    Stumbled across this place years ago. It was like stepping back in time going in the dugout and looking thru a very old Sears catalog in the old store. They had a black smith area and an old freight wagon and much more. Even waded into the Green River with my fishing pole. I am going to order the book.

    NO! It was not the Sharps or the Remington rolling block rifle that was the reason for the near extinction of the bison! It was the human! It would have been done with a muzzle loading flint lock rifle! Just remember this when someone says: "I caught my limit of fish!" So Sad.........

    The army would burn large sections of prairie in a spread out line of troopers dragging bales of grass on fire behind them with a strong crosswind. they would burn a swath 10 or 20 miles long. I always thought this was a cruel way a lot of the herds died off.

    I bought a model 1892, although made by Miroku/ Winchester. Chambered in 44-40 , had a large loop lever made to resemble Lucas McCain's rifle on the TV western show "The Rifleman". Also bought an 1873 chambered in 44-40 but with a 26 inch octagon barrel.

    Thanks for sharing this revolver's history! There was a smaller remington-beales "pocket" percussion revolver that was available originally as a percussion revolver, I recall that it was chambered for .31 caliber, and a couple of years later there were rim-fire conversions available so it could take .32 caliber rim-fire cartridges. I could be mistaken about the bore size, and it may have been .36 cal. percussion, later converted to .38 rim-fire.

    The Dragoon also went with a locking loading lever. The Walker was known to have this lever inadvertently drop sometimes when fired. The powder charge was lowered, too, to prevent the risk of a burst cylinder...seems like 60gr was a bit too much.

    I read, in Revolvers Of The Civil War, that their is no documentation cap and ball revolvers were reloaded in the field with spare cylinders.

    • @dickblust118
      @dickblust118 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the subject of some debate, but as described in the video, it could be readily accomplished with the Remington, while doing so with the Colt was possible, but much more impractical.

      You're right, that's a total myth. Once you fired your six rounds you were down to a saber.

    • @MrSpacejase
      @MrSpacejase 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CaliforniaFly I don't think that many foot soldiers carried these on the field. I'm thinking more of calvary or horse back. I believe this side arm for a man on a horse could have been reloaded by having spare cylinders already loaded, perhaps earlier in the day. These guns were a bit pricey for the average infantryman. Most foot soldiers seem to carry most of the time a rifle and bayonet. Horseback..perhaps an officer, sword and revolver.

    • @CaliforniaFly
      @CaliforniaFly 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrSpacejase Calvary soldiers were issued them and they didn't come with spare cylinders. That's a myth that keeps carrying on. Infantry would carry whatever they had at their disposal. Southern infantry were lucky to have a rifle at all.

    I have a book on Billy the Kid and it features pictures of his Colt Thunderer but says it was a 44 caliber. So, was his gun a modified 41 or did he actually have a later model of the Thunderer? Could a 41 even be modified to use 44 caliber ammo ?

    • @sweetwatercountyhistorical9823
      @sweetwatercountyhistorical9823 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Wesley. The Thunderer was not manufactured in .44 caliber, and it is extremely unlikely that anyone modified - or attempted to modify - one to chamber a .44-caliber round. Sadly, some authors of frontier west history are not always the most reliable sources when it comes to period firearms. Please contact us any time with additional questions.

    • @sweetwatercountyhistorical9823
      @sweetwatercountyhistorical9823 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When it comes to "True Grit" and Mattie's pistol, it gets confusing. In the original film, they referred to it as a Dragoon, but used a Walker replica. In the later version, they made the Dragoon reference, and also used a Dragoon replica. In other words, the Jeff Bridges version got it right.

    The guns were not responsible for killing anything. The people using them were responsible. The gun is a tool that is not capable of doing anything by itself. It is ignorant to say a gun killed anything because it can only be the person using the gun that did the killing. The correct way to word it would be; the Sharps and to a lesser extent the Remington rolling block rifle made it easier for hunters to bring to near extinction an entire animal species. Sorry but I'm sick and tire of inanimate objects being held responsible for human activity. You can build a house with a hammer and you can take one down with the same hammer. Throw that hammer on the ground and tell it to build a house and it will just sit there on the ground.
