The Wildflower Diaries | An Unceremonious Pause
Well, the doldrums of summer are here. Admittedly, this is my least favorite time of year: 100-degrees, hazy skies and brown hills. Unfortunately, my efforts to record an episode this week failed (my vlogging tripod broke in the backcountry). Ultimately, I've come to realization that the season of weekly vlogs has passed. For the remainder of the summer, I'll be posting episodes as they happen instead of weekly. I really appreciate everyone's support this season. It wasn't the sparkliest of seasons for the Wildflower Diaries, but it was real. Thanks for all of the support and encouragement.
Onwards and upwards,
Brian

Wildflower Diaries | S3:E6 - Water Light
มุมมอง 7618 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this episode, I depart from the namesake subject matter and return to an old favorite: Brennan's Wave. My primary goal the past two weeks has been to get my photographic feet under myself - so to speak - and just engage with the act of photography, even if it isn't epic fields of wildflowers. Not to worry, there'll be some wildflowers in the videos to come. Thanks for watching!
Wildflower Diaries | S3:E5 - Shadow's Edge
มุมมอง 11725 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this week's vlog, I share about my most recent experience with depression. Thanks for watching.
Wildflower Diaries | S3:E4 - Ponderosa Light
มุมมอง 139หลายเดือนก่อน
In this week's vlog, I see through an image several years in the making. I make my way to a set of whimsical ponderosas surrounded by arrowleaf balsamroot flowers in the Lincoln Hills area of the Rattlesnake Valley on what turned out to be an idyllic spring day. Thanks for watching!
Wildflower Diaries | S3:E3 - Aurora Jumbialis
มุมมอง 86หลายเดือนก่อน
In this week's installment, I show up very late to the aurora party. A day late. I set off to try to capture an image of the lights over Missoula. Fortunately, the solar winds have just enough sparkle left to put on a bit of show. Thanks for watching!
Wildflower Diaries | S3:E2 - Buttercup Canyon
มุมมอง 1672 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this week's episode of the Wildflower Diaries, the search continues for the small flowers. I happen upon a lovely buttercup bloom over Hellgate Canyon and opt to spend several days watching the light change. Thanks for watching!
The Wildflower Diaries | S3:E1 - FIRST BLOOM
มุมมอง 1822 หลายเดือนก่อน
How lovely it is to be back out in the hills and mountains, listening to the meadowlarks and watching the flowers reach for the sky. The first episode of this season tracks the first three(ish) weeks of the bloom in Missoula. I revisit a patch of yellow bells and shooting stars, waiting for dynamic lighting on the North Hills. The Wildflower Diaries will now post on Facebook, Instagram and TH-c...
Modern Wilderness
มุมมอง 765 หลายเดือนก่อน
In addition to being up through March at The Artists' Shop in Missoula, 'Modern Wilderness' is now fully online, with an interactive online gallery. The exhibit explores a nine-month chapter of my mental health photography journey through a series of seven photographs accompanied by short films. I'll be giving a talk about the show, including how I captured several of the images in the show on ...

First Ice
มุมมอง 1327 หลายเดือนก่อน
Winter has been slow to arrive in the West, but a couple of weeks ago, we had a cold snap, resulting in some fun ice formations. I spent several days working a shot on Rattlesnake Creek. This is the vlog and images from that experience. Thanks so much for watching!
Mountain Ghosts | An Encounter with 'Spectre of the Brocken'
มุมมอง 1888 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a clip from episode 3 of 'Autumn Light'. While waiting for sunset on a peak in the Swan Mountains of Western Montana, the sun broke through the clouds, throwing my shadows onto the mist surrounding the summit. The meteorological phenomena known as 'spectre of the brocken' is an eerie sort of joy to experience. Remember to say goodbye to ghosts. Check out the full episode here: th-cam.co...
Autumn Light | Epilogue
มุมมอง 2568 หลายเดือนก่อน
I filmed a quick outing up Rock Rock in mid-October, but it didn't fit cleanly into the theme of this season of 'Autumn Light'. This brief epilogue episode includes a slideshow of my favorite images from the fall. Thanks again for following along!
Autumn Light | S2:E6 - Seasons End
มุมมอง 2308 หลายเดือนก่อน
Last fall, I was in the throes of a rhuematoid arthritis (RA) flare-up, limiting me to walking only a painful steps from the van. I thought that was it. I thought that I'd never hike - much less backpack - again. The winter/spring became a search for mind and body wellness. By mid-spring, I had tuned into a treatment regimen that kept the RA in check. I could walk well again. But anxiety contin...
Autumn Light | S2:E5 - Skyward
มุมมอง 1608 หลายเดือนก่อน
In Western Montana, the Mission Mountains are in a class of their own. Steep, glaciated, nearly trailless, they are some of wildest feeling mountains around. In this week's vlog, I spend three days in the Missions working on a scene. A mid-October high pressure system pushes me in the direction of astrophotography and alpenglow. Thanks for watching!
Autumn Light | S2:E4 - Equilibrium
มุมมอง 2709 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this week's vlog, I head into the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness on the edge of high pressure system. The promise of fresh snow and dynamic light gets me out the door. Exhausted from a quick succession of photography trips, I initially struggle to find my rhythm, but am ultimately rewarded with spectacular light. This is the kind of experience I live for. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for thinking of us by keeping us informed. Life isn't a straight line, it waves around a bit, sometimes uncontrollably, but every dip down is never permanent. Sometimes, we've just got to be patient. Best wishes to you, and we'll enjoy whatever you produce.
Thanks for the update, Brian. I always enjoy your photography and vlogs. Here ya on having to take pauses. Personally, summer is something I always look forward to being over. Very hot today in my neighborhood. Take care now. See ya later.
As for me- a forever fan. For you and your eyes- wishing you forever well!
Brian, I can truly understand. I love going out and doing flower, bird and landscapes but the weather here in the Mojave Desert is too hot ( average 114 - 118 F ) is just a no bueno. This puts me into a unhappy state. When Mother Nature decides to allow us back out, then I know we’ll see some beautiful wildflowers coming from your end. Just relax and don’t worry about anyone else but yourself. Keep it simple my friend. 😊
Brian, love your vlogs…. No need for unnecessary pressure on yourself…. I’m sure we’ll all thoroughly enjoy whatever you’re able to come up with in a way that’s reasonable for you and what you’re able to do. Hang in there… I really enjoy your style of photography - you’re one of the very best…. And an excellent teacher of your craft…
It’s impossible to schedule creativity and nature. Post when you feel it is right. I look forward to any future photography videos and posts you make. I really like the rainbow photo you recently posted. On your wall, you have one of my favorite photos of yours that I don’t have on a wall, yet.
Will always look forward to whatever you post and whenever you post it! 🌻❤
Thanks for sharing. I have a son that is struggling with similar issues. I am glad to hear you have discovered tools to help. Keep up the great work you are doing. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 👍24
This is awesome...I'm doing pre-scouting before going to Glacier in August (2024) and I came across your videos, great compositions and many thanks in providing the locations!
Great image. I love shooting moving water too. It’s like an odd combination of landscape and action. Enjoy your backpacking trips. I’m laid up with an injury at the moment so your vids may be the on,y way I get out this summer.
You're blessed with a good camera, skill, talent, a poet's eye. There are few things more beautiful than wildflowers- water is one. Happy you got your feet wet and captured the beauty of water. Thank you.
Thanks so much for sharing your struggles l, both mentally and artistic. One day at a time.
Thanks, Will. I appreciate your support. Onwards and upwards!
I really admire and appreciate your candor. Many people can absolutely relate including me. One foot in front of the other until the planets realign. ❤
Thanks so much for your kind words, Lori. Absolutely. I assume most folks have experienced some form of this or worse. It's a shred human experience, especially lately.
As a photographer who enjoys your work - and saw a lot of it on the walls today in Alpine Physical Therapy - and as a mostly retired psychologist, I really admire your candor and ability to articulate about your struggles with depression. Correspondingly, you do a great job explaining how "behavioral activation" or engagement is so helpful. I love your note about feeling the chemical changes in your brain. My heart is with you Brian. Oh - and as an aging trail runner, i love seeing those trails up the side of Sentinel, University Peaks, etc.
Thanks for your kind words, Jeff. It was wonderful to meet you and chat at the market last week.
When I retired in June of 2017, I did virtually nothing until I took your Winterscape Photography class. You renewed my passion for photography and for that, I will be eternally grateful. Thank you for being so open with your struggle, and I applaud your victory in this latest bout. Beautiful video of your hike. Is that your own music? It reminds me of whale song.
Thanks so much, Pat. I am so happy to hear about you reconnecting with photography. We are all here to help each other, I suppose. I've always appreciated our chats. Not my music in this one, just a licensed song. I hope to start recording in the next week or so!
Wildflower Diaries aren't filled solely with wildflowers. How could we appreciate the beauty of a wildflower if it's all we ever saw or heard?
Thanks so much for your support and kind words.
So proud of you for getting back out there. I always appreciate your honesty about your struggles with anxiety/depression.
Thanks for your kind words and continued support. I really appreciate it!
Wow! I just watched this on a different device. Wonderful work and I love your perspectives. Jeff Matranga
Amazing!
Very nice image, Brian. I totally failed to get a nice Aurora image. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing, Brian. Most enjoyable.
Nice. You captured an evening walk with the wildflowers perfectly.
Love love love!
Another beautiful photo!! You make me miss Missoula and Montana even more when i watch your videos and see your photographs.
The buttercup prepared a spot for you. It's good to know a place.
How beautiful! Brian you are amazing! Thank you for sharing.
Great video. Such a chill vibe.
Thanks!
Wow! What a difference that golden light makes in the final image. Congratulations, Brian, on another perfect portfolio addition.
Thanks so much!
A lone buttercup deserves that spotlight. How beautiful.
That's what I thought too!
Another beautiful, relaxing episode, eventhough it makes me homesick.😉
Thanks so much!
maybe you missed the signs to stay on the trails?
Great to see you back, Brian. Another wonderful video here. Spring flowers are a treasure. You showed these off superbly. Have a great photography season.
Thanks so much, Terry!
Lovely shot and I admire your patience in working that location. I also love your genuine appreciation for just being out there.
Thanks, Lori. It's lovely to get to hang out with all of the flowers.
Good to see you again Brian. You are like a dog with a bone and that is what is needed to get great compositions resulting in wonderful pictures. Nice work! 😊
It's a joy hanging out with the wildflowers. Thanks for watching!
Your persistence paid off once again. Beautiful soft light on the shooting stars and the golden hour light on the mountains. I also like your dream worm shot of the yellow bell. Welcome back!
Thanks, Pat! I'm glad that you are getting out there too.
Fantastic work Brian - stoked to see you out there getting it!
Thanks so much, Mark!
Oh my goodness! Welcome back Brian and wildflowers!!! You both have been missed!
Thanks so much! I am so glad to have the wildflowers back!
So pretty (as always). Shooting stars are my favorite wildflowers. I look forward to the Wildflower Diaries every spring!
Thanks, Dana!
Gorgeous pictures and landscape! Makes me jealous since I live in Louisiana. No mountains to see here lol Love your videos though. Been looking forward to another one. Can’t wait for the next! Many blessings to you!
