Food Diatomaceous earth is all natural. It is a soft siliceous sedimentary rock that can be crumbled into a fine powder. These rocks are made up of fossilized diatoms, a type of hard shell microalgae, found around creeks and rivers. 100% all natural and organic

I like using the turtle sandbox because I still have the lid, and I'm able to cover the bath each night. I used dirt, wood ash, sand, and diatomaceous. I ended up buying a sifter to separate large chunks and stir everything up. The chickens love it. Also, consider providing shade for the bathing area, or the chickens will continue to dig up the yard to find cool dirt during the warmer months.

What did you do with all the dead chickens? The WHO says that chickens that are killed because they "might" have Bird Flu, ( and even if they do have Bird Flu), are safe to eat if cooked to 165 degrees, which is the normal cooking temperature.. Do the food banks or hospitals and such, get the chickens that are culled by the 100,000s, or are they dumped into landfills, like the 100,000's liters of milk dumped because the farmers are over quota? Most of us cannot afford either milk or chicken. And what about eggs?

So sorry to hear your flock got the bird flu stay strong it is so very sad. Thank you for sharing you made very good points. Whether this virus is natural or was originally released by accident or on purpose it is very sad and appears to be very bad here in the UK. I would love to let my birds roam free range but I keep them in a covered enclosure and good coop. I have only three at the minute but just increasing hopefully incubating Orpington's and also getting quail all in enclosures or hutches re quail. It is interesting re ducks very difficult for you guys hugs. I don't agree with euthanising those in the pens not your fault it is why I hate government intervention. I do agree obviously with doing ones best but blanket culling is insane. I remember UK when we had foot and mouth despite the fact the cattle could be vaccinated they just culled all in the area even those in a range of so many miles of contaminated farm. I totally feel for you crying too :(

Seems like all the deadly pandemics come from China. I think they engage in bio warfare. Sad about the birds. Government loves killing people food source. Hopefully you can better protect the birds. Too bad the government doesn't pay like they pay the industrial war complex but farmers don't give them kickbacks. Too bad they can't vaccinate birds like humans then again human vaccines dont work either. Prayers for you .

Using wormwood is a great addition to their dust bath. I just pruned out the large base limbs of my wormwood crowding my other plants and just left them out for 'later', the leaves turned crispy and were falling off with almost zero effort. Really easy to hand strip. It retains it's smell and stores perfectly. I added dried lavender flowers and going to test out rosemary. Really appreciate the idea!

If you get back into birds I recommend Muscovy and American Bresse. For a fast covered run you can probably do a conduet hoop house frame with hardware cloth, then tarp the top so no contamination from wild bird droppings. That way it can be classified as a temporary structure for tax purposes. Of course you can always buy these metal carports and extend them to any length and just throw hardware cloth on the sides.
