PROJECT Tamiya TD-2: Track Test
I intend to make a more detailed video when this project is completed but the short version is that I wanted to see if I could make my Tamiya buggy more competitive against the other race cars from big brands at my local track.
I loved the unique inboard suspension of the TD2 but it was a limiting factor because it was very challenging to tune. In this project I have re-designed the front end to have a more conventional shock setup, but the car remains distinctively Tamiya - and besides, the original Astute (after which this buggy is named) also has stand-up shocks.
This is the very first test of the buggy at the track with fragile prototype parts - but it held up well and proved that the concept had potential.
I can now make some new parts out of carbon fiber and also refine the car's design and setup further. :)
Thanks for watching.

Just a short video of a Tamiya BBX buggy that I just completed running on the local astro-turf track. Tamiya has made a very unique buggy that is extremely enjoyable to drive. It isn't going to be beating any race-bred buggies, but it actually handles very well and provides a very unique driving experience. It feels a bit like driving a real car because the car requires more careful throttle an...

The Losi LMT handles surprisingly well on the basher dirt track. Having driven race buggies on the track a bit, driving a monster truck is a rather different experience but I think the LMT exhibits very impressive handling out of the box - no doubt the 3-diff setup and the decent stock tires really helps. Thanks for the input. Typically FF buggies need the weight closer to the front for drive traction... but as you have mentioned, the trade-off is the tendency to nose-dive.

    Hmmm, a modern buggy that comes with body and wheels and appears to be a quality product is tempting. I need a buggy for high grip tracks as my hb d216 doesn’t handle them so well (diff issues). Ausrab industries is the distributor in Australia, hopefully they stay on top of parts support.

    • @marklim7851
      @marklim7851 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The PR buggies are certainly the most under-rated racing cars. They are refined, robust and spares are typically very well-priced. The only question is whether you have a source for parts support where you are at. :)

      Thank you. This car is certainly one that has special meaning for me in my 'garage' of project cars. While I've grown to appreciate cab-forward bodies over time, I'll choose a mid or rear cab design anyday. :)

      Hi there, this is a dedicated 1/10 track. Sadly it has gradually been converted to feature more astro-turf because dirt is so hard to maintain. Always appreciate your track owners I say. :)

  • @Drunken_Hamster
    @Drunken_Hamster 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I agree with you on the mid and rear cab bodies looking nicer. As far as your design goes, Schumacher has done a belt drive with forward motor in some of their buggies. IDR if they were as far forward as yours, however. In any case, consider looking into either a 2-idler gear or 4-idler gear transmission so that you can get the motor spinning the same way as the tires. This should add gyroscopic inertia, as well as increase inertial torque which will make mid-air control more responsive and possibly cause the rear to squat down/plant the tires a little more for higher grip. Another thing I want to see someone try is to have a REAR motor car, but with all the other electronics mounted as far forward as possible (without going AHEAD of the axle, except the servo, which can be between the shock tower) with a transverse batter that's ALSO far forward. The idea would be to get approximately the same or similar overall weight distribution as a mid-motor car but to increase the torque lever at the rear axle by having the mass of the motor behind it. The intention of this is to improve rotation/turn in responsiveness.

    • @marklim7851
      @marklim7851 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. Based on my understanding, the motor in my buggy is slightly further forward than the Schumacher buggy you are referring to (I love Schumacher designs btw). 4-gear vs 3-gear transmissions are such an interesting discussion - both offer unique pros and cons. Over time, I've personally come to prefer 3-gear setup on high grip tracks exactly because of the reduced weight transfer. The cars stay flatter over acceleration - but importantly during braking - for stability in corners. The 4-gear cars can give great acceleration out of corners, but on braking can make the steering come on fast and hard. All in the setup I suppose. A rear-motor car with forward electronics sounds interesting. Thanks for the interesting project idea! :)

      @marklim7851 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think as with most race buggies today the kit was designed primarily with higher grip surfaces in mind. It doesn't mean it won't work on dirt, but I think it would take some setup especially on the shock package and the tires. PR does offer a ball diff which will help tremendously on dirt. The V3 had won our local nationals on a dirt track, so it is possible. :)

      Hey there, thanks for the comment. You are spot on that the KF sported a layout with similarities to my project car, and the KC that came after allowed even more motor positions - I always appeciate how Schumacher has their unique design philosophies. :) I compared my car with a friend's KC and the two key differences were that the Yokomo transmission is a hybrid belt-gear system and that the central transmission on my buggy is slightly further forward.

    Awesome video. How do you address putting shock oil in the tiny shocks.. I believe it will lessen the articulation in the axles. Am I wrong or is it beneficial to add oil to these shocks. Just curious sir

    • @marklim7851
      @marklim7851 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think adding oil to the shocks can only be a good thing... the only downside is if they leak. To do so you'll use the O-rings provided in the box. I haven't done it yet though so I can't really say much more... though I've seen those who have done so. It won't lessen articulation but will reduce the 'bouncing' effect which can upset crawling... though at this scale it may not matter quite that much. :)

      I've found the fit, finish and durability to be as good, if not better than the top brands in the market. Actually, the durability ranks among the top. Where it may be lacking as a smaller brand is the trackside setup knowledge since there may not be as many people running it. I've seen that PR also continues to refine its cars so they are committed to producing performance buggies.

    I'm thinking about buying one of these, as I already have PR SB401-R.

      How is your experience with the 401-R? In my opinion the V4 delivers a similar package in terms of fit, finish and quality. If you do get one, there is also a benefit of some parts that are shared across both platforms. :)

      @@marklim7851 I really like the 401, like you said the build quality is really good, everything fits perfectly.

    Old school body looks great lol. I am watching this video because I am trying to learn more about pr I run 2wd 4wd buggy and sct and am thinking of changing over to there stuff for all of it. What is your opinion on there products now that you run it for awhile? Are you happy with the overall of there products? Thanks in advance

      Hey there, thanks for the kind comment on my old school body. lol! :) In terms of performance, build and quality I have no complaints whatsoever with PR products. I've had different versions of their buggies and can honestly say they have always had a commitment to improving their cars - the latest versions of their 2WD and 4WD are really the result of years of refinement. The cars are extremely durable and also have proven themselves on the track many times. The cars are very adjustable and IMO have all the necessary adjustments for racing, BUT compared to some of the more established brands they may lack some of the more obscure setting options. However, depending on where you are located, I have heard that some racers have had challenges with local distributors and that can result in issues getting parts - so you may want to ensure you have a reliable source to turn to if you are going to race regularly. Finally, the V4 pricing makes it one of the most affordable racing platforms on the market. Hopefully the info here helps you make a decision.

      @@marklim7851 Hey thanks for the info and the quick response. I think you may have sold me a buggy at the price I'm gonna buy 1 and see how it goes. All my shopping for parts is online only hobbystore near me is on the traxxas train and that's pretty much it. I am racing all kyosho right now only problem is that it's all old and really hard to find parts and there new stuff is to high. Thanks again and good luck racing
