Map of the Thailand - Burma Railway: Part 8 - Anankwin to Thanbyuzayat
This video is the 8th in an 8-part series which plots the accurate trace of the historic Thailand - Burma Railway over the current Google Earth landscape. This video follows the railway for 46.0km from Anankwin to Thanbyuzayat.
This series of videos will only cover the railway itself - the railway tracks, stations and bridges. Camps, cemeteries and other features will be covered in a second series of videos in the future.
A few things to note:
1) This video shows the railway as it was in late 1944 and early 1945. It was constantly evolving, with new sections being laid and other sections abandoned or rerouted. There were possibly other sidings, spur tracks and such along the railway, which were concealed or camouflaged and are not shown in this map.
2) Rivers have changed course over the last 80 years (especially through Kanchanaburi) and the position of bridges etc. reflect where the rivers were in WW2.
3) Some bridges are not placed on the map, because their exact position is unknown.
4) Google Earth imagery is constantly changing, and I may update these videos as better imagery becomes available. It is currently especially bad around the Lintin area. It's worth noting that Google's imagery never perfectly overlays over the previous iteration, and always shifts a bit.
If you are interested in exploring sections of the railway, you will find these videos helpful.

Exploring the Thailand - Burma "Death Railway"
Just was up at tha kanun today. This map is fantastic. You can see the part of remaining original track behind the temple. Your map seems very accurate. Is it basically 100% accurate using gps? Amazing work!
Thanks for your kind comment. I’m glad you found the map useful. Yes, for the most part it is accurate to within 10m (GPS accuracy), except under the lake.
@exploretbr interesting a fair bit north of nam tok can still be seen by air (earth) as shown on your superb videos. Will report what else can be discovered! Have you ever used a metal detector? Is this right or moral? Only looking for possible artifacts for museums etc? Require approvals? Let me know your opinion. Thanks.
Regarding metal detectors, my Thai friends frequently use them and find all kinds of stuff. The railway is abandoned and doesn’t belong to anyone, so no permits are required. Regarding morals, thats a personal choice. I don’t take anything, and i advise the same in my videos. But i know others do. I know of one person who took enough pieces back home to recreate a short section of railway in their yard.
@@exploretbr have you got any camp on any map you have seen known as the 3 coconuts camp? Its after na kan and before wan yen. Thx in advance
No, never heard of it before. Also nothing similar in Thai.
Absolutely fascinating, thank you so much for doing all this hard work and research. I am taking my mother here in two weeks to see where my Grandad was kept prisoner. Lennard Nickelson (my grandad) was at chungkai, Bankhao, Tamakun south, 226 kilo camp and the back to Kanchanaburi before release.
Thanks very much for the kind words. Really happy to hear you found it useful. Enjoy the trip with your mum.
brilliant video. I have a place up there. will explore these locations v shortly . thanks for sharing
Thanks for your kind words. Glad the video helped. Have a look at my other video “The Tonchan Bridges” which carries on for another couple of kilometers beyond where this one ends. A very interesting section of the railway.
where can i get a copy of the map at the start of the video pls?
That map is not publicly available. It’s my own map which I made years ago to illustrate my videos. You can find much better maps with gps-scale precision in my new 8-part map series. You would probably find these maps to be more useful in finding the railway on today’s landscape.
@@exploretbr i own a house north of na kaan right next to the track. I was told the troops used to bathe in the lake at the bottom of the land we are on. Theres also a cave in the mountain right next to us which the japanese used for meetings and maybe storing ammo etc. Im heading up there after the rainy season finishes as i was told its a bit dangerous
Not familiar with the name Na Kaan. Where is?
@@exploretbr its 15km north east of kanchanaburi between wang lan and wang yen stations.
Thank you Kevin and Stefan for the well planned, highly informative video. In particular, I found the branch line that led from today's railway station down to the river very interesting. It's amazing to learn that a railway line actually passed through where several guest houses are today. I believe the branch line was constructed in early January, 1945. To date, I've had to rely on the Warmenhoven a report, the original copy is available free of charge from the Archives at Kew, London. It's reference is FO628/67.
Thank you very much for creating this wonderful, highly educational series of videos. Slowly, I shall work my way through them. From the first part I have learnt how extensive the railway sidings/marshalling yards were at Ban Pong and Khao Din. Also of interest is the spur which leads up to today's hospital, just outside Kanchanaburi town. Truly amazing stuff! Again a big big thank you, Ajarn Andy.
Has anyone found camp #2 at songkurai?
You probably know the Hwy 323 bridge over the Song Kalia river? The railway bridge was exactly where the highway bridge is now. You can find the old concrete footings in the river under the highway bridge. The camp was on the left hand side of the railway (facing three pagodas). The Japanese camp on the south bank and the PoW camp on the north bank, here: maps.app.goo.gl/1BnjwDWBg3i8rDNn7
Thank you for your wonderfull videos my father was an aus pow and I have been to the railway a few times but I find your content great my father was vx18869 thanks again
THANK YOU
Most welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hi Kevin and Stefan, Let me start by saying: thank you very much for all your wonderful work and good information on the TBR! We - the SHBSS (Stichting Herdenking Birma-Siam spoorweg en Pakan Baroe spoorweg) - are a Dutch foundation who commemorate the victims of the Thai Burma Railway and the Pekanbaru or Sumatra railway. Our followers now mainly consist of ((great)grand)children of Dutch POW’s who worked (and often died) on one of these Death railways. Besides our annual commemoration service we also try to educate and inform the public on this topic and help descendants with exploring their roots and discovering the story of their relatives who worked on one of these railroads. For this purpose we also try to make a bi-annual trip to Thailand with survivors and their descendants - as a kind of pilgrimage - to revisit the places where it all happened. We just announced our next trip (planned for November 2025). For educational purposes, in preparation of our next trip and in also in commemoration of the completion of the line next Oktober - we would like to show our social media followers a bit more about the TBR in the coming months. How the railway ran, how it was build, what is left of it to find, etc. A lot of information, video and images we already have. But you’ve made such a nice, informative and extensive (video) series over the last few years that I was hoping I could get your permission to use your work in our online posts? (Of course we will mention you - and when possible link to your accounts if possible - so you would get full credits for your work in these posts.) Please let me know if we can use your materials and how you would like us to credit you / reference to you? Thank you again for your work! Kind regards Flora Stichting Herdenking Birma-Siam spoorweg en Pakan Baroe spoorweg (SHBSS) www.shbss.nl www.youtube.com/@shbss www.linkedin.com/company/stichting-herdenking-birma-siam-spoorweg-en-pakan-baroe-spoorweg facebook.com/StichtingSHBSS
thank you
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
I went and it was WORTH IT. It was wonderful to explore history by viewing the actual places, "First Hand". The TBRC museum was especially interesting to me. I only wish that I had viewed your video before going. Your video certainly added "depth". Thank You.
Thanks for watching. 🙂
thank you so much
Most welcome, it's my pleasure.
So this video now completes the whole line of the Thailand-Burma-Railway. What a great job by you (and Stefan), for now for the first time we have a complete and detailed map.
Thanks for the kind words Leo. Much appreciated.
One day maybe the Burmese leftovers of the railway will also be as easily accessible as they are (more or less) on the Thai side. Just in case, we now know where to go and explore, thanks to your map.
Yes, I hope we can go and explore the Burmese side. The TBREG group are very keen to cross the border at Three Pagodas. But it is simply too dangerous now.
Amazingly, I have been subscribed to this channel for a few years, and I am still unable to find any other channel that has documented the Death Railway with such remarkable research and dedication. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks for your interest, and the kind words. Really appreciate it.
Way to go! Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication! Always interesting!
Stefan’s contribution to this project was massive. A big thanks to him too. Thanks for watching, and your kind comment.
so, the journey finally passed the 3 pagodas. That is also the farthest point that I ever reached.
Yes, most of us as well. Hopefully one day we can venture safely into Burma.
thank you
Most welcome, and thank you for watching.
ตามมาจากกลุ่มนะครับ ผมตั้งใจดูมากครับ
Thank you for your interest.
What a pity that so much of the track is lost in the artifical lake/reservoir now.
Yes, it’s a shame that we will probably never see that section of the railway again. At least not in our lifetime. Thanks again for your continued interest Leo.

I watch it so many times. Thanks.
Thanks Alex. And thanks for the daily summaries on your FB page.
Absolutely loving this new series outstanding work again
Thanks very much Seth. Glad you’re enjoying it.
These videos of your research on the tracks of the TBR are simply great! It's somehow "sad" that there will be only 8 parts.
Not just my research - Stefan’s contribution to this project was enormous. These videos would not be what they are without his help. But don’t worry, these videos are not the end of the road. And thanks, yet again, for the kind words.
This is the very best thing. From the waterfall station up And it will be a landmark to continue exploring the railway. Thank you very much.
Thank you for your continued interest in my channel Kawee. It is much appreciated.
Uploading at midnight is some insane dedication 😂
Thanks for your interest and comment. The idea was that people could watch it over their morning coffee. The reality is that TH-cam has a scheduler, you can just set when videos go public. They are mostly uploaded already, but I'm still finalising the last 2.
For people living in Europe it is a perfect time thanks to the time difference! We have dinner and before going to bed we can look at Kevin's new video rather than watching TV with an old part of the Columbo series that we have seen several times before. 🤣 😂
❤
Thanks again Alex. :)
Always excited when see it.
I think most people would have believed "The Railway" was a single track winding it's way through the Thai jungle. What you have created is an aerial view of all the ancillary lines, junctions, stations and marshalling yards that go into a working railway. Well done and thank you for this interesting education.
Yes, you are right. When I first started this project all those years ago I thought the same - a single track winding through the jungle. But when I was walking through the Kinsaiyok area in 2007 and found the sidings and reversing triangle off in the jungle, the extent of the railway system became clear. Thanks yet again for your kind words.
Another great research work, in particular the several sidings most of which I had no idea before
Thanks Leo, I'm glad it was useful.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your work!
Most welcome! It is something I enjoy doing. Thanks for your interest, and kind comment.
