"Carpenters: The Musical Legacy" — An Evening with Richard Carpenter (1080p)
On Saturday, April 27, 2024, I was joined by friend and mentor, Richard Carpenter, to discuss our recently published book (coauthored with Mike Cidoni Lennox, who was unable to attend the discussion) as part of the closing festivities for the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Downey, CA. This was followed by a formal proclamation and presentation to Richard by the mayor of the city of Downey, Mario Trujillo, as well as a plaque dedication, presented by Carpenters fan Erin Gatlin on behalf of fans from around the globe. Incidentally, Richard's appearance was kept a surprise until we walked out on stage, making this a most memorable evening.

CARPENTERS: Q&A, Ep. 4: A Conversation with Gayle Levant & Earle Dumler
มุมมอง 3.8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Episode four features a candid interview with friends Gayle Levant and Earle Dumler. Gayle is heard on virtually every Carpenters album with the sound of her unmistakably lush harp, and Earle with his emotionally gut-wrenching oboe and English horn. Here they share a few of their favorite stories from the Carpenters years, as well as a few anecdotes related to the countless artists and major mo...
CARPENTERS: Q&A, Ep. 3: "We've Only Just Begun"
มุมมอง 4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In episode three, I talk in-depth about how the Carpenters' sound evolved during the early years, also giving a track-by-track vocal illustration taken directly from the original master tape of "We've Only Just Begun." But first, I answer a couple of questions submitted by fans related to an unreleased recording of "Thank You For The Music," as well as Richard's ownership of the Carpenters tele...
SoCal Scene: "Celebrating The Legacy of the Carpenters"
มุมมอง 15K2 ปีที่แล้ว
It has been almost 40 years since the death of Karen Carpenter, but the music she and her brother, Richard, produced is still beloved around the world. Their story played out around Southern California and a new book documents it all. Spectrum News 1 journalist Tara Lynn Wagner visited Downey, where the duo went to high school, and stopped by Richard’s current home in Thousand Oaks, to trace th...

CARPENTERS: Q&A, Ep. 2: "A Kind of Hush" (Album)
มุมมอง 3.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In episode two, I talk about the Carpenters' seventh studio album, "A Kind of Hush," and how many of the songs were selected-including some nuggets of trivia related to several of them. Also, Richard personally explains the story behind the title track, here in his own words. But first, I address the question that many fans have asked over the years related to Karen's "work" lead vocals, and ho...

มุมมอง 3.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In episode one, I answer a couple of questions submitted by folks on the A&M Corner, "Carpenters" forum. More specifically, I talk about the original demo recordings submitted to Herb Alpert which ultimately got the Carpenters their record deal, and how those recordings contrast with the final master recordings heard on their debut album, "Offering." I also address the issue related to a number...

Let me guess. Because of side 2's length, cassettes had to fill out side 1 with a short edit. Couldn't Richard just put in an unreleased cut?
The tone from that piano was so good
RICHARD needs JESUS ! so he can have closure . and make music with Karen in eternity with the MASTER ...
How much I wished I was there! Good wishes for Richard from Texas.
My very favorite of all time!! ❤
There's a point during the interview where you can see Richard trying to keep himself from getting choked up. Her death still haunts him to this day and unfortunately he lives with the regret he should have done things differently to save her life such as staging a family intervention. There's no denying Richard's gifts as an arranger, but Karen was the heart and soul of the Carpenters
Devastating loss, and for devastating reason. I still cry when I think of it.
Should be in hall of fame they serve it
I remember when "Close to You" came out and hearing it for the first time on the car radio. The reason I remember is because Karen's voice had me riveted from the start. It was gorgeous.
The Wizard of Oz was a flop when it came out. None of the studio execs wanted A Charlie Brown Christmas to air until somebody fought for it. And now, where are those Carpenter critics? This goes to show you that great art can face adversity from all sides. Stick to your guns, do what you enjoy. And hopefully, it breaks through.
I would love to read the book
Love them forever
How I wish I could have been in that room
I'll always love them
I remember when i was given that first Carpenter record back in the seventies. I played it so many times and sang along. They both were timeless
And... Thank you, Downey, CA for appreciating The Carpenters for weaving their divine thread into our human tapestry...
Thank you, Sir Richard... And thank you, Lady Mary, for loving this beloved man...
I have purchased several copies of this outstanding book... Thank you all involved...
"Few are the choices we are given. The sands of time pass quickly by." Thank you, Richard and Karen... Love, from Dallas, Texas...
Happy Birthday John Bettis!❤🎉 10-24-24.I will always love your lyrics.Thank You! Love You John!❤
What a wonderfully detailed interview! Just as I thought all along...Karen, Richard & John were/are perfectionists and it was reflected in every song they produced. When I would bring home a new Carpenters record, I would listen to it multiple times, zeroing in on the lyrics, each of the instrumental parts and vocal harmonies. No other artists could make music like these people.
The bible of Carpenter's books, I always give out copies of The Carpenter's Legacy to people. I know that Karen would approve of this one.
Its because the drums make her happiest
Those early hits just stayed on the charts for so long that they delayed the next hit. And ‘Those Good Old Dreams’ was a great song.
What a good dude! I think it is really cool to see Richard like this -- getting to talk about the music. I am sure he enjoys these types of discussions more than anything else -- because it is about the music and not his sisters illness. It is obvious that he has a very high opinion of Karen --- and a ton of respect for her talent. He has obviously received some cheap shots/hard questions about how things shook down. They were both really young when Karen died ... the earth has turned quite a few times since then. He is pretty freaking funny! Happy for him to get to talk to a group like this.
Great interview
For years I've been talking about the three pre-Carpenters versions of "Close To You" by Richard Chamberlin, Dusty Springsfield and Dionne Warwick. Glad to hear that somebody was reading what I'd been saying. I am the guy who dug out the Magic Lamp single by Karen. When I met them in 1976 Karen said she had never recorded any such thing, but I knew better. It's a shame because their Magic Lamp era has been mainly shunted aside when it's a really cool story and would have given them some more creditability. Herb Albert also did an early version of "Close To You", but never released it. He gave it to the Carpenters after that.
Connecticut thru and thru... Hal Blaine (Hartford) and the Carpenters (New Haven)

Are they not in the music hall of fame? They definitely should be! There music is outstanding!!
Chris, here's a video I put together a few years ago. It combines my love of Carpenters, The Poseidon Adventure, gay pride and responsible drinking -- which for many, many people isn't going to happen on New Year's "Eve, I can't believe." th-cam.com/video/yMbbV8rpcgc/w-d-xo.html
Man, I eat this stuff for breakfast, lunch, dinner & a midnight snack. If there's any way you can continue dissecting their close harmonies I would so appreciate it, e.g., the song I mention below: "Don't Be Afraid." oxox
Let's not forget richard
My heart goes out to him as he's still in pain. He is a musical genius and was overlooked back in the day.
It's strange that pianist Jack Daugherty is never mentioned here. Jack DISCOVERED the Carpenters & introduced them to Herb Alpert at A&M & then became their Producer there. Jack introduced me to Hal who played drums in Jack's rehearsal band at A&M. Jack was a very significant element during the Carpenters early days!!! 😮
Not quite accurate, with all due respect. Jack was a trumpet player who was given the Carpenters' demo. However, it was John Pisano (with Herb's TJB) that gave the demo to Herb and Jerry. Jack was credited as "producer," however he never actually produced them. He contracted studio musicians for a number of the sessions and ultimately fulfilled the role of an assistant. Herb has even recently confirmed that Richard was the actual producer on every Carpenters record.
"He said- she said." ...I always knew Jack as a piano player & worked many gigs with him. Never saw him with a trumpet. He often invited me to A&M studio to listen to the Carpenters rehearse the tunes THAT HE WAS PRODUCING! l can only say what is true for me or what i personally witnessed back then.
Thank you Richard and Karen! You will always be loved❤❤❤
Please, please, please do more work with her. For me, this is a vocal masterpiece and the production is exquisite. It's so incredibly beautiful. Thank you.
its since been said she didnt die from anorexia , but some other underlaying condition
Dionne Warwick is a name brand singer - amazing the Carpenters made that song a monster hit when Warwick didn't.
Richard is a musical genius and Karen that Voice absolute perfection, still today the people on this panel except for Chris were still snooty about the Carpenters giving his editors of this piece the credit instead of Richard and Karen smh why haven't the Carpenters gotten the Kennedy center honors hmmmm ? I think we know why .
I met Richard in 1983 when he was in the UK to promote Voice Of The Heart. A real gentleman. He signed my Made In America album that is still on my wall now.
Wow, I'm jealous!
@@renarga6886 A lovely memory but sad that he was here by himself.
Tengo muchos vinilos de ellos, una pena el fallecimiento de Karen 🙏 Icónicos ⭐❤️
Eating disorders weren’t understood then. I had niece die 20 years later at same age of this disease and she had similar treatment but damage to heart could not be fixed. I am sure Karen was the same. I was anorexic for 6 years and pregnancy helped change that direction but even at 77 I am still conscious of my weight and what I eat an won’t have scale in my house. I also make a point to wear the lightest clothing and remove my shoes when I get weighed at doctor. I loved what you both did. Although her voice was amazing, your song arrangements were masterful. Buddy Holly, Neil Diamond and John Denver were also good in that area.
I will always love "Passage." It was such an opus, a tapestry of musical styles and exploration. I have it on all formats and I still play the reel to reel often.
WHAT A TREAT! I noticed there's tension, too, in their early song in C-major, "Don't be Afraid." Whilst the C-major chord descends regularly down the scale, there's an F, E and D that lag behind.
"Close to You" was the number one song when I was born. My mother said she sang it to me when it was on the radio which was often.
I love all their songs, still listening to the music. Such a Great, Great loss. They were beautiful together and will always be in everyones hearts forever!
