nothing succeeds like success 👍
This is unwatchable. You must be ashamed of yourself, so don't go on YT. Homo Sapiens, turn on your brain.
Why is your video without a header? Is there a defect?
Why go to the Letort Spring Run? For the joy of the challenges you related, enjoyably I might add. The mere aura of this venerated stream was enough to keep me at bay for years. It now is a favorite place to go, with hope enough. Winter is best as the high grasses , reeds and cattails are down so there is more hope of a back cast. I take one fly (multiples of the same pattern), an 8 30:24 ’ 4 wt and a big cigar. I’ll sit where I have a stretch to watch and wait for a rise. Usually, there are midges and frequently throughout winter and spring, blue wing olives. If I don’t see some of these I may stay an hour and head off to the Yellow Breeches to fish to the sippers taking midges. If there’s a sip, I’ll crawl or walk (back from the stream as not to be seen) and make a cast. About 60% of the time I’ll catch a fish here (upper section) and about 98% of the time it’s a 6 or 7 inch stream bred brownie. My best day was in a foot of snow dotted with adult blue wings when I caught a large fish. I’ve had two days where I caught 6 small fish and many days, zero. What’s not to love!
This is such a great explanation of a skagit setup.
@basedpatriot4982 Hope it helps. Different manufacturers calling different parts of a skagit system by 30 different terms really doesn't help to clarify much 😂
Actually no… in order to service a shutter it needs to be completely disassembled, each part fully cleaned then reassembled and adjusted - called a CLA. ANYTHING ELSE is a complete fudge and will not last. You are just showing hacks and shortcuts that do not work. That’s the reality.
Why do their reels click in both directions?
@stevenm6301 I have no idea 😂. Just a design choice I imagine. Since the clicker is just for sound, it doesn't actually have anything to do with the drag mechanism, I'd guess you could even disable it if you wanted to.
@ Yeah I just bought one and it surprised me is all. Guess I could learn to like it. Just curious if it had an actual purpose.
Went there many years ago, looks even better now
Everything you said is spot on! I haven’t fished the Letort in many years, but I remember how difficult and technical it was. Extremely educated and wary fish, and the grassy bottoms, banks, etc,,etc,, make it so hard. But like you said, I have seem huge brown trout in that stream, never caught any, but I’ve seen a few wink at me and disappear into the watery bottom.
Hi Can you tell me the shop that I can buy one that ships to England GB please
Great expectation! I used one hand rod till now. For this winter conditions i bought switch rod Loop opti switch 6 wt 11 ft. I found one line from rio that has 3 mow tips head and running line. They have it in 400 and 425 grains. Do you maybe know the difference, is it easier to trow with 400 gr ? Tnx
@markovojinovic8018 It really depends on the rod. Unfortunately it's not an exact science. Experimenting with different lines is the best way to figure out what works best with your rod. It can get expensive 😂. You won't feel a LOT of difference between a 400 and 425 grain line. A 425 grain line will cast heavier flies better, but it won't be a huge difference. The best way to figure out what works best with your rod is to just try a few lines. I tell people to try not to spend too much money on their first line or two so they can figure out what works best with their rod.
@@ontheflywithryan5611 tnx
I can see how this method might remove the oil from the visible parts of the front side of the aperture and shutter blades . But what about the back? Sticky blades are usually caused by helical lubricant breaking down and separating into dried gunk and thin oil,. The thin oil then migrates to places it where it shouldn't be. Obviously the oil is not choosy and is going to affect the back of the blades just as much, if not more so, than the small visible area at the front. How will this hack clean the oil from the back of the blades? Or from the hinged edges, which are not visible? I'll give you a clue: it won't. So the problem will simply recur later. To do the job properly, the whole lens and shutter assembly needs to be removed from the body. The blades need to be taken apart and cleaned individually, then reassembled. It is a good idea to replace the old helical lubricant at the same time - you know, the stuff that caused the problem in the first place - with a synthetic product of the right grade.
How does this not pop off?
@paullance1258 there's a very strong detent holding it. You'd have to have an enormous amount of force pulling sideways for it to come off, and since force is only really applied along the direction of line travel it shouldn't affect it.
@@ontheflywithryan5611 I’ve always had a screw or release. This is a new way Of reel to me
maxcatch has some great priced fly lines. I heard that their "gold" fly line is the same as the rio gold. Made in same factory. 1/5th of the price
@3runjosh I'll have to check them out. I tired one of their Skagit heads a few years ago and it wasn't great, but hopefully the quality has improved
How long of a tippet?
@davidroberts5535 With a sink tip I only use a foot or two of tippet. Maybe 18-24 inches.
Do you cast spey at this location? I was just telling the guys at Precision that a guy uses a switch/spey rod at the bridge.

Thank you so much for this video. Genuinely believed id have to throw my centrepin away after the ' paul' fell out on a fishing trip with my dad yesterday. Is there a place where i can replacement ' pauls"
@jamesy954 I'd try calling the reel maker. Aside from that I really don't know, unfortunately. I'm having the same problem, because my reel isn't made anymore.
I tried it last night for the first time, in a lake. I was impressed with its looks and action. The fish were not. Lol 😂
You'll have this 😂. If I could figure out how to always impress the fish I'd be fishing the Bassmaster circuit 😂.
I think they cut wonderful and the price is awesome. However, for the way I like to fish for trout with small flies, light tippet and Davey knots they don't work for me. I put a spacer under the cutter blade but I still couldn't get it to cut the knot off of the hook eye.
Dropper too long, gets tangled every cast
@@bradleyhattendorf7136 You can always try a stiffer material for your dropper. It will never be something that casts well.
Hello sir, I accidentally touched the diagonal panel in the middle part of the viewfinder, now I can't see the light meter on the viewfinder clearly anymore, what can I do?

$120? Somewhere around there. It was two years ago, I couldn't tell you for certain.
@@ontheflywithryan5611 is the new one you got a -5+, thinking about getting the same reel as my first fly reel
What rod wt did you put that on. I have a 6wt and trying to figure out if I need a +5 or +7
@gregjr63 on the 7+ I have an 8 weight line. I THINK the reel size is based on -7+, so 6, 7, and 8 weight. And the -5+ is for 4, 5, and 6 weights.
@@ontheflywithryan5611 so it probably doesn't matter if I get the 5+ or 7+ for my 6wt. Thanks for the help. I saw it at sierra the other day and you're one of the very few with that color.

Just ordered this nipper. What zinger do you have it attached to? Looks nice.
That is a cheap zinger I think I got from Postfly Box, which I would never subscribe to again 😂 but that's a different story. If you search zingers on Amazon it's the generic one that everyone is selling. The price is right though 🤣. No one will ever convince me that Fishpond zinger is worth $30
@@ontheflywithryan5611 dude fishpond zinger is the shit. You'll never look back
Level the barrel and you’ll have full rotary function 😊
Hey man what size are you using to target these ? And do you recommend sizing up if looking for bigger fish ? Thanks from a noob
I totally missed this, I'm sorry. I fish them anywhere from size 6 or 8 all the way up to 1/0. If I'm fishing for smallmouth (depending on the time of year) I'll usually start with something like a big bulky deceiver, then work down to a Clouser or smaller. Typically try for the bigger bait bigger fish thing but sometimes big fish will eat a little Clouser and small fish will try to eat a 9 inch musky streamer 🤷. The nice thing about a Clouser is it will usually give you a shot at most sizes of fish. Typically it's a smaller fly but I think it's just enticing. You can also tie them lots of different ways, big and bushy, really small and sparse for when the water is low and clear, with bead chain eyes for shallow water, heavy lead for deep water, etc. A few colors of bucktail and some hooks and eyes are really all you need. A little flash doesn't hurt but definitely isn't necessary. It's a great fly to experiment with and really dial it in for the water you're fishing.
I do have a question, I will attempt to clean and fix my grandpa's canonet. He always said that it fell once, and the view finder mirrors got misaligned, I have looked at it, but everything seems normal. Is it common to have that issue after a drop? Btw he does know what the focus is, but he says that sometimes he can't focus the viewfinder completely.
There are a lot of possibilities. Especially with older cameras sometimes the double image gets very hard to see. Dropping can definitely cause issues.
But once you get it you realize how much fun this can be . I carry a spare reel rigged with a Skagit set up and when ever I see some good swinging water I just swap reels and I’m ready to go . Thanks for sharing
Thank you for the video. This is the most comprehensive explanation of the different fly lines.highly recommended.
Glad it helped! I just back from fishing an intermediate line this afternoon.
How was the durability of the paint job?
Total crap 🤣. Knocked a bunch of it off the second time I fished it. I definitely recommend finishing any paint job like this with multiple coats of a clear hard finish.
you the man! thank you for the post. I'm excited to throw my liquid spool onto my remix reel. They say it is interchangeable!
They definitely are!
I really like it too!
Especially when other companies are charging $50-100 for aluminum nippers. The Simms Pro nippers have replaceable blades but you have to send them back to Simms. 🤦 For $100 I expect blades I can replace myself. Pretty nice when a company actually charges a reasonable price for a product.
@@ontheflywithryan5611the tough part is the Simms have a fly threading feature that the other high end cutters don’t.
Can you just use your standard floating line for the running line and then take the head and sink tip off and set up normally with tippet off of the floating line if you see a hatch and want to dry fly fish? And then put the head and tip back on for streamers?
The issue with this is that your standard weight forward floating fly line has tapered mass at its head, meaning the first 20-50 feet (give or take) is thicker in diameter then the rest of the line, which also makes this section heavier. This is what makes a fly line easy to cast. If you attached a Skagit head to the front of your WFF fly line you'd essentially have two heads at the beginning of your line. It would not cast very well at all. Technically you could reverse your weight forward fly line and use it backwards as running line for a Skagit head because the rear of a wff fly line is just thin level running line, no head or taper. To get the result you're looking for I typically carry a small tapered floating tip and swap that out with the sink tip. Then I can fish dries or nymphs under and indicator. This works well but presentation becomes an issue, especially with heavier lines because a Skagit head carries more mass in a shorter length then a standard floating line. That means it lands harder. While I've used floating tips with great results with larger terrestrials and bigger foam dries it definitely leaves something to be desired if you're wanting to fish smaller dries that require a delicate presentation. Midges, Tricos, bwos, these sort of bugs are usually a bit too small and delicate for even a lightweight Skagit system. Great question though. I may very well try to do a video on floating tips, although there isn't much surface action here in February 🥶. Might have to wait until spring.
Do you have to have a high priced vice? IM 70 years old been at this for a hell of a long time. I have used the same vice for ever. The price of most all vices including the so called Budget vice is to much Get the vice you can without all the bells and whistles that's put on them. The vise needs only to hold the hook. I have a Thompson came in a red box. Not much to it. Not much could go wrong. One of the best buys that I have made in my 70 Years. Save all the money you can for materials. Im lucky I hunt and fish. Most of my my feathers and hairs come from the field. a lot of the tools I have made myself.🥸
You certainly don't need an expensive vise but the number of cheap vises out there today that can't hold a 3/0 down to a 20ish size hook is surprisingly high. You also don't need a high priced car but plenty of Ferraris get sold every year. 🤷 Same goes with fly rods. You can catch fish on a $10 5 pound fiberglass rod, but most people would rather not.
I really wonder how long did you cast with this 175gr head? I will be very satisfied with 75feet.
That's about right. It depends on the fly and the type of cast, but 75 feet is definitely doable
Thank you so very much! 😊 I have no experience doing such a repair but with your advice everything works so well! My viewfinder is now cristal clear! 🥳 Best regards from Germany. Matthias
You made me laugh at your description of the Letort - all accurate! I spent about 30 days on the Letort this year and just when I thought I had it figured out, I went 3 weeks with nada. Conditions need to be perfect, presentation needs to be perfect and if you don’t sink into the mud in the bank, you may have a chance for a take. Or not.
You definitely need to be prepared for some punishment 😂. Catching fish there is definitely never a guarantee. Still, if a challenge is what you want it's a great place to get it. I think the difficulty is what makes success so rewarding.

Tweezers, oh once you start to get used to using them, you use them more and it’s so nice!
Had mine for over 17 yrs. Normally I do not comment on products. Unfortunately not long after purchasing the vise the jaw started sticking close. Had to beat on it to open. Replaced the jaws and still it sticks. Would not waste the money for something that costs over $500.
are you using 5 foot opst sink tips? if not, what tips are you using? how much leader are you using after that?
I use the OPST 5 foot micro sink tips as well as their floating micro tips. I also use the SA Sonar in a 7 foot length as well as occasionally light Rio MOW and IMOW ten footers. Those Rio tips usually end up on a single hand six weight or a trout spey rod if I need a little extra length in the system. It took me a while to dial it in. My only advice is to experiment. That's the best way to figure out what will work best for your rod and head and casting style. The OPST micro tips are a good place to start though, especially if you're fishing a light single hand rod and a short skagit head.
@@ontheflywithryan5611 yeah I am about a year into experimentation, and I feel like I am transitioning from super basic beginner to improving my casts. I really struggled to cast with those 5 foot OPST tips early on, so I fished with 5/6-foot floating and light sinking versi/poly leaders. Things are starting to come together, so I am revisiting the OPST sink tips.
How do you have two jaws? I bought two of these Aliexpress vises . First was about 8 years ago. And lost it while moving. The second i have put heavy grease in side ,so it doesnt wiggle less when rotating. Been using it for about 4 years now.
