usenaturalstone.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Veria-Green-marble.-Photo-courtesy-of-Stone-Group-International..jpg
LOVE IT!💕 I would love to do somethong like that on a wall in my house 🤦♀. Thank you!
Super vidéo Merci
Fantastic video. Thank you.
Hi, when you mention flat sealer, is that the same as any Matt glaze ?
Hi! Yes, they are essentially the same thing.
Wonderfully done!
Can I do it on my wall??
I just finished reading the blog and practicing the mixing tutorials, and I enjoyed it so much. It was very helpful!
I have several 10 foot cabinets (primed mdf) to grain like this, to look like one panel (not masked boards) - what method would work best for the lines to avoid stop-start strokes? Maybe the roller?
Can I ask what kind of safety glass are u using?
Incredible work! Very impressive👏
👍👍👍👍👍👍
This was god awful to watch
Genius!
Hi what type of paint eg oil, acrylic, watercolor do you use most including this painting please?
This is beautiful and exactly what finish I want….. 𝒃𝒖𝒕, man that is A LOT of products & steps= time
Your videos are hands down the best ones I have found on this subject. You should write a book. I love these tecnniques and it's been very hard for me to find proper material on it outside of the standard/classical drawing techniques people give.
Hey! You did the color mixing for rosco paint color video too right?!
I don't get the holiday joke.... And I feel less for it.
Woooow that was very helpful thank you
This is the linoleum trick
Can you do this on concrete columns or is that a different technique?
Hi! You can do it on any surface, technically, but you will need to prime it properly. There are concrete primers that you can find at hardware stores that you should use. The technique would be a little different for the painting because you can't used paint that is too thin, because you don't want the paint to drip and run.
@@BehindtheScenics Thank you.
You are fabulous. I’ve been searching for color theory explained and can’t wait to dive into all your tutorials. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this.
This is EXCELLENT.... I'm doing a brick wall project and I'm USING this..... On the 2nd half of the video, where did you get the brick stencil? Thanks for POSTING THIS..... You have NO idea how you just inspired my mural to take a different direction!!!
Amazon does have a variety of stencils. I plan on doing my poured concrete cellar walls at my tiny camp. I use it as the main entrance..
Great teaching. Really clever and helpful to show one done the wrong way. Genius
Can I paint these techniques onto materials like foam core board, cardboard, or super thin plywood?
You can, yes, but I wouldn't recommend cardboard. It is too much like paper and has a tendency to buckle and bubble and warp.
Love this so much would you please do another scenic Tromp L’ oeil painting I would love to paint one for my home. Thank you so much 😊
This is exactly the video i was looking for and technique. I dont want to have the added plaster step. I have a concrete wall at my cottage that i want to look like a brick wall.. It is inside , any suggestions on what kind of paint to use?
If it isn't going to get any wear and tear, you should be fine with any paint that can stick to concrete.
Thank you!! we live FT in a RV and I'm going to do this for our coffee bar area. Light, easily covered without damage to the walls, it wont fllex in hot and cold temps! Excited to try it!! Love that roller method!!
I work on the Set Design Club with a teacher at the school where I work. I need to make a design for a 4 x 8 foot panel to represent a bookcase filled with trophies and medals. Have you done any tutorials on these subject matters? If you have, I would love to see them!
This is beautifuy talked through and demonstrated just as beutifully!!!!!! I am just learning all the vocabulary, etc. You are soooo talented!
Wow, I've been searching everywhere for this information & you answered so many questions I had. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been trying to understand this technique for months, and your video was the only one I could find on TH-cam which demonstrated it!
I just found out about your channel on Facebook group Guild of Scenic Artists. With 29 years in the theater in my former life, I am LOVING your work and find it so wonderful to watch! Thank you! May so many students learn from what you have to teach! ❤
Hey May I ask what was Used For the Aging ?
You can use a number of things... you can make a glaze or wash by adding water and/or sealer/clear coat into the paint. That makes it translucent.
What kind of paint did you use?
For the video I used craft paint, but in general I don't recommend that, the pigment quality isn't great. You can use artist paints, house paints, or Scenic paints depending on what your project is.
Will this work on a statue? Or will the paint be too runny for a statue?
It can work on a statue, just use less water in the paint if it is dripping/moving too much. You can add a sealer/glaze into the paint instead of water to get the right balance. But the technique is the same. You just might have to experiment with the paint consistency.
🙌Bravo!! 🙌 You have cured my ailing mind about what to do with old ceramic tiles in a property I just purchased. Thank You!! 🎄Merry Christmas & Very Happy New Year🥳
Make sense
Wow… that’s actually pretty impressive
What the color to become like that?
