    Wow I'm really late to this Epi 61 SG review, thanks! Used cherry like yours just showed up at a local store, and I've been wanting an SG with Gibson Burstbuckers (I'd prefer 1,2 but I'll take 2,3). The 61 Gibson SG Standard now have BB1,2 but they're 3x the price of this used one, so this seems like a no brainer.

      Not gonna disagree. There are quite a lot of imports that are as good or even better. Well, that is right up until you take that big depreciation hit when you decide to sell it to get that next guitar. Not saying that it should be that way, but the fact is that USA made guitars hold value far more than their import counterparts. If I bought the Gibson version of this guitar at the same time I got this Epi, I could now sell that Gibson for very close to what I paid. For the Epi, I'm gonna take a 2 or 3 hundred dollar hit, minimum. I have nothing against imports. The vast majority of my guitars are imports. That said, there is a difference between having the real thing as opposed to the knockoff. You may like the knockoff as much or even more than the real (authentic 🤣) guitar, but, down the road, when/if you decide to sell or trade to get that "next step up" guitar, the import is gonna put a big ol frownny face 😩 on your head

      I think you got the 61 SG that is normally 599. model. The truss rod cover does not say les paul. Still a good guitar but the one in this video currently cost 949.00 and it comes with a hard shell case and Burst bucker pick ups. That is the only difference. Your model has pro buckers in it which are similar to Gibson 57 classics which are great for 80's and 90's rock and as far as I'm concerned for most of what you will want to play in the rock category. This guitar in this video has pretty much that one difference. The pick ups and case included in the price. You get what you pay for. The guitar you have is a great guitar and I'm buying one next week. Found a used one with maestro tremolo and case included that was bought separate for 125 bux for 400. Hardly used. The young man bought it to learn to play and it's a bit to much for a learner with the tremolo. So he paid 649 which is cost with tremolo and the case at 125. I scored.

    I Got the same guitar today. It's beautiful. but it wont stay in tune after playing two chords. I don't know what to do. I think the strings are getting stuck in the nut because when I tune no movement in pitch changes till a full turn. I have no idea how to fix it.

      Hmm, that's surprising to me. I now have 3 SEs and the nuts on all of them were perfect out of the box. That's not to say there can't be a bad one in the bunch. I suppose the first thing I'd try is putting a little graphite in the nut slots, or nut sauce if ya got it. Also, is it 1 or two specific strings or all of them? I'll be happy to help as best I can. If you want, shoot me an email (grumpymike335@gmail.com) and let me know if the graphite works. If not, maybe I can help with further diagnostic ideas.

Everything else is to be upgraded with the good stuff. GraphTech nut, Gotoh tuners, vintage 80s era ESP bridge with brass saddles, and a Bare Knuckle Warpig with CTS 500k coil split pot. Dudes!! I was checking out used Teles online a couple of years ago, just for kicks. Wasn't really in the market. But then I found that a local guy was selling the exact Modern Player you're holding. Your review and a couple of others convinced me to check it out. It was hardly played, and I think I paid $325 for it. True to your inspection and some of the comments here, the 5-way switch was pretty wimpy and not clicking into position, but was easily remedied when I replaced it with a Strat 5-way I had laying around. Sure, I might upgrade the tuners and the pickups at some point, but then again - maybe not! It's great the way it is, and it's really a chameleon because it can do just about everything! Jazz, blues, twang, rhythm, leads... Wouldn't you know that Fender hits a homer in terms of tone flexibility, traditional Tele-ness, good looks and price point - and then takes them off the market!

    • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup, the funny thing is, it was a mistake. It was supposed to be a Squier but it was too good to not put a Fender logo on the headstock. I 100% believe it the absolute best deal on a Fender out there.

      Howdy, the thing about guitars in this price range, no matter the manufacturer, is they are going to be "hit or miss." Over all, the quality of the Affinitys is quite good for the price. I completely agree with you on this. I was looking to buy a pedal board for the first time and like you I saw the prices for basically an oversized sheet of aluminum cost $80-$350. Like you I don't know as to why they are so much, They can say it's "development costs" but realistically there is nothing special about a slab of aluminum with hole slots for wire management. Honestly after I saw the ridiculous prices (which I would not pay more than $20) I am just going to go to my local hardware store and make my own out of nice wood or repurpose a random slab or metal I find lying around and add velcro.... It's isn't that complicated so I don't know why they try to charge you like it is.

    • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Visually, I think a nice, well crafted, pedal board is, aestetically, my favorite. It just looks classy to me. And, if you have the skills, crafting a board to your own specifications is a fantastic project to pursue. However, there are definitely some cons to consider, primarily weight. First, wood is definitely going to be heavier than aluminum or plate steel boards. Of course, this only matters if you are gigging with it. Also, wood can be a bit bulkier. The one I built back in the day weighed a ton. Secondly, pedal boards, by nature, take a beating. Believe me, it doesn't take long for that beautiful piece of woodcraft you created to look like it's been through the apocalypse. Of course, this only applies if you are taking it out to gigs. All this to say, if you need a board for your home or studio, by all means, get some lumber and build away. But, if you plan to gig, there are plenty of lower cost options to be found on Amazon that will serve you quite well. Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment. I truly appreciate the interaction.

    I think that DLX refers to deluxe, I have heard them called deluxe on the HB videos when they are listed as DLX, why they cant just spell the word is beyond me. My CST-24 Deluxe came with Wilkinson pickups but I bought mine when they first came out before they changed over to using Roswell pickups, they have a nice crisp sound to them. Before I got this guitar I had not used this type of bridge before and had read that they were hard to intonate, but mine intonated just fine and it was only a very slight adjustment. I have quite a few Harley Benton guitars, some I have upgraded just for my own pleasure not because they needed it. I love them all, great value for money and well built! If I don't like the pickups I fiddle with my EQ pedal before changing them and 90% of the time I find a good tone that I am happy with.

  • @davva360
    @davva360 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have to admit I am torn between an Epiphone SG Standard, the Epiphone 1961 SG (the one with Gibson pickups) and a full blown SG. I just played around with a Gibson SG Standard in the local Guitar Center and I have to admit that one felt special. I compared it to a couple of Epiphone 61 Standards (not the Gibson pickups) and to be honest the main differences were the body carving and the setup. The Gibson was set up very well, the Epis were both high but I could fix that. The Gibson was $1599 though and the Epis were $584. The reason I am tempted to go with the Epi with the Gibson pickups is I have the Epiphone 59 LP and it is a great guitar which also has the same Gibson pickups. The only real benefit I see to the Gibson over that higher end Epi is the resale value should you ever want or need to sell. The Gibson will definitely hold value better.

    • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, the Gibson will retain more of its value. That is just a fact. However, I have to say that I've noticed lately that MIM Fenders, higher end Epiphones, and even Squiers are holding better on the used market that they ever used to. That's not to say that they will ever do as well, or even better than their U.S. made counterparts. And, it's no secret that the quality of the imports have come way up in the last 4 or 5 years. Ultimately, you must decide if resale value and having that Gibson logo on the headstock is important enough to you to justify the higher price. That said, in my humble opinion, you can't go wrong with the Inspired By Gibson Custom 61 LP SG. It is absolutely a fantastic guitar. Even if I someday bought the Gibson model, I'd still probably keep my Epi. I love it that much. Thanks for watching the video and commenting. I really appreciate it.

    I have the same guitar, except mine was the SC-450Plus VB. Anyway I had the same problem with the tuners, ended up replacing them with a set of Wilkenson Deluxe, Kluson like tuners. The big problem for me was the stop bar tail piece. First time changing strings the studs came out, they had been shimmed with a couple slivers of wood. I put it all back together and ended up with a severe lean forward on the studs. So I looked around youTube found Phillip McNight's channel. In a video he said to wrap the studs in glue soaked newspaper and pound them into the guitar. It worked. Guitar has been fine for the last 3 years.

    I would seriously like to know how you got the tone for your overdrive sound.I am guilty of being a tone chaser and I am just lost

    • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      IMHO, what works for me I to set a tube amp right at or just a hair past the edge of breakup. This way, you can roll back the volume on the guitar and get a nice clean tone and by bringing the volume up, you introduce just a bit of dirt which will a touch more thickness and character to your tone. For overdrive, I am partial to Klon style pedals. I usually have 3 dirt pedals on my board at any given time and one of the is always a Klon clone because I can't afford a real one 😂. The key is to not go nuts with the gain knobs on the pedal. Start with it almost all the way down, the dial it up slowly till you find the sweet spot. As for EQ, one the amp, I start with everything at noon and the add or subtract as needed. I would also recommend not spending more than a half hour at a time trying to dial in a tone. Your ears get tired and it will become more difficult to distinguish differences. More often than not, the only thing you will achieve is a severe case of frustration. Hope this helps. Keep on chasing. That tone is in there somewhere.

That said, I am currently of the belief that G&L offers better bang for the buck. As for this Squier, it was a really nice guitar that I kind of wish I hadn't sold. I sort of miss it.

    I love Fender Mustangs. The Fender Dynamic Vibrato (yes they got it right on the Mustang), the phase switching. Great guitars

    It looks fun. I bought a Steinberger Spirit Pro for travel. It works. Once you get used to getting the bridge balanced, it's OK.

    I bought this bad boy 2 months ago. I paid $549. Now it's 900.00. I like it better than all my guitars. I doubled my money in 2 months.

    Great video, and I smiled when you talked about MF's Stupid Deal, as it's how I got mine (as well as a second one for my son). I then smiled even more when you pulled out your Positive Grid 5w mini amp, as I have one of those too and I love the sound of the BS Carry on through it. Short 2 minute demo here if anyone wants to hear it in a high OD sound: th-cam.com/video/CxA7lgmJ2hQ/w-d-xo.html
