SUBSCRIBE IF YOU LOVE THE SMELL OF JET FUEL IN THE MORNING ;-) Joe
Hello Everyone,
A bit about me and the channel, I learned to fly long ago, but as with all things in life, fate had other ideas.
After many years away from flying, I have decided to try and get back into aviation by sharing my love of it here on TH-cam.
I love to do deep dive videos into various aircraft and stories, with the odd light hearted video thrown in
I will try to reply to as many comments as I can, even the negative ones :-) If I don't reply, it's not personal, I have to work during the day and weekends to pay the bills and big daddy government.
My interest is in all aspects of aviation and aim to publish at least one video a week and cover aircraft from the WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Modern day Civil, military, short docs and air crash investigations.
Kind regards
Joe
P.S: Every like, comment and subscription helps out the channel and motivates me to make more content

The Deadliest Top Secret Mission of the Vietnam Air War - Documentary

This story started very much as a side project about four months ago, I had not intended it to become a video for TH-cam, I was just reading various books on the Misty operations, making notes, then notes became paragraphs, before long, it became a story.
So, i figured it would be a shame to make a video about the Misty Mission, probably the deadliest missions of the Vietnam air War, flown by some of the bravest men I have ever read about.
For a select group of 157 USAF pilots, a single word would come to define courage and sacrifice in the Vietnam War: Misty. As part of an elite, volunteer unit, these pilots flew the F-100 Super Sabre on some of the deadliest forward air controller (FAC) missions in military history.
Tasked with locating and marking enemy targets deep in the jungles of Laos and North Vietnam, Misty pilots braved anti-aircraft fire, missiles, and SAMs, flying low over dense jungles to support critical airstrikes against well-hidden supply lines and fortified positions.
This was a job for adventurers, patriots, and those who thrived on the razor’s edge. But the reality of Misty missions was far grimmer than anticipated: a relentless, hazardous role, demanding extreme skill, endurance, and bravery.
Nearly a quarter of Misty FACs would be lost, wounded, or captured by the time the program ended in 1970.

Very nice video, thank you. A slight correction regarding the A-7F supersonic variant. There's a prototype on display at the Hill Air Force Base Museum, which I've seen and have pictures of somewhere. Wikipedia says there were two prototypes but I can't say anything about the second airframe.
you can stop pinging me or i can go away!
The blue Arrows are pointing to the ailerons not the elevators.
Yeah, I managed to mess that one up, i was not paying attention when i was editing the video, who knows what I was thinking. :-) Joe
@@AviationRepublic still enjoyed the vid though.👍
I think it’s easy to discount the Vietnam War as a waste of men and materiel and it was an excruciatingly high cost for both sides but it was required in order to draw a line in the sand not to be crossed. Had the Americans prosecuted the war to its fullest extent, then undoubtedly it would have spread wider and risked the very thing it was intended to prevent. It must have been appalling to be caught up in but they did their job and moderated the, until then, rampant spread of communism in the Far East. I for one salute them and the service that they gave without reservation. All wars are lamentable but some were essential for peace. This is not so true today sadly. 😢
Great video on the A-7!. I always Iiked the looks of the Corsair 2. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks, will do! I ought to have another one out next week.
Served on the USS Neverdock. Home ported in Bumfuch, Egypt. General quarters station was Rumor Control out of Mess Deck Central, ComCarTray, ComSrvBtr. Before that was in an A7 outfit out of Lemoore in 70- 75
Well, ar least she saw active service. That wasn't the case for some other extraordinary aircraft like the XB-70 Valkyrie, the BAC TSR-2, the Avro CF-105 Arrow and the Sukhoi T-4 Sotka.
True, true, true, how many aircraft that would have been legends never got their moment in the sun. TSR2, looking at you.
great video
Glad you enjoyed it More on the way :-) Joe
How about you do that 2 hour pod video!👍
Don't give me any ideas, I was thinking about it a few days ago.
@@AviationRepublic This would be a subject that has NEVER been covered in video format! You research was excellent for this video!
So effectively this was the Barnes Wallis of the bouncing bomb, in a low to the ground bomber to scare the life out of crew and enemy?.
Just a curiosity: notice the close looks of B-58's nose profile with the F-111 and F-16
F-111mmmm, that's interesting, a little bit I suppose.
@AviationRepublic Convair/General Dynamics
The EE Lightning was the only fighter to accomplish a Mach 2 Concorde interception during a NATO exercise. The Hustler would have been in the same situation. Two that never shoot in hanger.

Am I the only one who is sick and tired of the use of narrators with a Brit/UK/Etc accent? Not everyone with such an accent makes a good narrator! Too many of them sound stuffy, haughty, or just quietly arrogant, and a LOT of them have such strong accents that English subtitles are needed (ironically). A narrator should be able to speak clearly and properly. A fancy accent is not needed. Nor is a bot. Rant over.
57:38 The initialism for "Forward Looking Radar" is "FLR." "FLIR" means "Forward-Looking InfraRed."
It's not ugly, it looks cool.
For whatever reason it seems the narrator has had some issues with the British.
Nooooo, no issue at all. did it come across like that in the script?, wait until i get to the TSR2. :-) Joe
Very, very good!
Really outstanding job of detailing this weapons system.
Thank you, the systems were something else. I might make a video just on the various Pods alone.
@AviationRepublic I'd watch it!
Just FYI, Strategic Air Command bases were not pronounced es ey see (the letters) but "sack" as in McConnell air force base is a SAC (pronounced sack) base.
My most prized model as a child was the hustler. It had plastic "flames" coming out of the engines. As a young USAF officer, I served as a Titan II launch officer, 74-79.
Anyway, great video, best I've seen on the 58 - nice work! :)
An absolutely gorgeous-looking, gazelle of an aircraft but I think the pod system was probably it's Achille's heel. Overly complex and limiting. The lack of an internal bomb bay on a designed from-the-ground-up bomber is always going to raise questions.
The UK has always had ultra badass fighter aircraft, but our successive commie governments always cancelled the programmes. Anybody NOTICING anything here?
This tanker literally took more ordinance than a fucking battleship to sink.
Send those flying Machines to the Philippines❤😊
Part 2?
Working on it, it's in the folder, I need to stop getting distracted by other aircraft.... :-) Joe
Did they ever build one of those 4/12 inch aircraft cannon?
Not that I am aware of, not according to the material I have here. Although I would not be surprised if there was not some rig they cobbled together as a proof of concept. - Joe
Buccaneers in Gibraltar 1992, I was on a small sailing boat moored near the end of the runway. They would take off and roll out beside us waving well below mast height
I would have loved to have been there. The wave is very British.
Pretty good video. As a SAC-trained killer, I can assure you, that nobody EVER spelled out the acronym... we said "sack" as in what testicles are carried in. The B-58 was retired before I served. I worked on many other aircraft, but always admired the B-58 as a concept.
It's a habit I have to get over. Anyway, I'm married, Mine are in my wife's handbag :-) Joe
I dont know why but I always thought the Corsair was a bad ass fighter
why edit the thumbnail like that instead of just using the original frame of the buc flying low
When I made the video i was messing around with various thumbnail styles, I stuck this one up along with two others and this one seemed to perform well, so I left it. In all the noise on TH-cam, a small channel like mine has to make a little more noise than others.
My Dad worked for Convair 50s thru 70s
How cool is that, a bit of history there. Do you have any bits and pieces from his time there?
Another great US aircraft powered by a British engine (TF-41= Upgraded RR Spey turbofan) like the Merlin Mustangs, the P&W J-42 and 48 (RR Nene and Tay) in the Cougar/Panther series, the Armstrong Siddely Sapphire (Wright J-65) in the B-57 Canberra and the Skyhawk , and of course the incomparable RR Pegasus Harrier. Good partnerships make great aircraft.
My hunch is that the B-1A program shifted money away from the B-58 operating & upgrade budget. Was it a case of the Bomber Mafia wanting the next gen hardware that they were willing to risk the gap years without a supersonic bomber?
If you can, try to find a copy of "Bombers of the West" By Bill Gunston, it's about 50 years old, but its written around the right time, just when the B-58 was dropped, he presents a very interesting case for the B-1
Why would Americans want to shoot down UK aircraft, Skippy ? Preposterous. Phony thumbnail too.
