    I just purchased a similar unit. It looks the same. What size pump do you have for to chiller. I have a 800GPH pump would that work. I am in central Florida. With a 275 gallon pond.

      @USKoiPonds 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If its for a 275 gallon pond you can probably use a smaller pump. Maybe 500-600gph is enough. Just make sure you install a ball valve before the chiller to control the water volume if you need the chilled water to be cooler or warmer. Good luck and let us know how it works for you.

    Very informative video. Here in Giddings Texas we have a 300 gallon in-ground pond with 8 large goldfish that we have had for a few years. During summer we put several one gallon frozen bottles of water in the pond to keep it under 80F every day. It is a hassle. Looking to install a chiller that will keep the water at about 65-70F. Any recommendations?

    So the RDF technically is a filtration? You will need a pump to pump from the pond to RDF unit and back out to the pond? Sorry I'm a beginning. Can i get this particular model and brand. I'm interesting in this unit.

    • @USKoiPonds
      @USKoiPonds ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes RDF is a type of mechanical filter. Some units also incorporate a biological side and are known as Combination RDF or Combi for short. Regardless of the unit you do need a pump to either pump water into the RDF or pump water out of the RDF and back to the pond.

    I am not sure which option to choose from... a pump fed rdf setup or a pump fed bead setup for a 1400 gallon pond. What are your thoughts? I do want to eventually increase the size of my pond and have a bottom drain.

    • @USKoiPonds
      @USKoiPonds 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi ilovedragons and thanks for watching our video! I prefer to have RDFs work as gravity fed vs pump fed due to the fact that debis/fish poop gets to the filter intact and it's easier to remove by the filter screen than after it has been shredded into a million particles by the pump impeller. We prefer to install bead filter if pump fed. Now, with that been said, if in the future you want to increase the size of the pond and you are almost sure you can plumb a bottom drain for gravity fed system, then the RDF is your best bet. You can use it as pump fed for a while and switch the float sensors for gravity fed when you upgrade your pond. Almost all RDFs in the market give you that option. Let us know how things go.

    ...isn't a koi pond basically an outdoor aquarium?

    • @USKoiPonds
      @USKoiPonds 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Koi ponds have a very different demand in terms of filtration systems. In aquariums you don't deal with tree leaves floating in the water, the extreme summer heat or winter freezing, green water from the sun's UV rays, and so many other things don't translate from aquariums to ponds and vice versa.

I'm putting in a waterfall with a sectioned off area 24' x 24' x 36" depth.if I run a pump through a filter chiller system would this maintain a suitable temp range for trout within the coordinate section? And what size system ? Approx cost.

    • @USKoiPonds
      @USKoiPonds 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve! A 24'x24'x3' area is aprox 13,000 gallons. For that water volume you would need a massive chiller unit to drop the temperature a few degrees and maintain it. You would need to get in touch with a mechanical engineer with a thermodynamics background to size that for you. And I guess the cost of the unit and to run it will be substantial. Good luck and let us know how the project goes!

      If the PVC pipe is old or has been exposed to UV (Sun Light) for a long period of time, it becomes brittle and shatters when trying to use this tool specially the 2-inch PVC. I always use the old-school saw for pipe that look old and brittle.

      It should only be used on newer pipe. I use a saw-all to cut away old piping that I intend to splice in to. It is also not very good trimming a fraction of an inch off 2" schedule 40

    • @gadgethunter5732
      @gadgethunter5732 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrSgtslawter I work in the HVAC industry. When cutting new S636 pipe to be used as vent pipe, it's mandated that I use a large tube cutter style tool , or even a mitre saw so that the cut is perfectly square. The shear doesn't fit the bill for that perfect cut. I purchased the tool with the intention of using it to remove old obsolete ABS and DWV PVC pipe when retrofitting furnaces. I figured it would be faster than using a hacksaw or sawzall. You can imagine my disappointment when the old plastic vent pipes started shattering in my face. Luckily I'm a big believer in safety glasses. So as far as it's usefulness goes, about the only thing left is cutting the S636 pipe used on the air intake of the furnace, and the previously mentioned spruce branches that need trimming for mounting trail cams. Oh, and to help persuade customers that don't want to pay their bill.

      Hi Jason! You could just use one skimmer but the problem with that setup is that while the bottom drain aerators are running, the floating debris won't go all the way to the skimmer because the bubbles at the surface act as a blockage and the skimmer will only "skim" the water right in front of it and any other debris before the bottom drain "air ring" will stay on the other side. Not sure if you can picture what I'm saying. Yes this pond has 4 wall jets/returns creating circular motion in opposite directions. The glass is custom cut/fabricated at a glass plant here in Houston. You can find glass places almost everywhere and they will cut it to whatever size you need. Make sure it is tempered and laminated glass.

      Chilling 300 gallons should be piece of cake for one of these units. 👍🏻👍🏻
