Wild Camping on the Skye Trail Part 2/2
The two Andrews hike through Glen Sligachan and spend the night in a quiet bothy, then hike round the coast to Elgol and Torrin.

Wild Camping on the Skye Trail Part 1/2
มุมมอง 1702 หลายเดือนก่อน
In late April, us two Andrews made our way to Rubha Hunish at the northern tip of the Isle of Skye to begin an 80-mile hike along the rugged and undeveloped Skye Trail. This is part one of two and sees us hiking the clifftops of the northern coast before traversing the Quiraing and Trotternish ridge and then ending over a lunchtime Guinness in scenic Portree.

After completing the Laugavegur, I set off from Langidalur with a new hiking buddy Dawn. The weather forecast was decidedly dicey and we encountered gale force winds on the exposed ridges up on the pass. Setting off from the hut the next morning, the trail was completely different, treating us to easy hiking from one breathtaking waterfall to the next.
Hiking Iceland's 55km Laugavegur
มุมมอง 2529 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Laugavegur is probably Iceland's most popular multi-day hike, so it was no surprise to find a lot of people in Landmannalaugar. But once I got going, I had plenty of time to myself as I crossed the beautiful, bleak and varied landscapes from the Fjallabak Nature Reserve to the Thorsmork forest.

After hitching from France to Italy and hopping several trains to the Sudtirol region, Andrew and I decided to set off on a section of the AV1 with no plans or expectations. It was no surprise that the Dolomites were stunning (and the food was world-class) but I didn't think I'd enjoy this hike as much as I did. Setting off on day 7 from Le Bourg D'Oisans, we overcome the heat and some dreadful dehydrated food and reward ourselves with a proper restaurant meal. Day 8 sees us heading over Plateau D'Emparis on a stunning day. On the final day, the only things that separate us from the spa baths of Monêtier are a thunderstorm and half the animal kingdom.

This August, Andrew and I hiked the wonderful Tour of Ecrins (GR54) hike in the French Alps. I have to say, this was probably the most enjoyable week-and-a-bit of hiking I've ever done and should be on everyone's list! The rain keeps falling in the Scottish highlands and the departure of the other Andrew magnifies the challenge ahead. With rainbows in place of waymarkers, I head up and over the most challenging section yet.

      Hey Lucy, ask away! I'll try and remember what I can :D Col de Tricot - there's a small flat area on the col, right on the path, you could probably squeeze a pitch there. I remember most of the way up is quite steep, maybe a couple of places just past the suspension bridge overlooking the glacier. The refuge areas didn't seem too busy, but it was a covid year so that might be why. I'm some of the way through your Skye trip, thank you for the shout out!

    Great videos, I think you could have combined all 4 parts into just one, but I enjoyed everything. I've hiked in the Ecrins a lot, only day hikes though. But I know the GR54 is one of toughest in France, alongside the GR20 in Corsica. The specificity of the Ecrins is that everything is incredibly steep with narrow paths. They just don't have the budget to maintain it that much, not like the Great Walks in New Zealand for example. My favorite areas are in the West, near Le Désert and all around the Meije. The South is a bit too dry and rocky for my liking, but it's still spectacular. If you're looking for more spectacular mountains in France, don't miss the Mercantour (a national parc as well), the Queyras (smaller but my favorite area, very authentic with minimal human impact), or the Vallée de la Clarée (another small area, just north of Briançon. I don't like the areas around Chamonix, it's just too touristy (it looks like most of the Dolomites). Vanoise has some nice secret spots, but too much is just scarred by the presence of so many ski resorts. And there are smaller mountain ranges that foreigners almost never visit : Belledonne, Chartreuse, Bauges, Vercors, or Devoluy, that are all worth it. The variety of landscapes is insane in the french alps. And you don't have to pay anything to visit.

    • @andrewanderson68
      @andrewanderson68 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Nicolas, lots of valuable info in your comment. France is a great place for hiking and I particularly like the attitude to wild camping, I'll definitely be back again. I'm glad to hear good things about Queyras as I'd like to do the GR58 someday!

    • @nicolasbertin8552
      @nicolasbertin8552 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andrewanderson68 The Queyras doesn't disappoint. The best time of year to visit is Autumn, end of September till the end of October especially if you can catch the larches with their orange coat. It is tricky to predict when they turn orange though, and sometimes they do it so late, the first big snow has already fallen. But of course Summer is better if you wanna enjoy that refuge food.
