    I, like you, had a doctor who didn’t believe in hysterectomies. I finally had one last month at 68 years old and let me tell you waiting was a huge mistake because by the time I had mine my fibroids were enormous- the largest was 13cm and had absorbed the other two fibroids and damaged my urethra, colon and bladder. I waited 20 years too long 🤦‍♀️

  • @SylvaPálová

    Women who’ve had hysterectomies may enter menopause almost 4 years earlier. The blood supply to the ovaries may be compromised during surgery by ligation, spasm, or thrombosis. Early menopause is known to be associated with increased cardiovascular risk such as heart attacks and strokes, as well as osteoporosis. Premature menopause can also increase the risk of dementia.Hysterectomy weakens the supports for the upper and mid-vagina, and can cause stress urinary incontinence. Removal or cutting of the ligaments supporting the cervix and vagina may predispose women to the development of vaginal vault prolapse. Furthermore, the effectiveness of prolapse repair can be compromised by the removal of the cervix and ligaments, which are used to anchor an effective repair.Studies regarding the effect of hysterectomy on a woman’s sex life can be confusing. Essentially, it depends on whether her symptoms that led her to consider hysterectomy were affecting her sex life in the first place. Women whose sex life was ruined by menstrual symptoms might find hysterectomy “liberating”, improving the sex life that they didn’t previously have. On the other hand, women whose sex life was not affected by their menstrual symptoms need to be aware that studies have demonstrated decreased libido and altered orgasm sensation, especially after total hysterectomy. Nerve damage during surgery may be a cause.For some women, uterine contraction is essential for orgasm. This could be lost after hysterectomy, leading to failure to orgasm or changes in the nature of them. Surgery may also change the anatomy of the top of the vagina, resulting in an altered sensation for women and their partners. Constipation following hysterectomy has been reported, and this may be a result of nerve injury.A recent Mayo Clinic study has shown that hysterectomy, even without removal of the ovaries, is associated with a 33% increased risk of coronary heart disease. The risk is increased by 250% if the hysterectomy is performed on women younger than 35 years of age.

      @@SylvaPálová Thank you for your concern. I didn’t have to worry about the blood supply to my ovaries because my ovaries were removed. I have not had any urinary issues. I have not experienced any symptoms or issues with prolapse of any organs. Even women who have had no reproductive surgeries can experience prolapse and urinary issues, especially with age. My sex life is 1000x better. I don’t have anymore heavy bleeding. I don’t experience anymore issues with the hemorrhagic ovarian cysts anymore. No more pain. My orgasms are amazing now, even better than before. I have had no nerve damage or issues. ALL the sensation is still there. If my anatomy has changed, it has definitely been for the better. I have experienced zero issues with constipation. I am very regular and healthy in that department. As far as dementia, heart issues, and osteoporosis are concerned… Women are more likely to have those problems from drinking alcohol, smoking, or excessive sugar intake. I live a very healthy, active lifestyle. And I take just enough hormone replacement to help with bone health, without compromising my heart health or risk of blood clots. What I will say is that before my total hysterectomy, my overall health and well-being was far worse off than it is now or will be in the future, based on the issues I was experiencing and the long term effects of those issues. My mental health was struggling from the toll my hemorrhagic ovarian cysts were taking on me. I also struggled with chronic anemia that expensive, high quality iron supplements couldn’t even fix. I couldn’t be active because my abdomen was swollen with blood and fluid half the time. And the simplest things could trigger a hemorrhage, such as exercise or sex. Imagine how unhealthy a person is without any exercise or with chronically low ferritin levels. Imagine how healthy a marriage is with no sex. My quality of life and health prognoses were far worse without my total hysterectomy. Furthermore, I tried everything else before resorting to surgery. I didn’t jump into it impulsively. I spent a year trying everything else I could. I tried hormones. I tried supplements. I tried radical diet changes. I worked with a homeopathic specialist. It was a year of hell that finally brought me to my final option of a total hysterectomy. And I’m so glad I did it, and only wish I had done it sooner. I am so sorry to women who have had bad experiences with hysterectomies. I would never want to lead women astray. But fortunately, I have not had a bad experience. And all I can do is share my personal experience, which has been nothing but positive all around. Having said that, it’s only been 2.5 years since my total hysterectomy. I will always be open and honest about my experience. And if I do indeed have negative experiences with my heart, hormone, brain health, sexual intimacy, or anything, I promise to be honest about those experiences so that other women can make informed decisions based on research and accurate experiences of other women in the same or similar situations.

    Hi Callie. Thank you so much for your videos. I'm 36 and because I'm BRCA1, I'll be having exactly what you did, total hysterectomy soon. I'm not afraid of the surgery but if losing my womanhood and my cycle. Like you, I'm very in sync with my cycle but I enjoy my ovulation week as it gives me strong feelings of power and having a role on this earth and in my family. I worry these feelings will go and came across your channel to see if I can find any other womens' experiences with HRT. So happy to hear you're doing well on that dose. Are you still on that dose? Did you consider the bioidentical hormone therapy at all? I can see we are very similar in our trust in nature and our bodies, our abilities to research and inform ourselves. You did mention your dr want a fan of the patches and gels. Would love to see an updated video on how you are going one yr later. Also, I take my hat off to you for being so young, with children and smashing your surgery like no tomorrow. I too have young kids but not much help and I worry about what will happen.

      There’s good news and bad news… I no longer feel that ovulatory “high”, but I also no longer feel the PMS “low”. One lady that I talked to before my surgery that had had a total hysterectomy said that she felt like a “zen Buddha” after her surgery. She said that she was just calm and no longer at the mercy of her fluctuating hormones. It was intriguing but there was no way for me to fully understand what she meant until I experienced it too. And I can now say the same thing… I am so zen haha I feel more rational, logical, and in control. So in a way, I feel even *more* of a sense of power in my life and with my womanhood. Because if I’m just being honest, before my surgery, once a month, I would become not so rational, logical, or in control. I had PMS every month, and even PMDD some months. There was depression, anxiety, irritability, etc. I don’t deal with that anymore. Being in control of myself and not at the mercy of fluctuating hormones has been life changing. Not to mention no longer planning my life around a week of bleeding every month. Talk about empowerment! So things will change, but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. My doctor has been in practice for many, many years. He is totally and competed devoted to his work and his patients. He has seen so many thousands of women for so many different reasons. In his experience, he said that although the route that they are administered works very well, the patches and gels have a tendency to distribute estrogen very unevenly. He said that his patients with the worst hormones and symptoms are the ones on the patches and gels. He said even the implant has caused issues for some women. Every women absorbs and metabolizes estrogen differently. It is supposed to administer an even level of estrogen, but often, the levels waver significantly. And with the bio-identical hormones, they simply aren’t as effective is what he said. Sure, they seem great and natural, but women on regular estradiol tend to have the best outcomes (short term and long term),and experience fewer adverse side effects. I am actually going to do another video soon where I talk about my experience with HRT. I hope this has been helpful. Thank you for your kind words! I am so sorry that you don’t have sufficient help after your surgery. I found that my kids could be much more compassionate and helpful than I ever gave them credit for. I hope you have a smooth surgery, a speedy recovery, and I look forward to hearing from you again with any questions you have or just to tell me how you’re feeling post surgery 😊

    I just had mine on the 7th. The first 3 days were extremely hard for me because the CO2 was abundant and the pressure on my chest and my right shoulder (fractured rotator cuff) was so painful and it was hard to breathe like you shared in your video. I also found out 4 days ago that I developed a blood clot in my right leg, and so I was put on blood thinners and will stay on them a total of 3 months or more. But overall, I feel like all of that is worth not having to suffer daily from the issues I had, which led to me having this surgery. I did keep both my ovaries, though, so I won't have to be on hormone replacement. I may have to eventually if I continue to get cysts. I also had a polyp in my bladder but they said it seemed benign so that was a blessing 🙌 🙏 I just want to say that your video was inspiring because I definitely don't feel alone and I love your positive energy you gave to all of us. ❤ I hope to see more of your recovery videos!!! 🥰 You're a strong mama, and you made it 🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉

      Yes, just one incision through the belly button. No scars at all. I think it’s called a “key hole” incision. I’m not trying to boast, but my doctor was the top OBGYN surgeon in that part of the country. People would travel from states all over to have him do their surgeries. I just so happened to live in that city. But he is seriously amazing and I am so grateful to have had that type of incision and such a wonderful surgery and recovery. But regardless of your type of surgery or the surgeon, I am very confident that your quality of life will improve. The only bad experiences I have ever heard of are the occasional “horror stories” on the internet. Every woman I have known or talked to personally (literally dozens) that have had a partial or total hysterectomy have been very pleased with their lives and health after the surgery. Yes, I’ve had a struggle getting back to normal, but my quality of life compared to before surgery is so much better! I’m looking forward to 6 months after surgery, to see how much better I will be and feel at that time! My Dr told me at my 1st follow up appointment, that she believes this was the right surgery for me.

      I did not have stitches that were very visible. Mine were in my belly button. But within a month, my belly button was totally back to normal. I wish I could be more helpful, I'm sorry! I know other women that had multiple incisions around their tummies took different amounts of time to heal. Unless it seems irritated or infected, it should heal just fine in its own time. I would say a healthy diet and rest are very important when it comes to the body healing.

      @@r-jproductions1343 I am so sorry about your fibroids and heavy bleeding! I had issues with hemorrhagic ovarian cyst ruptures before my total hysterectomy, so I know the toll that pain and heavy bleeding can take. My surgery was called a “keyhole” surgery. The doctor went in through my belly button and performed the operation with a robot. I don’t have any vaginal incisions, just a cuff where my cervix used to be. I quit taking HRT altogether for a while because my doctor would always say “we want you on the lowest dose possible to prevent menopause symptoms”. Well, I kept lowering the dose every few weeks or months and eventually, I wasn’t taking any estrogen and was still having no symptoms. I had been without any estrogen at all for 2-3 months when I went back to my doctor. He was shocked that I wasn’t taking any estrogen at all and wasn’t having symptoms. He said that I need to be taking some amount of estrogen, even if it’s only .5 mg because of how young I am. So I began taking .5 mg and have been taking it ever since. I have no bladder leakage and no prolapse issues. As a matter of fact, I was just at the urologist 2 months ago because of a kidney stone and he commented on how healthy my urinary system is. My bladder empties completely, no UTI’s, lab results were good, functioning optimally, everything was good. I was really scared for my surgery too. I put it off for a year and endured the pain, discomfort, and inconvenience of hemorrhagic ovarian cysts all that time because I was terrified of having a total hysterectomy. I was scared about menopause symptoms, hormones, my mood, weight gain, sex drive, etc. But I can honestly say that I have not experienced any of those things. It has been a positive experience for me. My quality of life has improved so much. I never have to worry about periods again and plan my life around them. I’m no longer at the mercy of fluctuating hormones. I’m no longer anemic. I have no regrets. You will be so happy to never have to worry about fibroids or heavy bleeding ever again. That alone will be such a blessing 💕

    Thank you for making these videos!! I go in for a Robotic Assisted Total Hysterectomy in 2 weeks. This was the recommendation due to fibroid the size of an orange and I'm 46, so there's no more child bearing in my future. I have 3 amazing boys. I've had excessive bleeding and anemia for 2 years, inverted uterus longer than that, and the past 10 months crazily excessive back and right hip pain. This is the worst because I'm incredibly active. I surf, hike, bike, jog, go to the gym...and typically would get at least 7-12 or more hours straight exercise per week. I'm currently down to only being able to walk due to pain. Getting up out of bed is difficult because my back hurts. It's hard to get in & out of the vehicle due to pain. Once I got stuck literally shrieking in pain mid-way to standing up and needed my spouse to come lift me up. This is not me at all.... I am so hoping this pain goes away. The only other concern I have is very slightly elevated prolactin levels. I've gotten mixed messages on this from different doctors. Again thank you so much for sharing and I agree...there needs to be more of these videos out there for women to know what to expect. ❤

    I just had the same surgery 4 weeks ago however mine was with multiple incisions. The gas pain wasn’t too bad for me but has been in previous surgeries. It’s not gas bubbles in your shoulder you are feeling but it’s the CO2 which can settle under the diaphragm, the muscle that helps you breathe. You might experience this as irritation in the lower chest and even all the way up to the shoulder and neck areas. The best method to reduce it is walking and gas pills.

    Hi .. my name is Jill from Minnesota, I’m 52 years young. Had a hysterectomy around 5 years ago.. but kept my ovaries… currently I’ve had an mri due to back pain, nausea… long story short .. my doctor called me to give me my complete ultrasound report… so she told me that I have a ovarian cyst as well as a concerning solid lesion… now this Wednesday I will have a second ultrasound to see if any changes in growth of lesions. I’m not wanting to have my ovaries removed because I would like to retain my ovaries.. but my regular doctor feels that it is not a good idea to keep them due to a possible future chances of having ovarian cancer… my mother had ovarian type of cancer… b My ca125 was reassuring to the gynecologist I’ve seen. But he recommended ovaries to be removed… I don’t want to take hrt.. scared of developing heart disease and poor bone density… so not sure what to do as far as to have surgery or not…. Is this a possible inpatient stay???

      @callieyoutube ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jill! I haven’t done my 1-year post op video yet (even though it’s long over-due) so I haven’t talked about this yet, but I actually don’t take HRT at all anymore. It was the best decision for me. Every bad symptom I was feeling before went away immediately when I quit the estrogen. I know it’s controversial. I know all the information out there for and against HRT. But ultimately, I had to do what felt right for me. And that was quitting HRT. I have never to this day ever experienced a single menopause symptom. No hot flashes. No headaches. No night sweats. No nothing. The only thing is that I gained 8 pounds which most of my friends and family have said I needed to do anyway and that I look better now. I say all of this to say that you don’t have to take HRT the rest of your life. You may be like me and not need it and feel better without it. I have been off of HRT for 6 months now and I have no regrets. I am finally living life to the fullest without the issues I had before my surgery and without the symptoms HRT was giving me. I am very careful about my bone health and overall health. I went home the same day as my surgery but I know women who have stayed overnight or even a few nights. I was ready and happy to go home and get started with recovery. I hope this helps and I’m here for you every step of the way, any questions you have or support you need!

    Hi Callie, I am contemplating doing what you have done. Are you put on hormone replacement therapy after the ovaries were removed? You had three c-sections? Wow you look so young! :) Thanks.

    • @callieyoutube
      @callieyoutube ปีที่แล้ว

      Why, thank you! Yes, 3 c-sections and those recoveries were so much harder than my hysterectomy. I’m pretty sure I’m a very odd case because I am on a very low dose of estrogen and haven’t experienced a single menopause symptom. So I don’t know how helpful I am with advice on hormone therapy lol At this point, I only take .25 mg every night. My doctor wanted me on the lowest possible dose to keep symptoms at bay, so I kept decreasing my dose from 2 mg to 1.5 mg to 1 mg to .5 and finally .25 mg. I even went totally without any estrogen at all for 2 weeks and had ZERO menopause symptoms. I have no idea why my body doesn’t seem to be having surgical menopause symptoms, even without HRT. But when I told my doctor I wasn’t taking any at all, he was worried and wanted me to go back to .5 mg just to be careful about osteoporosis, but I settled with .25 mg 😇 I feel great so I’m not too worried about the low dose. I was so scared about hormone replacement therapy, but it has actually been a very easy thing, so don’t be too worried 😊

    • @wem-c9f
      @wem-c9f ปีที่แล้ว

      @@callieyoutube Thanks Callie. The main reason I want to be put on HRT for menopause is mainly to protect my heart, brain and bones because low estrogen means higher risks for heart attack, Alzhemier's Disease and osteoporosis! I do have nasty menopause symptoms such as brain fog and joint aches, fatigue, anxiety and hot flushes.. the brain fog is most horrible. Maybe you are still young and don't feel the symptoms, I am not sure. 0.25mg is indeed very low. It is understood that to protect against the diseases of estrogen deficiency, at least 1.0mg is required. Also patches are the best. Research more. Thank me later xo

    • @callieyoutube
      @callieyoutube ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think it’s fair to assume I haven’t researched. I have researched a lot. My understanding is that although hormone replacement reduces the risk of bone fractures, it also has problems. Especially if used long term, it increases the risk of heart disease and breast cancer. My own doctor even told me this, which is why he suggested the smallest dose possible for treatment. I’m glad you feel good about your treatment plan, too. That’s really all that matters, is that each individual feels good about the treatment they’re choosing and receiving.

    • @wem-c9f
      @wem-c9f ปีที่แล้ว

      @@callieyoutube Oh sorry I did not mean you did not research. I did say research more. Thing is we live in a very confusing world because even medical professionals and all these health gurus all have conflicting opinions about things. I have never heard that hormone replacement increases the risk of heart disease. Where did you hear it from? I would be interested to read or watch that. I understand that our heart has estrogen receptors and that is why estrogen actually protects against heart attacks. And there is a certain dose that will protect the heart. Most doctors prescribe the mininmal just because they are either ignorant or don't care. It does not mean a little is better than nothing. There is such a thing as the right dosage doing the right thing with medications. I have got any treatment plan going yet. I am still researching. But I have lined up appointments to check my bones, heart and all the reproductive bits since I just found out I am post menopausal. :) Have you heard of Menopause Taylor here on TH-cam? • @callieyoutube
      @callieyoutube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t *need* to. All the doctors I’ve seen seem to feel the same way… Taking estrogen shows to help with preventing osteoporosis, but the more estrogen you take, the more likely things like blood clots, stroke, and cancer become. There’s actually a fine balance to strike, and that balance is different for everyone. My doctors all recommended as low of a dose as possible to treat symptoms. I eat a very healthy diet and I seem to do fine taking only .25 mg of oral estradiol at night. I have never felt a single symptom of surgical menopause. No hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, nothing. I actually feel worse when I take more estrogen. I feel more moody and just “blah”. I would say do your research, talk to your doctor, and find a plan that works for you, but in my experience and research, hormones are not *always* necessary. I hope this helped and I wish you the very best on your journey to better health! 😀
