I have a book on Billy the Kid and it features pictures of his Colt Thunderer but says it was a 44 caliber. So, was his gun a modified 41 or did he actually have a later model of the Thunderer? Could a 41 even be modified to use 44 caliber ammo ?
Hello, Wesley. The Thunderer was not manufactured in .44 caliber, and it is extremely unlikely that anyone modified - or attempted to modify - one to chamber a .44-caliber round. Sadly, some authors of frontier west history are not always the most reliable sources when it comes to period firearms. Please contact us any time with additional questions.
