Rescuing a 1972 GMC from a field

I bought an abandoned GMC pickup that had sat in a field for about 15 years. It had been stripped of just about everything. I bought a motor on the cheap, rebuilt the brakes, rewired the truck, bought gauges, wheels/tires, windshield and a seat. Now I'm rolling down the road in it! GM Vortec 4.3L backfire and locking up

Vortec motor acted like it was locking up out the timing was severely off. It missed, sputtered, backfired and died upon acceleration. We replaced the radiator hose to stop the coolant leak, and one other part to fix our problem! Check out this short video to find out how!

Hammer drill bit stuck in the drill Harbor Freight brand
You know, not too long ago, most of you guys use to be like; Harbor Freight is crappy, they only have cheap stuff etc. Now look at y'all trendy buzzards...
Where can you find these adaptors
Thanks Fred this helped me fix my customers car!
Thank you
I have 2 of these. good little saws, I keep one in the vehicle all the time.
Great to know you can get adaptor for battery packs. Do you have a site?
I bought mine off ebay from this store: www.ebay.com/str/lighting79xq?_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l161211 there are others all over Amazon and Ebay
WE LOVE YOU FRED!!!!!
that greasy engine and the big nut as a spacer on the header flange is as ugly as any thing
do you suppose the clown that put the chinesium pulley on the pump could have put in a too long bolt , you can bet that pulley didnt come from the assembly line.
Great job and you did it yourself
Yes Dale thanks, almost a complete one-man show over her from pasture to paint!
Most people don't remember or even knew that older vehicles a full brake job included cleaning and repacking the wheel bearings and cutting the rotors if necessary.... I still use xylene as the solvent to clean the bearings it melts all the old grease off fast.. On our economy brake jobs we would remove the outer bearing then install the nut and washer this would remove the rear wheel bearing and seal by pulling on the rotor straight out and not damage the seal so we could reuse it.. The nut and washer would catch the bearing and push out the seal...just for customers on a tight budget mostly older people..... The new sealed bearings barley make it to 100k I have Timken roller bearings from 1975 that are still in great shape.... But hey Timken cut their teeth making bearings for trains! 😂
You are right, those old Timken bearings were tough! Thanks for watching and also the added good advice!
Nice truck!
Thanks!
Nice l
Thanks!
Looks far better than the one that came outta the field. 👍😉
Thanks John!
I wanted to do that for some many years. But now I am doing a Ls3/6L80E in a 03' Crown Vic Police Interceptor. It's a project with my grandkids.
Nothing better than having grandkids interested in the hobby!
@fredtalks-diyfortheaverage9298 Yes sir!!! We have to get the next generations interested other the hobby will go away.
Do u have a list of the parts u needed to order? I have started to order the kit which comes with everything buy the intake and fuel injection
He bought an edelbrock 2114 manifold and bungs. Drilled out for the bungs and added the external injectors. He also had to make a plate since he kept the factory throttle body. He did say that he might build some of these intake/fuel kits if there was enough interest.
Dude I believe I can do it and plan to do it. I will more than likely use the marine intake though. I have an awd bravada. I don't know much about the ecm but I will learn. This is almost exactly my plan.
Good luck. I think he went the edelbrock route because the marine intakes were much more expensive and are heavy cast iron. He is learning on they fly how to tune so it can be done!
Very enjoyable video, thanks for the explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice
Nice
Just subscribed. We have several of those 67 thru 72 trucks. I like the GMC's because they have leaf springs in the rear.
Thanks for subscribing! This one has the five lug wheel with front disc brakes. Too rough to restore so I’ll just “refurbish” it a little bit. I use it around the farm. Always starts right up!
👍🤠
👍🤠
Was gonna mention is there water in the crankcase but you got it covered. 👍🤠
Thanks, you never know what a guy might forget.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! It worked like you said. Easy to pop that bit out.
Even he admits at start ford is trash 😂
This principle is easy 8th grade science class....yes it will work but you do need a larger recovery tank so you can also do brake flushes with out constantly emptying the tank....a larger tank let's say a 35 gallon plastic barrel can be used to empty a gas tank so you can replace an in tank fuel pump by dropping a empty tank or nearly empty on bigger trucks.... More people should have paid attention in 8th grade science class 😂😂😂
If anyone even ask how you control it they are a bozo. I will be making this as a professional mechanic apprentice
I seen air bubbles movin in the right direction. Yep! Do it again Mister! 👍🤓
its works. Thank you
Absolute genius thank you so much😎
What is the metal prep you mentioned osbo?
I think he meant Ospho.
Thanks! I couldn't quite use your method as my bit got wider for a 1.5 inch hole. But I was able to use a similar thought to clamp a vise grip, then an adjustable wrench to pry it off. Once out I didn't measure a difference in bit width, but seemed just a bit thicker on 2 sides. I filed it a bit and it's smooth. I will also try some lubricant, grease, or penetrant when changing bits. It seems to be the heat and tough work that makes them stick.
Thank you for the information!
Thank you for the video! Although it was hard to see, I now feel like I can do it. Just gotta get it home first. It died in a parking lot after my son and I had dinner, waited 4 hrs+ for AAA and being a super bowl Sunday they never found us a tow. Had to Lyft home. I was concerned it would be much more difficult but after seeing this I feel good about working on it myself 🙏🏼
Great video! Thank you
Am I missing something with the vehicle you made this video with?
lame ass video that shows no pre loads procedure or else complete garbage of a mechanic!
Once I removed the metal half circle pin above the collar, I could see that the bit cleared the ball bearings and was simply stuck in the barrel. The bit was a cheap item from Amazon, three inch wide but short. Other bits slide in and out of the barrel fine. I learned two lessons, one is to buy good bits, two is to grease the bit.
the title got my attention. E series were for vans Econoline. F series were the pick-ups. This is a cross. Definitely a van front
I'm gonna try that.... I was going to go on an errand, it was idling then it suddenly stopped and now it just cracks.
Thanks for this video. You just saved me almost $300 for a diagnostic fee.
What type of grease do you use in that drill? I think I have the same one I'm not sure what type to get
I have major vapor lock on my 79 F150 with a 460. I bought the same filter and I’m going to do the same thing with the existing charcoal canister line. Someone removed the canister but left the line, so it should be an easy mod. This truck will stall out, especially on a hill - it’s really bad. Glad to hear it cured your vapor lock. Have a great day and have fun driving that classic gal!
How’s the carburetor holding I have a 1961 Econoline and I’m looking to replace my carburetor
Did you remove the pan that directs air to the radiator? I have a feeling one would help.
No, it was missing when I got the truck. I am going to make one for it because I do believe that it is integral to an overall effective cooling system.
If you need help Saturday let me know
Thank you for the video! Making my day easy! Got a coworker who had a water pump go bad and already had a starter issue and wants it fixed.
