Kayak Camping Knife Perfection?
มุมมอง 1K7 ปีที่แล้ว
I was searching for a quality belt knife to take on a kayak camping trip down the Buffalo River (125 miles/6 days). I wanted something that was inexpensive, light weight, stainless steel, and of good quality. I think I found a winner in the Mora Bushcraft Orange knife. amzn.to/2pe5g6r amzn.to/2tRNSJC

It is a handy little kit to keep all of your navigation gear organized. I give credit to Rocky Hollow for giving me the idea. Is the stern bulkhead big enough for sleeping bag, cook kit and other gear for an overnight? I'm close to purchasing this one. Thanks!!
I would say it would depend on the size of your gear. A down bag that can compress down would work, but a bulky synthetic bag wouldn't be ideal. I also backpack, so most of my gear is smaller and lighter, so I manage fine for multi day trips. I put my tent in a dry bag right behind the seat and top quilt, sleep pad, cook gear and food, spare clothes, misc. items all in the dry hatch. Good luck on your purchase!
Rangefinder takes a lot of the guess work out, pacing is a good backup in case your batteries die
Great overview video. It is nearly 7 years later, are you still using this kayak and if so how has it held up?
Yes, I still have it and love it. I have done many many river miles as well as time on lakes. It has held up extremely well and has met all of my needs. Thanks for watching...take care.
@@OutdoorWanderer1 thank you for replying. I’m most likely going to get one very soon after many weeks of research. This is a very big purchase for me so I wanted to ensure I get something I’ll enjoy. Thank you again.
Wow! Thanks for this. I had no idea this product existed and I can't wait to try it out.
I hope it works well for you too. Thanks for watching.
Great tip, though I'd just run a bowl of water because it's painful to watch that tap running ;-)
I subscribed :). I like this kayak and your presentation. Thank you.
Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Excellent run through of your land nav carry system! like that canvas mat you had spread out, what brand is it? Thanks
I believe I got the ground cloth from a company called PNW Bushcraft. Thanks for watching!
On my bucket list for 5 years, im doing it this year but breaking it up over a course of all summer. April 1st is our first day!!
Good for you!! It is such an amazing and beautiful place.
@@OutdoorWanderer1 yes it is, I grew up here and have been all over it but not straight through it all
Thank you for showing us what scrubbing looks like, there’s this thing called editing, where you can cut up the clips
There is also a thing called closing a video and moving along, if it doesn't interest you. You are welcome to use that as well. Thanks.
Looks awesome! We have a trip planned for next spring so I was curious, what month/days did this trip occur?
I believe it was the last week of April. Your best bet is to try to arrive two days after a moderate rainfall in mid to late April. Nights can still be a little cool and rain is common this time of year but the trees have just begun to leaf out in their spring green and the day time temps are warm and there are not a lot of bugs out yet.
@@snoboardz1972 thank ya brother!
Thanks for the video. 😎👍🏻
Loved your video! Great job!
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I have many Alps products, they are amazing for the price point. my chaos 2 has had a decade of yearly trips down the buffalo as well as backpacking through Yellowstone and Glacier NP. still strong still water proof
Couldn't agree more. I am happy with everything I have ever gotten from them. Thanks for watching!
Did not know there were options without yearly fees. Thank you for this video
I am glad you found it beneficial. Safe travels.
Liked the video btw!
Just wondering. Why do yall use sit in yaks up there instead of sit on tops? We use sit on tops in rougher Rapids. Just wondering. Brother lives up close too there. Thinking about trying to get up there to do some of that river. Fishing any good?
Thanks for watching! I would say kayak choice is all about personal preference. One of the guys we normally go with does use a sit on top and really likes it. As for me, I do some colder weather kayaking too and like the added wind protection. I also just feel more in control sitting lower in the water. Like I said, mostly just personal preference. As for fishing, I haven't done any fishing on the Buffalo, so I can't speak to that. I hope you can make it up there, It is a beautiful place!
Sit inside kayaks are generally more stable in rougher water and more maneuverable. Sit on top usually have a pontoon type of hull underneath which is very stable as long as your weight stays between the pontoons. Which is great for a fishing kayak because as long as you stay within those pontoons standing doesnt dramatically effect its stability. Sit inside kayaks usually have a V shaped hull which allows you to lean the kayak on edge and still have some stability. So as long as you take waves head on the difference between sitin/on top isnt to different. But the moment you have to change angle, lets say to avoid a rock or log in the middle of rapids its much trickier to stay stable in a sit on top because you will be leaned over to the side more.
Love the video! Where was the stone bridge at? Before or after st George?
Glad you liked it! The old bridge may be right after St. George, but I'm not 100 percent sure on that.....Sorry.
Beautiful areas, Thumbs up
It sure is! Thanks for watching.
Great review Sir! I still have my original poncho liner from 1979 and have added a couple to my collection. My son is now a big fan of the poncho liner and has several of his own. The poncho liner was arguably one of the best pieces of gear the Army ever fielded.
Thank you! They are an awesome piece of kit. And to repurpose for this use was a great idea. Thanks for watching, and take care.
whoa , the wildest run i have seen so far. i was trying to do the upper river this spring and kinda glad i didnt get to cuz seems some rough water. class 3 ? which month was that ?
This was in April. There are a few sections that can have rough water, but for the most part it is an awesome paddle. It is very weather dependent. Hope you are able to experience it some time. Thanks for watching.
I enjoyed every minute Thank you for sharing. I just bought an Old town Loon 106 Angler. I have subscribed
Thank you, I am glad you liked it. I hope you enjoy your new yak as much as I have mine. It sounds like you make a good choice. Take care.
enjoyed...!!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
save your self much trouble. Use cooled ashes from your fire mixed with dish soap to make a paste. Use this paste to remove soot and burned residue.
I'll keep that in mind. Thanks
Great tip! 😎👍🏻
Is that in Tennessee?
No, it begins in Ponca Arkansas.
Absolutely beautiful!
It is an amazing place for sure. Thanks for watching!
This worked perfectly, Thank you!
Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you. Take care.
My man has not watched a travel packing videos - that’s a girl’s jam!!
Thank you! Gonna get me monocular! My binoculars are pretty heavy
Oh hell no!!! Lol
Hahaha.....it's not for everybody. Thanks for watching.
Good kit there .. I would add some para cord to the map sleeve then you can hang it around neck for hands free .. cheers I will build a kit cheers Chris & Sam
Good suggestion, Thanks!
how well is this hoodie holding up now?
So far so good. I don't wear it on a regular basis, only on trips and outings. I have probably had it out 20 to 30 times and had held up well. I am still happy with the purchase.
Is the whole river shadow or only some parts?
also really cool video
It just depends on what part of the river and the time of day.. Glad you liked it.
I got out in 04 and was in active duty Army in a combat unit and I’ve never heard them called a woobie. We called them poncho liner or liner. This “woobie” shit must be a pretty recent deal.
My experience was the same as yours. I'm not sure where that came from either. Thanks for watching!
That's awesome. I live in Arkansas and love to float the Buffalo. We live very close to it. I have been getting ideas for a weekend float trip, but we have to wait until after our dog goes. She is old with diabetes and don't want to put the burden on someone else to watch her and give injections. I have thought about making my own dehydrated dinners, mostly soups and pasta meals. I love the cereal idea. Super easy and light.
You are so lucky living close to such a treasure. It is such a beautiful place. I hope you find the time to get on the river. Good luck dehydrating your meals. I have done a little of that as well lately. Thanks for watching and the kind comments. Take care.
Brother, I do not blame you, I would have been stopping to...such beautiful scenery out there!! AHHH That is sweet of your wife! I would have been tempted to take dip in that lake LOL WOW that Devil's Causeway was something that I did not expect!! Perfect breakfast after that hike! Thanks for such an awesome video!!!!!!!! Loved it!!!!
I am glad you enjoyed the video. It was definitely an awesome trip. Thanks for watching, and take care my friend.
The spot at 30:23 what you called Big Daddy was that actually what is called Clabber Creek, just down from Rush landing?
Yes, I believe that is correct.
@@OutdoorWanderer1 Thank you. A group of us are floating Rush to Ships Ferry this weekend 😁. We have had a lot of rain. Right now the river is a little over 5 1/2 ' . Do you happen to know what it was on your trip?
@@OutdoorWanderer1 Thank you so much for sharing!!!
@@trishlovelace7808 I don't remember the levels on this trip. If you happened to watch my video of the year before, high water levels is nothing to mess around with. The Buffalo Outdoor Center has a website with a river level gauge. It is a good resource with it broken down in to green yellow and red. They are also a great resource to call and talk to if you have questions. They watch the river conditions closely and can give good current advice. I hope things work out for you to have a great trip. Stop back in here and let me know how its goes.
Beautiful places in Colorado that are slowly being ruined by out of state people. Ten years ago you could go anywhere up there and see minimal people. You go up there now on the east side and it’s crowed with hipsters.
Not sure quite how to take your comment. I am from outside the state of Colorado, and would like to think I treated the area with respect . As for people, I always try to go off season and during the week so I can avoid as many people as possible. I saw very few on the trail. I do understand it is getting harder and harder to find solitude these days. We just have to try the best we can, as it is good for the soul. Take care and thanks for visiting the channel.
Are you Ute, Cheyenne, etc? If not maybe check your own privilege? 🤔 😂
Crybaby
I just did this today we went 11.55 miles
Cool. I hope you had fun. It is a neat spot. Take care.
I thought these were real woobies but it seems they are made overseas as multiple companies are selling the same products under different names. I really wanted it but a bit hesitant as these might not be real woobies.
This was a great hike. Completed the 10.3 mile loop two days ago. Most people tackle the steep northern trail first, we did it the opposite way and were glad we did that portion down hill. When I went across first there were people waiting on the other side so we booked across quickly. Wish I had more time to take photos like you did. Excellent work, thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words. It is cool that you got to experience it as well. It is an awesome little loop. Take care!
Thanks for sharing that epic trip!
And thank you for watching. I hope you enjoyed it. It is truly a beautiful place.
Did raccoons get in his snacks?
Yes they did. It is not uncommon to have them come in to camp at night. You definitely have to have things secured. Lol
Awesome video! Can't wait to try it!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. If you end up visiting there let me know what you thought. I thought it was pretty amazing. Take care!
I like the boss battle ish music in the background lol
I was going for dramatic effect. Haha Thanks for watching.
I’m 11 and I’ve been to the Buffalo like 4-5 times
what time of year is this?
It was the last part of April. The springtime is the best opportunity to be able to float from the beginning. Later in the year often times there isn't as much water, and you have to start further down the river.
@@OutdoorWanderer1 thank you, great video
What time of year did you do this trip? I'm guessing June. Great video!
It was Labor Day week. I'm glad you liked the video. Take care.
Planning a trip and was curious how many miles per day or miles per hour did you average?
It tends to vary greatly based on how fast the water is running and how many hours you want to paddle. We would tend to average anywhere from 15 to 30 miles in a day.
Seems like it sits pretty low in the water and you don't seem to be a big buy, and me at 275pds, do you think this would good? I was looking at this boat due to the capacity but am a bit worried now? Thanks
I would say that as long as your body weight plus gear doesn't exceed the max weight listed for the boat, then you would be fine. It sits a little lower than some, but that doesn't change much with added weight. I currently weigh 220 and have had easily in excess of 100 pounds of gear and not had any problems at all. Hope that helps and good luck in your search. Take care.
@@OutdoorWanderer1 I would have barely any gear so maybe 300pds once you add clothes, PFD, paddle etc. Thanks for the reply!
Great video! Short and to the point. Great kit as well. Thank you for the link, I’m ordering one as we speak, hell of a kit set up.
Thank you for the kind words. I am glad you found the information beneficial. Take care.
Great content. I recently bought my first kayak and live in jonesboro, ark. Any advice you can give on good kayaks or kayak equipment would be great. This video definitely deserved my subscrube.
Awesome! Welcome to the world of kayaking. As for advice on kayaks.kayak equipment, that is a pretty broad subject. If you have any specific questions I am not an expert by any means, but I will try and help or offer an opinion if I can. Don't hesitate to ask. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, be safe out there.
