Holy crap, guys camping down low with rain forecast could get you literally floating downstream w/o a paddle...or a boat. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
I am sorry to hear of your back issues. I have experienced that myself. I had surgery about 5 years ago. Honestly, I am more comfortable in my yak than riding in a vehicle. I hope you are able to find things you enjoy given your limitations. I am glad you enjoyed the video! Take care.
Oh my memories back in 2010 I was in bald eagle boys camp In PA and we traveled all the way out there and traveled roughly 130 miles in 3 weeks on the buffalo river/ white river! It was spectacular it was like I was back on the river watching this video!! Nice job!
@@OutdoorWanderer1 Thank you. A group of us are floating Rush to Ships Ferry this weekend 😁. We have had a lot of rain. Right now the river is a little over 5 1/2 ' . Do you happen to know what it was on your trip?
@@trishlovelace7808 I don't remember the levels on this trip. If you happened to watch my video of the year before, high water levels is nothing to mess around with. The Buffalo Outdoor Center has a website with a river level gauge. It is a good resource with it broken down in to green yellow and red. They are also a great resource to call and talk to if you have questions. They watch the river conditions closely and can give good current advice. I hope things work out for you to have a great trip. Stop back in here and let me know how its goes.
I believe it was the last week of April. Your best bet is to try to arrive two days after a moderate rainfall in mid to late April. Nights can still be a little cool and rain is common this time of year but the trees have just begun to leaf out in their spring green and the day time temps are warm and there are not a lot of bugs out yet.
Wow that was fun to watch. Really was an excellent video. Looks like you guys had a great adventure. Amazing how much you packed in your Loon 126. I'm amazed you had 6 days worth of stuff.
I appreciate the kind comments, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The ol' Loon will hold quite a bit. I even packed more on the trip the year before. What I have found is that it will carry plenty of weight, but it is more nimble and more responsive the lighter I can keep the gear.
whoa , the wildest run i have seen so far. i was trying to do the upper river this spring and kinda glad i didnt get to cuz seems some rough water. class 3 ? which month was that ?
This was in April. There are a few sections that can have rough water, but for the most part it is an awesome paddle. It is very weather dependent. Hope you are able to experience it some time. Thanks for watching.
That is a little difficult to say. It depends on water levels and how many miles you want to cover in a day. I will say. it is my opinion that the upper section starting at Ponca is more scenic and the technical aspects of the water are more fun as well. Hope you have a great time :)
Scotty Vanbrunt Honestly, I'm not sure. I love it there, but there are so many places on my list of trips I want to take. So little time.... 😀Thanks for watching!
Great content. I recently bought my first kayak and live in jonesboro, ark. Any advice you can give on good kayaks or kayak equipment would be great. This video definitely deserved my subscrube.
Awesome! Welcome to the world of kayaking. As for advice on kayaks.kayak equipment, that is a pretty broad subject. If you have any specific questions I am not an expert by any means, but I will try and help or offer an opinion if I can. Don't hesitate to ask. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, be safe out there.
Just wondering. Why do yall use sit in yaks up there instead of sit on tops? We use sit on tops in rougher Rapids. Just wondering. Brother lives up close too there. Thinking about trying to get up there to do some of that river. Fishing any good?
Thanks for watching! I would say kayak choice is all about personal preference. One of the guys we normally go with does use a sit on top and really likes it. As for me, I do some colder weather kayaking too and like the added wind protection. I also just feel more in control sitting lower in the water. Like I said, mostly just personal preference. As for fishing, I haven't done any fishing on the Buffalo, so I can't speak to that. I hope you can make it up there, It is a beautiful place!
Sit inside kayaks are generally more stable in rougher water and more maneuverable. Sit on top usually have a pontoon type of hull underneath which is very stable as long as your weight stays between the pontoons. Which is great for a fishing kayak because as long as you stay within those pontoons standing doesnt dramatically effect its stability. Sit inside kayaks usually have a V shaped hull which allows you to lean the kayak on edge and still have some stability. So as long as you take waves head on the difference between sitin/on top isnt to different. But the moment you have to change angle, lets say to avoid a rock or log in the middle of rapids its much trickier to stay stable in a sit on top because you will be leaned over to the side more.
A person could. One of the guys I was with this year used one off and on. I never really looked into one for my yak, because it would cover up my little deck hatch and I am in and out of there alot. It is a consideration. Thanks.
Great video! We have a group doing 60 miles over Memorial Day weekend from Ponca to Baker Ford. We would love to do the hike to Hemmed in Hollow. Any idea how many miles out of Ponca that is and if there are any clear signs of where to pull off and start the hike? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It tends to vary greatly based on how fast the water is running and how many hours you want to paddle. We would tend to average anywhere from 15 to 30 miles in a day.

Haha. Thanks for the concern, but I'm perfectly fine. I work in the medical field, and have annual wellness exams and bloodwork done. Other than being a few pounds overweight and maybe not doing as much cardio as I should, there isn't anything wrong. Having the camera right under my chin makes it sound worse than it really is. Again, thanks for looking out for me and for watching. Take care :)
On my bucket list for 5 years, im doing it this year but breaking it up over a course of all summer. April 1st is our first day!!
