I found myself laughing when you mentioned " the airport is in the outer side of the city", Dubai is perhaps one of the very few cities where the airport is bang in center of the city. Yes, they are planning to move it by 2030. But since you moved to the city last year I've got to tell you - Bur Dubai and Deira is very much the center of Dubai.

As a country yes its young, but you can visit deira and al rass side to the modern history of dubai (late 19th century), or you could visit some great archeological sites in sharjha and um al quwein. In terms of parks there are some great parks with diffrent theams al safa park (open green space), mishrif park (natural forest), zabeel park (modern with multiple of attractions), mamzar park ( beach and private cabanas), quranic park (theamed park)
