This channel is a snippet into my life and love of plants. Particularly Epiphytes and rare and unusual plants. I also worked in Nature Conservation and poverty alleviation in South Africa and believe it is important to share relevant information with you guys. How will we make the world a better place if we don't share these sorts of things?

I wonder whether the lights in the "germination" chamber are always on or you turn them off for the night. Perhaps I could use them for heating as well.
Hey Vlad, thanks for the question. I personally don't turn the lights off but I feel that one should since plants ; I believe plants should experience a dark period. If it is a light used for plants and you have a thermometer you should be able to see what the impact on temperature will be. Although bottom heat is more effective when plants require heat.
Verree helpfull vid. I hughesed this video 2 yrs ago. 2day i have @ least 8 Stagg's germinated. Probb's i encountered were coolar climate & lack ov mediocallee orientated temperature control ov constant 32 degree's celcius as my aircon onllee go's too 30 degree's. I also used PeteMoss instead ov le darker mullch that seemed 2 b hughesed here. Took 2 + solar Earth yr's to gain germination height ov biggest 5mm. Simmilar condition's too Tuart Rainforrest between Cervantee's & Supertube's Surfbreak. About to do my second seeding attempt. Origion's ov my Stagg 4rom area that know longer exist's as it was turned into a Suburb. Karanda Nth QLD. Tah 4 le Video, it work's.
Aaahhh, thanks so much for you feedback on this video. I really do appreciate it. I also think many others will get value out of your comment. This is what my channel hopes to foster. Thank you!🌱💚
Maíz morado o maíz negro mostró ese maíz párese es negro ese grano de maíz será negro ese maíz si me vende semillas de ese maíz
I live in zone 7 so I'm keeping it indoors for now, but I've heard it can grow in this climate. The foliage will die off in the winter and regrow each spring. I'll have to run some experiments!
Thanks for you comment. Always interesting to here these sorts of experiences especially when ones headspace is set to a specific latitude....lol!
Some of these plants are incredible. Sagos palms and staghorn ferns. Like plants that are jumbled mixes of other flora.
Absolutely! I love plants and learning about new genre or species....The world is filled to the brim with so many incredible species.
Thank you !! this is exactly the info I wanted. Love this plant
Hello! It is my absolute pleasure. Thanks for you comment. 🌱🌱💚
Hi! I’ve been given 2 small containers (approximately 4 inches tall by 3 inches wide) with citronella grass and plan to plant them in containers (12” inch containers) for our back porch. I understand the sun necessity and watering but do not know what to look for to make sure it is healthy. Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks in advance and hope you have a good day!
Hello! Thanks for the question. So, Citronella grass gets BIG by comparison to lemongrass. So remember to get huge pot. I would even go with concrete to be honest as the plant gets tall 1.5m high and almost 2m across and will need some heavy base to prevent the wing from toppling it over. I'd use a coco- peat base with some sand, perlite, vermiculite and a …. you guessed it... controlled release fertiliser or rich organic fertiliser will do too. Also likes a bit of air movement since it is a grass. Hope it helps and happy planting!
Loved this❤❤❤ feel like I could grow a tree now
Wow! Thanks, that is a really great comment. Made me smile.
How often do you water
Hey there, during the dry season I water less often, just barely. maybe once per week. During summer or the rainy season almost daily. It grows pretty quickly at 33 degs lat. 50cm or more per season. Really depends. I have cut mine so many times hard to tell its age. Sorry... lol
How old is the large vanilla orchid
This Aechmea is grown beautifully. Amazing. At first glance it looks similar to A.orlandiana, but I was surprised to see that the inflorescences are completely different. Great video.
Thanks and yes, you are correct. I tend to like this one more than A.orlandiana... almost... 😅😂, well you know that goes...
Hi man, I'm really liking your content, very valuable informations. I am keeping various pineapple plants, but here in south italy I fear that keeping them out in the winter would be too cold, as it gets down to around 5 degrees at night, and sometimes if it's a cold wave it also drops to zero. I also read that winter is the season in which they make fruits, so maybe being inside without enough light prevents mine from fruiting. Down there what are tour lower temps? How do you manage them?
Hey Roberto Thanks for your Q. Well sounds as though your temps are not too different from mine in the winter. My nights at the VERY coldest can get down to 5 degrees Celsius but the days are usually above 15 and as high as 27 or even 30(although not common for winter). As long as they don't freeze I think you're good to leave them out. I have had mine flower during spring and summer so fruit can be ready before winter hits. Anyway hope that helps.🌱
Hiya is it safe to use fibre glass with goldfish please,? I want to put my beautiful big 7 year old Blackmoor fancy goldfish in the acrylic bath. Cheerio sweets
Hey there, absolutely, they should be just fine. I actually have fish in my bath tubs too.
I have serious questions Anyone can answer Why must grow in a container like that, while in habitat the spores can naturally grow? Can we just pour the spores on a spaghnum moss (without container) and keep the moisture everyday?
Hey, sure, try it. My assumption is that with a container you are able to apply greater stability as far as temperature, light and foreign potentially dangerous spores are concerned. Remember you're doing it to ensure that the spores are not overwhelmed by random fungi, or something that may prey on your spores.
Hi Gabriel. Lovely channel. Subscribed. Found your channel while looking to find ways to propogate my Keurboom seeds. I collected hundreds and want to plant at least 200 on my smallholding. I also want to share young plants with small farmers and urban gardeners. I've not been successful in propogating them in the past. I tried soaking in hot water. Crushing. Today i am trying hot water overnight. Wish me like.
Hey Nazeer Thanks for the sub. Awesome, Yeah, funny that such an important species can be so overlooked. Remember that they can be erratic with germination as well but if you see them imbibing water and radicals appear then, you're halfway there. Enjoy, let me know how that goes. By the way which region are you located in? Later🌱
@@gardeningwithgabriel6698 I'm in Cape Town in the Philippi Horticultural Area on small organic farm
Can you eat it
Well...technically you could eat anything😅😂 Although, no there is no literature or 'real time' knowledge of anyone consuming them. At least not that I am aware of.
My jaw dropped when I saw those tiny ones were 2 years old.
Yep, ferns are slow....lol!
And they come from spores !!! It's incredible. Mother Nature is really something else.
Can you provide some planting from seed information and lifespan on this gorgeous shrub.
Yes, sure. In nature it usually germinates around autumn, depending where in South Africa you are. However, the best time to sow this spp. is in spring from fresh seed. They need to be replaced or re-sown every 3 or so years. Although I am not sure how long they would go for. They come and go at will in my garden. Hope it helps.🌱🌱
I'm not sure you guys have a purple corn in Mexico I never heard about it we do have fun on the Inca culture in Peru so we growing purple corn
Hey there, some clarity...? Are you in Mexico or are you under the impression that I live in Mexico? Either way, I am based in South Africa and the purple corn was given to me as a gift.💚
I was just trying to find something metal to use. I need to make sure squirrels don’t pull at it- I have these hooks already! Love idea - but is moss not needed? I’m in CA .
Hey Warren, I would just use something to secure the plant in place and nothing more, especially as they are epiphytic. Some moss can be nice but should not be so much as to redirect the new root set into the moss. You want the roots to set onto the host rather than the 'aiding' substrate if that makes sense? As for the squirrels, can't help you there mate. We have monkeys but fortunately they rarely come into the garden here.
Nice ornamental plant to have in a controlled environment and with the responsibility that comes with it.
Hey, lol! Not sure if that is possible to be honest... but I hear you, as a composted biomass it could be great
My granadilla just died in the middle of summer. Im thinking its because i planted carrots at the base.
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that. That'd be a first for me, I'm not so sure that it was because you planted the carrots? Can you think of anything else you may have noticed? That is very curious, no?
Ive learnt so much from these videos
Hey! its an absolute pleasure. Thanks, I am grateful for the feedback.
What an amazing video?! So cool!
Hey Jermaine, again, thanks a lot. Was concerned this one may have been too long. But I feel, better more information than too little. We have a skip slider... 😅
Thank you
Hey, it's a pleasure. I am glad you found it was helpful 🌱💚
Great video, thank you so much!
What part of the plant do you use to make a tincture
Hi Honestly, I couldn't say since I've not made tinctures but if one makes a cream one uses the leaves.🌱
Does the water have to be kept warm throughout the whole 24 hours?
Hey, thanks for you Q. Nope, only initially. this helps break the seeds' dormancy.
To kill a madeira vine, scuff the surface of shoots and leaves and immediately spray with a glyphosate poison as they reseal after only twenty seconds. Took me years of fighting this tenacious invader to learn this.
Hey! Between you and me, 😅 I didn't wanna mention the "G" word. Although to be realistic. Glyphosate applied correctly will work to eradicate this plant. Although when it is growing near water, a protected area or within a 1:(any amount) flood line then we need to take special care.
Does the flowering part produce seeds that can be used to propagate more plants? I have a similar plant/brom.
Hey Toni Thanks for your question. Yes, absolutely! This is how this particular plant started its life. Although, I would suggest that you hand pollinate to ensure a good seed set. Hope it helps.
Привет, Джимми! Рад тебя видеть!
Привет! Мой друг, давно! как дела?
Everything is fine, thank you! I'm seeing if I can grow turmeric, maybe in a greenhouse)))@@gardeningwithgabriel6698
If you have temperatures of above 15 degrees Celsius during summer then it should grow easily but if you have a green house then that should be better. Let me know how it goes!
@@gardeningwithgabriel6698 Usually the average temperature is above 15 degrees here from May to September. We begin to grow seedlings of heat-loving plants at home (we use ultraviolet lamps for additional illumination) from February-March, then in April-May we transfer them to the greenhouse.
Oh welcome back! This is so cool! Can you do an end of summer nursery tour too?Would love to see how it’s changed since the start.
I actually can't wait to film it all, 2020 was the last update. A lot has changed.
Would love to see an update !!!
Unfortunately my cats knocked it off my grow area twice after a years worth of development. I have harvested more spore just this summer so will definitely do a continuation on it.😺
@@gardeningwithgabriel6698 Thanks !!
I don't have a distiller for extraction. Would cutting up the leaves and just boiling them or soaking them in water for say 24 hours, straining this and using that liquid as a spray work?.. I'm going to need copious amounts as I live within 4 metres of an inconsiderate mosquito breeder neighbor who sees no problem with her stagnant waters laying around. And I tried to talk to her about it, and instead of taking the sensible action, she installed a security camera to deter me from dealing with the water holding vessels on her property. 🤦♀️😡
Hey Janis Thanks for your comment. Well I don't know about boiling but I would imagine that if you do an infusion into olive oil or some other carrier and use a great deal of the grass stalks and leaves in oil that is heated for an extended period of time but never boiled then the end result should be something you could dilute in distilled water and a touch of isopropyl alcohol. I'll do it soon and let you know. Have been chatting to my mom about it so.
Love your video
mine is smooth, not bumpy. does it mean it wasn't pollinated?
If it swells you're gonna be a Dad/Mom....
Hi, Fellow Capetonian here, I use this for my little one, cleared up his mucus really fast, I use it daily. To propagate we just shove it in the soil and keep it moist.
Thanks for sharing that, so great to know that people are around the country still actively use it as remedies for ailments common to us. As we were taught.😉
