We’re a family of 4 that recently moved from Arizona to Alaska. We were in search of a quieter and more sustainable lifestyle for us and our kids. We sold 90% of everything we had, packed our 5th wheel and made it to North Pole, AK in July of 2021. We ended up buying a dry cabin and transforming it to our perfect home. From clearing the property to adding our well and septic, it’s been an amazing learning process.
We’ve documented as much as possible for our family and friends and plan to continue sharing our ultimate adventure up here. We look forward to raising chickens, gardening, hunting and fishing and enjoying the peacefulness Alaska has to offer.
Winter is right around the corner and we are ready for the fun as well as the obstacles we’re sure that will bring. Looking forward to learning some new things and sharing some tips along the way. This has been a dream of ours for so long, and are so blessed to be able to make it a reality! Thanks for being part of our journey!

Happy Winter Solstice! We got a ton of snow at the cabin so we spent our shortest day of the year outside clearing and cleaning just to be able to get in and out of our property. Tacos Outside at 40 Below - It didn’t go as planned

Being from Arizona and dreaming about negative temps (when you have 8 months of over 100 degrees, it sounds amazing), we decided to head out on the coldest day here in North Pole, Alaska so far. It didn't go as planned, but we enjoyed the day nonetheless and had a good laugh. We were also able to try out our winter gear and take a stroll along our river trail while the sun was up.

After spending weeks with one of our propane tanks freezing on and off, we've dealt with the main causes and found the best fixes for our situation. From the regulator to tank placement to building a structure for it to keep it warmer than our artic temperatures.
Getting Ready for the Cold Alaskan Winter

Well, we had our first -36 degree day this week. We were able to prepare a bit more by bringing extra firewood closer to our back door, changing our propane tank that runs our on demand hot water heater, checking our toyo stove fuel level and finally, making some fresh homemade bread the easy way :)
Making our Cabin Warmer

If you have, or are looking into getting a wood stove, get one of these too! After one day of having it, we were able to increase the temperature of our cabin by 10 degrees! Our Pipes Froze - Insulating the Cabin

Well, we expected it, but our p-trap on the shower froze. After wrapping it in heat tape, we put up the foam panels around the skirting of the cabin.

It was a cost effective way to keep our tools, fire wood and other items we'll leave outside protected from the elements of Alaska's winter. Eventually, we plan to build a more permanent structure.
