The output voltage of USB Type-C mobile chargers and power banks is fixed at 5V. A small efficient boost converter circuit can convert them to a 12V power source. 12V is one of the most commonly used voltage levels to supply electronic devices.
This article introduces a circuit to cover such a requirement using the XLSEMI automotive/industrial graded boost/buck-boost/inverting XL6019 chip. The chip input voltage range is 5V to 40V and the switching frequency is fixed at 180KHz, so the input voltage can be higher (for example, 9V). The maximum switching current of the chip is 5A, at 25 degrees C. A multiturn potentiometer allows the user to set the output voltage precisely to 12.0V. The internal NMOS of the chip reduces the PCB board size, complexity, and EMI (RdsON:110mR, 25 degrees C). The chip offers excellent line/load regulation figures and an internal soft starter circuit.
The XL6019 regulator is a wide input range, current mode, DC/DC converter which is capable of generating either positive or negative output voltages. It can be configured as either a boost, flyback, SEPIC, or inverting converter. The XL6019 built-in N-channel power MOSFET and fixed frequency
oscillator, current-mode architecture results in stable operation over a wide range of supply and output voltages. The XL6019 regulator is a special design for portable electronic equipment applications.
Schematic and PCB have been designed using Altium Designer 24. The PCB board has been tested against output voltage stability, temperature stress, and output noise using Siglent SDL1020X-E DC load, VEVOR SC240M thermal imaging camera, and Siglent SDS1104X-E oscilloscope. The PCB layout of the converter was designed with several precautions such as implementing power planes, low EMI, VIAs, and low ground path impedance. The input connector is a 5A USB Type-C, which makes it suitable for nowadays portable applications.

      @@MyVanitar Not true. Look at the schematic. When output voltage is lower than input (short circuit condition) there is direct current path through inductor and diode. It should have at least a fuse on input power line to avoid major disaster.

      it depends on your input supply. also when the input drops below 5V, the chip turns off. Maybe the EN pin can also help, but for my case and purpose of this circuit, disaster never gonna happen

    Hello! I simulated the circuit you made (by using a square wave instead of the UC3843) to check the components choice. I noticed a big inrush current on startup, approximately 50A (you have very big caps) when the demand of current is high. How did you manage to reduce the inrush so it does not destroy the components? Secondly, can you upload the calculus you used for every components? On the TI datasheet components calculus are for a flyback SMPS, and whan i tried using general formulas (from Phil's labs) i had really bad results with a lot of ripples. I wouldlike to do the calculus by myself. Thank you!

    • @MyVanitar
      @MyVanitar 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      usually, a boost converter is more noisy than a buck. check my latest video. although the current is low, it shows a square wave ripple. a 470uF input capacitor does not cause such an inrush

    • @baptisteroche8113
      @baptisteroche8113 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

It will cause less stable real current when the device is heating. It's not an issue for a hobby project, but you learn here people to do things properly, right? The "maximum" power dissipation on the shunt is around 1.25W. the shunt is rated at 6W. can be increased to 8W. Resistors on the source pin of the Mosfet are rated at 12W and can be increased to 16W. maximum power dissipation on those 4 resistors 6W but they won't affect the current reading. This can be even improved if the value is decreased but the user would miss low current adjustments. Load ground and input ground are also common. current sensing is the high side method. if you mean the traces from the shunt to the chip, they are short and identical

      @@MyVanitar I'm sorry, but you are still wrong and/or do not understand what I mean. Did you found the pdf I mentioned? Read it please! Your math about shunts wattage does not eliminate the fact that traces for main current sensing shunt (R9 || R10) are placed in a way that violate well known, proper tracing. Those sensing traces literally should go under shunts and have to be connected to internal side of pads where they soldered. Not like you have right now on one side which we see, it's even on some distance from soldering pads!

    Do you ever see lower ESR than expected and would this mean the capacitor is bad? I have a 50V 22uF through-hole electrolytic capacitor that I suspected may be bad on a power supply. Using the Aideepen LCR-TC1 component tester I measure 24uF and 0.47 ohm ESR. Using an online chart I think the ESR should be like 10x that, but maybe I'm mistaken. I had pulled this one because it appeared to not have continuity to GND on the board and I heard that was one way to test for bad caps.

    • @MyVanitar
      @MyVanitar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      in one case you read very low ESR and that's when the capacitor is shorted, which happens mostly for ceramic SMD ones. But in your case when the capacitance is okay, I am suspicious about your LCR (if it's a brand or a DIY) and the measurement frequency (use either 100Hz or 120Hz if your LCR meter is one of these, for the electrolytic-type capacitor is above 10uF). take the capacitor out of the circuit and test it again, it might be a resistor or an inductor in parallel.

    • @SoundToxin
      @SoundToxin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MyVanitar The capacitor was already taken out of the circuit. I didn't make the meter myself but it is a cheap (under $30) meter from Amazon. I just recently got the LCR and this was the first thing I tried with it, so if it's not accurate, I'm not sure. I can't set the frequency myself, it's pretty much automatic, you stick the part in and hit a button and it does some things to detect what the part is and display info.

    • @MyVanitar
      @MyVanitar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      with higher frequency, the ESR value drops so I think your capacitor is fine, especially when you read 24uF. Test it with some faulty capacitors

    • @SoundToxin
      @SoundToxin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MyVanitar That makes sense, so it's probably not using the ideal frequency for this capacitor so it looks weird. Thank you. I don't have any known bad caps around to test but I am trying to find bad caps on this board so I guess I'll pull and test some more and see how they look.

    • @MyVanitar
      @MyVanitar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      usually, the frequency of such devices is fixed at 100KHz, used by many manufacturers and datasheets to show the ESR, and also for marketing to show the ESR of their components is low. those online tables are rough estimations and they do not mention the frequency. you gain experience with some repairs. mostly ripple and heat cause the capacitors to fail
