Amp Gain Circuit vs Distortion Pedals: Which Do You Prefer?
มุมมอง 168หลายเดือนก่อน
I love Gain. From subtle crunch to full on shred, distortion and gain are my friends. However, there are different methods of getting your crunchy tones, whether by cranking your amp, using it's built in gain circuit, or by using a distortion pedal. For me, if possible I try to use whatever amp distortion is available to me, but there are times when it's simply not enough or too bland, and then...

Hi, thanks for reviewing this bass guitar. I wanted to ask you: have you noticed an imbalance in the neck? Does it lean forward? Some say that the neck weighs more than the body. What do you think?
There is a little bit, the body on all Squier Debut and Sonic (formerly Bullet) models will be a little bit thinner than the higher priced models, and therefore, lighter. Add the longer and heavier neck of a bass to that equation, and you will get some neck dive. I will say it's not too bad for me, very rarely notice it happening. But I mostly play seated, so your experience may differ. You may consider the Jackson JS1 bass as well, as I have used that extensively and I think the balance is slightly better if you can forgive the metal aesthetic. Price point is generally similar. Great question, thanks for asking and stopping by!
@SlydeBytes Thank you for the interesting and in-depth evaluations you provided, have a nice day!
@Klaudio64 You have a great day as well!
Another video said it’s different to buy them online than in stores. The color I want isn’t it stores but can be bought online, were they being picky about it or it’s a trustable opinion?
So this is just my honest opinion from my personal experience, but basically it depends. Companies like Sweetwater for example, I have no issues ordering online from. They are honest and if something isn't right, they make it right. So if I were buying a guitar online without playing it in person first, that's who I would buy from. I've had really mixed results with the other big name "GC" store...some bad experiences and the rest were just ok. This is why most people recommend going to a store and checking out guitars in person first. And in general I concur.
@ thank you for that
My favorite review of this amp! Such great insights. Your personal perspective was so helpful. Thanks so much!
Thank you for the encouragement and for stopping by! Happy shreddin'!
🤟🏻🇧🇷
Yeah man, I've the black version, and I'm never letting go of it. It's my favorite guitar by far. The neck feels like a $1000 neck, even 16 years later. Mine is an 08. Think I paid 150 for it new from GC. I have a Gotoh floid bridge waiting to go in, need to rout the front, and swapped the pickups lke 10 years ago for actives emg61 neck and SD Mick Thompson Blackouts Metal bridge, and I just love it. This beast sustains for ages, but the trem is not good if you have it floating, I had to deck mine. Agree about how heavy it feels. Great review!
Oh man, Mick's sig pickups in this thing would be sweet!!! I may have to give that a try! Sounds like you've modded one spicy guitar! Keep Shreddin'! 🎸🔥🎸🔥
I love my um300
Same! Still my favorite distortion pedal I own
What were the settings on your Rumble in this video?
Bass @ 11 o'clock, mid @ 3 o'clock, treble @ 1 o'clock, contour engaged, no overdrive
Sweet tone on that intro
Thank you! It really stood out to me too!
Thanks so much for the advice. Im thinking Ill get one soon before the current sale ends
Hope ya love that guitar!
Happy New Year Bro!! H ave you heard of ZOOM MS60B+ or used it before?
I have! And I have been very very tempted by it before
After watching your tube overdrive pedal clip I decided to buy it. A great pedal for only $25! Thanks a bunch for your videos... Enjoy them!
Thanks so much and I'm glad you like the pedal!!
Great review just bought one of these with the small matching cab as a practice rig. It’s loud for what it is & doesn’t take up much space. Just subscribed 🤘🤘🤘
Thank ya and glad to have you in the community!! 🎸🔥🎸
The bass sounded great. I also liked the Jackson JS22. I have a X series Soloist that I really like. Many years ago I had a Jackson Performer. Total junk. They have really stepped up their game over the years.
I'm glad you told me that, I have been tempted by the Jackson Performer series on the used market before and held off out of unfamiliarity! Think I'll stick with the JS! Thanks!!
Awesome, I just got one too, the player 2 version with rolled frets and classic tuners. My only complaint is the trem coming flat against the deck. It plays great otherwise but it means I have to get a setup. You can feel the difference going from a squire. Even from my epiphone and Ibanez this feels way more quality. As good as my schecter and Jackson "v", but way different. The clarity is insane. The fixed the fret sprout with the player 2 series, as there was none of that. Probably had to as the rolled the frets.is yours glossy maple on the front of the neck and satin on the back? (shit you answered this in the video) My first fender too, wanted one for so long. I may change the pickguard to off white at some point.
Congrats on the Fender!! The Player series is amazing, and the Player 2 just takes it further! For sure a very different tone than the Jacksons, very clear and a bit less aggressive. Ceramic vs Alnico II I'd wager. Regardless, it's a neat tone and really works in many genres. For the fret sprout, it's more that you can just feel the fret ends rather than being sharp. Like a tactile thing. My Jim Root Tele is similar but not quite as pronounced. Different. Rolled is still my preference. Again congrats on the Strat, may it bring you much happiness, and thanks for stopping by! Happy shreddin'! 😆🔥🎸
Got this with super low action and strung it up with flats
Nice! How's it sound with the flats?
@ awesome!!
Marshall doesn't sound bad at all...until you compare it side by side...still not really bad...but my preference is definitely the tone of the katana. I have the katana 2 12, excellent amp. Thinking I'll get the artist head with a cabinet next.
Spark Go "clean" already sounds noisy. Too much for the tiny amp?
That's something I brought up in other videos with the Spark Go, it definitely struggles at handling higher volumes more so than the NU-X. Its speaker is simply smaller and that's a side effect.
My first was DOA. Positive Grid replaced it. The second one died after 1 year and less than 10 hours of use. No power, no battery charging. Interesting product, but poor quality.. However, I contacted Positive Grid support, and after confirming that I had tried all FAQ solutions, they sent me a RMA number and shipping label and sent me a new unit, although the waranty period had expired. Very cool.
Yeah I love the amp and the app, the whole package is handy...but I'm still kinda dubious about it. I love the thing, but I have been using mine less lately just in case
Update.. I contacted Positive Grid support via their Web site. After asking me if I had tried solutions from their FAQ, they sent me a RMA number and a shipping label. Within 3 working days, I had a new unit at my door. Excellent customer service in Canada.
It's nice to come across a guitar or instrument video where someone's playing the instrument right from the beginning instead of only talking for 5 minutes straight.
I try to always start with some jamming unless I need time to explain something. Sets the mood and gets me more excited to review 😆! Thank ya for checking out the vid!
Shout out to your parents. That's truly awesome.
For sure! They made a huge difference with that gift!
Merry Christmas to you too. Hope you have a good one.
Thanks so much and Happy New Year!
Love the summary that you put in the description! Super helpful
Thank you! I wasn't sure anyone ever read those but I keep trying 😅! Glad it helped you!
Does the pickup has the esp brand on them or just blank? Mine came blank
I believe mine are blank as well
Hey there young man! ... old blooze rock guy here again..😎👍🏻. Always a pleasure to see a new vid from you.. love your laid back , guy next door approach to your videos.. (love the pets by the way ) maybe do a video someday showing us how get “Helmet” tones out of that Bugera V5 😁😁..... I have a bluesdriver and a Boss DS1 into the V5.......I should be able to get some “metal-ish” tones (sorta) 😁
Hey there good to see ya! I've actually got a vid on metal tones with the Bugera V5, it can definitely do it, but it sounds a little bit better running through a cab. The stock speaker is def more vintage based, but that said you can still get some cool early metal tones out of it too! The Boss DS-1 can do metal very well when hit with an OD boost. The Blues Driver would be perfect for that. I did a vid on that too, but used a bad monkey instead. Overall, you've got all the right stuff for some great grinding tones! I need a blues driver, what a fantastic pedal! Thanks for stopping by friend!
@ yes! I totally agree about the speaker in the Bugera. Immediately after buying it, I built a home made cab and put a 12” celestion greenback in it... the Bug is just a head now... I love it that way! And now that you mention it , I remember that video on the v5 tones...I’ll have to revisit your v5 video...
@dwstoeckel4740 ah I love Celestion greenbacks! Such a great speaker! Also, major respect for building your own cab, one of these days I'd like to try that with an Eminence Swamp Thang
hi is this V neck or C necK?
I would describe this as a C style neck
I dont ever use active pickups. I prefer vintage passive type pickups. Having to buy a battety to use the guitar is kinda annoying.. but options are nice...
The battery is what keeps me from active pickups in general too
Both sound good just different
Thank you for this video
Thank you for stopping by! 😁
Love your videos! It's so great to see you mentioning lunchbox amps... they're affordable and really great quality, especially for bedroom musicians (like myself) who want to sound good without shelling out a ton of money. The Orange Micro heads are awesome, as are the Joyo Bantamps, and there are some others as well that are really cool and a great option, without having to pay a ton out of pocket. As usual, that Charvel So-Cal rocks! It looks so cool and sounds great when you play it... Looking forward to your next video!
Exactly! I'm really liking the lunchbox amp head format more and more. I'm not much of a computer guy, so the lunchbox heads let me get different styles and tones without taking up a ton of room as an affordable alternative to all of the modeling and capturing stuff. Plus, you often get a real tube in there, and I think that matters! Even if just a little bit. Thanks as always, more videos will be coming soon!
A friend of mine has a orange micro.... loves it ... never gets it over “2” on the master... we usually just get together and jam at my house... but it sounds great!
I can't get mine past that volume either without annoying people 😂, so loud!
Hey Slydebytes! I have what’s probably a really dumb question… but here it goes 😂 Dumb question: I’ve been thinking about getting the micro dark myself. The only problem is that I don’t have any cabinets only combo amps. That being said, is it ok to plug a lunchbox amp head into a combo or should I purchase a cab?
No dumb questions here my friend! I would definitely purchase a cab, I'm not sure plugging into a combo would be necessarily good for either. My main concern would be electric current damaging either amp head or combo.
And cabs can be easily built at home.... I bought a 12” celestion greenback for 135.00 and built my own..😎👍🏻
I think it's been mentioned in a previous video (possibly multiple), but Orange actually makes a pretty sweet 8" cab specifically for their Micro amps, and it's rather affordable (like $100 USD)... they're actually really great! You can usually find a combo deal on the Micro Dark/Terror and the cab, well worth it in my opinion.
Just grabbed a Snow White one today. They've got a black fretboard with white sharkfins. It's Black Friday, got it for only $132 !
Niiice! That's gonna look wicked! Hope ya enjoy!
Ordered one last night. Next month I'm looking to buy one of those Ibanez Gio guitars.
Gio/Ibanez are typically pretty awesome guitars, I recommend them all lot!
I have that guitar. It's my favorite so far.
It's definitely a blast to play!!
thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving, Man...
Happy Thanksgiving, back at ya! 😁
Im starting to understand how expensive our hobby is now that im building a pedal board its so hard to ask for presents from people because most of them break the bank
For sure, there are some great budget options out there but it still adds up really fast! 😞
Great video as usual, especially for people looking for holiday (or otherwise) gifts for guitar/bass players! I can definitely vouch for the Orange Micro amps and Joyo Bantamps... at a tiny size, they're awesome for practicing, and can actually get quite loud if you're not paying attention... my personal fav is the Joyo ZoMBie, since it hits my usual "that sounds sweet" metal zone without much fussing with knobs :) Thanks for the video, looking forward to the next one!
Yeah I def wanna pick up some of the JOYO amp heads in the future! And maybe the Marshall DSL 1, and the Friedman, Big er, and Deizel minis too! Thank ya for watching and commenting!
Great video and suggestions! I take a size 40 in a Fender Rumble or a Two Tone in a Squier Debut. 😂
I honestly considered both of those myself! I gotta get a two tone in the collection!! Thank you!
That AXE is iconically BRUTAL Slyde !!!! Of all my axes I do not have EMG pickups and I play ALL Metal, I do have some good Metal humbucker sounding pickups in lots of mine but I still want to mod one of my axes with maybe a passive EMG or get a used axe with EMG'S...GREAT AWESOME BRUTAL tone on that TELE !!!!! It will be a classic some years down the road...💯✌🤘🤘✌💯
I have been tempted to try out the EMG passive, H4 I believe. The ceramic pickup variation. Just curious to see what that sounds like compared to the 81 and my Duncan Distortions
That guitar is a monster!!
💯💯💯🔥
That is a beautiful AWESOME looking sounding FENDER AXE Slyde !!!! SIMPLE but BRUTAL !!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE SLIPKNOT,, I have 2 of their great CD's ,I love Jim but MICK is my favorite.. ENJOY the new purchase !!💯💯💯💥💥💯💯💯
For sure! I'll go into a full in depth review of this guitar coming Sunday, but it's really something! Mick is fantastic, I want his Jackson signature really bad. Hopefully I'll track one down! Thanks as always friend! Happy shreddin'!
hi where would you put the ac simulator in your pedal board, at the end of the line or before allthe other effects or before a flanger ?
I use it before any other effects, seems to get the most "pure" tone quality from my rig there. All rigs/amps are different though so results may vary. I definitely recommend experimenting with your effects chain to find what works best for you. Great question, happy shreddin', thanks for stopping by!
@@SlydeBytes thanks for replying, just ordered one from aliexpress £14.49 -£17.39 after tax so cheers for the demo
@vnrider1500 No prob, that's what I'm here for! Hope you enjoy that pedal! 😁
Nice playing!!! The p90s just hit different.
Thank you! They definitely do! Love the unique tone myself!
Awesome guitar bro! It doesn’t have a whammy bar so I’m wondering if Jim Root is known for playing rhythm guitar lol. I don’t know too much about him tbh
Thank you! Jim is sometimes called the rhythm guitarist in Slipknot, but most of the time it seems that he and the other guitarist Mick trade solos these days. Neither use whammies often, but Jim does have a new signature Charvel with a Floyd.
sick man! i have mics old jackson soloist in white. these are sweet tho. i want his newer charvels
Mick's Jackson Soloist is def my favorite of his signatures! I was super torn between the Tele and the Charvel, but the simplicity and the iconic status of the Tele won me over. I may still pick up one of those Charvel's in the future though .... Happy shreddin', thanks for being here! 😁🔥🎸
I just commented on your unboxing video. I want to add this has a narrow neck with a38mm nut. So it’s basically like the P bass with a Jazz neck. The thinner and lighter body gives it a great feel too. Another great video!
I did not realize that, but it makes a ton of sense because that neck feels great and I love Jazz basses! Thanks for the info! 😁
Just got one for my birthday (about a week early.) I got the Sunburst. This makes my 10th bass (currently building number 11.) My wife says I have a problem, but she’s an enabler so there’s that.😂 I haven’t run it though my Rumble yet but, it sounds phenomenal running through my Fender Bassman 10. Great unboxing video!
Happy Birthday! And hey, you can never have too many guitars! Awesome that you're building your own too, I want to do that eventually! My wife has definitely enabled my guitar acquisition syndrome, I hear ya! Again Happy Birthday, thanks for watching and commenting!
There's a black one in my area for 50usd in basically new shape. Im tempted 👀
That is an incredible deal! Heck, I'd buy it again at that price!
Thanks for the demo!@@SlydeBytes
@@micksterminator3 That's what I'm here for, and I hope it was helpful! Thank you for watching and commenting! Happy shreddin'!
I'm just bought this 2 weeks ago, very nice colour , neck with slim profile and smooth that good to play.
💯💯💯 it's a great guitar!!!
@@SlydeBytes Yes yes Happy to have this, especially got single coil and also humbucker in one guitar.
@edogenpaku7050 It's a very nice pickup combo to have! So much versatility!
