Being from Arizona and dreaming about negative temps (when you have 8 months of over 100 degrees, it sounds amazing), we decided to head out on the coldest day here in North Pole, Alaska so far. It didn't go as planned, but we enjoyed the day nonetheless and had a good laugh. We were also able to try out our winter gear and take a stroll along our river trail while the sun was up.

Getting Ready for the Cold Alaskan Winter

Well, we had our first -36 degree day this week. We were able to prepare a bit more by bringing extra firewood closer to our back door, changing our propane tank that runs our on demand hot water heater, checking our toyo stove fuel level and finally, making some fresh homemade bread the easy way :)

If you have, or are looking into getting a wood stove, get one of these too! After one day of having it, we were able to increase the temperature of our cabin by 10 degrees! Our Pipes Froze - Insulating the Cabin

Well, we expected it, but our p-trap on the shower froze. After wrapping it in heat tape, we put up the foam panels around the skirting of the cabin.

It was a cost effective way to keep our tools, fire wood and other items we'll leave outside protected from the elements of Alaska's winter. Eventually, we plan to build a more permanent structure.
