The Everyday Astrophotographer. Here to share the wonders of space from the comfort of my garden.
Introducing my new ASIair Pro from ZWO.
Hey everyone, sorry it's been so long since I've posted a video. As Joni Mitchell once famously said, Clouds got in my way!
I've added an ASIair Pro to my second setup, and in this video I just wanted to have a quick look at how it fits into my rig and how the software works. Stay until the end for a couple of images that I have managed to take with it so far!

How To Stack Monochrome RGB and SHO Images in DeepSkyStacker (DSS): Part 1 - DSS
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone, it's been a while! I've been using my QHY268M for a few months now and, early on, I was getting really frustrated when my images wouldn't line up after stacking. Now I have the easy solution to that problem, and in this video I will share with you how I process my mono images in DSS. This will work for RGB, SHO, HOO or any other combination your heart desires! In the next video we...
NINA - Part 5: The Image Sequence
มุมมอง 4.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone, it's time to dive into the image sequence in NINA. This is where you tell NINA what type of images you want to take, with what filter, for how long and the other settings you want it to use. NINA will slew, centre, autofocus and change filters in a preset way that you have set meaning you can be an Everyday astronomer and maximise both your imaging time - and your sleep! Clear ski...
Nina - Part 4: Sky Atlas and Framing Assistant
มุมมอง 7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone, today we're gong to take a quick peek at the sky atlas and framing assistant in NINA. One point of note - in order for the image to display, you will need and internet connection - they are not stored locally on NINA. The Sky Atlas provides you with information about your chosen target - or if you don't know what you want to image, it will help you select something within a range ...
NINA - Part 3: Settings and Customisation
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone, working out the settings for a new bit of software can be decidedly frustrating. In this video I'll walk through the settings I use and that work for me (and you'll have to ignore the deliberate mistake between absolute and overshoot!). Whilst these settings may not be perfect for you, they will at least give you a starting point from which to build. I will also walk through how t...
NINA - Part 2: Connecting Your Equipment to NINA
มุมมอง 11K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone, thanks for joining me in part two of my NINA tutorial. In this video we are going to look at how I connect all my equipment together, power it all and get the data back to the laptop so it can talk to NINA. Then we'll connect each item one at a time and look at what information we can get about the different bits of kit. We will also have a first look at some of the settings you w...
QHY268M - Part 4: First Light!
มุมมอง 2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone - I finally have a working set of drivers for the camera and filter wheel so was able to get some proper first light with my QHY268M. Join me as we look at the quality of the claims that QHY make (zero amp glow), the lack of cleaning quality and a single uncalibrated light frame of NGC7822. #QHY268M #Astrophotography
NINA - Part 1: Overview and Navigation
มุมมอง 21K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone, I love NINA. I think it's awesome. I also know that switching from software you know and love can be a painful and frustrating experience, leading many of us to never try new things. I'm also guilty of that! But I think you just have to try NINA. So in this series, I will walk you through how I use NINA, how to navigate the system, what settings work for me and how to get everythi...
My 2021 Astro Software
มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
HI everyone - following our look at my imaging setups for 2021, a few people have asked about the software that I use. Aimed at beginners, but also to draw comments and tips from more experienced astrophotographers, this is a look at the software that I will be using in 2021, and a quick nod to those that I intend to try out through the year - mainly PixInsight and Affinity Photo. Links to all ...
My 2021 Astrophotography Setup
มุมมอง 2.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone, in this video we'll take a look at how my astrophotography setup is going to look for the next 12 months. For some reason, I have always planned the year ahead in April and this year is no different. With new cameras, filters and magical power boxes new in the kit list, as well as running two rigs with dedicated astro cameras for the first time - let's jump in and see how it's all...

NINA - Part 6 - How to take Flat Frames (Flats Wizard)
You should put all 3 screws in each filter to prevent tilt and problems with distorted stars.
Thanks you so Mach man
Thanks for the video. Can I ask where the images are saved for later processing. Thanks
Great video series. Can you connect a dslr to nina?
What is your blue box usb hub thing?
Matt, What is the advantage using the ASIAIR Pro over NINA ? I have the ZWOASI533-mc PRO camera, and the ZWO EAF Focuser. Using SV503 70mm ED Refractor. w/0.8x field flatener /reducer. I have lately just started using NINA. However, I'm seriously looking at the ASIAIR. I don't have ipad, I would use my iphone 14plus. Problem with that is, I'm concerned about the iphone screen size. I'm used to using my Laptop with NINA. Your input greatly appreciated sir ! Thanks for sharing this video.
Matt, I'm newbie using NINA. Thanks for explaining the procedure. I struggled with this last night. For my life, I could not make it work properly. I will take heed of this and try it again later. Great instructional video sir ! Thank you so much!
This is HUGE. Just got the 2600MM camera for Deep Sky and needed to figure out how to do this, as I am only used to using the 2600MC version. Clear, concise and not a lot of fluff! Thanks!
What software is free though ?
That was fantastic. Very easy to understand and follow. Awesome work
You left one thing out and that is what kind of image you used to start with!? Was this a stacked image or just a one shot image? And do you know the expoosure time, iso, etc.? Thanks.
How do you connect the Pegasus Powerbox to nina
how to deal with DSLR exposure? They are mostly much faster. Normally you do astrophotography (lights) at ISO800/1600. If we make flats at those ISOs, exposure are way below 1 second.
tnx for all your videos! thats what i needed ! what is the name of the cable from the pc to the mount please?
Really great set of Tutorials. many thanks for making these Matt, they are very helpful.
I am confused as to how to start a sequence. Once I have polar alignment, do I have to park the mount back home before loading a sequence or does Nina know where the scope is currently pointed at any given time?
Absolutely brilliant. You made this very steep learning curve a lot less painful, thank you.
I just finished the same procedure. Same camera but with Astrodon 50 mm filters. I had to use the largest screws and washers. The filters are a tiny bit undersized for the opening and only the largest washers would work. And with my shaky hands, using gloves to hold the tiny screws was a challenge. Eventually gave up on the rubber gloves and chanced it. All worked out well though. Waiting a few days to get the scope out. There's a 30 mph wind blowing and it's currently around 25 F outside. I used to brave the cold when I was around 30. Now I'm 65. Waiting for it to warm up.
Qhy heard the complaints about removing the ring on the front of the camera. The lens cap no longer covers the tiny screws. So the sensor stays covered when removing the screws
Consider switching to a 30 amp Anderson power pole capable power supply and a power pole hub. Most 12 v power plugs are 5.5 x 2.1 or 2.5 mm plugs. Amazon sells those assemblies at a reasonably price. No more cigarette lighter plugs or glass fuses.
Just received mine. Got the large filter wheel since I have 50 mm Astrodon filters already. Going to put it all together. But with 12 F temperatures and a 30mph wind predicted, I’m waiting a few days to set it all up. Going to mount it on a C9.25 xlt with a Lepus .62 reducer. Mount will be a g11 with Gemini 2 system. Been imaging for 22 years now, but switching from Maxim 5 to Nina and Pixinsight. New world to me!
Is it the QHYCFW3M? That are the threads on both sides? Is it all 54mm on both sides? Or 48-54 combo?
Thanks!!!
Thank you for video, I was using t-shirt, gonna try with papers however I changed my my settings for 294MC pro to %30 - %30 and NINA did not changed it automatically, left as it is on each session. I will try new 50-10 values tonight.
I could not see how the spacers fitted my QHY533M, which turned out to be for a larger filter wheel. Poor instructions too gave an impression that otherwise sturdy construction, and good cameras were let down by poor attention to details (such as protection of the sensor as you have noted here). Thanks for a very interesting video 👍
You may want to color and emphasize the mouse arrow on the screen. I have a brand new 64” smart tv and sitting 17’ from it is is very difficult to follow your speedy dialogue and movements to the next selection. I am not criticizing you. I am new to this endeavor and appreciate the time and dedication you have given to producing these tutorials. Being tutorials you must understand that we don’t understand yet what to do next. I watch two videos and my eyes are tired!
The information you cover is very resourceful and you know your stuff - but - you talk way too fast with some unnecessary rambling. Take a breath and slow down - this is supposed to be a tutorial, not a race.
Thanks for a brilliant tutorial. I'm currently setting NINA in my observatory. It's my first time using the new version of NINA and have been away from astronomy for some time. I've followed your settings step-by-step as it's a good starting point for me to tweak as a want.
Those pegasus power boxes are so expensive!!! I bought A J5 create 7 port USB hub and Ran 1 long wire to my laptop and have 7 USB 3.0 ports that are even able to power dewheaters for 32 bucks. I used 4 non damaging sticky wall hanger backs( just the tape) that have double sided adhesive, able to hold .5 of a pound each. Pegasus power box? Costs Over $250 usd.
No kidding. I found its inclusion a super- expensive and frankly unnecessary distraction in an otherwise wonderful tutorial. Same with filter wheels and focusers which I'd suggest should come rather later on given that most of us tyros are just getting started and don't have these devices.
Excellent videos. I'm switching from Nebulosity as it doesn't handle dithering very well and has no plate solving. I am wondering if PHD2 needs special settings from NINA to do a meridian flip? Thank YOU!
Yes! This video is the best! Should be in everyone's playlist.
Great Video!! Is there a way to connect DSLR to NINA ?
When you take the photos using the 3 filter types do you take them right after each other? 2 hrs filter 1 then 2 hrs filter 2 and then 2 hrs filter 3. The stars will be in different locations in the sky for the 3 filter types. Are you concerned about the quality difference depending on how much atmosphere the 3 set of photos are taken though. Would it be better to take 40 min filter 1 then 40 min filter 2 then 40 min filter 3 and then repeat that 3 times? I'm thinking about switching to a mono camera. Thank you for sharing this as I use DSS also.
I dont think it matters after stacking
Good video, but could you consider removing your inset when showing the UI. It covers parts of the screen you’re explaining. Hearing your voice and watching your mouse is enough.
Such a good series. Thanks Matt. That really helped. I'm not ready to do this yet because I'm doing my imaging with a camera cand lens setup. But now I understand - if only vaguely - how this works. I guess watching it a few more times will help it sink in.
Awesome video. How does NINA compare to SGP? I’m trying to decide. I see people using one or the other. I subscribed so I can learn more
Would NINA be a good choice for EAA?
Clear, concise and short. Tonight will be my first "all up" test of my new rig--been very cloudy and rainy lately. This is the final piece to the puzzle of an effective night of shots for me. Thanks!!!
Thanks for the quick overview!
I can’t for the life of me get my eq6 pro to connect to Nina. Which drivers do I need? Setup in eqascom toolbox? Then what?
Very good video. Could you make a short video on which software you installed and in what order? Thank you
Where is guiding step? Where is guiding calibration step? Where is plate solving? Where is meridian flip? Tutorial is incomplete and not very good.
Video is short. You could add how to go to target how to plate solve and how establish camera angle. It seems clear, but not so for beginners.
Everyone tells you astrophotography has a steep learning curve. No one tells you the hardest part is researching and sourcing all the necessary parts to get proper backfocus.
Guiding setting is confusing. Guiding is done by PHD2. Are there numbers for PHD2?
Hi , what to do , just started with NINA but my sky atlas doesn't show any photos , thanks
Thanks a lot for your NINA tutorials. Im just on astro vaccation on Corse island and Im re-learning to use NINA instead of SharpCap. Really helpful.
What great educational videos these are for learning and understanding NINA. Perfect. Thanks so much. I appreciate you doing small bite size videos as I had seen another channel where it was too much to take in... leaving me putting off learning the NINA till a future date. You certainly know the best way to present the info without scaring me away. Again thanks so much.
Matt, i have a couple of issues when i select an object in sky atlas it never pulls through an image. & my plate solver always says not enough starts I am based in Yorkshire UK. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
I am struggling to get the plate solving working have you got a tutorial on plate solving with Nina thank u in advance
