Old but Electrified
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 ม.ค. 2018
'Old but Electrified' is what I have finally become. Old age is a privilege not granted to everyone, but to handle it successfully I had to get an eBike. My cycling was seriously starting to be affected by that heart attack and subsequent triple by-pass operation, and more recently the heart failure which was the result. But what was I to do? Give up cycle touring? NEVER! Ebike's came along at just the right time; I jumped on and never looked back. Well actually, I do still look behind me of course, but mainly to see where the others have got to... Tee hee.
Ebiking the Danube - Passau to Vienna
The best section of the Donau Radweg, The Danube Cycle Track. Oldies on Ebikes, it's the perfect holiday. We saw the Schlogen Schlinge and the marvelous Abbey at Melk, and one or two other unforgettable places.

Cycling the Danube. Kelheim, Regensburg Passau
มุมมอง 3484 หลายเดือนก่อน
The first section eastwards from Kelheim to Regensburg, then onto Straubing and Degendorf before arriving in Passau. This is a lesser pedalled section of the Danau Radweg, (Danube cycle path) but was a truly fabulous ride. Highly recommended, if you have time.
Cycling the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal from Nuremberg to Kelheim
มุมมอง 5295 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Rhein-Main-Donau canal joins the part of Europe draining northwards via the Rhine to the part draining Eastwards via the Danube. It rises to above 400m though it's a gentle ride. We used it to get to the start point of our Danube trip.

Cycling Wertheim to Mainz along the River Main
มุมมอง 7878 หลายเดือนก่อน
We pedalled westwards from Wertheim along the River Main and took in Miltenberg and Aschaffenburg before cutting out the massive meander to the east of Frankfurt, and ending in the city of Mainz, again somewhere not on the over worn tourist track. An interesting route though very very enjoyable, perhaps because the Mainradweg is so little known and used. Definitely worth a visit one summer.
Cycling the River Elbe, Melnik to Dresden via Terezin, Litomerice and Decin
มุมมอง 1.4K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Three more days on the ElbeRadWeg, this time from Melnik northwards to Dresden via Litomerice and Decin through what must be considered to be the Elbe Gorge. The scenery was up to anything the Rhine gorge had to offer us the year before but with much fewer people. We went to Terezin, site of the oppressive interment camp of the 1940s, and finished in Dresden, a surprisingly classy city. The who...

The Penultimate day. Glen Cassley was as good as anywhere else on the whole trip. Up to the top and over into the Valley holding one of Scotland's biggest Lochs, Loch Shin. What a view, what a ride, what a day. There's a book which goes with this series of films, It's called Old but Electrified. Hence the name change. Cycling the Great North Trail part 25 - Glascarnoch to Rosehall (The Underwater Ebiking Episode)

Ebikes and water don't mix too well. Or so you'd think. I tested mine to the extreme and it came through unscathed. OK, it surfaced again though it was draped in pond weed. It worked though.

First big ride of 2022 back on the Great North Trail and The An Turas Mor (same thing this far north). Five of us begin a five day trip with this 35 miler through Muir and up the valley of the River Black Water. But this ride didn't go exactly to plan!
Cycling the Great North Trail part 9 - Alston to Haltwhistle via the South Tyne Trail

An easy day along the mostly flat old railway line course of the South Tyne Trail. The small exception is the steep descent to go under the Lambley viaduct, then up the other side. But the view from the top makes it all worthwhile

Merci Thierry pour tes mots! Don
Another well presented video, cheers 🚲👍🙂
Thanks Tony, you probably win the ‘longest serving appreciator’ medal😊
@OldButElectrified I've still some catching up to do with your videos but thanks, I'll put the medal in my trophy cabinet next to my Blue Peter badge 👍
Thanks for details of towns and accommodation and magic carpet shots from on high.
Ha, thanks Simon, yeah that carpet sure takes some packin’ !
Excellent Don, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Dave, very kind (and sooooo discerning)😊
Hi, doing this but in reverse as part of a 3000 mile European tour. Was looking at how to get from Rothenburg to the Main Dunelm Canal at Nuremberg and then I see you’ve done just that in your video!!! Could you please let me know which route you took? Many thanks Ed
Another great video Another great video
Thanks Donald. Regards, Don
Great video
Concise, complimentary (and correct).😊
Beautiful roads, amazing weather for Wales!
Nice drone clips…. Probably highly illegal since almost all cities, recreation areas, near airports and villages are no fly zones in the Netherlands… (I would say roughly 95% is a no fly zone).
Great ride through the province South Holland. I was born in Gouda and live nearby this town. Sorry the Kermis attractions spoiled the market place around the town hall 😉
Maybe a suggestion for a next trip, even two in fact: Take a route towards the Zeeuwse Eilanden. I think you can dream the route through the dunes from Hook to Katwijk and back. The other suggestion: Instead of following the Rhine, follow the Meuse (Maas). Some parts overlap but it is a different experience. 😊
Thanks Paul, we might just give that a go!
Nice video, and nice to see you having such a good time. I've noticed that a lot of British cycling vloggers who come to NL don't stray too far from the ferries. There's a lot to enjoy in North and South Holland, but do come a bit further east next time. Try following one or two of the LF Routes (green and white signage). My own favourite is the LF3 Hanzeroute that follows the IJssel river past some lovely historic Hanseatic League cities like Deventer, Hattem and Kampen.
Hi Tarquin, Thanks for the encouragement. Agreed, but I think the reason is that most Englishmen only come for a few days and so only go a max range of 1.5 day’s ride from Europoort. Though our ‘go to’ places are Leiden and Dordrecht we do go to Tilburg, Breda amd as far as Venlo. 😊 Don
As a Dutchman living in this area of Holland, it's very nice to see the bikepaths from your perspective. Especially the drone shots are very nice!
Thanks John, hope you (tall, fit and smiley) dutch folks appreciate what you have in the feitspads there. Yeah, I agree the drone shots really boost the films. You’re very discerning.😊 Don
Great routing! Many familiar places from my rides around Rotterdam
Enjoyed that emensly! I was in the Netherlands in 98 and have not been able to go back. Your very lucky to be able to visit and enjoy that great country. Thanks so much for sharing with us!!
Thanks Walt, I hope you can go back there soon. We are so lucky living within a day’s ride of the Hull -Europoort ferry, so go twice a year! Sorry old bean, was that rubbing salt…. ? Don
You pronounced Gouda pretty well by the way 🙂
What a very nice video! I'm from the province of Zuid-Holland myself and I think I rode about 90% of these roads and paths you filmed, very much fun to watch! The drone shots really added to the experience! The SS Rotterdam is really a nice addition as well! Saw some nice vintage randonneur bikes by the looks of it. Thanks for this video
Thanks CW for taking the time to support and encourage. Comment like yours mean a lot and its good to know my little films are watched and appreciated in NL. Can’t wait to go back, see you in May! Don
Same. So nice to see riders from abroad enjoying it.
@@urbandiscountDitto Urb !!!
Gouda pronounced How-da with a hard H. Almost guttural.
My wife's from the Rozenburg area and we lived there for a short while. So good to see your trip along many of the fiets paths that I have cycled so much. Thanks.
You’re most welcome Ron.😊
A great video.! For the last 12 years, excluding the Covid period, 8 of us cycle in the Netherlands. We use the DFDS ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam, it’s really North Shields to Ijmuiden. We stay in one hotel, usually a different one every year, for 3 nights and cycle around the area completing about 45 miles a day using the numbered node system. The Fietsknoop app, free of charge, is brilliant… Try it if you have not already downloaded it. Try staying in Woerden at the Van Rossum Hotel, between Gouda and Utrecht and cycling around that area including cycling up the east side of the River Vecht……… Best wishes, Duncan McLean.
Just missing the Grumpy Girls!
Love this video, as usual best cycling video on you tube!
Thanks Cheryl, you’re very kind. Where ‘ja wanna go???
Thanks for sharing. We are riding the same section next year. Looking forward
It’s changing the attitudes and mindsets of the U.K’s population to cyclists and cycling, especially drivers, as well as educating some of the cyclists, like the ones that cycle on footpaths, this week 17th September 2025, there was a spokesperson from Cycling U.K. on BBC Breakfast, she mentioned more cycling infrastructure, one of the presenters John Kaye said U.K’s cities are old and have narrow winding streets, the response should have been to that answer, isn’t Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris as old?
It’s a shame that people, especially drivers do not have any patients with cyclists and others in the U.K.
Just finished the Trawys in reverse solo on a gravel bike, it would be better with a group as the amount of gates to be opened and closed is incredible. Great route challenging when carrying luggage.
Well done Mark. Where next? Don
Lovely vibes and great narration! You must have had a great time cycling 😉
Yes! Thank you!
Enjoyed following your trip guys and glad you're both keeping fit, well and chipper! ❤ Yvonne x
Thanks Yvonne😊 X Don and Yvonne
Yet another v good cycling cinematic production by CB Productions. Love the drone footage - what brand & model do you use?
Hello Mt. Plucker, I’ve used the DJI Mavic pro for years but its a little cumbersome for bike touring, thats what I used in Wales. However I bought the simpler, lighter one now before this Germany/Austria trip, called Mini 2 se. I found it much more useable when on the bike. D
Brilliant Don, thanks for posting.
Thanks Dave
A great idea for a trip, thanks for sharing. Looks a bit less effort to navigate than the one we did earlier this year down the Atlantic coast of Portugal Oporto-south. But.. that’s another good one for your investigation potentially.
Ha, thanks John, that route too is alzo going on ze list😊
Great trip!
i just don't understand why you are doing this on the most uncomfortable bikes ever built. Just buy an electric traditional transport bike with a 3 gear shift.
You rode past my house in Corris 😊. People have been wondering why hundreds of cyclists are going up through the village and we're finding out about the new route. Brilliant ❤

Nice video! Tip, you can make a de-tour. Rozenburg - Ferry - Maassluis -Hoek van Holland and the Coastal bikepath to Den Haag - Wassenaar -Leiden. Verry nice dunes and sea views Keep Paddelinng/ Blijf Trappen
Ace!
Did it a couple of weeks ago. It's changed a little since you did it. Paths are mor overgrown and the Singaling Hut has been broken into and used as a bothy with no front door. Done it on x2 Ragley Marley 29+ Manual bikes. I'd have loved an Ebike up from the Laggan side! that was quite the Hike-a-bike.
Where's part 2 and 3 ?
Oh they’re coming Rob, but its Summer and Im away on a bike-ride, tee her😊 Don
Traws = Trous as in ‘Trouser’. Eryri = Er-ruh-ri.

Theres actually a lot to do in Delft. The old and the new church are worth a visit. Theres the Prinsenhof, which was William the Silents residence, where he was infamously shot dead. Its a museum now. Theres lots of small shops and nice restaurants and cafés. And the university has some pretty interesting stuff, if you can get in. Theres a whole computer museum in the basement of the IT faculty. Lots of great architecture everywhere. And some really nice parks with lakes and beaches you can relax at.
I wish I had friends like this to take up these kinds of trips! So tired of doing them by myself. 😭
What a gorgeous place to ride! Three summers ago my wife and I spent two weeks travelling around the UK by rail and we spent a lot of time up north in the more remote areas. Absolutely magical. Cheers, and thanks for the memories 🙂
My plesj 😊
Excellent
Thanks😊
Great video footage and narrative 🚲🙂👍
Thanks Tony😊
One of your party seems to be carrying a lot more kit than the rest of you! Great ride, must give it a go sometime. Was you on the ebike?
Hi Ken, yes that was me on an e-bike (but mainly unseen in the film); they make me carry all the flap jack and everyone’s shoes, cravats and smoking jackets, just because I’m on the ‘Booster Bike’ Though Mike is also on an e-bike too! He just tells them all to carry their own gear or not bring so much. Maybe I’m just soft 🥵 Don
Nice video.
Just ace! Cracking weather
Just a very enjoyable video of a lovely trip. Thanks for making it. I cycle a lot, mostly off road and gravel but never in Europe. Could you say a word please about how you planned this trip. The graphics of your route were impressive considering how busy that part of Germany is.
Thanks Michael, thats good of you to take time and say. I have sometimes though Id make a quick video about trip planning too, maybe a winter project. But in essence I use Basecamp, Open Street Maps and Booking.com See you in Snowdonia! Don
